MAY IS BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and provides an opportunity to raise awareness about newborn hearing screening follow-up during the COVID-19 disruption in the health care system. Attending follow-up appointments may be difficult during the pandemic. However, early identification of hearing loss and early intervention are critical to language, social and educational development in children. Follow-up needs to be completed as soon as possible, while still being cautious and responsible in the current public health crisis. Goals endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention include: 1. Infants complete screening by one month of age; 2. Infants not passing the screening receive audiological evaluation by three months of age; 3. Infants with hearing loss receive intervention by six months of age. Assist parents to understand the importance of completing recommended follow-up once they are able to do so. For more information, please visit: https://health.mo.gov/living/ families/genetics/newbornhearing/. RETIREMENT OF SHEILA HAHS, RN-BSN FROM PERRY COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT Sheila Hahs, RN-BSN, will be retiring from Perry County Health Department June 2 after being a part of public health in Missouri for 36 years and a part of the Perry County Health Department for 31 years. She most recently has served as the Nursing Supervisor and Communicable Disease Nurse and will be dearly missed by all in public health throughout Missouri. In lieu of a large retirement party, due to COVID-19, we are asking anyone who worked with her to send a kind word or video to: [email protected] by close of business Thursday, May 28 to be shared with Sheila so she knows how much she was cherished and will be missed. Upcoming State Holiday #HEALTHIERMO Feeling exhausted, discouraged, and disheartened by the lack of understanding in your community about the value of public health? #HealthierMO recognizes your passion, your expertise, and your tireless work to respond to COVID-19. We are grateful for all you are doing every day to slow and stop the spread of the virus. We offer two new resources we hope will help. “Public health powers our community” offers you the opportunity to increase support for your agency by posting flyers in your windows and in supportive homes and businesses. “Community health starts here” explains how public health leads partnerships to assure thriving, healthy communities. A template version of the flyer can be shared with partner organizations and personalized with their role in your community health partnership. Example: “Schools: assuring children healthy foods and opportunities to be active in order to improve learning.” Social media content is also available.
