By Eddie KantarResponding to 1NT, entry considerations

Unblocking Dlr: South ♠ K 6 3 Vul: E-W ♥ J 10 9 ♦ A J 5 2 ♣ 8 6 4 ♠ Q 10 9 ♠ 8 7 6 5 ♥ Q 7 6 5 2 ♥ A 4 ♦ 10 6 3 ♦ K Q 9 ♣ 7 2 ♣ K 9 5 3 ♠ A J 4 ♥ K 8 3 ♦ 8 7 4 ♣ A Q J 10

West North East South 1NT Pass 2NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♥5.Bidding commentary: The sequence assumes

that 2NT is natural, not a transfer. If 2NT is played as a transfer, responder has to go through Stayman to raise to 2NT. As South, with a balanced 15 HCP, pass 2NT. With any 17-point hand and most 16– point hands, bid 3NT. A 16-point hand divided 4-3-3-3 and lacking intermediates also does best to pass a raise to 2NT. As North, with a 4-3-3-3 hand pattern, you need 9 HCP to raise to 2NT, 8 HCP is not enough.

Defensive commentary: As East, win the ♥A and return the ♥4. Had the opponents gone through Stayman, South denying a four-card major, you would know partner has at least five hearts. Also, both defenders should play South for 15 HCP when he passes 2NT.

Play commentary: As South, plan ahead before playing to the first trick. Your plan should be to try to bring in clubs for four tricks if the finesse works. Even if the finesse works, you may have

to repeat it three times (East might have four or five clubs headed by the king. Three finesses mean three dummy entries. Do you see three? It looks like there are

two, but there are three – if you unblock the ♥K at trick one! You really aren’t costing yourself a trick as the queen is marked in the West hand after the lead of a low heart. Your unblock creates a third dummy entry in hearts. Play the same with ♥Qxx. Dump the queen at trick one to make sure you have a dummy entry.

Defensive commentary #2. As West, win the second heart and play a third, clearing the suit.

Play commentary #2. As South, win the third heart in dummy and take club finesse #1, leading a low to the queen (playing the higher equal for deceptive purposes). After the ♣Q holds, cross to the ♠K and take club finesse #2, this time leading a club to the jack (higher remaining equal). When that holds, cross to the ♦A and take club finessse #3. When the smoke clears, you have eight tricks: four clubs, two spades one heart and one diamond. You play so beautifully.

Hall of Fame

BBO founders Sheri Winestock and Fred Gitelman (right) with current BBO head and chief programmer Uday Ivatury receive the Blackwood Award, honoring their achievement in designing the groundbreaking website.

The NaturalIndeed, in his presentation of Levin, longtime

partner Steve Weinstein directed his opening remarks to Nickell. “Can we just count this as our team meeting?” he asked. “Three members of the Nickell team being inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight. And of course, Nick, Jeff and Koach (Eric Kokish) are already in.”

Weinstein said it is rare to see exceptional talent coupled with a relentless work ethic. “Add to that a fierce will to win and a refusal to accept defeat, top that off with the ability to use every result – win or lose – as motivation to improve, and you get something truly extraordinary: a legend. Michael Jordan. Wayne Gretsky. Bobby Levin.”

Weinstein illustrated Levin’s strength as a partner with a story about the Vanderbilt final where the pair bid to a grand slam missing the ace of trumps.

“We were both steaming. We took a break after that board, and we’re outside smoking in silence for a minute, just staring daggers at each other.

“And then Bobby says says, ‘I’m a moron, that hand was all my fault.’ I knew he didn’t mean it, but that didn’t matter. It was just what we both needed. We went back in and played eight solid boards and won. That’s Bobby Levin.”

Levin acknowledged his many family members in attendance, with special thanks to his mother Sheila for teaching him bridge “She has always blamed my teammates and partners for my losses and given me 110 percent of the credit for my wins.”

He thanked past partners, and added, “I’ve been so lucky over the years to play with sponsors who were also great friends, culminating with a spot on a team with Nick Nickell. I want to thank him for being one of the truly good guys in the game.”

Levin had plenty of stories to tell about Weinstein. “Nothing,” he said, “compares to my good fortune of landing Steve Weinstein as my partner.”

