Program Funding and RecruitmentThe COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all sectors of the American economy, including state budgets.
As the decision makers analyze the data, it is likely that there will be budgetary cuts in many areas including, unfortunately, education.
Make certain your school leaders fully understand the importance and significance of the HVACR industry, prior to them making decisions that can adversely affect your program or its funding.
The United States Department of Homeland Security has classified HVACR industry workers as essential.
➢ Protect the American food distributing system
➢ Keep data centers cooled and running, allowing for uninterrupted business conferencing (WebEx/Zoom), internet service and phone connectivity
➢ Maintain negative pressure rooms in health care facilities which play an integral role in preventing the spread of infectious diseases
We are presently experiencing the greatest loss of employment since the Great Depression
Not All Success Stories Begin with a Four-Year Degree
Students often make lifelong career choices blindly without data to help them make these decisions intelligently.
As a result, one may end up studying marine biology in Kansas where there are no oceans.
Many instructors found themselves
in class one day and teaching
online the next
We want to make certain you are aware of resources now available to help you teach remotely.
➢ Webinars
➢ Presentations
➢ Online Courses
➢ Remote Testing Options
Webinars
This series brings industry authors and manufacturers directly into every classroom, delivering content specific to the curriculum you offer.
Participants have the option to download a free certificate of completion for each webinar.
Presentations
For a limited time, our most popular instructor resources (PowerPoint presentation & instructor supplements) that correlate to our publications will be available to our proctors, FREE OF CHARGE.
This material can be utilized in online classes being offered by instructors, using their LMS, or online training portals.

The intent of this session is to provide options, while stimulating productive, hopefully ongoing discussions. With participation in this event from many different schools and institutions, spanning the entire state of California, not all suggestions will be applicable to, or appropriate for, everyone.
We are simply trying to plant seeds.
Let’s see what grows… together.
Challenges We Are Presently Facing
• How to keep our train(ing) moving forward
• How to deliver high-quality, remote instruction
• How to keep our students engaged/enrolled
• How to issue respectable credentials
• How to maintain institutional credibility and reputation
• How to ensure quality of program completers
• How to remain a reliable provider of technicians to contractors
Remember, although we, as educators, are facing many
challenges, our students are facing challenges as well.
Challenges Provide Opportunities
• When all is going well, why change?
• Find new things to do
• Evaluate present practices and procedures
• New ways to do the things we do
• Refine/redefine what we presently do
• Rethink old thinking
• Change with the times
“The more we are challenged, the more we learn, but we have to be willing and active participants in the process” Eugene Silberstein 2020
This is Like Learning to Swim…. All Over Again
• Fear of the unknown
• Sink or swim
• No turning back
• No choice but to move forward
• Reality often not as bad as perceptions
• Can ultimately be enjoyable
• Why didn’t I do this sooner?
Pushing Toward Online/Remote Instruction
• Online learning is not a new concept
• Most people don’t like change
• If it worked in the past, it will continue to work in the future
• “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
• Most institutions have been pushing for more remote-instruction
• More experienced (older) instructors typically reluctant
• Newer instructors are more likely to embrace online/digital platforms
A Lot Has Changed…
Being on the Right Track Isn’t Always Enough
“Even if you are on the right track,
you’ll eventually get run over if you
just sit there.” Unkown
What Does an Institutional Credential Signify?
➢ Compliance with institutional policies
➢ Compliance with programmatic policies
➢ Compliance with programmatic requirements
➢ Satisfactory performance on knowledge-based assessments
➢ Satisfactory performance on skills-based assessments
➢ Qualification/Authority in a subject area
Remote Lecture Sessions
• Number of students per picture can be increased
• Instructors do not need to be ”local”
• Schools can partner to reap benefits of most effective teachers
• Schools can “share” talent
• Instructors can concentrate on their area of expertise
• Students benefit from the “best” teachers

SKILLS VERIFICATIOM FORM

Importance of a Paper Trail
• Documentation of acquired skills
• Third-party verification
• Reduce legal exposure
• Provide credential validity
• Provide credential respectability
• Strengthen institutional reputation
Simulations and Virtual Reality• Should not be the go-to solution
• Possibly viable when no other option exists
• Documentation should accurately indicate method
• VR cons: Availability/cost of platform, face-to-face interaction
• VR pros: More life-like experience, accurate representation
• Simulation cons: Less “real-world” feel, less accurate representation
• Simulation pros: More cost effective, can be accessed remotely
Some of Our Students are Already Working
• Work during the day, school at night
• Most have “learned” the trade from others in the trade
• Looking to fill in the gaps
• Most have smart devices
• Many have Go-Pro or similar devices
• Can make videos of themselves
• Videos submitted to instructor
• Possible follow-up discussion
• Progress documented
Expanded laboratory hours
Lab time broken into time slots (2
to 4 hours)
Greatly reduced number of
students per time slot
Lab is “zoned” to keep students
apart
Glove and mask requirement
Tool sanitation/rotation
between lab sessions
Equipment cleaning between
lab sessions
Requires additional
instructor time
Staggered Lab Sessions
Should be in alignment with CDC and institutional guidelines
Hand-washing required before entering the lab and at appropriate time intervals
Access to fire extinguishers, first aid kits and safety items should not be restricted
Gloves and masks should be required at all times
Tools should be rotated and cleaned thoroughly between uses
Use of individual tool kits should be encouraged
Equipment cleaning between lab sessions
Group breaks and social gathering should be strongly discouraged
