Trainer John Moore is pleased with the condition of the former Australian-raced Group One placegetter Beauty Generation

(Road To Rock) ahead of the Hong Kong Classic Mile (HK Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The four-year-old raced as Montaigne for Anthony Cummings and finished second in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) and fourth in The BMW (registered as the H E Tancred Stakes) (Gr 1, 2400m) at his last two starts in Australia.

The gelding finished second on his Hong Kong debut before registering his first success over 1600 metres at Sha Tin on 8 January, looming up for Zac Purton at the top of the straight before digging deep to fend off the late

BEAUTY GENERATION PLEASES MOORE Field Of 14 Declared For Hong Kong Classic Mile

challenge of California Disegno (Fastnet Rock) (formerly Disegno) by a head.

Following his latest piece of work, where he covered 800 metres in 54.80 seconds under Zac Purton yesterday morning, Moore declared himself thrilled with Beauty Generation’s progress.

“It’s going to be a great race, no doubt, but the way Beauty Generation came off the track this morning – and I had a good look at him in the light – he’s just a different horse,” Moore said.

“He’s trimmed right up. He hasn’t lost weight, but just physically, he’s wow. That’s the only way I can describe him.”

Moore is set to be represented by seven runners in the HK$10,000,000 feature at Sha Tin this weekend, with his Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) (formerly Street Rapper) the top-rated runner in the field, but Moore feels Beauty Generation can play a leading role.

“Zac came back and said he’s jumping out of his skin. He’s never been on him (in Hong Kong) when he’s felt this well,” Moore said.

“He’s going to give Rapper Dragon a run for his money, and Rapper Dragon will have to be near his best to beat him. He looked like a horse that’s going to run a very big race on the weekend.”

Moore added that Beauty Generation, who was drawn in barrier five for the local Group One, had needed both of his runs so far this preparation and was just coming to his peak.

“The way he has come to the corner both times this preparation, you would have thought he was going to win by two or three lengths, but he then died on his run both times, but that was to be expected,” he said.

“I had a real query on him the last 50 metres last time in particular, and he still won. But that’s why I had to run him last time. He’s come on leaps and bounds for that. Just look at him this morning.”

However, Zac Purton sounded a note of caution, revealing to the South China Morning Post yesterday that the gelding suffered a minor injury to his heel when he was galloped on during his last start.

"It was only a minor injury he had, but John just wanted to be sure that the horse was stretching out properly and he feels fine to me," Purton said.

Purton feels that slight setback will not prevent him winning this weekend, but that he feels he will be seen at his best when he gets a stiffer test of stamina.

"It won't stop him winning if everything goes right on Sunday, but really only racing is going to get him properly fit and that's what I'm keen to see,” he said.

"His form in Australia probably suggests that he'll be better over 2000 metres and maybe that's when we'll see the best of him, but he handled the mile well the other day.”

Rapper Dragon, who also finished placed in Group One company when raced in Australia as Street Rapper, has drawn barrier eight for Joao Moreira, while another Moore-trained Australian-import Eagle Way (More Than Ready), the winner of the last season’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), has drawn barrier six for Tommy Berry.

Both runners will have their final hit-out ahead of the Hong Kong Classic Mile, which signals the start of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, this morning.

“Rapper Dragon will be out (this morning). He galloped on Tuesday

for Joao Moreira and there’s just one more for him on the dirt, he’ll just go three-quarter pace through the motions,” Moore said.

“Eagle Way was out on the turf on Monday morning, he’ll just do three-quarter pace tomorrow as well.”

Moore’s other four runners, Group One-winning French import Helene Charisma (Air Chief Marshal) (formerly Mont Ormel), Group Two-winning Australian-bred Let Us Win (Sebring) (formerly Hattori Hanzo), Queensland Derby runner-up Rodrico (High Chaparral) and People’s Knight (Exceed And Excel) have drawn barriers four, one, 14 and 11 respectively.