He noted that Weinstein names Paul Soloway as his favorite bridge player of all time.

“You wanna know who my favorite bridge player of all time is?” he said. “Jill Lev,” with a nod toward his wife. “She has been so instrumental in helping me be the best that I can be.”

Levin has two world championships, two silver medals, 30 North American Championship titles, and five Cavendish Invitational Pair wins.

The Piano PlayerJeff Meckstroth, who presented his “partner in

crime” Rodwell for induction, entered the Hall of Fame last year.

“I think I’m even more excited this year to see my partner and others on the Nickell team inducted.”

Meckstroth said his father emphasized the partnership aspect of the game. “So that’s how I grew up – bridge is a partnership game … bridge is a partnership game …”

Jack Oest played matchmaker between Meckstroth and Rodwell. “From day one I spotted Eric’s enthusiasm, his incredible talent and genius,” Meckstroth said. “I said, I think this is the guy I’ve

been waiting for.”Meckstroth detailed Rodwell’s contributions as

a theoretician before extending his hand: “My friend Eric, welcome to the Hall of Fame.”

Rodwell recognized his many family members in attendance, including his parents, who just celebrated 66 years of marriage.

When he was 14, Rodwell took up the game. He played at the local club in West Lafayette IN where his dad was a biochemistry professor.

“The first good player who would play with me was Sudhakar Kunte,” Rodwell said. From Kunte, Rodwell learned, “playing with someone better that you is a good way to get the wheels moving.”

That someone would, of course, turn out to be Meckstroth, in 1974. “We played in a tournament in Defiance OH, and I was amazed when he bid and made a slam.”

Rodwell, known for bidding development, is credited with the invention of the support double and serious 3NT.

He has amassed 62 NABC wins, seven world titles, four silver medals, one Barry Crane Top 500 race and 2008 Player of the Year.

CatsNickell split duties with George Jacobs in

introducing new Hall of Famer Katz. Calling Katz “the ultimate gentleman,” Nickell said his partner of nine years is a natural coach and teacher.

“He is a great partner and teammate. When Ralph is at the table, he pulls harder for his partner than he does for himself.”

Jacobs called attention to Katz’s formal attire, noting the shoes. “At the first Cavendish we played, I insisted he wear a tuxedo, but back then, he wore black gym shoes.”

Jacobs included Katz’s wife, Martha and son, Sam, in recognizing the enormous contributions the family has made to the game.

“You belong in the Hall of Fame not just because of what you are to bridge, but because of all you’ve done for bridge.”

Ralph learned bridge while visiting his Uncle Lou, and after thanking the Hall of Fame Committee for the nomination, he thanked his uncle for “the road map for the rest of my life.”

At his first tournament, he says he lied about his masterpoint total: “I told them I had 20 masterpoints when I only had 10.” As it turned out, his partner lied, too. It was Ken Kranyak, “who told the partnership desk he had 5 points when he was really almost a Life Master.”

Katz continued to play into college – both bridge and baseball. When “the bridge bug bit,” he wanted to take a semester off to focus on playing. He found his parents surprisingly supportive. They had two conditions: that he go back to school and that he pay for his own tournaments. He completed college with relatively few visits to the ER as a result of baseball injuries, explaining his parents’ ready acceptance of bridge as an alternative.

Expressing gratitude to his family, Katz says that he met his wife, Martha at a tournament and, “as my father would say, we had a merger, and out of the merger came the best dividend ever, Sam.”

Katz has won 23 NABC titles and topped the Player of the Year list in 2001.

Strange BrewThe von Zedtwitz Award is given to given to

players out of the limelight – living or deceased – who had an outstanding tournament record and achieved prominence in the game.

2018 von Zedwitz Award winner Mark Molson, who died in 2006, was remembered by longtime partner Boris Baran. The two, who played together for 30 years, met after a post club-game gathering at the local Chinese restaurant.

Baran recalled a deal from the 1987 Life Master Pairs.

“It was kind of a bad news—good news—bad news story,” Baran said. The pair had a high-spirited auction in which both players cuebid clubs. It being matchpoints, they ended up in 7NT. As it turns out, the cuebids had been based on voids. Quickly, the opening lead was the ♣ A.

