WELCOME TO YR 7 BBQ On Thursday 3rd March, our Year 7 students and their families were given the opportunity to attend
the annual 'Welcome to Year 7' BBQ. The event was held in the beautiful surrounds of the
Aboriginal gardens and not only included a tasty BBQ, which was cooked and served by our
wonderful SRC students, but also included a friendly game of cricket on the hockey oval. The
afternoon event was attended by a large number of Year 7 teachers, parents and carers and SRC
students.
The Year 7 students and their families were offered a delicious piece of chocolate mud cake in
their honour. The cake was beautifully decorated in Canobolas colours and was proudly cut by
one of our Year 7 students, Rebekah Ryder. The 'Welcome to Year 7' BBQ allows students the
opportunity to introduce their family members to both teachers and other parents in a relaxed and
fun environment.
Mrs Nash, the Year 7 Year Adviser, was extremely pleased with the number of Year 7 students who
attended the BBQ with their families. The 'Welcome to Year 7' BBQ was a wonderful success
and we look forward to welcoming parents and carers of Year 7 into our school for other events in
the near future.
From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
Welcome to Week 6. Next week we will formally welcome our Japanese exchange students and
their teachers to our school. Fifteen students and two staff will travel from Toyo Ushiku school in
Japan to our school as part of the annual sister school exchange program between both of our
schools. Our guests will be visiting a number of classes and participating in activities such as
Ceramics, Cooking, Art and Music. I would like to thank our families who have volunteered to host
our guests for their two week stay. I am sure our guests will have the time of their lives and I am
looking forward to spending some time with them next week.
Academically Talented Program
Over the coming weeks, families of students in local primary schools will receive application forms
for our Academically Talented classes for 2017. This is an exciting opportunity for our academically
talented students and we are committed to ensuring that we continue to offer programs for all of
our students to develop and grow them academically, socially, culturally and emotionally.
Information is available on our school website.
Year 11 Parent Teacher Information Evening
On Thursday 3rd March we held a parent information evening for current Year 11 students. Our
students were introduced to the requirements of their preliminary certificate. Thank you to those
parents and students who attended for your feedback and support.
Welcome to Year 7 BBQ
Thank you to the parents, students, staff and family members who attended the Year 7 welcome
BBQ on Thursday evening. Supporting the transition to high school is key for our team and I
encourage you to continue the open lines of communication between yourself and our school if
you need anything at all.
For the next five weeks I will be out of the school working in a different role within the Department
of Education. During this time, Ms Kate Wootten and Mr Stuart Riles will be relieving as Principal.
Please feel free to contact them on 6362 1677 if you have any questions or queries.
I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you all in Term 2.
With my warmest regards
Chad Bliss
Principal
CANOBOLAS BIG PICTURE BIG PICTURE LAUNCH
OH, what a night!
A very successful night was had by all who attended the Big Picture launch on Wednesday 18 th Feb in the
Health Building at Canobolas High. Students, teachers, parents and carers were blown away by the
support from the community in regards to their interest in the new Big Picture Education program and its
philosophy on re-engaging students via their passions and interests in their education.
On arrival attendees were welcomed at the school gates by Big Picture students who politely directed
them to the Health building where Kyle Fardell provided some background music, setting up a wonderful
relaxed atmosphere for others to chat to potential mentors in their prospective interest areas.
Thank you to our Principal, Mr Bliss for a very reflective welcome and to Erin Dalzell for the
acknowledgement of country. Viv White, the CEO of Big Picture was once again a special guest as her
knowledge and experience was invaluable towards outlining the expectations of the whole Learning
through Internship (LTI) process and the requirements of the mentor program.
After a couple of insightful speeches from Advisory mentors Mrs Rose and Miss Penberthy, and some VERY
inspirational speeches from Destinee, Emily P and Jack about their Big Picture journey so far, students
offered a selection of sweet treats, savoury quiches and light refreshments to the attendees who then
engaged in conversation with the staff, students, parents and carers and members of the community
about the Big Picture program.
Destinee had a very informative chat to JJ from PhysX and is currently setting up an Informational
Interview; Emily W had a very enthusiastic chat with Karen from Courallie Child Care centre and is now
