Now in it’s 17th year, The Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health’s Inspiration Awards is one of Ottawa’s

The Royal’s Award events have raised well in excess of $3.9 million dollars for patient care, comfort and

research.

Gabrielle Eyahpaise

At the age of 14, Gabrielle was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Left home-bound, and often

bed-bound, she began feeling helpless and became suicidal. As Gabrielle began to recover, she also began to feel less

alone. She travelled to the International OCD Conference and learned about Exposure and Response Prevention, a

treatment that would ultimately work for her. Today, Gabrielle continues to speak publicly. Her openness and honesty

has encouraged many youth to open up, feel understood, and no longer alone.

Chris Nimhey

In 2001, Chris was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, retreating into the dark and only left for doctor’s

appointments. Eventually, treatment started to take effect. Chris returned to teaching part-time and began writing

about his mental health challenges and publishing his first novel. Since 2014, Chris has regularly participated in

The Royal’s Is It Just Me? mental health education program for youth. Chris was nationally recognized as a “Face of

Mental Illness” with the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health, and was presented with a Mayor’s

City Builder Award.

Denis Riordan

Denis Riordan, Ph.D. aptly describes his journey with helping his daughter as a marathon. In 2016, while residing

in Nova Scotia, Denis’ accomplished 30-year-old daughter was unexpectedly diagosed with schizophrenia. Denis,

with no caregiving experience, quickly dedicated himself to helping his daughter. He relocated to Ottawa and

became a mental health advocate almost overnight. Denis is tirelessly devoted to mental health advocacy and

education and is working to replicate Ottawa’s several mental health caregiving programs in Halifax.

Parents’ Lifelines of Eastern Ontario

From its inception as a parent-led movement to its current vital service of offering support for parents and

families across the Ottawa region, Parents’ Lifelines of Eastern Ontario (PLEO) has become a critical system

component that effectively supports clients where and when they need help. PLEO has taken a leadership

role in breaking down stigma by reaching out to the community to increase understanding and tolerance. For

the last 20 years, this grassroots organization has been providing resources, support, and skills to enable and

empower the voice of parents and families.

Ottawa Paramedics Peer Support Team

Day and night - first responders are on the frontline of traumatic events, caring and protecting each of us.

There is an unimaginable mental toll these experiences inflict on a person. Up until recently, there was minimal

support and intervention for first responders who were experiencing a reaction or stress as a result of an

incident. Enter the creation of the Ottawa Paramedic Peer Support Team. This voluntary 50-member Team,

allows first responders 24/7 access to one-on-one support and crisis intervention resources. Incredibly, the

Ottawa Paramedic Peer Support Team always puts their peers before themselves helping in times of crisis,

educating and decreasing stigma. Their passion, work and continued efforts in mental health advocacy are

truly transformational.

The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (The Royal) is committed to serving the mental health needs

of patients and families across Eastern Ontario. We are also dedicated to exploring new approaches

to mental health treatment through leading-edge research and education. At The Royal, the goals are simple and clear

— to get those suffering from mental illness into recovery faster and to transform the way mental illness is treated.

Mental illness — specifically major depression — is the single greatest cause of workplace disability in our society

today. Apart from the financial burden, the human cost is enormous. Normal healthy lives are devastated. Families are

torn apart. Lives are lost. We are dealing with a health care problem of epidemic proportions; it is only going to get

worse. This is the reason we need your support.

As one of the largest providers of mental health care in Canada — The Royal is here to transform the lives of

those suffering from mental illness with innovative and effective treatments, and to identify new methodologies

for prevention and early detection.

Inpatient, outpatient and community outreach programs at The Royal:

• Anxiety Disorders• Assertive Community Treatment Teams• Community Outreach• Integrated Forensic Program• General Psychiatry in Transition• Geriatric Psychiatry• Intensive Assessment and Intervention

• Mood Disorders• Ottawa Operational Stress Injury Clinic• Schizophrenia• Sleep Disorders• Substance Use & Concurrent Disorders• Youth Psychiatry

Our goals are simple and clear — to get more people suffering from mental illness into recovery faster, and to transform the way major depression is treated.

“From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave you get this bit of a glow. You don’t get that with

other galas [where] you are just there and aren’t participating as much.”

— Returning Corporate Sponsor

“The value I get out of it is being with people who are like-minded and want to support a cause and contribute

to that cause in more ways than one. The financial aspects of the funds being raised that night as a result of

my being there and being involved, the educational awareness that arises, that sense of community where

you can all work and come together for a cause — the rallying of support. That is the value I see. The dollars

we spend makes very good value for money.”
