Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you had a peaceful and restful holiday.

Thank you very much to those pupils that have come back to school in the appropriate uniform and with the correct equipment. This has meant that they have had an excellent start to the new academic year. Pupils spent the day with their form tutors on Wednesday and commenced normal lessons on Thursday. I have had the opportunity to meet and chat with some of the new Year 5 pupils and I have been impressed with their positive outlook and good manners. Pupils are as keen as ever to help staff and work with each other. This was evident during the set up for our whole school mass on Wednesday, when we had to get 700 chairs transported to the sports hall! They couldn’t help enough and we didn’t have a single moan during what ended up being a fairly lengthy Mass!

In the Mass, Father Tony talked about the quiet time that is needed on our lives in order to make sense of the world. As a school, we really value that time and I think that this is one of the things that sets us apart from other schools. We understand the power of praise, silence, benediction and mediation.

I’m teaching Year 6 Geography this year and I am looking forward to my first lesson this week. I have had to practice my cursive writing (or ‘joined up’ as I know it!). We have noticed that, when pupils join us from first school, they arrive with lovely handwriting. As we haven’t focused so much on that in the past, we have noticed a reduction in the quality of handwriting. So, with this in mind, we are encouraging all pupils, where appropriate, to write in cursive style in order to show the highest pride and presentation in their work and also to not waste the hard work done by our colleagues in the first schools.

School Fund

We will be asking for a donation from you to School Fund again this year. If you wish to donate, you

will find details on your ParentPay account.

The fund was started to help us to maintain and expand the wide range of curriculum enrichment

activities that parents, pupils, staff and Academy Reps are all rightly proud of at St Bede’s Catholic

Middle School. We feel that these opportunities help all of our children to develop both academic and

personal skills that they can go on to use in all curriculum areas. We know that they will motivate the

children to become lifelong learners.

In an ideal world, the funding that we receive from the government would be sufficient to enable us to

resource a wide ranging and creative enhancement to the National Curriculum. However, as you may

be aware, funding per pupil in Worcestershire is well below that of many other local education

authorities, and we are one of the least well-funded schools in Worcestershire.

We ask for Your help during this half term as we strive within our school community to be more compassionate and outward looking to all and especially to those who are most in need. Inspired by You, our good God and our loving Heavenly Father, may we seek to follow the example of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lived a life of love and service to all when He chose to live His human life amongst us. We thank You for Your Holy Spirit of Love, Lord. May He help us to grow to be the people You want us to be. Welcome back!

As we begin our new school year it is fitting that we ask the holy Patron Saint of our school Community, Saint Bede, to pray for us and help us in our school community as we start back to studying, teaching, praying, serving, learning and working together. Here is a prayer written by Saint Bede:

I implore you, good Jesus, that as in Your mercy you have given me to drink in with delight the words of Your knowledge, so of Your loving kindness You will also grant me one day to come to You, the fountain of all wisdom, and to stand for ever before Your face. Amen.

Also, as we belong to the family of schools within the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy, a wonderful way we can commit ourselves to this new school year is to ask Our Lady, Mary the Mother of Jesus and Our Lady of Lourdes to pray for us.

Here is a traditional prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes:

O Holy Virgin of Lourdes,

in the midst of your days of glory,

do not forget the sorrows of this earth.

Cast a merciful glance upon those who are suffering,

struggling against difficulties,

with their lips constantly pressed against life’s bitter cup.

Have pity on those who love each other and are separated.

Have pity on our rebellious hearts.

Welcome back from the PE department! Pupils that bring valuable items, such as phones and watches, to PE lessons do so at their own risk. The teacher in charge can look after items or they can be locked in the PE office, if necessary.