keen to embark on a Shadow day this Friday; many students spoke with Ben Morris from Future moves at
CSU and are keen to go on a ‘My day, My way’ excursion to Bathurst for the whole University experience;
Emily P had an awesome interview with Sonya, the nurse facilitator at the Orange Base Hospital this week
and is now anxiously waiting clarification for her Shadow day; Jack finally met his potential mentor from
Precision Metal Fabrications at the launch and is looking forward to a Shadow day this term; Dyson met
with Tristan from SNAP fitness; Amelia and Erin have already set up an Informational Interview with Belinda
Bostock, the School Police Liaison Officer and are very excited about what she has planned for them;
Blake has a keen interest in Sign writing and thanks to Ms Wootten and her contacts, has been able to set
up an interview with Pete Golland and help with projects around the school, currently STEM centre
signage.
Overall many contacts were made within the community with potential mentors and a big thank you
goes (once again) to all parents/guardians and carers of the students enrolled in the Big Picture
Education program. We look forward to sharing many more exciting journeys with you all in the future.
A very special thank you to Mike and Geraldine from the Sally Foundation for their invaluable support and
to Vince for his tireless efforts in regards to our media exposure and contacts.
SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS ENERGY IN A BISCUIT
Year 8 was investigating the energy content of food and modelling the way our
bodies ‘burn’ kilojoules. The heat energy released was used to heat up water in a test
tube in a similar way to how our body uses our energy to warm our blood.
New chicks on the block…
Year 12 Biology has hatched some jumbo
quail. It was only 18 days ago that the
class named the eggs and gently placed
them inside the incubator. There were
proud parents all around as they were
reunited. Meanwhile we have studied
inheritance, genetics and cell division,
mitosis and meiosis.
FOSSILS AND EVOLUTION
Year 10 have been looking at how fossils are made, and getting up very close & personal in
the process.
AGRICULTURE NEWS Year 7 Students in the Aria and Quay class have all been issued with
their Term 1 assessment task – Design a Chicken Coop. Although the
assessment is not due until end of Week 8. Three students have
already completed their assessment and have bought in their
designs.
Justice Underhill of 7 Aria handed her fabulous chicken coop model
in last week all constructed of recycled materials. Joshua Whiley also
of 7 Aria has handed in his assessment early. Joshua has constructed
his from ply wood and chicken wire that he had at home.
While another student of 7 Quay was the first in his class to hand in his
marvelous chicken coop model also constructed from recycled
materials.
All three students have put a lot of thought and consideration into
placement of feeders, water, nesting boxes and protection from
predators. I look forward to seeing more chicken coop models rolling
in over the next few weeks.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 8 STEM – Biodomes
8STEM classes have been learning about the use of biodomes to grow food for eating in places
where that particular food may not normally grow. Students used the makerspace to prototype
a self-watering plant starter from used PET water bottles normally headed for the bin. It uses a
wick to draw water from its reservoir and keep the seed raising mixture damp enough for the
seeds to grow. This process will help us understand how plants can grow in a biodome. The first
seeds broke through in two days!
Students also used computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) to
label their prototypes with name stickers.
Mr Scott
Head Teacher STEM
On display in the STEM are some books that received a Prime Minister’s Literary award.
Come and check them out.
Made in Orange The Life and Times of an
Extraordinary Factory is also on display.
This is the story of a manufacturing plant
that began as an armaments factory
during World War II. It then made
household appliances for a rapidly
expanding nation. Over eight decades
the factory continually confronted and
rebuffed economic changes before
succumbing to the progress of
globalisation. This year marks the
decommissioning of the Electrolux
factory and this book showcases its
amazing history and provides a
snapshot into Orange’s manufacturing
industry. Many students from our school
would more than likely have generations
of family members who worked at this
factory. So come and have a browse
through this book, you never know you
might see a familiar face!
EBOOK CATALOGUE
We have recently purchased titles for our new
ebook catalogue. Year 7 classes will be informed
about our new ebook platform over the next few
weeks. If you would like to know more, see Mrs
Richard in the STEM centre.
CREATIVE ARTS NEWS In the Creative and Performing Arts classrooms young artists and musicians are hard at work