Also set to tackle the Hong Kong Classic Mile is Pakistan Star (Shamardal), who returned to winning ways in the Griffin Trophy (1400m) at his last start and has drawn barrier nine for Silvestre de Sousa, and trainer Tony Cruz feels he is in good form.

“Pakistan Star’s in good condition, everything is where I want it to be with him,” Cruz said.

“It was good to get that win into him last time. We’ll gallop him (yesterday morning) and that should put him spot on for the Classic Mile.”

Tony Cruz will saddle three further runners; Italian Group Two-winner Super Chic (Strategic Prince) (formerly Saent), Australian import Winner’s Way (Starcraft) (formerly Day Of Rest) and former New Zealand Group Two winner Circuit Hassler (Shocking) (formerly The Hassler).

The field is completed by the John Size-trained Western Express (Encosta De Lago) (formerly Cardless Cash), who will be ridden by Ryan Moore from barrier seven, Seasons Bloom (Captain Sonador) (formerly Le Capitaine), and Baba Mama (Per Incanto).

The second leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series is the Hong Kong Classic Cup (HK Gr 1, 1800m), which will be run on 19 February, before the finale in the Hong Kong Derby (HK Gr 1, 2000m) on 19 March.

Australia

Two For SquamosaThe Sun Stud-based stallion Squamosa (Not A Single Doubt) sired his first Australian winner and second overall when the Barry Campbell-trained filly Derasa (2 f ex Jesting by Commands) ran out an easy winner over 1100 metres at Launceston on Wednesday. The two-year-old, who ran third on debut at Launceston on 9 November, beat Il Regalo (Needs Further) by three quarters of a length with just a nose back to Pateena Arena (Needs Further) in third. Derasa was purchased for $39,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale by Star Thoroughbreds / Paul Willetts from the Fairways Bloodstock draft. The stakes-placed filly Kiwi Ida provided Squamosa with his first winner when successful on her debut at Riccarton in October.

Blinkers On Mossin’ Around The Grahame Begg-trained Mossin’ Around (Mossman) will have blinkers reapplied when she runs in the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 84 (1200m) at Moonee Valley tomorrow. After running seventh first up at Caulfield on 7 January, Mossin’ Around’s float caught fire on the highway, but she and her handler managed to escape unharmed. "She never had any ill effect," said Begg. "It was just a matter of how she came through that race. On the day that she ran it was a really hot day. She pulled a plate off in the run and we felt that she really felt the track. She sort of jarred up and never really hit out. She looked disappointing and on paper she was disappointing, but I felt there was a legitimate excuse."

Manolo Blahniq Set To ResumeThe Tony Noonan-trained Manolo Blahniq (Jimmy Choux) will resume in a Benchmark 84 (1000m) at Moonee Valley tomorrow, with

Noonan aiming to target some of the autumn’s feature races with the colt. The three-year-old has not been sighted since running a good sixth behind Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on 29 October. “We’ll head towards the Australian Guineas with him and he’ll probably have three runs going leading into it,” Noonan told Racing.com. “The fact that he hasn’t gone beyond 1200 metres in the past and with a lack of a little bit of seasoning that way. As for Saturday, he might find it a bit short but it’s a nice kick-off point for him.’’

Tasmanian Oaks Option For Wheal LeisureTrainer Archie Alexander says a tilt at the Tasmanian Oaks (Listed, 2100m) at Launceston on 19 February will be the target for Wheal Leisure (Artie Schiller) if she runs well in the Benchmark 78 (2040m) at Moonee Valley tomorrow. The three-year-old filly made a winning debut over 1400 metres at Terang, before running fifth in a Benchmark 70 (1600m) at Flemington on 1 January at her last start. "She is a very exciting filly and produced a huge run last time," Alexander told Racing.com. "I think on Saturday, stepping up to the 2040 metres won't be any problem and we are very hopeful, she has trained on very well. We always liked her early on, she looked like a big filly that would take a bit of time.” Click here to view the fields for Moonee Valley on Saturday. Luke Dittman On Wicked IntentJockey Luke Dittman will be reunited with Wicked Intent (Wicked Style) when the four-year-old entire lines up in the 1000 metre open handicap at Eagle Farm tomorrow. Dittman rode Wicked Intent three times during the winter, finishing second on him in the Chief De Beer Stakes (Listed, 1050m), and trainer Chris Munce is hoping the jockey can bring out that kind of performance in the horse, who