“The good news is that the lead was made out of turn,” Baran said. “The bad news is that Mark tabled his hand, thereby condoning the lead.”

Molson was, Baran said, humble, caring, a devoted husband, and he adored his daughter, Jennifer. “It was a shocking and tragic loss. He left us all many fond memories while establishing a firm bridge legacy.”

Molson’s widow, Janice Seamon-Molson, accepted the Hall of Fame trophy and conveyed a loving thank you from Jennifer, who could not be present.

Molson won a silver medal in the Bermuda Bowl and a bronze medal in the Rosenblum Knockout Teams. He had seven Canadian National Team Championships, one Canadian Open Pairs Championship and seven NABC titles.

AIThe ACBL Hall of Fame Blackwood Award

is traditionally given to individuals who have contributed greatly to the game of bridge without necessarily being world class players.

“I don’t think any one thing as changed my life as much as BBO has,” said Berkowitz in introducing BBO presenter Christal Henner.

Christal Henner echoed the sentiments of many during the evening in presenting Bridge Base Online as the Blackwood Hall of Fame honoree. BBO, the creation of Fred Gitleman and Sheri Winestock, makes it possible to play bridge anywhere, anytime … “few have had such an enormous impact.”

In growing BBO, Henner noted that it was hard to separate “Fred, the world-class programmer and Fred, the world-class player. And their first client was world-class investor Warren Buffett.”

Henner described the third partner of the venture, programmer Uday Ivatury as a “tech wizard with a wicked sense of humor as spicy as his food palate.”

Gitelman accepted the Hall of Fame statue on behalf of the phenomenon that is BBO.

“We are the first generation that failed to take up bridge in numbers,” Gitelman said. “We” – indicating Winestock and himself – “we thought we might be able to make a difference. We invoked ‘Field of Dreams’: If you build it, they will come.”

He acknowledged the incredible support that BBO has enjoyed from the world’s expert community of players and the players who play two million hands of bridge a day.

“BBO’s receipt of the Blackwood Award is affirmation that we have made a difference.”

But it is not enough, Gitelman concluded. Younger generations must be reached through their phones, tablets and laptops he said, issuing a call for 19-year programmers to take up the mission.

“If bridge is to survive, technology must play a starring role.”

Stands By MeJoAnna Stansby brought her husband to

the stage to receive the Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award.

To illustrate Lew’s integrity, JoAnna offered an example from the 2017 U.S. Bridge Championships. They were defending a doubled partscore which was destined to go down, and nothing much mattered until Lew accidentally dropped the ♦J on the table as

IMP Strategy (for Swiss teams, knockout teams

and IMP pairs)By Steven Gaynor

In a matchpoint event, we are always looking for that extra trick or playing in a risky major suit or notrump rather than a poorer-scoring, but safer, minor suit. Why? Because it pays off big time when it works.

We may even risk our contract to make a play for an overtrick. On defense we strive not to blow a trick rather than beat a contract.

In IMP scoring, however, the considerations change drastically. Now just making or beating a contract can give us a big score, but extra tricks are chump change. (OK, I know we have all won or lost a match by 1 IMP.)

Winning IMP strategies include:1. Make your contract. Do not worry about

overtricks or undertricks. If you are in the right spot, things will usually work out in your favor.

2. Trust your bidding system. Even at pairs, you will be a winner if you are in the right suit at the right level despite blowing an overtrick once in a while.

3. Stretch to bid a game. If vulnerable, game should be bid even if it is as a low as a 40% chance. If not vulnerable, it should be a 50% prospect.

4. If you bid three vulnerable games that your opponents do not bid and you make only one of them, you break even. If you are in an auction and the decision is now in your hands whether to bid game or not --- if you have to think about it, bid game.

5. Do not double their partial. You better have them down two in your own hand before you chance a double of a bid below game. And ‘down two in your own hand’ means you have a fistful of trump tricks. Do not count on your partner for many of these tricks.

6. Do not go for numbers. Don’t make some wild, preemptive bid just because you have six or seven (or more) cards in one suit. It is not worth it.

