FESTIVAL 101 WELCOMEDear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 15th Austin City Limits Music Festival. As your Mayor for the next few days, I’d like to point out that you’re on my lawn. We call it Zilker Park, the crown jewel of Austin’s more than 250 beautiful parks, and I could not be happier that you are here to help write your chapter in the history of the Live Music Capital of the World.
ACL stages have seen giants – Bob Dylan, our own Willie Nelson, and this year, Radiohead – but you will experience the Austin City Limits Music Festival in your own way. Let me offer you some tips: Check out the artists playing on the smaller stages. You might be discovering the next big thing, or at least your new favorite band. (This is how a friend of mine discovered TV on the Radio a few years ago.) Also, I’m a dad, so hydrate. You will be immeasurably happier if you drink more water than anything else.
Enjoying live music is why I decided to stay in Austin after going to UT law school back in the 1970s, and it’s what drew you here this weekend. Treasuring old standbys such as Asleep at the Wheel (who are playing ACL this year) and fostering new talent is important to who we are as a city. Austin is a magical city, and music is part of our soul. Whether you live here or are leaving us after a few days, I hope you have a magical experience this weekend.
Don’t leave town without enjoying barbecue, breakfast tacos, and Barton Springs. The first two are self-explanatory. Barton Springs is a spring-fed pool at Zilker Park that’s so cold it’ll keep you chilled for hours. It’s where Robert Redford learned to swim when he was 5 years old, but more importantly, it’s our treasure, and we insist that you come enjoy it yourself.
So, enjoy music, drink water, eat breakfast tacos and jump into Barton Springs. Do that, and you’ve had the perfect Austin weekend.
Sincerely,
Steve Adler
Mayor, City of Austin
enjoy the showWelcome to the 2016 Austin City Limits Music Festival! Congratulations to C3 Presents on the 15th anniversary of the Festival. This year promises to celebrate with a stellar lineup of talent combined with great food, very cool merchandise, and a beautiful setting for one of the world’s leading festivals.
KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, is proud to be the home of the Austin City Limits television show, which began with episodes featuring Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel way back in 1974 and inspired this internationally acclaimed ACL Music Festival. Now ACL is carried nationally to a potential audience of over 100 million homes and is seen internationally in nearly two dozen countries.
2016 has been a big year for Austin City Limits - the television show is in its 42nd season of production and a documentary about the history of the longest running live music show in television premiered at SXSW. But that’s not all - we are also inducting our third class of artists into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame this month. On October 12th we will honor Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King and Kris Kristofferson with special performances by Willie Nelson, Mavis Staples, Gary Clark Jr, Billy Gibbons, Rodney Crowell, Taj Mahal and more!
The 42nd season of KLRU’s Austin City Limits promises memorable performances with a diverse lineup of artists representing a wide range of musical styles including (to name just a few) Ms. Lauryn Hill, Paul Simon, Robert Plant, Florence + the Machine, and Iggy Pop. The ACL TV studio audiences have seen incredible performances and you can too when you watch Austin City Limits on PBS. It all starts on October 1st with an hour-long performance by Paul Simon. (Check your local listings!)
Be sure and stop by the KLRU booth in the ACL Cares area to enter for a chance to attend an upcoming taping!
We’ve said it before -- Austin City Limits and the ACL Music Festival reflect the best of what makes Austin special. We thank the community, local businesses, and music lovers for embracing and remaining true to Austin City Limits for 42 years, and we thank C3 for another fantastic Festival year!
Have a great time!
Bill StotesberyCEO and General ManagerKLRU-TV
THANKS FOR THE SUPPORTOctober 7, 2016
On behalf of Austin Parks Foundation, I’m thrilled to welcome you to historic Zilker Park for the 15th Annual Austin Cit y Limits Music Festival!
For the last decade, APF has been the primar y beneficiar y of ACL Fest. Founded in 1992, APF is a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the qualit y of life for people in Austin by addressing the cit y's funding and resource gap needed to develop, maintain and enhance the area's 300+ parks, trails and green spaces.
You, the fans and attendees of ACL Fest, have generated over $20 million for Austin’s parks system, just by attending the festival. Last year alone, through a percentage of event revenues, fans contributed $3.6 million to Austin Parks Foundation and we put those funds to work in parks all across the cit y. We want to say a giant THANK YOU for all that you allow us to do to make Austin a healthier, greener and happier place to work and play.
Together, over the last 10 years, we’ve invested in parks across the cit y through large-scale strategic investments, such as: • $5 Million to transform Vic Mathias Auditorium Shores • $2 Million to restore Zilker Park’s lawn and care for the park’s hundreds of trees • $1 Million to renovate the birthplace of Austin, Republic Square Park • $150,000 to assist in the creation of the Boardwalk Trail at the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail
As a result of the funds received from last year’s event, we’re excited to announce that APF is committing $200,000 to help with a much-needed renovation of the Bathhouse at Barton Springs Pool.
In addition to these signature investments, APF has also been able to fund hundreds of communit y-initiated projects through our ACL Music Festival Grants Program. A few examples include: • $78,000 to build a state-of-the-art playscape at Dove Springs District Park • $47,000 to improve safet y and build a new visitor facilit y at Covert Park at Mount Bonnell • $16,000 to install erosion fencing, signage and benches at Red Bud Isle Park • $13,000 to furnish picnic tables, benches and a permanent ping pong table at Franklin Park
We work hard every day to invest in our parks to better serve Austin and the people who visit and call this great city home. We know this work would never be possible without you and without ACL Fest, so we want to sincerely THANK YOU for helping us fulfill our mission.
Enjoy your time at this year’s festival and we hope to see you back again next year. See you in the parks!
Colin Wallis
Executive Director
