Friday 11th August 2017 Term 3 Issue 11
PYJAMA DAY FUNDRAISER On Friday 4th August, TCRTHS celebrated our own pyjama day, where staff and students dressed
down in their PJ’s to raise money for two fantastic causes. Our school charity, Ronald McDonald
House, as well as Jeans 4 Genes Day, will both receive monies raised from our school community.
On the day, students were challenged to dress down in their PJs with prizes given for each year
group on our morning assembly. Our students really showed their school spirit, with more than
half of the school dressing in their pyjamas. Prizes were given to the following students for their
phenomenal outfits and school spirit:
Adrian Forrester – Year 7
Courtney Harcombe – Year 8
Chantiel Weir and Montana Keough – Year 9
Justin Alexander – Year 10
Chelcey Hancock – Year 11
Matthew Gray – Year 12
Staff were also encouraged to dress down and we were not disappointed, with some fantastic
outfits being worn on the day. Amanda Sullivan was lucky enough to win the staff prize with a
colour-coordinated, bright pink
and blue ensemble.
I would like to thank all staff and
students who participated in the
day and congratulate the
school community on raising
$300 for our nominated
charities.

From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the School Community
As always it has been a busy two weeks since I last wrote to you, with the staff and students
involved in a wide variety of activities both in and outside the classroom.
SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR
Once again this year we have been successful in gaining positions for both our choir and
dancers in the Schools Spectacular. The theme for this year is ‘Own the Moment’, and students
will perform in Sydney at the end of November. The students have already started to
participate in a range of fundraising activities to assist with the cost of the excursion and there
are many more planned. Please look out for these opportunities and assist the students in
achieving this goal.
CHPA RIDE FOR MABEL AND PRADER WILLI SYNDROME
From 1pm on Thursday 31st August four teams of riders led by CHPA athletes will ride stationary
(spin bikes) for a 24-hour period. Participants will gain sponsorship and have other associated
fundraisers to assist raise money for a project that our partner from Phyz X, Justin Johnston, is
running within our local community after his daughter was born with Prader Willi Syndrome.
More information about how to get involved will be available shortly.
We would appreciate any ideas and/or donations to the cause if you have contacts in the
Orange community that could help us.
Please email [email protected] or call the school if you can help with sponsorship.
SUBJECT SELECTIONS
Year 8 and Year 10 students have started to complete their subject selections for 2018. Students
are reminded to drop their signed selection sheets in to the Front Office once they have been
signed. Year 10 students need to make sure they have completed their interview with their
mentor and filled in their Senior Student Passport prior to doing their subject selections. If there
are any questions please contact Mr Nic Williams at the school.
YEAR 7 EXHIBITIONS
Year 7 students will be exhibiting the work from their latest projects on Friday 18th August in the
school hall. All parents are invited to attend and see the work that has been completed by
their students. Invitations and more information will be sent home via students shortly. This is a
great opportunity to see the interesting activities the students have been involved with over the
last ten weeks.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEYS
Each year we ask our families to complete a survey compiled by the Department of Education
asking questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and
engagement. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or
computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely
confidential. More information will be forthcoming in the upcoming weeks, but I would
encourage you to complete this survey and let us know what you think.
I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you again in Week 6.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten
Attendance at Canobolas A new initiative at TCRTHS has been to monitor and mentor specific students in relation to
their attendance. As part of a pilot program into raising our students’ attendance, five
students in Year 9 were monitored and mentored to reach a specific attendance rate over a
four-week period. Each student received an individualised target based on their attendance
thus far for the term, as well as the 2017 school year.
We are happy to announce that all students reached their attendance target for the four-
week time period and were rewarded with a lunch at the Nile Street Café in Week 10, with
our Principal – Ms Kate Wootten and Deputy Principals – Mr Stuart Riles and Mr Nic Williams.
