A Letter From Our Principal

Dear St. Mark’s Families,

Happy Holidays! Last night’s Christmas concert was so heart-warming and a

wonderful way to celebrate the advent season. Thank you to Mrs. Cooper for

continuing to amaze us with your creativity and for instilling the love of music in our

students. If you were able to attend you may have noticed how wonderful our sound

system sounded. Thanks to paddle up funds from the auction we were able to

purchase a new digital mixer and amplifier. A special thank you to our kindergarten

parent Tina Kasper who ran the system last evening.

Next week, our music and holiday festivities will continue. Our choir will be

performing at area nursing homes on Wednesday and the Bishop Kelly band will

perform for our students on Thursday morning at 9:30. Our students will participate

in the sacrament of reconciliation on Wednesday after returning from Mass. A

reminder that it will be a short week with a noon dismissal on Thursday, December

21st.

As you are driving around town or traveling for the holidays, I hope you are able to

hear our radio advertisements that will be played on several Cumulus Media stations

- Kboi-Am News Talk 670, Kizn-Fm Kissin 92, Kkgl-Fm 96.9 the Eagle, Kqfc-Fm the

miracle to our families. We hope that listeners will be sparked to consider St.

Mark’s for their children and we can promote catholic education to the masses.

As the end of the year draws near, I would like to take the opportunity to tell you

how blessed I feel to be a part of this incredible family. Your amazing children, your

endless generosity and your commitment to the school make being the principal of

St. Mark’s a great joy. I pray your family has a blessed Christmas and we all have a

safe, happy, fun-filled vacation.

A Letter From Our Pastor This Sunday marks the third Sunday of Advent and our final stretch of the journey to the manger. Are you

BK 2018 REGISTRATION—This year the application for new students will be entirely online. The 8th grade students will be given instructions on how to apply and how to select courses when they visit in January. Instructions will also be on our website. If you have families that struggle with technology, please have them contact us at Bishop Kelly. One big change for your parents is that they will need to upload a copy of their students first semester report card when they apply. Many of your parents are used to the school providing this. If possible, when you send those report cards this year, please tell parents that they will need to keep a copy of this to submit as part of their BK application.. Lastly, please help us to apprise your parents that we have had more interest for this incoming freshman class than ever before and are expecting a very large number of applications. To ensure acceptance at Bishop Kelly, it is advised that applications are submitted early. Important Dates:

Exciting New Catechesis Program at St. Mark’s School!

The kindergarten students at St. Mark’s School have the

opportunity to attend Catechesis of the Good Shepherd classes

to supplement their existing religion class. The Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd (CGS) classes began at St. Mark’s Parish two

years ago and St. Mark’s preschool students have been

attending these classes for the past two years, as well. The

opportunity has arisen for us to extend this program to our

kindergarten students as a supplement or enrichment to their

regular religion class. Because of the unique Montessori-like

approach to faith formation, the class takes place in a specially

prepared environment called the atrium. The kindergarten

students began attending the parish atrium in November and we

are in the process of preparing an onsite atrium at the

school. The atrium has materials (in many cases donated or

prepared by our parishioners) to help the children participate in

a hands-on experience of Church life. If you would like to help

make or prepare items for the atrium please contact Ginger

Mortensen at [email protected] or Katie Stroschein

at [email protected]. If you would like to donate to

this project, here is a wish list of items we will need for the atrium.

We are down to the final week of food collection for our Food Bank at St. Mark’s. Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far. We have collected 1026 pounds of food which means we need 474 pounds this last week to reach our 1500 pound goal! Please encourage your students to bring food this last week. If each student in school brought just 2 cans of food by Tuesday, we

would reach our goal! We can do it, St. Mark’s!!

NOTES FROM THE NURSE—

NOTES FROM THE COUNSELOR—The Christmas season can be

a very busy time. There are many things you can do to help keep your

Christmas a Christ-centered Christmas. One such thing is to think

about gifts. Not material gifts, but instead, focus on the gift of

kindness. Advent is a great time of year to have your family give the

gift of kindness. There are many, many ways to give the gift of

kindness and below are just a few of those ideas:

The gift of Kindness

Hold the door open for someone.

Do a chore for someone without them knowing.

Tell a joke.

Return someone’s cart at the store.

Leave a letter in a library book.

Feed the birds.

Leave happy notes around town.

Call your grandparents and ask them about their

childhood.

Pick up litter.

Let someone go ahead of you in line.

Compliment a friend.

Write a thank you note for your mail carrier.

Bake dessert for a neighbor

Walk dogs at the animal shelter.

Check in on an elderly neighbor.

Send a card to a service member.

Set the table for dinner.

Leave bubbles on someone’s doorstep.

Tell someone why they are special to you.

Donate outgrown clothes.

We hope you have fun doing some of these activities and

bringing cheer to others. Have a Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year!

The School Nurse's Christmas Card Listen dear teachers and you shall hear A verse from the nurse now that Christmas is near. Belly aches, headaches, popped wires on braces Hangnails and chapped lips and pimples on faces. Viruses causing GI distress Tears and upsets ‘cause “My life is a Mess!". Kids with green faces approaching my door Barely over the threshold...all over the floor. Tonsils that hurt, their throats are so sore Glands big as grapes—need I say more? Ear aches and heartaches, jammed thumb or finger Wheezes and sneezes and coughs that do linger. Allergic reactions, occasional lice Contusions and bruises from falls on the ice. "My Mom knows I'm sick, I've never felt worse.” She said “Go to school, and go to the nurse.” “I threw up on the bus, I felt like a jerk, But you can't call my Mom, ’cause she's gotta work". I love being your nurse, and I love all this stuff But by Christmas vacation, enough is enough! Enjoy your break, wipe the virus slate clear And we'll all start anew when we come back next year! I hope that my poem doesn't make you feel worse For it comes with my love Merry Christmas! Your School Nurses—Mrs. O’Sullivan and Mrs. Placido
