Science Week at Teddington School

It was Science Week this week. A wide range of activities took place at lunchtime and after school,

culminating in the Solar Eclipse on Friday.

Year 8s Bottled Gardens

As part of Science Week, Year 8s have been growing selected plants for the past 3 weeks following inspiration from a newspaper article about closed bottle gardens. The students will keep fortnightly journals to tell the story of their bottle gardens to explain exactly how the system works. Ms T Banda

Electric Shock

Experiments with electricity prove to be ‘positively shocking’. Thanks to Mr Rayne for providing some bright sparks!

Bush Tucker Trials

There was no shortage of eager volunteers to sample the worms, beetles, scorpions and other insects available as part of Teddington School’s annual Bush Tucker Trial. Yum!!

Year 8 Rainbow Jars

Our students created some rainbow jars out of a mixture of chemicals and household products. It was great fun!

Science Assemblies

As part of Science Week, this week’s assemblies were centred on motivating and intriguing our students. Many experiments took place and some of them surprised our pupils to the point of making them jump. Exciting!

Medics in the classroom

On Thursday, a group of trainee doctors visited the school and took the time to explain some medical procedures and techniques to our Year 10 and Year 11 classes.

Partial Solar Eclipse

Science Week has been fantastic this week , thanks to everyone involved. It was nice of the universe to align and give us a rare solar eclipse Friday morning to bring the week to a close. The weather forecast was not good, but there were still the effects of the eclipse (darkening and cooling) and a small chance of seeing it. Most of our Science classes went to the Rec in the morning and shared the experience outside. All other classes (except those doing examinations of course) were able to click on the given link at 9.25 am and watch it with the rest of their class. The sky gradually darkened in the classrooms and the temperature cooled down.

Science Week Reports

This week is Science Week. As part of this we have taken part in many science-related activities that have enhanced our understanding of science, and helped us see the fun side of science too! Throughout the week, we have been surprised by the variety of experiments and activities provided by the school, and we were even gifted with the total solar eclipse to top off this fantastic week! The week began with an ‘I’m a Celebrity get me out of here’ style bug-eating challenge, namely a bushtucker trial. The event was a huge success and saw the classroom in which it took place get filled to the brim to the point where a second classroom was required to fit in all the eager participants! Another big event that occurred during science week was the medics (trainee doctors) coming into classrooms to do a workshop style lesson, improving many pupils understanding of biology. This was a great experience as we got the chance to look at lot of the equipment used in hospitals all around Europe. Even the usual weekly-assembly was re-invented with a science theme, and we got the chance to observe lots of interesting aspects of science within 15 minutes. Donated kindly by NPL, the school received a sample of liquid nitrogen which was used in the assembly- and we had the opportunity to see it in action as it froze anything placed inside. The assembly led on for us to see hydrogen filled balloons used to create some impressive explosions. Finally, to bring the eventful week to a close, we had the once in a lifetime opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse. Pupils were able to observe the eclipse happen in real-time; some watched live footage in the classrooms while others ventured outside to see the event. By Russell Andrew, 9AW and Louis Paterson, 9AY

Science week was from Sunday 15 to Friday 20 March . It was a week of amazing scientific opportunities at lunchtimes and in lessons, we experienced educational, fun and hands on scientific activities. The week started with an inspiring assembly by Dr Hui about exploring science, and was followed by many activities. The activities ranged from incredible explosions to class medics visiting and teaching us about medicine. Other activities included various interesting chemistry experiments, electricity and crime science. My personal favourite activity was the visit from the class medics. Two junior doctors came in and demonstrated some of their equipment. This ranged form a machine that would let you see your internal organs, a keyhole surgery simulator, a device to take photos of the back of your eyes, a heart rate monitor and other cool stuff. It consolidated my ideas about studying science in the future. There was also a visit from a surgeon who talked to us about being a surgeon. It was an interesting talk and I learnt a lot about what a surgeon does in his job. To add to this already great week there was a funny bug eating contest. The week ended almost perfectly with us watching the once in a lifetime opportunity of viewing the solar eclipse. It was a week to be remembered. Year 11 Calshot Revision Weekend

With the GCSE examinations approaching rapidly, our teachers and students are joining forces to

make sure everybody is reaching their potential. Last weekend, a group of Year 11s and a few

supportive teachers went to Calshot for a Maths and English Intervention Weekend. Providing fun and

mostly revisions, this opportunity was highly successful and our students are more motivated than

ever. Our pupils also learnt about exams techniques and revision resources; creating various cards

and help sheets which will be very useful come the exams.