7. Your competitive bidding should be more constructive at IMP scoring. Upgrade your overcalls by at least a queen. This means that if you would overcall with 8 points at pairs, overcall with 10 or more at IMPs.

8. Play your safest contract. If in the bidding your find you have a better fit in a minor than a major, play in the minor, especially at a partial. You want to make whatever contract you bid. Plus 110 is only a bit worse than plus 140 and it may not even make any difference sometimes.

9. This also applies to game and slam bidding. If partner opens 1NT and you have a four-card major with at least invitational values, bid Stayman. Plus 620 and plus 630 are the same at IMPs.

10. Do not stretch to bid slams. Bid slams only when they have at least 75% probability of success.

11. Do not stretch to bid slams. Oh, is this a repeat? Well, good. The point needs extra emphasis.

12. You have partners at the other table. Don’t make

a risky bid or play because you think you are down in a match.

13. Once, in a seven-board match, we bid a slam down two vulnerable for minus 200, bid 3NT with a combined 21 high-card points after a bidding misunderstanding --- which my partner played well for down one and minus 100 --- and doubled them in 4*H*, making five for minus 990. We thought we were slaughtered. Wrong. We won IMPs on all three boards and blitzed the other team.

14. Don’t be a hero. Do not make a confusing bid that (1) may be passed when it is forcing or (2) shows extra values that you don’t have. Make the call that shows your strength.

15. “Take out insurance.” In every team game, there will be a hand where both sides can make game. Usually it is a wild hand with lots of distribution, doubles fits and long suits. It is usually right to bid one more (called “taking out insurance”) –

unless you are sure they are going down and you cannot make your bid.

16. On defense, strive at all costs to beat the contract when it means giving up an overtrick. You may take risks that you would never dream of at matchpoints – such as leading the king from K-x, hoping to find your partner with the ace of that suit or the queen and a quick entry in trumps. Sometimes you give up an overtrick, so you lose 1 IMP. If your bold play sets a contract just one time in 10, you are ahead.

17. If it’s hard for you, it’s hard for them. The player sitting in your seat at the other table is holding the same cards you are. This guiding principle will help you on several of the points already listed.

Steven Gaynor is an Emerald Life Master who lives in Minneapolis MN. He is a member of the national Charity and Goodwill committees.

The Past Comes AliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van

de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-Internet era B these periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before. WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

he was pulling the ♦8. The director was summoned to rule on the penalty card.

“If he meant to play the jack, nothing happens,” JoAnna said, “but if he meant to play the 8, the jack becomes a penalty card and the roof falls in.”

“I meant to play the 8,” said Lew honestly.“Score up the doubled contract,” remembered

JoAnna. “The experts at the table were floored.” Then to Lew she said, “I admire you so much. Nice guys don’t finish last – we went on to win the match.”

Stansby accepted the award in with a business-like call to action to the national bridge organizations: “It’s time to acknowledge that bridge is never going to be an Olympic sport. Except for drug testing and decisions of committees of bridge players being overturned by courts, I haven’t seen much progress.”

He also highlighted the ACBL’s relatively new Anti-Cheating Commission, whose job it is to review recorder forms and determine more serious cases, pursuit of which might make a better bridge experience.

“The problem is that they don’t get enough recorder forms.”

He urged players to follow through on their first intuition to file a recorder form rather than any second thoughts they may have about how much trouble it may be.

Stansby, a Hall of Famer, has won seven world championships including three Bermuda Bowl victories, and 37 North American Championships.

Grand National Teams: Championship and Flight A

2017 GNT Championship flight winners from District 21: David Grainger, Debbie Rosenberg, Chip Martel, JoAnna Stansby, Lew Stansby.

Last year’s GNT Flight A winners came from District 25: Barry Bragin, Weiling Zhao, Gary Miyashiro, Michael Hess, Susan Smith and Michael Smith.

The Grand National Teams is a North American contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating.

In 1985, the event was subdivided into three separate events: Flights A, B and C. Another change came in 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight (for players with more than 5000 masterpoints) was created. Effective 2014, Flight A changed from being capped at 5000 masterpoints to having an upper limit of 6000.