has disappointed in his last two starts. "Luke has been riding well and he did handle Wicked Intent perfectly during the winter. We have drawn barrier ten on Saturday and that makes it hard," Munce said. "But he is down in class and back to 1000 metres so we will see. I will have to have a good look at the race." Chetwood Set For Australia Stakes

Jockey James Doyle, who is currently filling the vacancy at Godolphin left by James McDonald, will have the chance to secure his first Group winner in Australia when he partners Chetwood (Exceed And Excel) in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Moonee Valley next Saturday. The John O’Shea trained four-year-old is unbeaten in his four most recent starts, including wins in the Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1350m) and the Weekend Hussler Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on his last start on 8 October. "Chetwood improved through the grades in the spring and has continued to please us this preparation," O'Shea told Racing.com. "He is up against the big boys now but I'm happy with where he is at.”

Racing To Return To LakesideRacing will return to Sandown Lakeside on 1 February, following a four-month hiatus during which Melbourne Racing Club have made improvements to the racing circuit and rectified issues which led to the abandonment

of two meetings last year. MRC have now improved the home turn, a program which was supported by the Victorian Government and its Victorian Racing Industry Fund costing more than $42,000. “We are pleased to have been able to pinpoint and resolve those fundamental issues, which was assisted greatly thanks to the generous support of Minister Pakula and the Andrews Labor Government,” said MRC’s general manager Jake Norton.

Jameka Unlikely For Sydney Autumn

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jameka (Myboycharlie) is unlikely to run at the Sydney Autumn Carnival, trainer Ciaron Maher revealed yesterday. The four-year-old mare, who has not raced since finishing 15th in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), where she was subsequently found to be lame, will likely resume in the C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 11 February and finish her season in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on 11 March. “She will kick off in the Orr Stakes and head to the Peter Young Stakes and the Australian Cup and that might do her,” Maher told Racing And Sports. "It certainly won't be a taxing campaign. She really spelled well and her action is great. She's in good order.”

Bayliss Ends Apprenticeship EarlyJockey Regan Bayliss is now a senior jockey after successfully applying to finish his apprenticeship six months early. Bayliss, who rode out his claim at Flemington last month, has ridden 25 metropolitan winners in Melbourne so far this season to be equal third with Damien Oliver and apprentice Ben Allen in the jockeys’ premiership. Bayliss returns to the saddle next week after he finishes a careless

riding suspension. "I can't claim anymore and I've completed the education side of my apprenticeship with Racing Victoria so it made sense to become a jockey," Bayliss told Racing.com.

Cartwright Decision DelayedJockey Josh Cartwright will have to wait until next week at the earliest before learning the severity of his penalty for reckless riding. The 22-year-old pleaded guilty to the charge when it was deemed he intentionally rode Senior Council (Hussonet) into another horse at Morphettville on Saturday, in a race which was eventually won by Murti (Murtajill), ridden by Cartwright’s girlfriend Anna Jordsjo. Stewards had aimed to resolve the matter this week, but confirmed to Racing.com yesterday they now need more time to investigate the incident.

New Zealand

Laming Pleased With Sly RomanceVictoria-based trainer Richard Laming is pleased with Sly Romance (Pentire) as he prepares the gelding for a tilt at Saturday’s Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at Trentham. The five-year-old, who will look to follow up his last start victory over 3000 metres at Moonee Valley when he tackles the NZ$250,000 race, has drawn barrier four with Jonathan Riddell booked to take the ride. "It's hard to weigh up the form but they tell me that he's right in it. I spoke to a few people over there that know the horse's form from here," Laming said. "He's going to get a good run and the conditions suit. He settled in well and galloped on Tuesday morning and his work was good.”

