Dear Friar Family,

What a year!* For some time now you have heard, and responded to, our message of building an athletics program that earns respect and provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to compete for championships. As I write to thank you for your generous support of Friar athletics in 2014-15, I can’t help but reflect with sheer joy on the championship moments that we experienced.

In December, the men’s soccer team clinched the program’s first BIG EAST championship and went on to compete in the NCAA College Cup. Emily Sisson followed suit in the indoor and outdoor track seasons, as she finished her career with two BIG EAST championships and two NCAA championships in the 5,000-meter race. The men’s basketball team, after another noteworthy season, returned for its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 30 years. And, in April, we cheered our men’s hockey team on to our first men’s team NCAA championship.

Because of your financial generosity, athletics fundraising increased 44% over the previous year attaining a record-breaking level of $6 million. All of this support results in our student-athletes being better positioned for academic and athletic success.

The 2014-15 season will be remembered as one of the greatest by all Friar fans. As we begin the 2015-16 year, we remain mindful of our vision and steadfast in our determination to achieve our mission. We look forward to the completion of Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium soccer/lacrosse complex, the tennis complex, and the softball stadium—all projects that are now underway. In addition, we are working on the final designs of the Friar Development Center.

A GoLocalProv review of all NCAA Division I sports teams found that per capita Providence College had the most successful men’s athletic program in the US in the 2014-2015 season. 6/26/15 Final 2015 Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings: Providence finished 2nd among NCAA DI non-FBS/FCS institutions and 1st among BIG EAST Conference members.

A MESSAG E FROM TH E ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

2015 DIVISION I MEN’S ICE HOCKEY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP The Providence College men’s hockey team captured its first-ever National Championship, and the third all-time team title for the College, with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Boston University at TD Garden on Saturday April 11, 2015. With two minutes left in the game, after BU goalie, Matt O’Connor mishandled the puck and tied the game, Brandon Tanev netted the biggest goal in Providence College history for the game winner. The Friars finished the season with a 26-13-2 record and a 13-8-1 mark in Hockey East play. Providence reached the Frozen Four after defeating Miami (Ohio), 7-2, on March 28 and Denver, 4-1, on March 29. In the Frozen Four, the Friars defeated Omaha, 4-1, on April 9 in the national semifinal, before defeating BU, 4-3 in the national final. Goalie Jon Gillies was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after finishing the title game with a career-high 49 saves, including 21 in the second period - a single season record total for saves in a period in the NCAA Championship game. The team finished ranked No. 1 in both the USCHO.com Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll after their win.

MEN’S SOCCER 2014 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSThe Providence College men’s soccer team was crowned 2014 BIG EAST Champions on November 16, 2014 at PPL Park in Philadelphia with a 2-1 victory over Xavier. The team captured the program’s first-ever BIG EAST championship after coming back from a 1-0 deficit. The team then advanced to the NCAA College Cup and finished it’s season in the semi-final round after a loss to UCLA on December 12, 2014. Come out to Ray Traecy Track this season to watch the team strive for another incredible year.

EMILY SISSON ’14 ‘16G TWO-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION Emily Sisson had a standout season during her fifth year in a Friars track uniform. Sisson won 1st place NCAA National Championship trophies for the 5,000 meter race in both outdoor and indoor track. She also broke the 5,000 meter NCAA record and was named the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner, the BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Year and the USTFCCCA Northeast Region Female Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year.

2015 Friar Golf ClassicThe 2015 Cox Sports Friar Golf Classic topped the charts by raising $150,000 for Friar Athletics. The tournament, held at the Warwick Country Club in Warwick, R.I., serves as the department’s primary fundraiser and the funds raised, directly enhance the experience of every student-athlete at Providence College from academic scholarships and support to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. 2014 Men’s Ice Hockey Golf Tournament And ReunionAs a combined reunion and golf tournament the 2014 Men’s Ice Hockey Golf Tournament raised more than $50,000 for the men’s ice hockey program helping them to reach their national championship this past year. August 15, 2014 | Raised over $50,000

Vision Cup Golf TournamentsThe men’s basketball team hosted it’s annual golf tournaments this year on October 6, 2014 and May 14, 2015 at the Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. and The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. The tremendously successful events raised over $225,000 for the men’s basketball program. JERSEY RETIREMENT On Saturday, February 14, 2015, Providence College honored three of its all-time greatest basketball players. Former Friar men’s basketball players John Thompson `64 and the late Jim Hadnot `62 and women’s basketball player Andrea Mangum `90 were honored at the men’s home game that day with the unveiling of banners with their names and numbers. (Thompson #50, Hadnot #54 and Mangum #25). The night before, the Providence College Athletic Department held a dinner to honor Thompson, Hadnot, and Mangum at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Providence.