The winners of the Championship Flight are honored by the Morehead Trophy, donated by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge editor, Albert H. Morehead. The winners of Flight A are honored by the Goldman Trophy, named in honor of the late Bobby Goldman.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead

(1909–1966) was born in Flintstone GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. Ely Culbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstanding ability as a player and analyst and made him technical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was made general manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25 when he played on the Culbertson team that defeated the British in the second international match for the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The New York Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and a daily column from 1959. He resigned from the Times late in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing and publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses that made him one of the foremost American lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tremendous service to organized bridge. He was an officer of the United States Bridge Association when that organization amalgamated with the American Bridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairman of the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National Laws Commission and was in charge of production of the International Laws of Contract Bridge. He was also the author of the constitution of the World Bridge Federation — the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bobby GoldmanBobby

Goldman (1938–1999), who became a member of the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, enjoyed a stellar career as a player, author and theorist. His tournament record is impressive. He earned four world titles (the Bermuda Bowl in 1970, 1971 and 1979 and the World Mixed Teams in 1972) and 19 North American championships: the Life Master Men’s Pairs (1964); the Life Master Pairs (1968); the Open BAM Teams (1993); the Men’s Teams (1968, 1989 and 1991); the Spingold Knockout Teams (1969, 1978, 1983, 1986 and 1988); the Reisinger BAM Teams (1970, 1976 and 1980); the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1971, 1973, 1978, 1997 and 1998). Goldman also had 13 second-place finishes in NABC events.

At the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Goldman was an ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 25,700 masterpoints, and ranked

ninth on the all-time list of masterpoint holders. He was also a WBF World Grand Master.

Goldman authored several books on the game, including Aces Scientific and Winners and Losers at the Bridge Table. His contributions to bidding theory include Super Gerber, Exclusion Blackwood and Goldman after Stayman. He was one of the principal architects of the Aces Scientific System.

Goldman served as ACBL recorder from 1986–1988 and was a longtime member of the Competitions and Conventions Committee. His views on the game helped shape the modern-day Alert procedure, the ACBL convention chart, ethics and the appeals process.

Goldman was honored by the ACBL by being named the 1999 Honorary Member, presented for long and meritorious service to bridge.

Goldman’s early career was distinguished by his association with the now-famous Aces, the professional, Texas-based team created by businessman Ira Corn for the purpose of winning world bridge championships. Goldman was a member of the successful squad until 1974.

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Flight B winners are honored by the Sheinwold Trophy while the names of Flight C winners are honored by the Mac Nab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred

Sheinwold (1912–1997) was one of the greatest bridge writers in the history of the game. He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered by many to be the best. He had a knack for getting his point across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and know in an instant that nobody else could have written it,” said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He enlightened and entertained players through seven decades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge World from 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the author

of perhaps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of the appeals committees at NABCs and as chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac

Nab (1915–1985) served as a member of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to 1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a past president of the Western Conference, a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and a member of the executive council of the World Bridge Federation.

MonitoringACBL will be monitoring events at this and

future North American Bridge Championships with both visible and concealed real-time cameras in public spaces. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by ACBL management and tournament officials, among others, including members of the Anti-Cheating Commission. These recordings will also be uploaded to the internet following the NABC.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues or disputes arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table. This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Player Memos Player memos allow participants to file incident

reports alleging inappropriate behavior by other contestants. Two player memo stations have been set up outside the playing areas on the Marquis Level and the Atrium Level for your convenience. Players are encouraged to file Player Memos when appropriate.

Player Memos from the Spring 2018 NABC

ACBL National Recorder Robb Gordon reports that his office received 41 player memos at the 2018 Spring NABC in Philadelphia, substantially unchanged from the 39 received during the 2017 Fall NABC in San Diego. Of these, about one-third were conduct-related while the remainder were bridge- related and/or ethics-related. Online reporting was available, and almost half of the filers took advantage of that, with the rest filing paper reports. Online reporting more than doubled compared to San Diego because players are gradually becoming more comfortable reporting using the computers provided outside the playing areas. One of these reports regarding conduct (public accusation of cheating) was referred to the ACBL Disciplinary Committee. Unless confidentiality was requested, Gordon said that every filer and every subject was notified of the receipt and disposition of each report.

