GREEN GRATTO STUNS FALL HIGHWEIGHTBy Evan Hammonds

Green Gratto, the longest-priced horse on

the board at 24-1, took six accomplished

sprinters gate to finish in Aqueduct's traditional

Thanksgiving Day feature, the Fall Highweight

Handicap (gr. III). The New Jersey-bred son of

Here's Zealous got the six furlongs in 1:09.95

after setting fractions of :22.29 and :44.71 under

Kendrick Carmouche.

Rubber-legged late, Green Gratto held off the

late surge of multiple grade I winner Palace to win

by a head and earn his first stakes victory. Fabu-

lous Kid rallied outside for third.

Bred by Kaz Hill Farm, Green Gratto is trained

by Gaston Grant and owned by Grant and Anthony

Grant. The 5-year-old horse finished second in the

Carter Handicap (gr. I) and third in the Tom Fool

Handicap (gr. III) earlier this year.

The race was likely the final run for a pair of

stellar New York-breds: Palace will soon join the

stallion roster at Spendthrift Farm, and four-time

grade II winner La Verdad will likely become a

broodmare for owner Sheila Rosenblum. BH

LATEST HEADLINES FROM BLOODHORSE.COMHEART TO HEART WIRE TO WIRE IN RIVER CITY Terry Hamilton's Heart to Heart bounced back from a 10th-place finish in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) to win the $100,000 River City Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs Nov. 26.

INVADERS POISED TO HAVE IMPACT IN JAPAN CUP A field of 18 is set for the Nov. 29 Japan Cup (Jpn-I), with the foreign contingent showing promise against a home team generally regarded as slightly less imposing than usual for a Japan Cup.

CONTROL STAKE TOO TOUGH IN THANKSGIVING 'CAP Maggi Moss' Control Stake, the lone 3-year-old in the field, got the jump on the competition from the gate and wasn't headed en route to a solid win in the $60,000 Thanksgiving Handicap at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Nov. 26.

HARD NOT TO LIKE SEEKS FOURTH GRADE I Hard Not to Like has been quite the traveler in her four-year career, racing at eight different racetracks and winning at five, and the gray mare will look to add another to her list in the Nov. 29 Matriarch (gr. IT).

ANDREYA'S REWARD SHIFTS TO DIRT FOR HUT HUT After four starts on grass to open her career, N.T.S. Stable and Kathryn Davey's Andreya's Reward will try dirt for the first time in the $75,000 Hut Hut Stakes Nov. 28 at Gulfstream Park West.

THE PIZZA MAN SCORES IN TURF CUPBy Lenny Shulman

Let loose approaching the final turn, Midwest Thor-

oughbreds' homebred The Pizza Man launched a

devastating run and though eight-wide in the lane,

inhaled the competition for an easy score in Del

Mar's $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (gr. IIT)

Nov. 26

The even-money favorite, The Pizza Man (English

Channel—I Can Fan Fan, by Lear Fan) avenged his

third-place finish in last year's race as well as his fifth

in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

Running on firm ground for the first time in his

last five races, the Illinois-bred 6-year-old gelding

overcame soft fractions while racing near the back

of the pack. Class Leader and Southern Freedom ran

the first six furlongs in 1:17.28, and The Pizza Man hit

the wire after 12 in 2:31.75.

Local California runner Big John B settled for

second. Power Foot claimed the show spot. The Pizza

Man, winner of this season's Arlington Million (gr. IT),

won for the fourth time in six 2015 starts. BH

AHH CHOCOLATE CAPTURES FALLS CITYBy Tom LaMarra

Stoneway Farm's Ahh Chocolate continued to show

her fondness for the Churchill Downs

dirt with a comfortable victory in the Falls

City Handicap (gr. II) Nov. 26. It was the

first stakes win for the 3-year-old Candy

Ride filly trained by Neil Howard.

The complexion of the Falls City

changed dramatically a few hours be-

forehand when Frivolous, last year's win-

ner, was scratched because of a tendon

injury. She has been retired and will be

bred in 2016, according to trainer Victo-

ria Oliver.

In her last start Ahh Chocolate finished

second in the one-mile Chiliukki Stakes

(gr. II) at Churchill, and in September she

won a second-level allowance race at the

Kentucky track. In her only other start

at the 1 1/8-mile Falls City distance, Ahh

Chocolate finished third in Pimlico's Black-

Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) in May.

ACTIVE TRADING FOR TATTERSALLS DAY 3By Carl Evans

Paul Thorman of England's Trickledown Stud,

one of the sagest men in the world of wean-

lings, provided a telling summary of trade as the

Tattersalls December foal sale completed its Nov.