Sunrise Ruby Seeks Karaka Million StartTrainer Stephen McKee will be hoping two-year-old filly Sunrise Ruby (Jimmy Choux) can win at Tauranga today to guarantee a start in the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on 29 January. McKee, who won the Karaka Million last year with Xiong Feng (Iffraaj), already has the Group Three winner Hasahalo (Savabeel) and last start winner Star Treasure (Lonhro) en route to the NZ$1,000,000 race. “If she

wins this race she’ll go to the Karaka Million,” McKee told www.theinformant.co.nz. “It’s a pretty attractive option for owners of two-year-olds, so they’re keen to have a go. There’s a few bridges to cross yet, she’ll need to win this race to get enough money to make the field, but that’s the plan.”

Trip To Suit HiflyerTrainer Peter Lock is confident that a step up in distance will suit Hiflyer (Tavistock) when he lines up in a Benchmark 75 (1600m) at Tauranga today. The Te Aroha-based trainer opted to run the gelding over 1600 metres rather than 1400 metres at Waikato on Sunday, for which he also held and entry. "The mile will help him and the rail is in the true position at Tauranga whereas it's out ten metres at Te Rapa," Lock said. "It's also a much better stake at Tauranga and the horse deserves a go at it. It's certainly no foregone conclusion and the horse (Highlad) that's come back from Australia is a quality three-year-old so it won't be easy.”

Gavelhouse NZ Catalogue OnlineThe most recent New Zealand gavelhouse.com catalogue is now online, with a total of 11 lots on offer. The catalogue is made up of seven broodmare prospects, one colt, two geldings and a race mare. Among the horses up for auction is Mayday Jones (O’Reilly), catalogued as Lot 9, who is a sister to the Group Three-placed Black Muscat and is offered in foal to the Group One-producing stallion Zed (Zabeel). Final bids will be taken on Lots in the sale from 7pm (NZ time) on 23 January. Click here to view the catalogue.

turn and never looked like being caught, with Godolphin’s Flash Fire (Shamardal) three and a half lengths down in second and Noah From Goa (Tiger Ridge), a Grade One winner in his native South Africa, a further three quarters of a length behind in third place.

Racing Second Most Attended Sport In UKRacing regained its position as the second-best attended sport in Britain in 2016, with only soccer better attended, according to a study published on Wednesday. Just under 6,000,000 people attended race meetings last year, the third-highest figure in the last ten years, though that figure is still 150,000 lower compared with 2015. Racing lost the position last year, largely due to the Rugby World Cup held in Britain in 2015. RCA chief executive Stephen Atkin said: "It is very pleasing to see racing return to the second-best attended sport in Britain against a backdrop of unfavourably wet weather during the first quarter and the competition of the Rio Olympic Games and Euro 2016."

Finest City Set To ResumeBreeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (Gr 1, 7f) winner Finest City (City Zip) looks set to resume in the Saturday’s Santa Monica Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Santa Anita, having not been seen since she took out the Grade One at Santa Anita in November. The Ian Kruljac-trained filly, who also took out the Great Lady M Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f) at Los Alamitos in April, will only run if the forecast storms stay away. "Everyone is turning into a weatherman now," Kruljac told Bloodhorse.com. "We're just trying to manage her at this point. It will be a morning-time decision, but (scratching) is definitely a thought. It's not worth it if the track is off."

Focus On Frankel Yearlings In South AfricaFour yearlings by Juddmonte's Frankel (Galileo) are set to go under the hammer at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in South Africa this weekend, while his first South African-bred runner is also poised to make her debut. The two-year-old Miss Frankel, who is out of the multiple Grade One winner Val De Ra (Var),

is set to run over 1000 metres at Kenilworth tomorrow, while three fillies and a colt are set to be offered by Klawervlei Stud (as agent) at the two-day sale in Cape Town. Click here to view the Cape Premier Yearling Sale catalogue.