It was fantastic to see the students work so hard to improve their attendance at school and I
would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the following students:
William Lucas
Taylah Leahey
Phoebe Jackson
Dee-Jay Parsons
Teminya Wise
Due to the success of this pilot program, Year Advisers will be working with targeted students
in all year groups to assist them with their attendance at TCRTHS. If you are concerned about
your child’s attendance at school, please do not hesitate to give the school a call and a
dedicated member of staff will be in contact with you.

This term Year 9 are studying Natural Disasters. Students were
given the task of constructing a three-story structure capable
of withstanding an earthquake. They were given a jelly base
(the unstable crust) and 16 marshmallows and were able to
choose between either 36 pieces of spaghetti or 16 straws. All
students complete the task with varying degrees of success.
Initially some groups thought the straws would be the best
support structure. However, they soon discovered spaghetti
was far superior in its rigidity. The students displayed
outstanding problem-solving skills when completing the task.
These skills where highlighted in the group who persevered in
building their structure out of straws. Overall an enjoyable
lesson with impressive results.
SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS
Year 9 have been studying
volcanic movement. Here are
some photos of their papier-
mache model volcanos.
Year 8 have studying the chemical reactions. The students heated malachite
(which is primarily Copper carbonate) to form copper oxide. The copper oxide is
then reduced to copper metal using the charcoal as a carbon reducing agent.
Mr T Milson - Science Teacher
Year 7 Technology 5 have been working hard this term completing their rotation in food
technology. This morning they made delicious healthy smoothies that they each designed as an
alternative healthy breakfast. Well done 7 Technology 5. You all did an amazing job!
Ms M Lynch - TAS teacher
TAS FACULTY NEWS
Year 8 Technology Marque have been completing their textile rotation this term. The boys
have been working hard designing and producing monster soft toys. They used the sewing
machine to piece together their monster parts, stuffed them with filling and designed their
faces from felt. The results have been fantastic with all boys completing their projects to a high
standard. Great job boys!
On Sunday 6th August, Canobolas Music students delighted in performing a concert on the
stage at the Orange Regional Conservatorium.
Ellena's Extension Recital - was an hour-long celebration of Canobolas talent. Ellena Hicks (Year
12) presented her full performance program for her Music 2 and Extension Performance HSC.
She performed a variety of pieces from the 'classical' and contemporary vocal repertoire. The
audience was in awe and delighted by her high-quality performances. We wish her luck for the
upcoming Trial HSC examinations, and the HSC Practical examinations later this term.
Canobolas Choir and brave, talented junior music students performed songs as part of the
concert.
The choir enveloped the audience with singing sounds, starting their first performance from
within the seating sections. They then performed rounds and other songs on the stage. Jace
Bishop (Year 9) wowed the audience with his own composition that he performed on the
conservatorium's grand piano. Imogen Dunn and Chloe Harshman (Year 8) sang Georgia by
Vance Joy, and Isabelle Kent (Year 8) playing the ukulele, led the closing cast performance of
Vance Joy's RipTide - including an audience singalong. It was a wonderful supportive
celebration of the talents of our creative Canobolas Music students. Thank you to those who
came to support our students by being in the audience, and particularly for your generous
donations to raise money for our students performing at Schools Spectacular.
Canobolas Choir
Our school choir is preparing to perform in the Wellington Eisteddfod on 17th August and the
Orange Eisteddfod on 31st August. A Chocolate Fundraiser is about to kick off to support the
choir and dance students performing in NSW Schools Spectacular. We ask for family
and community support in these fundraisers - as the chocolates cannot be sold at school.

♫ MUSIC NOTES ♫
On Friday 28th July, the Canobolas High Athletics Squad made their way to Dubbo to
compete at the Western Athletics Carnival. It was an early start for the students as they
piled onto the bus at 6.30am in the rain ready for a big day of competition. 40 students
had qualified for the carnival in a variety of tack and field events. Every single student
who participated in the carnival were fantastic representatives for our school and all
gave everything they had in their respective events.
The Canobolas High students recorded some fantastic results over the course of the
day, with five students qualifying for the State Athletics Carnival.
