Empowering Seniors 2015 ♦ Friday, October 2
One of the true highlights of last year was seeing yet another overflow crowd stream into
Empowering Seniors 2014. This event allows us to provide critical information and screenings
in a fun and casual environment to this important segment of our community, and they responded
in large numbers: over 1800 strong!
With your participation, we can continue to build upon each year’s achievements to make the
next one even more remarkable. Join us for our Seventh Annual Empowering Seniors Health and
Lifestyle Expo, which will be held on Friday, October 2, at the First Baptist Church Euless Cam-
pus West facility.
Surveys from last year’s attendees have shown that we have learned what they find fulfilling:
• They absolutely love the free health screenings
• They appreciate our timely and informative workshop speakers
• They look forward to the full range of exhibit booths
• They enjoy the free lunch, door prizes and entertainment
• They are very happy with expanding the age sector to 50+
We continue to make a major push to grow the age range to include more attendees ages 50 to
65. This has opened a broader range of prospective customers for our sponsors and vendors,
as you are able to market to future seniors and caregivers who are currently caring for their
parents and loved ones. They will also recognize that they may be receiving similar services in
the not-so-distant future.
We appreciate your consideration and look forward to working together this year on October 2!
Please mark your calendar and let’s make Empowering Seniors 2015 an even greater success for
our community and for you.
Sincerely,
Gary Fickes Tarrant County Commissioner, Precinct 3

“The entire experience was one of caring”
We attended the conference today and it was WONDERFUL. Please express our appreciation to those
who made this great informative event happen. I was overwhelmed by the professionalism and courtesies
apparent there. Thanks again.... Bill G., 2009 Attendee
Your event was magnificent. The organization, the space, the facility was outstanding.
Thank you for inviting us and I look forward to being a part next year.
Sincerely, Linda M., 2010 Attendee
The Seniors Event at First Baptist Church facilities on Friday in Euless was just
GREAT!!! Many seniors took advantage of this opportunity and there were Volunteers
everywhere. There were so many booths, exhibits and "things" that all people need to
know and to access. The nice box lunch was very good. Thank You and all the
Volunteers for the hard work in organizing and actually having this wonderful Event.
Sincerely, Michael D., 2010 Attendee
Empowering Seniors event is certainly one of the best in the state. It has been an honor to share the services
available from my agency to attendees. Sally B. DADS Liaison, 2011 Exhibitor
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We truly enjoyed the event! So professional and
organized. Everyone I talked to that came to the booth just raved on how fantastic
and much needed the event was so hats off to you and your team!!!
Joanne R., 2014 Exhibitor
What an awesome event! I was so happy to be a part of it. I thoroughly enjoyed
sharing some information with the attendees and I truly enjoyed their conversation,
questions, comments, and jokes. It was so nicely organized and ran so smoothly, it
was simply a joy to participate. Thanks for including us in this awesome event. I look
forward to supporting and participating in it next year! Monica S., 2014 Exhibitor
It was a pleasure to be a part of Empowering Seniors. It was very well-organized and we felt so welcomed.
Your Employees and/or volunteers were wonderful and so helpful. They seemed to have appeared out of
nowhere whenever a need was present. From parking, to setting up, to tearing down they were there to
offer whatever assistance was needed. The entertainment was absolutely great! It was a real treat to have
breakfast and lunch served at our booth. Both were so yummy. Empowering Seniors was so fun and a great
success for us. Our passion is to make people aware that they have choices to help their pain and mobility
problems and get them back to living a quality life. We feel that we were able to accomplish that at
Empowering Seniors. Lynda M. and Courtney W., 2014 Exhibitors

2012 County Best Practices
Innovation Award
is presented to
Tarrant County - Empowering Seniors
TEXAS ASSOCIATION o f COUNTIES Volunteer of the Year
Gary Fickes April 1, 2013
Tarrant County Commissioner, Precinct 3
Precinct 3 Commissioner, Gary Fickes, jokes that, unlike
the rest of the HealthCare Heroes’ honorees, he “came
kicking and screaming as a patient in dire need of a liver
transplant in 2008.”
In truth, his appreciation of health care began in 1994,
when he served on the Harris Health Exchange. “This
opened the window to reveal the depth of care and
dedication that goes into saving lives, improving outcomes
and helping families through the toughest times of their
lives,” he says.
Following his stint on the Health Exchange, he then became
a member of the board of trustees of Harris HEB Methodist
Hospital in Bedford, which he chaired for two years, and
the board of trustees of the Harris Methodist Health
System. As county commissioner, he works closely with
the JPS Health System on budgets and health care facilities
serving the residents of Northeast Tarrant County.
In 2009, he led his staff to create the Empowering Seniors
Expo, which has grown to host more than 1,500 attendees
this past year. The event partners with local hospitals to
offer free health care screenings for adults age 50-plus. In
2012, the Texas Association of Counties presented Gary
Fickes its Best Practice Award for Innovation for his team’s
development of Empowering Seniors.
Tarrant County was presented with the
2012 County Best Practices Innovation
Award for its Empowering Seniors Event
that helps the county’s senior residents
become more aware of resources for
problems relevant to aging, such as isolation,
transportation, health care, financial security,
identity theft and unemployment. The hope is
that by promoting these programs, other
counties facing similar challenges will be
inspired to replicate proven solutions.
