“Jake and Ben need bothmen’s period pieces and women’speriod pieces. They are in everyscene, and they have to do a lotof quick changes,” Sutter said.“You also need enough clothes(for the cast) to cover a period ofone month in the play.”

Calling herself “all woman,”Sutter finds herself teaching Goth-ier and Christensen how to findtheir “inner woman” and become“girlie girls” for their roles.

“Ben asked me, ‘How do youwalk in heels without clomping?’ Itell the two guys, to look moregraceful, you need to take smallersteps,” she said. “You need yourlegs close together and not takewide cowboy steps. When you sitdown in a dress, your knees needto be together and not spreadapart, like guys always want todo.”

While she plays and remains ina female role, Sutter said she andother characters must adjust tothe “gender confusion” going onall around them when Chris-tensen and Gothier take to thestage.

“I have to look and think differ-ently when the two guys are men,then men made into women,” Sut-ter said. “When they are women,we have more girl talk (amongus). When they are men, we havemore flirting and intimate mo-ments. It’s all about the mental,emotional and mannerisms. Ihave to play off it and think of thechanges. It makes for interestingacting.”

When it came to making theplay realistic, the cast conductedresearch, Sutter said. A line about“Doc Crippen” referred to Dr.Hawley Crippen, one of Britain’smost infamous murderers whowas hanged in London in 1910 forpoisoning and dismembering hiswife.

BASKING IN THE LIMELIGHTFor Gothier, “Leading Ladies”

represents a 180-degree turn fromsome of his past Lewis and Clarkroles.

“I was in ‘Deathtrap’ as a cold-blooded killer. I normally play thebad guys who are on the darkside,” he said. “But I was with Jakein a couple of shows like ‘Grease’.”

Gothier attended HartingtonPublic Schools and performedwith the Post Playhouse at FortRobinson State Park in northwestNebraska while attending Chadron(Neb.) State College. However,most of his theater experience hascome at LCTC.

“Theater is one of the greatestthings and one of the worstthings,” he said. “You can clickone night, and the next night it’snot quite there.”

Gothier looks forward to open-ing night for “Leading Ladies.”

“I hope we have the audiencelaughing until they cry,” he said.“It’s a very fun play, and I’m gladto be in it.”

Christensen and Sutter, bothYankton High School graduates,worked with Winter when he wasa YHS drama instructor. Now intheir 20s, Sutter and Christensenboth said they welcome thechance to work with Winter again.They note it’s a different experi-ence and relationship with Winteras adults rather than students.

Christensen, who attended Min-nesota State-Mankato, is perform-ing in his 12th LCTC show andsays he loves comedy.

“We have been working on thisfor about five weeks. But you don’tnotice because you are having somuch fun every night,” he said.“The comedy has so much to dowith the timing, to get it right.”

Sutter, a 2008 graduate of theUniversity of Sioux Falls, majoredin theater and communicationsstudies. She taught ballroom danc-ing in New Hampshire before re-turning to Yankton. She is workingwith the “Art of Healing” programfor Yankton Area Arts (YAA) butleaves in April for Minneapolis,where she will teach ballroomdancing full-time.

For now, she’s enjoying thechance to perform in “LeadingLadies” while in Yankton.

“I love over-the-top comedy,silly humor,” she explained. “I lovetheater and dance. In high school,our director, Amy Miner, said the-ater was ‘ephemeral’ because thefeeling comes and goes. You feedoff the audience.”

Christensen sees the currentproduction as a milestone.

“This is the last show of our50th season (at LCTC),” he said.“Being on the stage each night hitsyou hard. It’s a feeling that’s reallyhard to explain, like love.”

Winter believes the audiencewill enjoy the production.

“I hope the public gives thisshow a chance,” he said. “It’s avery fast-paced show. It’s notgoing to give the audience a lot oftime to nod off.”
