A formidable MoratuVidyalaya, captained by thirdyear coloursman AnuruddhakaKalhara will face a rejuvenatedSri Sumangala College,Panadura, skippered by fifthyear coloursman, ChathuraNilaweera, in the 58th ‘Battleof the Golds’ Big Match which
commences at the De SoysaStadium, today.
Moratu Vidyalaya are thefavourites as they have testedtheir prowess against formida-ble opponents, recording out-right victories against DivisionI teams. They beat KalutaraVidyalaya, St. Sylvester’s andPresident’s in tournamentmatches this season, while
recording an outright victoryagainst St. Mary’s College,Kegalle, in a friendly match.They lost to St. Joseph’s in atournament match, but whenthe two day tournament endedlast month, Moratu Vidyalayawere among the top teams inthe Division I tournament tobook a place in the knockouttournament.
Having amassed hugescores against Division I oppo-sition and having recorded vic-tories against MoratuVidyalaya, they will go into theBig Match as favourites, buttheir arch rivals won’t be easyprey as they have peaked intime.
Sri Sumangala, captainedby experienced campaigner
Chathura Nilaweera played 15matches this season. They suf-fered several (five) defeats,early in the tournament buthave seemed a rejuvenated out-fit of late as they have undertheir belt three outright victo-ries. A nine wicket victoryagainst formidableDharmasoka in a friendlymatch last week has provided
the spark to face their archrivals with confidence. SriSumangala beat SriJayawardenepura, SiriPiyaratana and DharmasokaColleges this season.
When the two teams meet inthe 58th encounter, SriSumangala, who were the lastto record a win in 2006, leadthe series 8-6.

Tissa Central, captained by fifthyear coloursman MalithChathuranga will have a slight edgeover their arch rivals KalutaraVidyalaya, skippered by SapumalPathirana, when the two teams meetin the 53rd ‘Battle of Mangosteens’Big Match which commences at theKalutara Esplanade, today.
Although they are a Division IIteam, Tissa Central came up withsome remarkable performancesduring the season and the magnifi-cent double of over 100 wickets and1400 runs for the season by theirskipper Chathuranga providesmore colour to the outfit, who go inas slight favourites against KalutaraVidyalaya, who seemed to be strug-gle during the two day tournament.
Tissa Central recorded three
outright wins this season and suf-fered two defeats. They beat St.Anthony’s (Wattala), WadduwaCentral and Royal (Horana)Colleges, while going down to Royal(Panadura) and Mahanama(Panadura) Colleges.
Fifth year coloursmanChathuranga, with a magnificentrecord of 110 wickets and 1486runs for the season, in just 14matches, will be the key player inthe Tissa Central camp and he islikely to dominate both their bat-ting and bowing departments.
Wicketkeeper batsman NiroshGayashan (over 600 runs), KasunThivanka (around 500 runs and 18wickets), Harsha Sampath (around400 runs and 12 wickets), RuwanTharanga (over 300 runs and 20wickets), Supun Dilshan (around300 runs and 15 wickets) and
Lahiru Sampath (200 runs with acentury) are the other players whocontributed significantly towardsTissa Central’s success this sea-son.
Kalutara Vidyalay’s record ofjust one outright victory (againstPresident’s) against four outrightdefeats in the two day tournamentmatches portrays a team strug-gling for success. But skipperSapumal Pathirana said that hewould be counting on the seniorplayers to turn the tables on Tissa.
Pathirana (with over 500 runsand 21 wickets), will rely on expe-rienced campaigner TharinduUthpala (over 800 runs) and allrounders Brian Chappel (over 400runs), Savith Priyan (over 400 runsand 35 wickets) and SandunChamara to do well in the BigMatch.

Two prominent schools inMatugama, namely, AnandaSastralaya and St. Mary’s Collegewill clash for the 47th time in the‘Battle of Pasdun Korala’ BigMatch commencing today at thePublic Grounds, Matugama.
St. Mary’s have won morematches than their opponents inthis series, which began in 1963.In the 46 encounters played so far,St. Mary’s have won nine encoun-ters against Ananda Sastralaya’stwo wins.
A victory in this annual battle
was last recorded in 1997, when St.Mary’s won under the captaincyof Chandana Kumara Yapa.Ananda Sastralaya recorded theirlast win way back in 1976, underthe captaincy of AnuraJayasinghe.
The annual battle is expected tobe a closely contested one thisyear.
Ananda Sastralaya, captainedby fourth year coloursmanSameera Jayamanna, registeredone outright victory in five out-ings this season. They beat C. W.W. Kannangara College,Matugama.
St. Mary’s, under the captain-
cy of Chanaka Dushmantha, reg-istered three outright victoriesplaying just four matches thisseason. They lost the othermatch.
Tharaka Lakshitha, who hasscored over 250 runs and allrounder and vice captainRavindu Rasanga with 200 runsand 22 wickets, are the leadingplayers for Ananda Sastralayathis season.
For St. Mary’s, skipperChanaka Dushmantha and hisdeputy Thilina Pathum havetopped 200 runs this season. Theywill rely on them for battingpower in the annual battle.
