FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

On Tuesday the 4th September, all of Kindergarten went to Calmsley Hill City Farm in Fairfield. We have been learning about living things and looking at the processes of how products get from the farm to our plate.

At the farm we were greeted by Farmer Jason and he took us on a tour where we got to see lots of animals like baby chicks and bunnies, ducks, goats, turkeys, sheep, kangaroos, koalas, wombats, cows and a camel. We got to experience how to milk a cow, watched a whip cracking show where Miss Davis, Olive (KD), Cooper (KC), Mali (KA) and Zac (KB) all had a go at this. The children loved seeing their teacher and friends having a go at the whip cracking but when done by the professionals it sure did make a loud noise.

We also watched the working dogs in action, rounding the sheep and even doing some “sheep surfing” – I think this was Kindergarten’s favourite part.

Lastly, before returning home, we watched a farmer sheer a sheep and collected the wool to use back in the classroom. It was an amazing day; Kindergarten learnt a lot and wish we could visit the farm more often.

Staff Professional Learning Each week our staff meet after school to undertake professional learning. This week, Katrina Davies, Occupational Therapist Manager of Educational Speech Pathology and Therapy Services, delivered an inspiring presentation, with a particular focus on sensory processing. Katrina enabled us to understand ways to achieve and maintain higher levels of attention for our students and ways to help our students regulate their behaviour. To achieve an optimal level of performance, our children will benefit from brief lesson breaks where targeted activities like slow rhythmical jumping, stretching and seated chair push ups assist students to regulate themselves to allow them to engage in their learning.

Drummoyne PS Parent Feedback Survey As mentioned in last weeks’ newsletter, the Drummoyne Public School Parent Survey (utilising the Tell Them From Me “Partners in Learning” survey) asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. The parent survey will run until 24 October.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. Additional document for Parents and Carers: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/TTFM_Parent_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T32017.pdf To access the survey please go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/86457

PENINSULA ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM

The Peninsula Engagement Program (PEP) is an enrichment, extension and transition program held at Sydney Secondary College, Balmain campus. Year 4 and 5 students are identified and offered a place in the 2

day program. Teachers from each primary school in the Balmain Peninsula area co-teach with a specialist teacher from BSSC while senior students from the college campus mentor the primary students.

Our Year 4 and 5 students chose an elective of interest and over the two days worked collaboratively with peers from other local schools to solve, create adapt and further develop their higher order thinking skills.

This week some 34 DPS students embraced the opportunity to learn from others under the guidance of specialist teachers. Electives for this program included robotics and technology, English, industrial design, mathematics, science and maths.

Students who participated in the Peninsula Engagement Program included: Oliver Patrick, Samuel Johnstone, Lexi Modena, Will Smith, Stephanie Maguire, Wendy Boland, Mia Shalash, Xander Lapins, Finn Moore, Celina Zehira, Sophia Wong, Stuart Newton, Rosanna Bambang, Evelyn Kerr, Christian Ng, Ava Pavlou, Charli Husken, Charlie Bernia, Gemma Chadwick, Ava Watson, Kelly Elsey, Dylan Smith, Marirose Giann, Madeleine Vaughan, Isobel McLachlan, Lucy Knox, Cole Melvin, Jason Kollias, David Sukkar, Jordan Jacob, Isla Matheson, Ava Boncini-Burns, Zoe Hayden and Tahlie Keenan.

Student Recount P.E.P or the Peninsula Engagement Program was held at Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus on the 12th and 13th of September and it was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the subject I chose because of the hands-on experience. In my topic, which was Industrial Design, we learned how to saw, solder, polish and use a guillotine. In the end, we each ended up with a pendant that showed off our or someone else's identity. The process of making our pendants was simple:-

1. Make your design on two pieces of taped up copper. 2. Saw out your design or let the teacher help you by using the guillotine to cut out your design. 3. File and sand your copper pieces. 4. Take off the tape and sand faces of the copper. 5. Use hammer and a hole punch to make a dent. 6. Drill a hole in that dent. 7. Solder your two pieces of copper together with help of an adult. 8. Cool in an acid bath. 9. Sand down, use steel wool on the back of your pendant and use Brasso to make a nice sheen. 10. Wash with warm, soapy water. 11. Put cord through your hole and voila, you have your very own pendant! Madeleine Vaughan 5D

JELLYBEANS MUSIC PROGRAM

As you know, this term in their weekly Jellybeans music classes students have participated in a new Australian popular music program with songs like ‘Eagle rock’, ‘Love is in the air’ and ‘I am Australian’.