The Friar Legends Forever Tradition began in 1996. To earn the honor, the player or coach must have made a significant impact on Friar basketball and he/she must have received national recognition during his/her career at Providence.

Thompson and Hadnot became the 12th and 13th members of the Friar men’s basketball family to be honored as part of the Friar Legends Forever Tradition. Mangum became the third player in Providence College women’s basketball history to have her jersey retired, and the fourth honoree overall. In 2010, former Associate Athletic Director Helen Bert and former Friar great Kathy Finn Hill `84 were honored. In 2014, as was Tracy Lis `92 in 2014.

MEN’S BASKETBALL RECEIVES A $100,000 DONATION FROM RAYMOND VADNAIS The Providence College men’s basketball program recently received a $100,000 donation from the estate of the late J. Raymond Vadnais. Mr. Vadnais was a member of the class of 1954 at Providence College and was a lifelong fan of the Friars. He was a season ticket holder dating back to the days when games were played at Alumni Hall. Some of Mr. Vadnais’ fondest memories were from classic games back in his days as a student. In particular, when the Friars traveled to the old Boston Garden to take on the then famous Rio Grande College, led by the legendary Bevo Francis. Mr. Vadnais spent his entire 35-year working career with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1992 as a Claims Supervisor. He also was an ROTC graduate who served with the United States Army in Europe as a French translator. A generous man, Mr. Vadnais also made substantial gifts through his estate to the Catholic Foundation of Rhode Island to support scholarships at St. Cecilia’s Elementary School in Pawtucket and the Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was a true Friar.

1994 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM RETURNS TO THE DUNK The 1994 men’s basketball team returned to the Dunk on January 10, 2015 to honor the 20 year anniversary of their BIG EAST championship. The Friars captured their first BIG EAST title in 1994, after defeating Georgetown, 74-64. The 1994 squad was led by Michael Smith, Dickey Simpkins, Eric Williams, and Rob Phelps under Head Coach Rick Barnes.

LACROSSE NYC FINANCE CAREER TRIP Members of the Providence College men’s lacrosse team attended the Finance Networking Day in New York City on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Ten student-athletes from the program attended the event that provided networking opportunities with former lacrosse alums, as well as a glimpse into to the finance industry. The players heard from professionals from six different financial firms and got a first-hand look at what it is like to work on a trading desk and the research firms that support them. The day concluded with behind-the-scenes access on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The student-athletes had the opportunity to network with former Providence lacrosse alums as well as former student-athletes. “PC lacrosse alums Matt Pymm ‘99, Brian McCarthy ‘00, Brian Kirkwood ‘92, Rich Dunphy ‘93, along with Tim Scanlon ‘90, Mike Flanagan ‘88, Mark Hibbert ‘96, Mike Cash `P15 and their colleagues graciously shared their valuable knowledge of the industry with our current athletes,” said Coach Chris Gabrielli. “We are so grateful for their time, wisdom, and sincere interest in educating us about life on Wall Street.”

STUDENT-ATHLETE CAREER NIGHT On Thursday, October 23, the Providence College Athletic Department in conjunction with the Career Education Center and Office of Academic Support, held its fifth annual Student-Athlete Career Night. The event was made possible through the generous support of Mark Mandell and Yvette Boisclair ‘84, who have sponsored the event since its inception. More than 100 student-athletes from the junior and senior classes attended the event held in ‘64 Hall. Guest speakers Dan Textor ’13 and Shiela Harrity ’87 shared their success stories made possible-in part-by the Friar network.

“This has become a signature event for our student-athletes,” Providence College Athletic Director Bob Driscoll said. “We are extremely grateful for the generous support of Mark and Yvette to make this night possible. The relationships that our student-athletes build at this event have opened doors for them to obtain meaningful careers that they are passionate about. Ultimately this is at the core of our mission at Providence College.”