First Foal For Due DiligenceThe first foal by Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Due Diligence (War Front) was born yesterday. The filly is the first foal out of the winning mare Free Entry (Approve), herself a half-sister to the Group Three-placed Golden Destiny (Captain Rio). Due Diligence won at Listed level while trained by Aidan O’Brien and also finished second to Slade Power (Dutch Art) in the 2014 July Cup (Gr 1, 6f). “We are delighted to welcome the first foal by Due Diligence,” Whitsbury Manor Stud director Ed Harper said. “The filly is an attractive bay, nicely marked in a similar way to her sire, and a good size for a maiden mare. We have 16 mares to foal to him this season, so we look forward to seeing a lot more of the same.” Due Diligence will stand for a fee of £5,500 this year.

Unbeaten Toby Edmonds-trained filly Houtzen (I Am Invincible) ran brilliant sectional times in overcoming her outside barrier

to take out Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast.

After displaying her now renowned fast early pace, jockey Jeff Lloyd quickly steered the two-year-old filly across from barrier 16 to take the lead, seemingly in a twinkling.

But the stopwatch showed that while it may have looked easy for Houtzen, the pace required in doing so was quite outstanding.

Clocked from the barrier, Houtzen ran her first 600 metres in 33.72, first 800 metres in 45.00 and first 1000 metres in 56.96 before fighting back gamely over the final 200 metres to score by a half length from the Gerald Ryan-trained colt Chauffeur (Snitzel).

Time for the 1200 metre journey was a very smart 1:09.49 but it was Houtzen’s early sectional times that were the most impressive feature of her victory.

A $105,000 purchase by Toby Edmonds Racing at the 2016 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Houtzen has now raced three times for three wins for prize money earnings of $1,285,400.

The performance of the runner up Chauffeur also deserves highlighting.

Having just his third start, he came from back in 12th place and after going deep rounding the home turn, Chauffeur ran on strongly, failing by only half a length in overhauling Houtzen.

Both are now likely to meet again in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill on 18 March.

In the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m), the Victorian-trained filly Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook) was a surprise $101 winner but she staged a good performance, nevertheless, by coming off a hectic tempo to score a late-closing neck victory.

The fast pace resulted from the contested lead between the previously unbeaten colt

Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) and the dual Group One-winning filly Global Glamour (Star Witness).

And the sectional times were quite outstanding. Clocked from the barrier they clocked the first 600 metres in 34.43, first 800 metres in 45.85 and first 1000 metres in 57.05.

The effort of the runner-up Global Glamour, under those circumstances, was quite exceptional and she should prove hard to beat at her next appearance.

While Winning Rupert weakened for fourth, his first defeat in six starts, in addition to the fast pace he had other valid excuses as it was his first attempt at 1400 metres but more significant was the subsequent news that trainer Bjorn Baker has discovered bone chip issues in a knee, which will require surgery.

The sectional times were also complemented by a fast overall time, with the 1400 metre journey being clocked in 1:21.23, which was 0.47 seconds faster than the time Testashadow (Testa Rossa) recorded in the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m), adding merit to win of Flying Jess.

Another late-closing winner was the Greg Hickman-trained mare Private Secretary (Husson) who came from last in the 16-horse field in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) to grab a half-head victory on the post.

Private Secretary returned the fastest closing sectional times of any of the winners at the meeting for the last 1000 metres (56.16), 600 metres (33.52), 400 metres (22.56) and last 200 metres (11.16).

While the fastest last 800 metres (44.66) was recorded by the Joe Pride-trained Target In Sight (Nadeem) in his brilliant first up win in the Magic Millions Sprint (1200m).

Having his first run since June after suffering a bleeding attack, Target In Sight came from ninth in the 16-horse field to win by a neck in the fast time of 1:08.78 for the 1200 metre distance.

