Maleny Hospital not to close

Rumours have been circulating around Maleny and have indeed been discussed locally on social media

A meeting of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Branch of the ALP is schedueled to be held on November 24th at 10am at the Maleny Neighbourhood Cen-tre to discuss this matter The Shadow Minister for Health is expected to address that meet-ing

Local State Member for Glass-house Mr Andrew Powell when asked about the rumours said ldquoRecently I have become aware that the Shadow Minister for Health Jo-Ann Miller has been spreading rumours that the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital is slated for closure These rumours are completely untrue and are simply aimed at creating fear in our community

Maleny-Stanley River Road flood repairs complete

Flood repairs on Maleny-Stanley River Road between Mears Lane and Kilcoy-Beerwah Road at Boo-roobin have finished

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the road has been re-stored to its original condition and welcomed the completion of works

ldquoOne lane of Maleny-Stanley River Road was closed after significant landslip and pavement damage oc-curred in January 2011rdquo Mr Powell said

ldquoIn August this year the embank-ment gave way while crews were working on it so a full closure of the road was required to allow heavy machinery to conduct emer-gency repairs

ldquoThe following month cracks ap-peared in the remaining operation-al lane and crews worked through the weekend to stabilise the road using over 2000 cubic metres of rock

ldquoCrews engineers and designers have done an excellent job repair-ing the damage in quite difficult conditions

ldquoIn addition to extensive works to stabilise the embankments pave-ment repairs were completed to ensure the road could open to two lanes for the first time in over two and a half yearsrdquo

Mr Powell said the patience and cooperation of the community and motorists was greatly appreciated

ldquoThis project has significantly im-pacted local residents but despite the inconvenience everyone has been co-operative which has helped crews get the job donerdquo

Meanwhile work is well underway

on the section between Lees and Scrubby Creek roads at Conondale with lane closures still in placerdquo he said

The new Grigor Bridge also at Conondale is on schedule with the concrete decks to be poured before Christmas

If the weather stays favourable both projects are on track for com-pletion at the start of next year

Ken Munsiersquos journeyLocal pottery and ceramic artist and Maleny man about town Ken Munsie has now left Maleny and is now living in Paris for the near future

Ken had an ambition to visit some of the artistic capitols of the world and choose to shift to New York and has now moved onto Paris Here is part of Kenrsquos story

The Pantheacuteon - ParisThe Pantheon was originally built as a church dedicated to Saint Genevieve and to house the reli-quary chasse containing her relics but and after many changes it now functions as a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distin-guished French citizens

The buildingrsquos history dates back to King Louis XV who vowed in 1744 that if he recovered from his illness he would replace the ruined church of the Abbey of St Genevieve with an edifice worthy of the patron saint of Paris He did recover and in 1757 construction began on the re-building of the old church The remodelled Abbey of St Genevieve was finally completed in 1790 - co-inciding with the early stages of the French Revolution One year later the National Constituent Assem-

bly ordered that the building be changed from a church to a mau-soleum for the interment of great Frenchmen

When its life was that of a Chris-tian church the outside walls of this great temple featured large windows - some of which were lead-lighted - however when its use changed to that of a mausoleum the windows were bricked in and large painted canvasses fixed to the wallsThe patriotic - and semi-religious - themes painted on the canvasses depict the glories of the French people

Visiting the Pantheon was a very moving experience ndash apart from the beauty and the grandeur of the building upstairs knowing that down in the crypt lay the remains of hundreds who have influenced the direction of this nation

At about the turn of the millenium the Victorian dairy farmer and manufacturing representative bodies supported removal of both state and federal regulations in respect to the dairy industry throughout Australia

Other milk producing states recognised their own arrangements were unsustainable if Victoria proceeded with deregulation largely because Australia s Constitution ensures free interstate trade and if Victoria deregulated it would be able to provide cheaper milk to neighbouring states and therefore out-compete local

Things that one remembers throughout lifeNot too many years ago the Hopper Family had some tough decisions to make because of the deregulation

of the Dairy IndustryThose decisions now paying off

School teacherMiss Roberts

Maleny Dairies is a family owned business situated in the picturesque hills of Maleny It is owned by the Hopper family who have been involved in the dairy industry in Maleny since 1948 always on the same farm This is also where the Maleny Dairies processing and bottling plant is situated

The farm milks predominately guernsey cows who graze on Hopper s own family farm as well as purchasing milk from eight other local farmers

Without Maleny Dairies many of these dairy farmers would have had to leave the dairy industry thus putting them as well as their farm workers out of work

In Queensland in 2003 there

Whilst other states were not in favour of de-regulation Victorian Dairy farmers won out

The cry was get bigger or get out and that is exactly what happened leaving many family dairy farmers in the lurch as they could not financially get bigger Many dairy families overnight just had to give dairying up and look for other employment many families had been on their farms for generations and believed that generations more would continue there Today their herd numbers around the 200 cows

As part of the operation there is a very popular tourist operation with guided visitors tours visiting the factory and farm Children can not only see where milk and associated products come from but can play with

the various farm animals As part of the tourist side there is a kiosk available Monday to Saturday where people can enjoy the relaxed country atmosphere and the great views for a time

