(in the Lower Town), a funicular railway takes you up to the pedestrianised area of the Upper Town.

Fribourg is a lively university town, with many students from all over the world, making this a

cosmopolitan, multi-faceted mini-metropolis. In the narrow alleyways are tightly packed rows of little

boutiques, antique shops, student cafés and restaurants, offering local and foreign specialities.

One of the favourite destinations for art-lovers is the "Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle",

housed in a former tram depot. More works by the two artists can be found on the Sculpture Trail

through the town centre. Modern art is on display in the Fri-Art Gallery. Children will love the Puppet

Museum or the highly educational Natural History Museum.

It is worth making an excursion to Hauterive Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1137, and once a

stopping place on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela.

Highlights

● Fribourg Old Town – Gothic facades, pretty fountains, cosy cafés and inns, full of the charm of

bygone days.

● Espace Jean Tinguely et Niki de Saint Phalle – this museum is dedicated to the sculptor Jean

Tinguely and his wife, the artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

● St. Nicolas Cathedral – started according to German construction plans and finished to meet

French wishes, with magnificent stained glass windows.

● Funicular of Fribourg - The line was opened in 1899 and links the town centre to the Basse-Ville

(the lower area of the town).

● Gruyères/Greyerz – not far from Fribourg is the village of Gruyères /Greyerz, where you can see

the famous cheese of the same name being produced in a show cheesery.

● Murten – this little medieval town on the south-east bank of Lake Murten has a complete town

wall and a pleasant promenade beside the lake, where there is a wide range of water sports

available.

A perfect day in Fribourg.Fribourg (known in German as Freiburg) builds bridges: between the Latin and Germanic cultures, as well as between the French and German languages. Bridges also dominate the urban landscape: no less than 15 span the River Sarine, from the old bridge of St. Apolline (built in 1147) to the wooden Pont de Berne (1653) and the Grandfey viaduct, a daring structure inspired by Gustave Eiffel.

11:00Arriving at the “du Gothard”

A stroll through Fribourg is a journey through the Middle Ages.

Thanks to the Zähringer dynasty, the Old Town, with its three

levels, is one of Europe’s largest. Thanks to the student

population, the city is buzzing – not least with cultural events. And

thanks to venues such as the Café du Gothard, one of the most

beautiful and popular brasseries in Fribourg, you can enjoy the

charming atmosphere of this city up close.

12:00A gastronomic adventure

Gourmets who enjoy leafing through the pages of the renowned

GaultMillau gastro guide will know the name well: chef Pierrot

Ayer is a Fribourg institution. Now he has put his name to the

reopening of the Restaurant Le Sauvage in the romantic Hotel Au

Sauvage in the heart of the Old Town. The refurbished premises

have a stylish new look, the perfect setting for a deliciously

innovative seasonal cuisine.

14:00Putting in the Old Town

How about a post-prandial round of golf? Families and groups can

try their hand at a very unusual 18-hole course – leading right

through the Old Town. City Golf is a playful cross between mini-

golf and SwinGolf, and a fun way to explore the beautiful historic

heart of Fribourg. All you need is a three-sided club – and a map

to get you started.

16:30A new life for old walls

The Art and History Museum occupies a group of very different

buildings. Only a small part of the ensemble was purpose-built,

namely two rooms for special exhibitions (1964). The rest of the

museum is housed in three structures erected for very different

purposes: a Renaissance-era palace and a 19th-century abattoir

and arsenal. Today they all show art of outstanding quality.

18:00Aperitif with a view

It is quite possible that on the terrace of the Café-Restaurant de la

Clef you’ll hear a curious mixture of French and German known

as Bolze that is spoken only in Fribourg. Do as the locals do, and

celebrate aperitif-time – while enjoying bewitching views across

the River Sarine and of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas.

19:30Cult cuisine The Restaurant du Grand Pont La Tour Rouge enjoys a peaceful

and idyllic location next to the Zähringen bridge on the edge of the

Old Town. Complementing the exquisite creations of head chef

Marcel Conus are the views from the terrace, especially

spectacular at sunset. You can enjoy the same five-star vista

over the Old Town from the terrace of the brasserie, which

serves a range of simpler dishes.

24:00Au Parc Hotel Located just a few minutes from the city centre, this modern four-

star hotel is notable for its friendly, experienced staff and the great

attention that they show to every guest’s needs. 71 modern hotel

rooms, suites and hotel apartments guarantee a deep and

wholesome night’s sleep.