Congratulations to Erin Naden, Ebony Hay, Montana McIlwain-Browne, Kane Mitchell
and Jack Connors, we wish you all the very best at the State Athletics carnival later on
this term.
A big thankyou to Miss Somers, Miss Morrissey, Mrs Dederer and Mr Gibbs for looking
after the students over the course of the day.
Play NRL hosted the inaugural Tilly Power Shield on Tuesday 25th July at Carrington Park in Bathurst.
This was the very first Rugby League 9s carnival for girls to be held in this region. The day started
with a coaching clinic which was very beneficial for the girls who picked up some pointers on how to
tackle safely. For the majority of the girls in the team this wasn’t their first tackle experience so they
were ready to get into the action.
Canbololas’ first game of the day was against Orange High, the girls started a little slow with Orange
high first to put points on the board. But this sparked the girls into action and they then posted 20
unanswered points to run out winners 20-6. This was a fantastic effort for their first game playing
together as a team.
The girls then faced Molong Central School, this time the girls were composed from the opening
whistle. Strong runs and hard tackles in defence from Courtney Munday and Caitlin White gave the
girls fantastic field position which allowed Erin Naden and Taneshia Burns to run all over their
opponents. The girls recorded another strong win 22-4 over Molong Central School.
The girls two performances placed them in the top position in the Semi finals, where they again
faced 4th placed Molong Central School. The girls knew their game play and what they needed to do
having already faced Molong earlier in the day. The girls really gelled in this game and never gave
Molong a look-in, running out 16-0 winners.
The mighty Canobolas High team faced cross-town rivals Orange High in the final. It was a tight
game from start to finish, unfortunately the girls winning streak came to an end going down 12-10.
Only one goal separated the two teams. Every single player gave 110% all day and were a pleasure to
coach.
Best Forward - Courtney Munday
Best Back—Taneisha Burns
Best and Fairest– Erin Naden
Congratulations to Harmity-Rose Munday who competed in the NSW CHS Gymnastics Championships at
Hunter Sports Stadium in Newcastle 1st—3rd August.
Harmity was a member of the Western Team who were very competitive in their first year back in the
competition for some time.
Stay tuned for lots of photos and
a full report of the snow action!

Cyber safety is becoming more and more of an issue for families and schools.
Internet safety tips for parents
Do not let potential problems stop you from letting your child use technology for their educa-
tion and personal interests.
Put computers in a communal area of the house and try to limit portable devices (mobiles,
laptops, tablets) in bedrooms.
Consider using a USB charging station that can charge numerous devices at once thus, your
child will need to bring their device to that station to charge at night. Alternatively, charges
could be put in hallways or the kitchen at night to help limit usage during sleep time.
Consider installing filters on home computers.
Try to find out what your child is doing online. Talk to them regularly about websites they visit
or who they are following on Instagram and snapchat.
Encourage your child to tell you if they ever have a problem on the internet or if they are un-
sure of anything. Reassure them that you will not take away their connection to the inter-
net if issues occur that they want to discuss.
Remind your child to keep personal information private. YAPPY is a useful acronym to remind
students of the personal information they should not share on public online spaces. Your
full name, Address, Phone number, Passwords, Your plans
Remind your child that not everything on the internet is true and not all internet users tell the
truth.
Make sure your child sets up their online accounts to private to limit access to people they
know well. Consider age restrictions on sites such as 13+
Try and encourage your child to balance their leisure time
Create internet and usage rules for your house.
Explore government resources for parents and students such as the cyber smart website. There is
also a quick, fun quiz for students: https:// www. esafety.gov.au/kids-quiz/
PLEASE SAVE YOUR WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN TOKENS AND DROP
THEM INTO THE BOX LOCATED IN THE FRONT FOYER OF THE SCHOOL.
UNIFORM DONATIONS
If you are spring cleaning your cupboards soon please consider donating
any unwanted items of school uniform to our school. Donations can be
dropped off at the Front Office.