Target In Sight also clocked quick mid-

race sections, his 200 metre breakdown (from the 800m point) being 10.84, 10.98 (400m in 21.82), 11.58 (600m in 33.40) with his final 200 metres in 11.26 to give him his last 800 metres in 44.66.

In the Magic Millions Trophy (2200m), the Darren Weir-trained dual Group One winner Stratum Star (Stratum) resumed after a brief let-up after taking out the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot on 3 December to score a very solid win under his 61 kilogram top weight.

Racing in sixth place most of the way to the 600 metres, Stratum Star ran on gamely to win by a neck from Feltre (Show A Heart) to whom he conceded seven kilograms.

Time for the 2200 metre distance was 2:16.08 (a good 200m rate of 12.37) and Stratum Star also clocked very solid closing sectional of 60.70 (last 1000m), 47.82 (last 800m), 35.58 (last 600m) and 23.74 (last 400m) confirming yet again his quality.

The last word in this week’s column goes to the debut win of the Gerald Ryan-trained colt Menari (Snitzel) in the Two-Year-Old Plate (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday.

After a slow beginning, Menari recovered to settle in third place on the rails in the small five-horse field, was briefly held up in the straight but after getting a split at the 200 metres, he then sprinted clear to score impressively by a length and three-quarters.

Time for the 1100 metre journey was smart 1:03.67 (200m rated of 11.57), which is equivalent to 1200 metres in 1:09.45 but it was Menari’s sectional times that took the eye.

Clocked from the 1000 metres, Menari’s 200 metre breakdown was 10.73, 11.09 (400m in 21.82), 11.32 (600m in 33.14), 10.93 (800m in 44.07) with his last 200 metres in 11.29 to give him a fast 55.36 for the final 1000 metres.

It was a very smart win and Menari looks to have a bright future.

Villa Rosa registered a taking debut victory at Mornington on 17 January in a quick time of 0:58.34. She got away well from barrier one under Craig Williams and she settled well in the lead, racing alongside The Centaurian (Kaphero), who raced

on her outside. When she was eventually asked to quicken in the home

straight, she was able draw away impressively and beat The Centaurian by one and a quarter lengths.

Villa Rosa is the sixth foal out of the Group Two-winning mare Truly Wicked (Rubiton) making her a full-sister to the Group One-winning gelding Amber Sky (Exceed And Excel), while her second dam is a sister to the Group Three-winning mare Ticket To Rome (At Talaq). This is a fouindividual winner for Truly Wicked, who herself is a three-quarter sister to Great Manners (Rubiton), dam of Group Two-winning gelding Great Glen (Regal Classic), who raced as Great Delight in Hong Kong.

Analysis: The Godolphin-raced filly Chatuchak resumed after winning a Sale 2YO (F) Maiden (1212m) on 12 June at her second race start to win nicely here at her first NSW start. She settled well in fifth place, on the rails, switched out (under riding) nearing the home turn and kept responding, running on late to win well. The favourite, Parlay Vous from the Joe Pride stable, raced in third place (one off the rails), challenged at the 100m and then fought well for second after conceding 3kg to winner.

Analysis: The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Onslaught scored a good first up win, his first win four starts to date, racing in blinkers for the first time. He was eased from barrier eight and was caught deep (without cover) in fifth place. He moved up (still wide) nearing the home turn, got to the front at the 100m and then drew away to score decisively despite a difficult trip.

Analysis: The Chris Waller-trained, Gerry Harvey-raced filly Walk The Streets put up a very good effort in winning here. She went forward from barrier eight and was caught wide without cover in fourth place. She moved up (under riding) nearing the home turn, got to the front at the 100m and drew away, despite a wide trip, to score quite impressively running the 1600m out well. She looks a really promising staying filly. Gold Emblem began quickly from his outside barrier (10) and soon went to the front. He got a break on straightening and kept battling back well, just finding the winner too good in the latter stages for second. The favourite Sepoy Acheva, a stablemate of the winner, raced outside the leader, was under pressure at the home turn before fighting on to take the minor placing.