You can also arrange to hold youngster s birthday parties at the kiosk and allow youngsters and the not so youngsters to enjoy that typical Maleny country atmosphere amongst the

The factory and farm presently employs 40 staff Dedicated staff have ensuredd that the Maleny Dairies products have won multiple golds and silvers at the Brisbane Ekka and the Sydney Royal Easter Show The Strawberry Yoghurt has won Champion Dessert twice at the Brisbane Ekka and the Skim milk won Champion milk at the Sydney Show New yoghurt products with a much wider range of flavours are being developed and will be on the market before too much longer

Kay Holyoak self professed boss of Maleny Dairies (don t tell Ross and Sally) said It is scary where we are going to get our milk from in another 10 years as more dairy farmers are forced out of the industry because of falling milk prices The price war between the two major supermarkets does not help either

The Queensland Governmentrsquos war on organised crime has been stepped up of recent months

Much of the pressure has come about by a perceived rise in vio-lent crime in specific areas such as Fortitude Valley in Brisbane The Gold Coast and other smaller locations around Queensland

Have no doubt there is a grow-ing tide of organised crime in Queensland and for that matter throughout Australia

Whilst the war on crime has taken the ldquobikie gangsrdquo head on it is im-portant to remember that these crimes are not all committed by the bikies

Not all bikies are involved in crimi-nal acts however those who are are very violent and very organ-ised It is this group that must be targetted not the law abiding social riders

Organised crime MUST be met with very with determined lawful action

Whilst the judiciary must play their part and consider the com-munity at large when adjudicat-ing cases and setting penalties it is not proper that they should be not be dictated to be gov-ernments or other bureaucratic bodies

Having taken this into account do not underestimate the power that organised crime has over the gen-eral community and it must be fought at every possible oppor-tunity and with whatever it takes without lessening the individuals legal rights

Sunshine Coast CouncilPresents Precinct Information

Sunshine Coast Council hosted a community meeting at the RSL hall on Saturday 2nd November 2013 This meeting was designed to update the community on some of the background to the Maleny Precinct development and issues relating to the very real progress that has been achieved

In her opening address Council-lor Jenny McKay spoke about the progress made in discussions with the Riverside Co-operative and that Council is hopeful that the board-walk along the edge of the Obi Obi in the centre of Maleny would be ready by June 2014 This would provide a continuous walkway from the Showground through Maleny and on to the Precinct

Planning for the swimming pool development is progressing well and she thanked Minister Andrew Powell for his continued involve-ment

Graham Hart as President of PAG (Precinct Advisory Group) reaf-firmed the relevance of the group to the community and the good working relationship that has developed with Council Graham told the meeting the fact that res-olutions regarding leased ares sub-mitted to PAG by the user groups had been unanimously endorsed stakeholder groups are MDS-RC Maleny Golf Club Unitywater Green Hills Friends of Pattemore House Lake Baroon Catchment Care Maleny Equestrian Group and Barung Landcare

Andrew Mills from Unitywater gave a talk on the impressive contribu-tion being made to the Precinct by his group particularly with regard

to infrastructure now completed tree plantings and improved bird life in the wetlands area

Richard Hill as Director of the Precinct Development confirmed the relevance of the Master Plan as approved by Council in 2010 and the ongoing need for cooperation between user groups particularly as there is limited flat land available for sport

Richardrsquos talk covered the exciting progress made by Unitywater in their lease area walking trails (near completion of the Heritage Trail al-ready) the signing of the Golf Club lease agreement Councilrsquos funding of $450000 and the extent of the community volunteer input with regard to construction of the golf course

With regard to Barung Landcarersquos lease and the use of the MDSRC lease area by Equestrian he con-firmed that no decisions had been finalised and he finished by con-gratulated Green Hills on securing $175000 in Commonwealth grant funding and generally the suc-cess of plantings that had been achieved by volunteers Barung Unitywater and school children

The question and answer session was completely focused on a piece of land approximately 500 square meters in extent

This area is necessary to square off an equestrian utility field but also to provide connectivity particular-ly we understand for birds The real facts in this issue need to be accepted alternatives explored and emotions removed in order to achieve a solution We believe that Council are progressing ideas

that will lead to an acceptable out-come for all

MDSRC as you know has been working with a great number of clubs to try and secure better facili-ties for everybody in the long term This has not been easy particularly with the diminishing flow of Coun-cil and grant funds and the short-age of suitable land in Maleny

The plans for the Precinct will include a venue for all equestrian disciplines thereby leaving land at the Showground for other sports that have a high demand for infra-structure (flood lighting and ablu-tions) In addition to equestrian the Precinct will provide a venue for additional sports ie cross country running mountain biking as well as events and family outings The MDSRC lease area on the Precinct is not designed as a preserve for equestrian activities ndash they would certainly be a major user but as happens at the Showgrounds other activities will be encouraged