On Thursday afternoon, 27th September, all infants and

primary classes will perform their music for students and parents.

YEAR 6 LEADERS

Every day for Term 2 & 3, Zac and Alasdair have taken on the job of raising and taking down the flag. We chose this leadership role because we thought it would be a fun experience and it would help the school. Every morning at 9:10am we head to the office to collect and then raise the flag. At 3:10pm, just before home time, we head out of class to take the flag down. On Friday if we’re lucky we get a lolly snake. We are so happy that we were given this job and will continue on until the end of the year.

HIGHLIGHT ON STUDENT WORK

This week in 1M’s science we had a fine motor skills challenge with Mr Anthony. Izzy and Elise tested their building design against the forces of gravity and earthquakes.

PREMIER’S SPELLING BEE FINALS

Congratulations to our four Spelling Bee finalists, Eleanor Lemech (4P), Rosanna Bambang (4Z), Abigail Ong (6C) and Chiara Galletta (5H), who attended the Premier’s Spelling Bee zone finals at Glebe Public School this week. Well done girls – we are very proud of your efforts.

LIBRARY NEWS

Many thanks to all those students and parents who have made an extra effort this week to remember when their class library time is and brought back books! I often talk to students about the nature of ‘circulation’ and how a blockage disrupts the smooth running of the library, some of them listen! Even though classes are booked into the library for a weekly visit, loans are issued for a 2 week period to allow borrowers to finish a chapter book or re-read a book that they have enjoyed. Whilst it is possible for a student to login to Oliver via their Department of Education portal and renew a loan, very few actually do this. A good rule of thumb is that if you cannot finish a book in two weeks you may need to return it and revisit it later in you reading journey, also, if you are moving or renovating, please just keep library books in your school bag. It is also possible to reserve a book via Oliver at home but I am very happy to assist students with this task. When considering reserving a book, students might like to also consider that returning the books they have finished with helps to keep the circulation going as other students are often waiting many weeks for popular books.

Scholastic Book Club Issue #6 orders closed on Wednesday; we anticipate delivery by the end of Week 9. Issue #7 brochures will probably arrive at the very beginning of Term 4 and Issue #8 brochures around Week 4/5. These are the issues with lots of Christmas and holiday goodies so if you would like to keep your purchases secret from your offspring, please make it very clear on your order form! We will keep special secret stuff in the library office for you until you can collect it. You can make direct contact with our organiser via this email address: [email protected]

Student Librarians for 2019 Some very keen Year 5 students have already approached me about being librarians next year. Now that we have finished swapping the fiction and non-fiction collections, it will be much easier for current and future student librarians to assist with re-shelving, loans and returns. I anticipate that when applications for next year’s student leaders are invited, I will put up the traditional ‘wanted ad’ near the internal library door. The requirements remain centred around the Dewey decimal system and the English alphabet with an emphasis on both the ability to read and a love of reading.

Happy reading!

Every now and again a meme pops up on social media from a mum who delights in sharing the joys of her trip to the shops alone. No kids. Just her and her handbag. The caption always reads something along the lines of ‘You know you’re a mum when going to Target alone feels like a holiday’. I always chuckle when I see those, because I can relate. A lot of us can. And not just the mums.

Parenting is incredibly fulfilling and the most important ‘job’ any of us will ever do, but it can also be demanding, frustrating and exhausting.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve arrived home only to be bombarded with requests, questions, stories of what I missed – or all three – before I’ve even taken my key out of the door. I’m not joking. I tried to implement some sort of buffer for myself so I didn’t feel so stretched within the first minute of getting home but it never worked. They’d always be so happy to see me and it didn’t seem fair to not be immediately available, despite the fact that it was quite overwhelming. It’s not as though I was ever gone that long either. I wasn’t even working. I’d only ever been to the supermarket, or Target, lol.

I always found the contrast of time alone and all of the quiet that comes with that, and the – is chaos too harsh? – of walking in the door really difficult to manage, especially because the kids always had stuff absolutely everywhere by the time I got back. I knew they’d always had heaps of fun because the family room always resembled a toy shop. There was never any “Let’s put things away as we’re finished with them” on Dad’s watch!

