Series History with the Dubuque Fighting Saints In the final meeting between the

teams this season, the Des Moines Buccaneers are looking to salvage a win after losing

the first three games. The Buccaneers haven’t defeated Dubuque since Nov. 26, 2011 a

streak of seven straight matchups.

Each of the three Dubuque wins have been fairly low scoring with the Fighting Saints

averaging 3.3 goals per game and the Bucs held to 1.3 goals per game.

Dubuque’s Karson Kuhlman leads all scorers in the series with 5pts (3g, 2a) while

goalie Benjamin Johansson is 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA and .957 save percentage.

Tanner Karty (1g, 1a) and Danny Elser (2a) lead the Bucs with 2 points each.

Hall of Fame Announcement Saturday The 2014 Class to the Des Moines

Buccaneers’ Hall of Fame will be announced during the second intermission on Saturday

night. Five new inductees will be unveiled, joining the 25 current members which in-

clude players, coaches and non-hockey personnel.

A volunteer committee of fans has selected the inductees each of the last two years.

Guns & Hoses Fundraiser Sunday The 3rd annual Guns & Hoses Day will be this

Sunday with a doubleheader of hockey. At 1:30pm, area police vs. firefighters will

compete with the Bucs vs. Waterloo game at 5pm. The entire day is a fundraiser for

Easter Seals of Iowa, culminating with a jersey auction following the Bucs’ game.

Staying out of the Box In games in which the Buccaneers have been short-handed three

times or less, they have a record of 8-5-2 (.600%).

Des Moines is 10-20-4 when short-handed four times or more (.353%)

In their last 26 games, the Bucs have been short-handed three times or less eight times

(5-2-1).

Record when Scoring Among players who have scored in at least five games, the Bucs

record is as follows; Patrick Grasso (3-2-1), Danny Elser (7-2-1), Oskar Norlov (3-0-2),

Jack Jenkins (3-2-1), Willem Nong-Lambert (2-3-2), Tanner Karty (7-3-0), Michael

Marnell (5-2-1), Ryan Galt (5-1-3), Marcel Godbout (4-5-2).

First Sellout The Buccaneers’ crowd of 3,418 on March 8th vs. Waterloo is the team’s

first sellout of the season. In their last five home games, the Buccaneers have averaged

2,819 fans.

Overtime Victory The Buccaneers March 1st overtime win at Youngstown is the

team’s first skate off victory in the five-minute session since Gasper Kopitar beat

Youngstown at home Jan. 20th, 2012.

Wins vs. Losses Goals For In their 18 victories, the Buccaneers are averaging 3.9 goals

for and allowing only 2.0 goals against.

Wins vs. Losses Goals Against In their 32 non-wins, the Buccaneers are averaging 1.7

goals for an allowing 3.9 goals against.

The 50 Game Split Since 2009-2010, through 50 games the Buccaneers have averaged

a record of 20-26-4 (44 points).

The Final 10 Split Since 2009-2010, the Buccaneers have ended their season with an

average record of 3-6-1

Note, with 2012-2013, games 54-64 were used, as that season was longer.

Affiliates in the Line-Up The Buccaneers will have at least two affiliate players in the

line-up. Goaltender Leif Hertz a Kingston, ONT native who was the Bucs’ 8th round

Phase I pick in May and forward Ryan Dmowski from East Lyme, CT is a UMass-

Lowell recruit and was one of two first round selections’s in last May’s Phase I draft.

Both players were with the team last weekend with Dmowski playing on Friday and

Saturday.

Late Rallies The Buccaneers’ comeback win at Youngstown on March 1st is the third

time in the last month the team has rallied from two goals down in the third period to at

least force overtime. Des Moines also rallied to force overtime Feb. 15th vs. Youngs-

town and Feb. 22nd vs. Sioux City.

The difference with the March 1st game being that Des Moines would get the full two

points.

The win on March 1st is the Buccaneers’ first when trailing after two periods since

March 24, 2013 at Omaha.

Firing Shots on Net The Des Moines Buccaneers are 11-8-4 when they register a

minimum of 31 shots on goal.

Fewer Power Plays The Buccaneers have had just 198 power plays, the fewest in the

entire USHL. That’s an average of 4.1 per game.

Happy Holiday Season The Buccaneers went 3-2-1 (.583%) in December, their first

winning month of the season. Des Moines averaged 3.2 goals per game, a positive sign after

struggling to score in November.

Ryan Galt 6pts (2g, 4a) led the team followed by Marcel Godbout, Tanner Karty and

Michael Marnell who each had 5 points.

The team combined for a +22 rating.

Working Overtime Four of the last nine Buccaneers’ games have gone all the way to a

shootout. Prior to this, the Bucs had gone 14 straight games without an overtime game.

Post-Holiday Improvement The Buccaneers are in a position that, with a good post-holiday

run, they will finish with a good record and possibly be in the playoff hunt.

Over the previous five seasons, the Buccaneers are 54-100-20 (.368) after the holidays

The only post-holiday break winning record came in 2010-2011 (19-17-4)

Winning Percentage into Holidays The Buccaneers .458 winning percentage heading into

the holiday break is actually better than the .438% average over the previous five seasons.

Among the Higher-Ups Though only the top four teams in the Western Conference make

the postseason, if the Buccaneers finish any higher than seventh place it’s a step in the right

direction. Des Moines hasn’t finished better than that since the league expanded to eight-

team divisions in 2010-2011.