Despite the very diverse nature of our membership MDSRC is very aware of the need to do things right and that includes preserving and developing the environment

We have amongst our member-ship some of the very best envi-ronmental experts and we contin-ually seek their advice Whatever Council has requested us to con-sider we have implemented in our planning There is not a member of PAG or may I say MDSRC that does not want a walking trail and forestation areas that aspire to be amongst the very best

Palmer is now officially the new Federal member for Fairfax

The September 7th Federal election appears in the dark past and it has taken until high noon on November 1st to know who has officially been chosen as the Federal member for Fairfax

At that time the Australian Electoral Commission finally finalised counting and re-counting of the votes and announced that Mr Clive Palmer of the Palmer United Party is the new member for Fairfax having defeated the LNP candidate Ted OrsquoBrien

On hearing the announcement Mr Palmer said ldquoI am thrilled by the result and humbled by the respon-sibility of representing the people of Fairfax in federal parliamentrdquo

The announcement comes as the new Federal Parliament is schedu-eled to hold the first sitting of the new parliament on November 11th 2013

The recount began at 9am on Thursday October 3rd and the pro-cess not being finalised until 3pm on Thursday 31 October 2013

With more than 89176 votes cast the final difference came down to a difference of 53 votes

After the distribution of preferences from votes for the other six candi-dates the AEC declared Mr Palmer-

mthe winner with 5003 of the vote over Mr OrsquoBrienrsquos 4997

In another twist to the 2013 Federal election the Palmer United Partyrsquos Zhenya Dio Wang was declared the

winner of the vote in the West Australian elector-ate of Pearce with a lead of only 14 votes over the Greenrsquos candidate Scott Ludlam

However a re-count was required by Mr Ludlam As the re-count began 1375 votes which had been verified during the

initial count could not be ldquolocated rechecked or verified in the recount processrdquo

The matter of the missing votes is to be investigated by former Aus-tralian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty This investigation will be held independent of the Australian Electoral Commission to ensure that a thorough and impar-tial investigation is conducted into this matter

The results for the electorate can-not be declared until that investiga-tion is finalised

After July 1st 2014 it appears that the Palmer United Party will hold the balance of power in the Senate

However Mr Palmer said that he believes that there is no doubt that the process is corrupt

The cry was get bigger or get out and that is exactly what happened leaving many family dairy farmers in the lurch as they could not financially get bigger Many dairy families overnight just had to give dairying up and look for other employment many families had been on their farms for generations and believed that generations more would continue there Today their herd numbers around the 200 cows

the various farm animals As part of the tourist side there is a kiosk available Monday to Saturday where people can enjoy the relaxed country atmosphere and the great views for a time

You can also arrange to hold youngster s birthday parties at the kiosk and allow youngsters and the not so youngsters to enjoy that typical Maleny country atmosphere amongst the

were approximately 2700 registered dairy farms providing dairy products mainly milk for drinking In 2013 there is only 550 production farms left whilst throughout Australia there are only approximately 7000 working dairy farms down from about 12000 a decade before

Kay Holyoak self professed boss of Maleny Dairies (don t tell Ross and Sally) said It is scary where we are going to get our milk from in another 10 years as more dairy farmers are forced out of the industry because of falling milk prices The price war between the two major supermarkets does not help either

In a relatively short period of time that the dairy has been operating there has been an astonishing number of winner s trophies assembled for the various products made by Maleny Dairies

At about the turn of the millenium the Victorian dairy farmer and manufacturing representative bodies supported removal of both state and federal regulations in respect to the dairy industry throughout Australia

The farm milks predominately guernsey cows who graze on Hopper s own family farm as well as purchasing milk from eight other local farmers

Without Maleny Dairies many of these dairy farmers would have had to leave the dairy industry thus putting them as well as their farm workers out of work

You can also arrange to hold youngster s birthday parties at the kiosk and allow youngsters and the not so youngsters to enjoy that typical Maleny country atmosphere amongst the

clean air and the animals

The factory and farm presently employs 40 staff Dedicated staff have ensuredd that the Maleny Dairies products have won multiple golds and silvers at the Brisbane Ekka and the Sydney Royal Easter Show The Strawberry Yoghurt has won Champion Dessert twice at the Brisbane Ekka and the Skim milk won Champion milk at the Sydney Show New yoghurt products with a much wider range of flavours are being developed and will be on the market before too much longer

Maleny Dairies has won Sunshine Coast Small Business of the year and owner Ross Hopper has won Rural Manager of the year

When asked how long was it possible to continue to dairy on the family farm at Maleny the Marketing Manager Kay Hopper (the secret boss) said Maleny Dairies is not going anywhere As long as people support us we will keep supplying our products Maleny Dairies products are now available extensively throughout the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane

were approximately 2700 registered dairy farms providing dairy products mainly milk for drinking In 2013 there is only 550 production farms left whilst throughout Australia there are only approximately 7000 working dairy farms down from about 12000 a decade before

It is often said that you can tell a good restaurant to eat at when the locals continually eat the product This is equally so at Maleny Dairies as staff consume a goodly portion of the product
