19 drown as boat capsizes in UP

BAGHPAT (UP), Sept 14:

At least 19 people drownedand a few others are missingafter an overloaded boat cap-sized in the Yamuna river in thiswestern Uttar Pradesh districttoday.

The boat was carrying 60people, District MagistrateBhawani Singh said.

Initial counts put the deathtoll at 22, but authorities laterrevised it down by three.

"The toll stands at 19. Thisfigure has been arrived at on thebasis of physical identification.

The figure of 22 was based oneyewitness account," the districtmagistrate clarified.

Fifteen people have been res-cued and 20 others swam to theshore, officials said.

Search for the missing per-sons was on near village Katha,20 kms from the district head-quarters, where the boat sank,the district magistrate said.

"The boat was ferrying pas-sengers more than its capacity.Most of the passengers of themwere women. As soon as the boatreached mid-stream, it cap-sized," Singh said.(PTI)

Karti refuses toappear before CBI NEW DELHI, Sept 14:

Karti Chidambaram todayrefused to appear before the CBIin the Aircel Maxis case saying aspecial court had discharged allthe accused and terminated pro-ceedings in the matter, a claimstrongly contradicted by the CBIwhich said that the investigationwas still on.

The agency had called Kartifor questioning today in connec-tion with the foreign investmentclearance given in 2006 in theAircel Maxis deal when his fatherP Chidambaram was the FinanceMinister.

Karti, through his lawyer, hasrefused to appear before theagency saying a special court haddischarged "all the accused" inthe matter.

"All proceedings connectedwith the said (case)... Were alsoterminated," the response said.

"The response has beenreceived by the CBI today at10.30 am through a courier serv-ice. The response has also beensent through fax and email,"Karti's lawyer Arun Natarajansaid.

The response said after thedischarge of the accused and "ter-mination" of the proceedings, theCBI will not have jurisdiction toissue a summons in connectionwith the case.

The CBI strongly contradict-ed claims of Karti saying onlyfour, including two companies, ofthe eight charge sheeted accusedwere discharged by the special

court and the agency has alreadyfiled an appeal against the orderin the Delhi High Court in Maythis year.

"FIR RC-22(A)/2011-DLIhas not been quashed by the courtand further investigation under173(8) of the CrPC is continu-ing," CBI SpokespersonAbhishek Dayal said here today.

He said two Malaysiannationals and two Malaysiancompanies who were chargesheeted by the CBI in the matterdid not appear before the specialcourt and warrants were issuedagainst the individuals.

"Court proceedings are stillpending. Request has been placedbefore the Interpol for issuance ofRed Notices against the twoMalaysian nationals," Dayal said.

The CBI sources said all theoptions are open before them inthe matter. They said that exami-nation also gives suspects achance to put forth their casebefore the agency.

The investigation into allegedirregularities in granting foreigninvestment approval to GlobalCommunication ServicesHoldings Ltd for investment inAircel is still going on, the CBIsources said.

They said the agency is alsolooking into investments made byfirms controlled by KartiChidambaram into Aircel whilethe FIPB clearance issue wasunder the consideration of theFinance Ministry.

In August 2014, the CBI hadcharge sheeted former TelecomMinister Dayanidhi Maran, hisbrother Kalanithi, Malaysianbusiness tycoon T AnandaKrishnan, Malaysian nationalRalph Marshall and four firms--Sun Direct TV Pvt Ltd, SouthAsia Entertainment Holding Ltd,Maxis Communication Berhadand ASTRO All Asia NetworkPLC.

In an order on February 2 thisyear, the special CBI court haddischarged Dayanidhi Maran, hisbrother Kalanithi, Sun Direct TVPvt Ltd and South AsiaEntertainment Holding Ltd say-ing the charges were without any"legal basis".

The court order, however, didnot have any effect on the twoaccused Malaysian nationals--Ralph Marshall and T AnandaKrishnan--in the CBI's case as thecourt has already segregated theproceedings against them fromthat of Maran brothers and others.Both had not appeared before thecourt.(PTI)