26 session.

"Last year if a horse had a hole in it, you

dropped down a level to get started; this year you

won't get started," said Thorman. His comments

came as the clearance rate fell again—a theme at

Ireland's recent Goffs foal sale—yet the average

rose. Demand for the good ones is strong, but the

market is selective.

Day 3 proof was the 14 foals that brought

100,000 guineas ($149,630) or more compared

with five last year. The day's session-topper, a

Shamardal colt bought by Darley's John Ferguson

for 240,000 guineas ($359,112), aided a 4% in-

crease in gross to 8,576,000 guineas ($12,832,268),

even though 17 more horses were offered. The

average rose 5% at 36,650 guineas ($54,839) but

clearance fell 7% to 79%.

The Nov. 27 session is the strongest. Will end

users and pinhookers up their game to reverse the

declining buy-back rate? BH

Waller, with 120 in training at Rosehill

seven of which won nine group I races. BH

GROUP I WINS KEEP COMING FOR WALLERBy Myra Lewyn

Less than four months into Australia's 2015-16

racing season, 10 of the first 33 of Australia's 72

group I races have been won by nine horses trained

by Sydney-based Chris Waller.

Arriving in Sydney from New Zealand in 2000,

Waller has been Australia's champion trainer by

group I wins in recent years, including a record 14

with 13 individual runners for the 2014-15 season.

He appears poised to surpass that mark.

Overall, Waller has won 57 group I races, and

in October bolstered his record by landing one of

Australia's top four races—Melbourne Cup, Caulfield

Cup, W.S. Cox Plate, and Golden Slipper—for the

first time when the Street Cry filly Winx smashed the

Moonee Valley course record in the Cox Plate.

A FEW QUESTIONS WITH DAN METZGERBy Tom LaMarra

Today's MarketWatch interview is with Dan

Metzger, president of the Thoroughbred

Owners and Breeders Association, who discuss-

es major issues currently impacting owners and

breeders.

Blood-Horse Daily: What role could owners

and breeders play in improving the economics

of the business?

Dan Metzger: Thoroughbred owners and

breeders invest billions of dollars in our sport,

yet they face a tenuous economic model that

does not project financial growth and a reason-

able return on investment. Part of this is due to

an over-reliance on pari-mutuel betting as the

primary revenue stream to fund purses. While

expanded gaming has enhanced purses in a

number of regions, most of us recognize this

source of revenue remains dangerously exposed,

as demonstrated by casino-based purse reduc-

tions in Ontario, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Other sports have diversified and expanded

their revenue sources over the last 50 years, and as

a result they have become very successful. Owners

and breeders must become much more involved in

the development of additional revenue sources to

supplement the current purse structure, which in

its current form is disproportionate to the costs of

buying and training Thoroughbreds. In addition, the

rising costs of stud fees and high number of mares

bred per stallion are contributing factors affecting

the commercial sales market.

BHD: What are some of the structural issues

that hinder the industry's growth?

DM: Our sport lacks a clearly defined expan-

sion strategy, not only for the present but for

future generations as well. This is a tremendous

challenge. Our existing governance structure—

or lack thereof—does not allow us to set a stra-

tegic direction. The future sustainability of our

industry is at risk, as seen in recent years with

racetracks closing, declining attendance, and

our inability to market Thoroughbred racing to a

new generation of potential owners and fans.

The competition for the sports and enter-

tainment dollar is an enormous challenge in the

current climate, and the negative media percep-

tion directly influences our economic issues. For

those of us within the industry, we clearly un-

derstand our assets, as well as our liabilities, but

unfortunately the non-racing media coverage

has often been based on perception and not

always reality. We need more racehorse owners

in the sport as well as an increased fan base, but

without significant changes in these areas, our

challenges will be much more daunting.

BHD: How important is uniformity in regula-

tion and what must be done to achieve it?

DM: Owners want a level playing field, specif-

ically through uniformity in every racing jurisdic-

tion with a centralized approach toward one set

of medication rules. They want a stringent set of

rules with appropriate penalties for the wrongdo-

ers and the most robust and effective drug testing

in the world, both pre- and post-race. The uncer-

tainty of our drug policies and practices hampers

sustainable growth for the sport, and continued

fragmentation will only lead to a further decline

in the business of racing. We must address these

issues with a collaborative approach in order to

maximize the unique and limitless opportunities

presented to us by the Thoroughbred. BH