Whether our kids are little and jump on us the minute they see us or they’re that bit older and don’t necessarily even come to the door when we get home, it’s worth taking time to think about how we want to show up when we see them. It never occurred to me all those years ago that I could better prepare myself for the homecoming. Not once. Sometimes we were just taking each day moment by moment. What I know now is that if we use the time between leaving one place and arriving at another, it can make an astounding difference to how we feel, and to what we bring to our family at the same time.

The Third Space

Dr Adam Fraser calls it the ‘Third Space’. It’s the space between two places or spaces such as between work and home, between being home alone and the kids arriving home after school, or even between going to the supermarket and home. Tuning into the Third Space is also a brilliant practice to incorporate into a work day, say between your desk and a meeting, or a meeting and an interview.

In the Third Space, we can do three things to ensure we show up the way we want to, every time: reflect, rest and

WELLBEING AND MENTAL HEALTH

Page 13: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 2018 TERM 3, WEEK 8 Respect ...€¦ · Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL . Drummoyne Public School Email: drummoyne-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au Rawson Ave, Drummoyne 2047 Phone:

reset.

Reflection is time spent looking back over the day and contemplating what you’ve achieved and what went well. It could be that you accomplished something you’re proud of, or ticked off a few things on your list. It could be something big or small you reflect upon. It really doesn’t matter, it’s just about reflecting on a handful of good things about your day.

Rest is downtime. You can spend it how you like! You might have a long commute and decide to rest by listening to music, watching a movie, reading the paper or a book. Your rest time might be brief on some days and longer on others. It doesn’t matter what you do or for how long, it’s just about doing something that recharges your batteries and helps you feel relaxed.

Reset is all about how you’re going to show up. How do you want to feel and act when you walk through the door to your home?

When Dr Fraser taught people to use the Third Space model as part of a research project, he measured a huge 41 per cent improvement in behaviours in the home, inevitably having a wonderful impact on relationships and the family as a whole.

In a recent presentation I heard Dr Fraser deliver, he told a story of a dad whose kids would make themselves scarce whenever they heard him come home. He was always like a tornado ripping through the house and they didn’t want anything to do with him. When he found out, he was understandably devastated. He made a change and put the Third Space model into practice and turned things around.

It’s so easy to let the events of the day affect our time with our family, but they don’t have to. Our relationships with our kids and our partners play an important role in our kids’ development, happiness and mental health. Let’s do what we can to show up for them as our best possible selves. They deserve it, and we do too.

Jellybeans Music Program

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As part of the Creative Arts curriculum, in term 3 all students will be participating in a sequential whole school music program by external provider Jellybeans Music (see over). The focus is on meeting the curriculum requirements by covering musical concepts through engaging students in a wide repertoire of music pieces. This year students will participate in a new Australian popular music program. In addition, students who are talented in music will be challenged through extension parts in each piece of music. The Jellybeans music teachers are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the music skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. Research into the benefits of music education in schools highlights that students who study music:

show improved academic scores,

are more co-operative,

have higher levels of self-confidence

are more able to express their ideas

have improved motivation and engagement, persistence and self-discipline. In addition, a longitudinal study in the United States, ‘Champions of Change’ found that students who participate in regular music programs are far less likely to be involved with drugs, crime or have behavioural problems. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office with the payment of $45 by 3 August 2018. Funds are available to support families who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please contact the school if we can help. Thank you for your support of this new whole school initiative. September 2018

Dreaming and Living on the Land Dear Year 1 and 2 Parent/Caregiver, Animals of the Dreaming is an exciting incursion combining two fascinating aspects of Australia, native animals and dreamtime stories. Presented by Zoo educators from Taronga Zoo, they will weave dreamtime stories through the animal presentation. During the workshop, students will see animals such as snakes, possums, frogs and turtles. This incursion relates to a number of key learning areas, including Geography, History, English and Creative Arts. In particular, it relates to the geography unit on people and places. Through this incursion, your child will be given an opportunity to learn about the connections that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with places and animals. This incursion will be at the school on Friday 19 October 2018. The cost of this incursion is $5.00. Thank you for supporting this school activity.

Sincerely

Abby Clarke and Kylie Bonnett Brian J Dill