Des Moines’ last finished as high as fifth, in 2005-2006 when they finished tied with Cedar

Rapids for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Working Overtime Since the USHL elevated to Tier I status in 2002-2003, the

Buccaneers have averaged 10 overtime games a season. Des Moines has played four over-

time games so far this season.

Improved Defense Defense and goaltending has been a sore spot for the Buccaneers in some

recent seasons but so far this year, the team has been much improved in this area.

The Buccaneers’ are on pace to allow 204 goals, which would be a 41 goal improvement

from last season and their second fewest allowed since 2006-2007.

Des Moines had gone 14 straight games without an overtime decision before their 5-4

shootout win over Lincoln last Saturday.

Nothing Settled The cliché of “it’s still early” when it comes to the standings has tangi-

ble proof going back to last season. With the same playoff format in place, of the eight

USHL teams to make the playoffs, three of them had sub .500% record at some point in

November.

Alumni Update 2009-2010 Buccaneers J.P. Burkemper and Yasin Cisse will make their profes-

sional debuts this weekend in the ECHL, becoming the first players from that Bucs’ class to head

to the pros. Burkemper played three years at Minnesota State while Cisse spent two years at Bos-

ton University before heading to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Building Blocks in Place The Buccaneers return 14 players from a season ago, fulfilling the

coaching staff’s plan that began at the start of 2012-2013. Not only are players back, but many

were impactful players as youthful rookies.

Willem Nong-Lambert led the team in goals (17), while Ryan Galt and Mike Marnell had 26pts

and 25pts respectively.

The Buccaneers’ led the league in penalty minutes as well.

Playing in Front Of their 64 games played last season, the Buccaneers held a lead in 40 games.

Series History with the Waterloo Blackhawks Waterloo leads the series this season

having won both of the games. The Blackhawks have never trailed in the two games, but

did need a goal from Peter Krieger in the final minute of regulation last Saturday to

escape Buccaneer Arena with a 3-2 win.

Krieger (2g, 1a) and Brandon Montour (3a) lead the Blackhawks with 3 points each.

Des Moines won the first three meetings last season but dropped the last one, and have

now lost three straight in the series.

Oddly, the teams haven’t had a game extend to a shootout since 2008.

Improved Defense The Buccaneers are on pace to allow 197 goals against which would

be the second fewest since 2005-2006 (allowed 177 goals in 2010-2011)

Guns & Hoses Fundraiser Sunday The 3rd annual Guns & Hoses Day will be this

Saturday.

The 50 Game Split Since 2009-2010, through 50 games the Buccaneers have averaged

a record of 20-26-4 (44 points).

Late Rallies The Buccaneers’ comeback win at Youngstown on March 1st is the third

time in the last month the team has rallied from two goals down in the third period to at

least force overtime. Des Moines also rallied to force overtime Feb. 15th vs.

Youngstown and Feb. 22nd vs.

Scouting the Dubuque Fighting Saints

Play Cedar Rapids on Wednesday

Go into their game Wednesday with their magic number to secure a playoff spot at 13 over

fifth place Green Bay. The defending Clark Cup Champions have made the postseason

every year since entering the league in time for the 2010-2011 season.

Seamus Malone is tied for second in short-handed goals with four.

Alexx Privitera is second in defenseman points with 39 (third in goals with 9).

Defenseman Phil Boje has six goals on the power play.

Have been very stingy at home, allowing an average of just 1.3 goals against at the Mystique

Community Ice Center.

Matt Shaw is in his first season as head coach of the Fighting Saints after spending time as

an assistant in the National Hockey League. His son Hayden currently plays for Waterloo.

Dubuque has the best home power play at 24.8%.

Scouting the Omaha Lancers

Have already secured a playoff spot after missing the postseason last year for the first time

in over 20 seasons. Now their focus is on getting the Anderson Cup.

Have been consistent all season having gone pointless in two straight games only once, and

no winless streaks of more than two games.

After goalie Cole Bruns was the workhorse to start the season, Hayden Hawkey has been the

goalie of chance, playing in seven of the last eight games. Bruns hasn’t appeared in two

straight games since December.

Jake Randolph (75pts) and Tyler Vesel (70pts) are #1-#2 in USHL scorer. Randolph leads

the league in assists (55) while Vesel is second in goals (32).

10 of Vesel’s goals have come on the power play, the second most in the league. His six

game winning goals also rank second.

Entering the weekend, their magic number to secure home ice advantage in the first round of

the playoffs is 10 over third place Sioux City.

Omaha has celebrated 14 sellouts at the two-year old Ralston Arena this season.

Scouting the Waterloo Blackhawks

Enter the weekend having won three straight games and gaining a point in four straight (3-0-

1).

Lead the league with 196 goals for an average of 3.9 goals per game. They’ve outscored

opponents 78-45 in the second period.

Waterloo fires an average of 40 shots on goal per game and have been out shot only 11

times (6-4-1).

Had a 22 game point streak from Nov. 23rd until Feb. 7th. They were 20-0-2 during that

time and vaulted into the Anderson Cup race lead.

Brandon Montour is fifth in USHL assists with 38 and leads all defensemen with 49pts.

Goalie Cal Peterson is fifth in GAA at 2.49 and leads the league with 25 wins.

Head Coach P.K. O’Handley set a new USHL record with his 530th career win on Jan. 18th

and is still going strong. The city of Waterloo celebrated the accomplishment by

proclaiming Jan. 27th “P.K. O’Handley Day” in the community and a pregame ceremony

was held. His next milestone would be 550 wins, and he is 10 away from that.

This is O’Handley’s 18th season in the USHL and his 11th win the Blackhawks.
