WAGRAM — The Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County’s dedication of the McQueen Family Home was held on Tuesday, July 16, at 24740 Taft St. in Wagram. After the introduction of the McQueen family, Schnetta McQueen gave thanks to those who had a part in the home. “First, I want to thank God, because without him I would not be where I am today,” she said. “At one point I did not believe in myself, and just gave up. I thought I had no one to turn to — but then it was shown to me that there is a God. He helped me out of the dark places I was in and blessed me in many ways. “So now I know there is a God, and I give all my thanks to him,” she continued. “I would like to say thank you to Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency for accepting us into this wonderful housing pro-gram. Thank you Brittney, Chris and Mr. R.L. Locklear for all your hard work and dedica-tion. “I have truly enjoyed this life changing experience, and can’t wait to make new memories in our beautiful home,” she added. “Special thanks to my mother, father and son for being my strength and backbone through it all, I love y’all so much.”

Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County was estab-lished in 1992 — we are in the process of building our 49th house and will be starting construction on our 50th house next year. Raise the Roof is a fundraiser we started last year and was created to be an all day event starting with a 5k race, vendors, a kid zone and a day of music performers. Unfortunately, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael changed our plans. We postpone our event because we felt as though it was important to bring some fun into the community after the devastation from the two storms. With a great amount of support from our community we had a great day! This year we have decided to change things up a little bit to hopefully ensure that our event can happen rain or shine. This is the year for “A Night to Raise the Roof” with food, open bar, DJ, dancing, cash prizes and most importantly a chance for our com-munity to come together for a fun, relaxing night all while supporting our great cause. A Night to Raise the Roof will take place at Scotch Meadows Country Club on Sept. 14 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. We have extended Early Bird ticket prices to Aug. 28 and they can be purchased at our Habitat ReStore or at Harley’s Tuxedo on Main Street. Early Bird tickets are $125 per couple and $65 for singles. After Aug. 28, ticket prices will be $150 per couple and $80 per single. With the people’s support will be able continue our roof repair ministry and new con-struction on our 50th house in 2020. There are also partnership levels available. The Legacy Builders will be acknowledged on our custom built roof that will be displayed over the food table! Hope, Dream and Legacy Builders will have a reserved table and all levels will be on our banner which is hung at our di� erent events throughout the year and in our ReStore. Habitat for Humanity has a goal to help 100 victims over the next 12 months!

LAURINBURG — Habitat for Humanity of Scotland County has begun its application process to � nd the next three homeown-ers through its Homeownership Program. Application acceptance will run until Sept. 16.

Those interested in applying must meet four requirements to do so including be a Scotland County resident for at least six months or be employed full time in Scotland County for one year before the application; be within a certain income range or be living currently in substandard housing; have the ability to a� ord the monthly mortgage payment of $350 and to pay the approximately $2,700 in closing costs; along with a work-able credit history; and lastly, be willing to partner with Habitat with contributing 200 hours of “sweat equity” as a capital investment into the home. “Almost anyone you ask if they want to be a homeowner, they’ll answer yes,” said Executive Direc-tor Chris Carpenter. “It’s appealing to a lot of people to not only be a homeowner but to get their kids into a safer environment.” Carpenter said that the orga-nization keeps a shortlist of those who have been selected from the

application process for the homes. The list is kept short so people aren’t waiting longer than two years for a home since due to the

small size of the local organization only about two homes are com-pleted each year. However, one of those chosen during this application process will be living in a milestone home for Habitat. “We’re getting ready to start our 50th house in the spring of 2020,” Carpenter said. “It’s a milestone for us, we’ve been here 27 years and we’re a very small location with our funds to build the homes coming from the ReStore or dona-

tions from the community… So we’re proud to have created almost 50 homes because those living in them are paying taxes and are

involved in the community.” Applications can be picked up and dropped o� between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Habitat o� ce or when the o� ce is closed at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store both located on McColl Road. Roof repair long-term Disaster Relief Program

We are still taking applications and encourage homeowners with roof damage to contact us with questions they may have. They should not just assume they don’t qualify.

By the time this newsletter comes out we are scheduled to have com-pleted at least 74 projects totaling just over $260,000 since we started last December. We still have 48 projects to go with the money from the Governor’s relief budget and the Red Cross.

We should be over 100 by the end of the year.

50th home getting close to being started

The 50th house will be built during the Spring of 2020. We are excited to reach the milestone and we will have a campaign we call 50 for 50.

Our goal will be to raise $50,000 for our 50th house. We believe the com-munity will support this 50th house. We have been here for 27 years and done a lot of great work.

We will have 50 homeowners after this next house and the tax value of all those homes will be more than $3 million. Our homeowners contribute back to the community each year by paying taxes on their homes.

A Night to Raise the Roof event

This is an event we started this year to replace the Raise the Roof Festival from last year. We learned how hard it is to have outside events with the weather uncertainty.

Our committee came up with the idea to start an event indoors this year. I am attaching something the Elizabeth Spry(Our Store Manager and Head of the Committee) wrote about the event. I am also attaching a � yer with all the info for the event. You can use any of it you want. She wants to know if there is any way to write a story now and then highlight it again in this newsletter. The only thing that will be di� erent when the newsletter comes out from now is the prices of the tickets. The part to take out is highlighted in yellow in the thing she wrote that is attached. You can contact her for any info you need and any quotes you may want. She is going to be on WLNC Monday morning if you get a chance to have someone write a story now.
