Last week, we read the Ten Commandments. In this week's
Torah reading, we turn to the far more detailed laws of
Mishpatim.
Wouldn't it be nice if life could be lived by a few general
principles?
But the fact is, it's not quite that simple. We need our basic
values; but we also need the details to make the general
principles real and part of our lives.
And what's different about the Ten Commandments is not
that they are of greater importance than all the rest - re-
member, there are 613! - but that they were given in the
most direct form of revelation, with all the people witness-
ing God's presence directly.
We all know people who say that it's enough just to be good
people. And we all know people who say the opposite, that
all that matters is adherence to the details, and that through
that adherence to God's will comes adherence to the big
principles.
But I think we need both. We need to understand the gen-
eral direction. And we also need to learn, and apply, the
specifics of Torah in our lives so that we can imbue them
with holiness in thought and in deed.
