Friday 24 May 2019 Dear Families What an intense half term the five weeks from Easter to the Bank Holiday are. Year 11 and Year 13 students are finally thrust into the frenzy of the exam season as staff and students alike try to cram that last lile bit of knowledge into their heads before the big exams. We are now two weeks into the three week cycle with a week to go after half term. There is still lots of revision to do and we wish all of our students well with the terminal exams. Of course for all the other students end of year exams will start after Half Term. Resources for these exams will be available on Show My Homework. Even in these five weeks though a lot of wonderful activities have been going on. Our Year 9 students have been choosing their options for next year and we have welcomed in our new Year 7. We continue to be significantly oversubscribed and one of the most popular schools in Lambeth. We have hosted the Herne Hill Film Festival for a showing of ‘Chasing Coral’ and we also hosted the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge where Michael and Tiarna in Year 10 represented the school in the most fantastic manner. Elia in Year 9 continued her excellent progress in Basketball and took part in a NBA Europe Elite Camp in Italy and there were a number of sporting fixtures although the result of the now traditional staff vs Year 11 football match is best glossed over. We have also started our new DofE Year 9 cohort who have been very lucky with the weather so far. We were also very pleased to have visits from two big names. Aaron Wan Bissaka, one of the most highly rated young footballers in Europe popped in to speak to our students and was an excellent role model as somebody who clearly believes in giving back to his South London community. We also had a visit from another South Londoner Sadiq Khan who visited our Football Beyond Borders students as part of a focus on funding for youth projects in London. It was an amazing day as our young people spoke to him and Helen Hayes MP about projects they had been working on before joining him for some training on the pitch. He gave very generously of his time and our young people had an unforgeable experience. Thank you also to Bruk and Hari from Football Beyond Borders whose work continues to be an inspiration. Having met him several times before when I was the Deputy Head at a school in his constituency when he was an MP I was struck by the intense levels of security that he has to have compared with four or five years ago. In a city that is rightly known for its inclusivity and tolerance it is sad that this is necessary. The Elmgreen message through the Elmgreen Way of tolerance, kindness and community will always be stronger than prejudice and hate. A final message before the final half term about uniform please. On the whole it is excellent but can I remind you about the rules around piercings. Facial piercings are not permied and hair colour should be natural as should nails. Can we please ensure that all students are adhering to this as we go into June. Have a lovely break. Dominic Bergin Headteacher

Dear Families

What an intense half term the five weeks from Easter to the Bank Holiday are. Year 11 and

Year 13 students are finally thrust into the frenzy of the exam season as staff and students alike

try to cram that last little bit of knowledge into their heads before the big exams. We are now

two weeks into the three week cycle with a week to go after half term. There is still lots of

revision to do and we wish all of our students well with the terminal exams. Of course for all the other students end of

year exams will start after Half Term. Resources for these exams will be available on Show My Homework.

Even in these five weeks though a lot of wonderful activities have been going on. Our Year 9 students have been

choosing their options for next year and we have welcomed in our new Year 7. We continue to be significantly

oversubscribed and one of the most popular schools in Lambeth. We have hosted the Herne Hill Film Festival for a

showing of ‘Chasing Coral’ and we also hosted the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge where Michael and Tiarna in Year

10 represented the school in the most fantastic manner. Elia in Year 9 continued her excellent progress in Basketball and

took part in a NBA Europe Elite Camp in Italy and there were a number of sporting fixtures although the result of the

now traditional staff vs Year 11 football match is best glossed over. We have also started our new DofE Year 9 cohort

who have been very lucky with the weather so far.

We were also very pleased to have visits from two big names. Aaron Wan Bissaka, one of the most highly rated young

footballers in Europe popped in to speak to our students and was an excellent role model as somebody who clearly

believes in giving back to his South London community.

We also had a visit from another South Londoner Sadiq Khan who visited our Football Beyond Borders students as part

of a focus on funding for youth projects in London. It was an amazing day as our young people spoke to him and Helen

Hayes MP about projects they had been working on before joining him for some training on the pitch. He gave very

generously of his time and our young people had an unforgettable experience. Thank you also to Bruk and Hari from

Football Beyond Borders whose work continues to be an inspiration.

Having met him several times before when I was the Deputy Head at a school in his constituency when he was an MP I

was struck by the intense levels of security that he has to have compared with four or five years ago. In a city that is

rightly known for its inclusivity and tolerance it is sad that this is necessary. The Elmgreen message through the

Elmgreen Way of tolerance, kindness and community will always be stronger than prejudice and hate.

A final message before the final half term about uniform please. On the whole it is excellent but can I remind you about

the rules around piercings. Facial piercings are not permitted and hair colour should be natural as should nails. Can we

please ensure that all students are adhering to this as we go into June. Have a lovely break.

Countdown to Work Experience

In 8 weeks’ time all Year 10 students will be undertaking a work experience placement

during the week commencing 15 – 19 July 2019.

There are a number of benefits to students participating in this opportunity, including:

• increasing their awareness of their own skills and strengths

• helping them to understand how the subjects they study in school link to certain jobs

• giving an insight into what the world of work is really like and employers' expectations

• increasing their motivation to do well in school

If your child has not yet secured a placement, the half term break is an ideal time to support

them with their search.

How can I support my child?

* Ask friends or family if they aware of any opportunities

* pass on any contacts who could help your child

* rehearse telephone calls they may need to make to an employer

* proof-read emails they send to employers

* think about the location of a placement and how they will get there

All the employer needs to do if they are willing to accept your child on a placement is to

complete the Employer Completion Form which is available on Show My Homework.

These forms need to be returned to me- [email protected]
