Heart’s delight, Source of mercy, draw Your servant into Your arms:

I leap like a deer to stand in awe before You.

We welcome each of you who has come tonight to share in our celebration of Shabbat:

To share in the light of the candles and the songs and dances of rejoicing. To pray for peace and create harmony in our homes.

To rest and renew ourselves for the important work to come. To give thanks for health and freedom.

To seek faith and courage. To remember always our heritage.

Let us all bask in the Sabbath’s rays of comfort as we join with family and friends in this celebration.

and see a tree

standing there, that tree gives me a greater sense

of beauty and personal delight than all the vast forests I have

seen in Switzerland or Scandinavia. Because every tree here was

planted by us. It was nursed to life by the

water that we brought to it at such cost

and effort. Why does a mother love

her children? Because here again

they are her creation. Why

does the Jew have affinity for

Israel? Because here again

everything remains to be

accomplished. It is his

privilege and his place

to share in this creative

act. The trees at Sde

Boker speak to me in a

special way, in another

language than other

trees anywhere. Not only

because I helped to grow

them but because they

constitute a gift of man

to Nature, and a gift of

the Jews to the cradle

of their culture.

שמע SHEMAYou shall love your Eternal God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your being. Set these words, which I command you this day, upon your heart. Teach them faithfully to your children; speak of them in your home and on your way, when you lie down and when you rise up. Bind them as a sign upon your hand; let them be symbols before your eyes; inscribe them on the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.

Be mindful of all My Mitzvot, and do them; so shall you consecrate yourselves to your God. I am your Eternal God who led you out of Egypt to be your God; I am your Eternal God.

We have been rebuilding it daily for nearly two thousand years.

Israel is a land where time transcends space, where space is a dimension of time.

The land was rebuilt in time long before it was restored to space.

Despoiled and dispersed, abased and harassed, we knew we were not estranged forever.

It is not only memory, our past, that ties us to the land; it is our hope, our future.

What is so precious about Israel? What is the magnetic quality of its atmosphere?

The Land of Israel – biblical chapters hovering everywhere. Places, like Hebrew letters, waiting to be vocalized, waiting for crowns with which to be adorned.

Israel is a land sanctified by the words of the prophets, by the suffering of a whole people.

It has been made holy by the tears and prayers of thousands of years, by the labor and dedication of pioneers.

What is the meaning of the State of Israel? Its sheer being is the message.

What we have witnessed in our own days is a reminder of the power of God’s mysterious promise to Abraham and a testimony to the fact that the people kept its pledge,

“If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.”(adapted from Abraham Joshua Heschel)

THE RESTORATION OF ZION BEGAN ON THE DAY OF ITS DESTRUCTION.

כה נאדר כה באלם יי, מי כמ מי כמשה פלא. דש, נורא תהלת, ע בק

V’ne-e-mar: “Ki fa-dah Adonai et Ya-a-kov, u-g’a-lo mee-yad cha-zahk mi-meh-nu.” Ba-ruch a-ta Adonai, ga-al Yisrael.

Who is like You, O God, among the gods people worship? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, awesome in splendor, doing wonders? Your people acknowledged Your sovereign power: “This is my God!” they sang. “Adonai will reign forever and ever!” As You redeemed Israel and saved us from arms stronger than our own, so may You redeem all the oppressed and persecuted. Praised are You, Adonai, Redeemer of Israel.

HASHKIVENU השכיבנוGrant that we may lie down in peace, Eternal God, and raise us up, O Sovereign, to life renewed. Spread over us the shelter of Your peace; guide us with Your good counsel; and for Your name’s sake, be our Help.

Shield us from hatred and plague; keep us from war and famine and anguish; subdue our inclination to evil. O God, our Guardian and Helper, our gracious and merciful Sovereign, give us refuge in the shadow of Your wings. O guard our coming and our going, that now and always we have life and peace. We praise You, O God, whose shelter of peace is spread over us, over all Your people Israel, and over Jerusalem.

WILDPEACE

Yehuda Amichai

NOT THE PEACE OF A CEASE-FIRE NOT EVEN THE VISION OF THE WOLF AND THE LAMB,

BUT RATHER AS IN THE HEART WHEN THE EXCITEMENT IS OVER

AND YOU CAN TALK ONLY ABOUT A GREAT WEARINESS.

I KNOW THAT I KNOW HOW TO KILL, THAT MAKES ME AN ADULT.

AND MY SON PLAYS WITH A TOY GUN THAT KNOWS HOW TO OPEN AND CLOSE ITS EYES AND SAY MAMA.

A PEACE WITHOUT THE BIG NOISE OF BEATING SWORDS INTO PLOUGHSHARES,

WITHOUT WORDS, WITHOUT THE THUD OF THE HEAVY RUBBER STAMP: LET IT BE

LIGHT, FLOATING, LIKE LAZY WHITE FOAM.

A LITTLE REST FOR THE WOUNDS- WHO SPEAKS OF HEALING?

(AND THE HOWL OF THE ORPHANS IS PASSED FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT, AS IN A RELAY RACE:

THE BATON NEVER FALLS.)

LET IT COME LIKE WILDFLOWERS,

SUDDENLY, BECAUSE THE FIELD MUST HAVE IT: WILDPEACE.