Winners of the 2017 von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs: Joel Wooldridge and John Hurd

The von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs is a six-session event with two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions. It is restricted to Life Masters. At stake is the von Zedtwitz Gold Cup.

In 1930, Waldemar von Zedtwitz donated the Gold Cup, which was presented to the winners of the Life Master Pairs. The first winners: von Zedtwitz and P. Hal Sims.

Waldemar von Zedtwitz (1896–1984), ACBL president emeritus, was president of the ACBL in 1948 and of its parent organization, the American Bridge League, in 1932. He was named Honorary Member by the ABL in 1931.

When dissension threatened to break up the ACBL in 1948, the contesting factions agreed to von Zedtwitz as president and chairman with carte blanche power. He is credited with saving the ACBL. In 1949, upon the League’s rehabilitation, he immediately returned his carte blanche power to the Board of Directors.

He helped found the World Bridge Federation and played a major role in the formation of the ACBL Charity Foundation.

As a player, von Zedtwitz was noted for his versatility in playing with exponents of different systems. He was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master (he was No. 4) when the category was created in 1936.

Von Zedtwitz won many national auction bridge championships and nearly all the contract bridge championships. He and Barbara Brier won the World Mixed Pairs in 1970 when von Zedtwitz was 74 and legally blind.

Life Master Pairs begins today

Daniel Bertrand and Allan Simon won the Bruce LM–6000 Life Master Pairs in 2017.

2017 Young 0–1500 Life Master Pairs winners Luen-Jyh (James) Luo and Tsao-Tung (Kevin) Tsai.

The David Bruce LM-6000 Pairs is open to players who have earned Life Master status and have won up to 6000 masterpoints. The upper limit changed in 2017; it was previously 5000.

The Sally Young 0-2500 Pairs is open to players

who have won up to 2500 masterpoints. Before 2017 the limit for this event was 1500 masterpoints.

The events are named in honor of two of ACBL’s all-time great players, both members of the ACBL Hall of Fame.

David Bruce (1900–1965) was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master; in fact, he was #1. A tremendously successful player in the early ’30s, he was known as a soothing partner but an unsettling opponent. Bruce played with Oswald Jacoby and Howard Schenken on the first of the outstanding

teams, the Four Horsemen, captained by P. Hal Sims.

In 1933 with Schenken, Jacoby and Dick Frey (joined shortly afterward by Michael Gottlieb), he organized the Four Aces. This team took the leadership in

competition and held it for the next decade.Sally Young (1906–1970) was Life Master #17

and the first woman to earn the rank. Young earned success in open and women’s events. She is the only woman to “three-peat” in the Reisinger. Young and teammates John Crawford, Charles Goren and Charles Solomon won in 1937 and 1938. They added B. Jay Becker to the squad in 1939 and won again.

Young also won the Reisinger in 1947 with teammates Jane Jaeger, Paula Ribner and Kay Rhodes. They remain the only all-women’s team to win a major open team event.

Mini-Life Master Pairs Begin Today

Use of the bidding box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Age requirement for Senior events

You must have been before January 1, 1959, to qualify to play in ACBL Senior events.

Stay in touchIs your email address on file? Is it up to date?

Let ACBL know. Call toll-free, 800–264–2743 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Central Time), or email [email protected].

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early!

In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which requires additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

at BridgeWinners.com. Entries must be purchased by 10 a.m. the day of the event EXCEPT for

events that require pre-registration, in which case the ACBL deadline, or the earlier of the two, applies.

A nice feature: You can buy entries in advance and be charged for the total number of sessions played after the event is over.

Stratification is based on averaging the masterpoints of a pair or team. Eligibility for limited events will be based on the point holding of the highest player, so no player with more than 3000 may play in B/C events nor the Bracketed B Teams, no player with more than 750 may play in Gold Rush events, and no player with more than 300 may play in 299er events.BOLD, UPPER CASE = NABC+ events. **International FundIn NABC+ events, $1.50 (per person, per session) of each entry fee will be allocated to the ACBL International Fund. These funds are used to underwrite part of the expenses of ACBL players who participate in international competition.

Convention card reminderEach player is

required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include

the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has

a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the

discretion of the director. If the director determines the partnership has at

least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.