Congratulations to all the students who are continuing to display a
high level of effort in practical lessons despite the recent high
temperatures. The PDHPE teachers make every effort to maximise
the students time in the shade and participate in activities that are
suitable for the hotter weather. Many of our teachers spend most of
the day in the heat working with our students and supporting them
during difficult conditions.
It is an expectation that all students participate in practical lessons
and follow all instructions given by their teacher. Medical reasons for
exclusion from a sport or PDHPE lesson are only possible with a
medical certificate signed by a doctor accompanied by a letter
from the parent.
A reminder that it is a good idea to bring along a hat and ensure
that your child has a drink bottle to use each day.

PDHPE Assessment Reminders
Many of the PDHPE classes across the years are currently working on assessable items both in class and at home. I
reminder that if your child does not complete an assessment task and hand it on time for marking it will affect the overall
grade they are awarded for PDHPE. This grade also has a practical effort, attitude and participation mark for lessons
where students participate in practical games, sports and various physical activities. Please note that this component of
the course is compulsory and students may only be excused from these classes with a medical note during the time of
injury recovery.

Girri Girri News
The Girri Girri girls group were fortunate enough to be
able to participate in an aboriginal art workshop, that
was lead by Hayden Gibbs. The workshop allowed
the girls to not only learn about particular painting
techniques, but also about traditional symbols and the
stories that accompany paintings. Over the next two
weeks the students will be painting their own artworks,
which will be displayed around the school.
Rep Shorts and Socks!!!
School sport representative shorts $40 and socks $10 are available for purchase for through the

CHPA students in sync with each
other in their training.
The Canobolas Rural Technology High School will showcase two of its outstanding
initiatives at this conference. These include our STEM and CHPA programs of which
we are so very proud.
Conference synopsis: To address the changing educational needs of students and
increase engagement, The Canobolas Rural Technology High School, has two
innovative projects to share.
Project 1 – Canobolas High Performance Athletes (CHPA) program. CHPA students are supported by industry professionals and a school based management team. Local industry representatives work with students in the area of Strength and Conditioning, Exercise and Sport Science, Physiotherapy, Pilates, Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Media Skills and Sports Coaching. Students learn: specific time management and organisational skills; participate in ongoing individual strength, speed,
flexibility, power and aerobic endurance programs; access state of the art exercise testing and training equipment in a university exercise physiology laboratory setting; further develop technical and tactical skills within their chosen sport; and experience elite sporting environments and events
Project 2 – STEM centre and Stage 4 STEM curriculum. Following recent STEM trials in the school, The Canobolas Rural Technology High School is embedding an integrated project based STEM curriculum for all students in Stage 4 and establishing a STEM Centre. The STEM Centre encourages Students Thinking Exploring and Making and has two unique learning areas – the Thinkerspace and Makerspace – for lesson delivery. The units of learning feature technology maker projects as the vehicle for Scientific and Mathematical thinking. STEM extends the learning of their most talented students while at the same time reengaging those who ask, “Why do I even need to learn this anyway?” The units are designed to mesh with the Science Scope and Sequence to enhance learning.
The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a
Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The
survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known
to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide
survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/
information-for-parents
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and
quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and
the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world
have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify
individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take
less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14
March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the
survey is being sent home with students over the next week. If you do not want your child or
children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Monday 14th March. The
FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from
the website above.

IMPORTANT — UPDATED STUDENT MEDICAL INFORMATION REQUIRED
A reminder to parents to notify the school about your child’s health
We welcome information from parents about your child's health, even if you are not requesting specific
support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also im-
portant that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition devel-
ops.
Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care re-
lated issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be pro-
vided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal and if relevant
please provide updated health care plans (eg. Emergency Response Plan, ASCIA Action Plan for Ana-
phylaxis, Asthma Action Plan or Individual Health Care Plan). This will greatly assist our school in planning
to support your child’s health and wellbeing.
Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the
contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts.
We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school
will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health
needs or as otherwise required by law.
SCHOOL NOTICES
UNIFORM
If you have any uniform items at home that no longer fit your child, please consider donating
them to the school. Please drop them off at the Front office. Also please remember to clearly
label all items of your child’s school uniform.
ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL
You may be aware that from January 2010 the NSW Government legislated an increase in the
school leaving age for students from 15 years to 17 years. This means that if your child is not 17
and is not in full time work or other tertiary study, they MUST attend school. Our school will be
working closely with Mr Lyndon Marriott (Careers Adviser) and our Deputy Principals to ensure
that we are able to cater for the needs of all students.
The Government and the Department of Education and Communities have also recently
reviewed a number of child protection initiatives. Attendance at school was one of these. If
your child is absent for any reason, it is essential that you contact the school and provide
notification of the child’s absence in writing on the first day your child returns. Our school will
take very seriously unexplained absences. If students are genuinely ill or have some other
genuine reason for not being able to attend school, then the school will support you at all
times. However, it is the parents/caregivers responsibility to ensure that their children attend
school everyday.