ELI, ELI אלי, אלי

Hannah Szenesh

אלי, אלי, שלא יגמר לעולם:החול והים, רשרוש של המים,

ברק השמים, תפלת האדם.

Eli, eli, shelo yigamer l`olam: Hachol v’hayam, rishrush shel hamayim, B’rak hashamayim, t’filat ha’adam.

O Lord, my God, I pray that these things never end: the sand and the sea, the rush of the waters, The flash of the heavens, the prayer of the heart.

The mountain air is clear as wine And the scent of pines

Is carried on the breeze of twilight With the sound of bells. And in the slumber of

tree and stone Captured in her dream

The city that sits solitary And in its midst is a wall.

Jerusalem of gold And of copper, and of light

Behold I am a violin for all your songs. How the cisterns have dried The market-place is empty

And no one frequents the Temple Mount In the Old City.

And in the caves in the mountain Winds are howling

And no one descends to the Dead Sea By way of Jericho.Jerusalem of gold

And of copper, and of light Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

But as I come to sing to you today, And to adorn crowns to you

I'm the smallest of the youngest of your children

And of the last poetFor your name scorches the lips

Like the kiss of a seraph If I forget thee, Jerusalem,

Which is all goldJerusalem of gold

And of copper, and of light Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

We have returned to the cisterns To the market and to the market-place

A ram's horn calls out on the Temple Mount In the Old City.

And in the caves in the mountain Thousands of suns shine

We will once again descend to the Dead Sea By way of Jericho

Jerusalem of gold And of copper, and of light

Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

Once I sat on the steps by a gate at David’s Tower, I placed my two heavy baskets at my side. A group of tourists was standing around their guide and I became their target marker. “You see that man with the baskets? Just right of his head there’s an arch from the Roman period. Just right of his head.” “But he’s moving, he’s moving!” I said to myself: redemption will come only if their guide tells them, “You see that arch from the Roman period? It’s not important: but next to it, left and down a bit, there sits a man who’s bought fruit and vegetables for his family.” from “Tourists,” Yehuda Amichai

THERE ARE STARS יש כוכבים

Hannah Szenesh

There are stars up above, So far away we only see their light

Long, long after the star itself is gone. And so it is with the people that we loved. Their memories keep shining ever brightly,

Though their time with us is done. But the stars that light up the darkest night,

These are the lights that guide us. As we live our days These are the ways

We remember, we remember.

Baruch ata Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’ratza vanu, v’Shabbat kodsho b’ahava uvratzon hinchilanu, zikaron l’ma-asei v’reishit, ki hu yom t’chila l’mikra-ei kodesh, zeicher litziyat mitzrayim. Let us praise our Eternal God, Creator of the universe, who hallows our lives through the commandments. In love and favor, God has made Shabbat our heritage, as a reminder of the work of creation. It is first among our sacred days, a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt. O God, You have called upon us and have given us the day of Shabbat as a sacred inheritance. We thank you, O God, for Shabbat and its holiness.

Let the glory of God be extolled and God’s great name be hallowed in the world whose creation God willed. May God rule in our own day, in our own lives, and in the life of all Israel, and let us say: Amen. Let God’s great name be blessed forever and ever. Beyond all the praises, songs, and adorations that we can utter is the Holy One, the Blessed One, whom yet we glorify, honor, and exalt. And let us say: Amen. For us and for all Israel, may the blessing of peace and the promise of life come true, and let us say: Amen. May the One who causes peace to reign in the high heavens, cause peace to reign among us, all Israel, and all the world, and let us say: Amen.

FOR ALL THESE THINGS על כל אלה

Every bee that brings the honey needs a sting to be complete, and we all must learn to taste the bitter with the sweet. Keep, o God the fire burning through the night and through the day for the man who is returning from so far away.

Don’t uproot what has been planted so our bounty may increase let our dearest wish be granted: Bring us peace, o bring us peace. For the sake of all these things, God, let your mercy be complete. Bless the sting and bless the honey, bless the bitter and the sweet.

Save the houses that we live in, the small fences and the wall, from the sudden war-like thunder, may you save them all. Guard what little I’ve been given, guard the hill my child might climb. Let the fruit that’s yet to ripen Not be plucked before its time.

As the wind makes rustling night sounds and a star falls in its arc. All my dreams and my desires form crystal shapes out of the dark. Guard for me, o God, these treasures all my friends keep safe and strong. Guard the stillness, guard the weeping, And above all, guard this song.

I have been occupied for some time past with a work which is of immeasurable greatness. I cannot tell today whether I shall bring it to a close. It has the appearance of a gigantic dream. But for days and weeks it has filled me, saturated even my subconsciousness; it accompanies me wherever I go, broods above my ordinary daily converse, looks over my shoulder and at my petty, comical journalistic work, disturbs me, and intoxicates

me. What it will lead to it is impossible to surmise as yet. But my experience tells me that it is something marvelous, even as a dream, and that I should write it down – if not as a memorial for mankind, then for my own delight or meditation in later years. And perhaps for something between both these possibilities: for the enrichment of literature. If the romance does not become a fact, at least the fact can become a romance. Title: The Promised Land!

So long as still within the inmost heart a Jewish spirit sings, so long as the eye

looks eastward, gazing toward Zion, our hope is not lost – that hope of two

thousand years, to be a free people in our land, the land of Zion and Jerusalem.