CHI ALPHA SIGMA INDUCTION CEREMONY Twenty-one student-athletes were honored at the 2015 Chi Alpha Sigma induction ceremony on April 13, 2015 at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse in Providence, R.I. The event was hosted by the Providence College Athletic Department and Office of Academic Services Services. SCHNEIDER ARENA Opened in 1973, Schneider Arena recently underwent a massive $13 million renovation project that culminated in a grand reopening on Sept 27, 2013. The eight-month renovation project turned Schneider into one of finest on-campus facilities in the country. The renovation project included a 30,000 square-foot addition. Highlights of the addition and renovation include a new atrium, ticket office, concession stands, coaches’ offices, shooting room, locker rooms, meeting rooms, athletic training room, press box, five luxury suites, dasher boards, glass, video boards, video ribbon boards, scoreboards, a renovated Leary Friends of Friar Room, and a strength and conditioning facility. Schneider Arena is one of Providence College’s buildings that is in constant use. It serves the needs of the men’s and women’s hockey programs, the men’s lacrosse program, the Providence College club hockey team, and intramural programs.

RE NOVATED FAC ILITIES

Since July 2010, Providence College has spent nearly $180 million on improving our campus. Of that total, $43.6 million has gone to upgrading our intercollegiate athletics

facilities. This represents 24% of all spending.

RAY TREACY TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX

The Ray Treacy Track is located on Hendricken Field and serves as the primary training facility for the Providence College men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. The new complex has a six-lane track with eight-lane straightaways, surrounding a turf field. The turf field is used for men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and other intramural sports. The complex has seating for more than 300 fans, as well as a press box and a scoreboard. Ray Treacy Track opened in October 2013.

TAYLOR NATATORIUM SWIMMING POOL

Taylor Natatorium opened on the campus of Providence College in 1981 for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams. The majority of Providence’s 19 varsity athletic programs also use the facility for strength and conditioning workouts. Renovations completed during the summer of 2013 include a tile recut of the pool deck with Friar logos being added to the walkways around the pool, a new drainage system, and new starting blocks. A new record board was also installed.

MULLANEY GYMNASIUM IN ALUMNI HALL

In the spring of 2012, Providence College began a $3 million overhaul of the historic Alumni Hall facility, which now includes seats backs, new lighting, air conditioning, video scoreboard and control room, media workspace, sound system, and a host of other amenities. The gymnasium serves as the practice facility for the volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams. It is also the home court for the women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The renovation project was completed in October 2012.

MEN’S LACROSSE RUBBER DUCK RACE

The members of the men’s lacrosse team participated in the 17th annual Pawcatuck Rubber Duck Race in Westerly, R.I. on April 25, 2015. The team helped create the race course and interacted with the kids who released over 20,000 rubber ducks into the river. The fundraiser helps to benefit over 40 local charities and schools across Rhode Island and Connecticut.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK GIRLS ON THE RUN

The women’s cross country and track teams, along with several other Friar women’s teams, participated in the second annual Girl’s On The Run race for aspiring young runners. The cross country and track athletes participated in pre-game activities, like hair spray and dancing, with the girls, along with cheering them on throughout a 5k race.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL PINK-OUT GAME

The women’s softball team participated in the first-ever Pink-Out slow-pitch softball game on campus to raise money for the Gloria Gemma Foundation on Saturday November 8, 2015. Student teams competed to determine which would face the women’s softball team in the championship game. While the softball team fell to a student team in extra innings on a walk-off homerun, the event raised over $2,500 to support the foundation.

ALUMNI WEEKENDS Alumni from our men’s and women’s soccer, swimming and diving, field hockey volleyball, women’s ice hockey, and softball teams all returned to Friartown for special weekends this year with their teams. On April 25, 2015 past and present Friars from field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving reunited at Fat Belly’s in downtown Providence for a night of food, drinks, and reminiscing.

2015 DONOR CHRISTMAS PARTYThe 5th Annual “Very Friar Christmas Party,” for donors who give $2,500 and above to men’s basketball, was held at Coach Cooley’s home in East Greenwich, R.I. on December 16, 2014. Coaches and their players, along with some of the Friars’ biggest supporters, had the opportunity to meet and enjoy a night together with food and drinks from Capital Grille.

SEASON TICKET HOLDER PARTY 2014 On Thursday, Sept. 11, the Providence College Athletic Department hosted the 6th annual season ticket holder appreciation party on the Slavin Center lawn. More than 1,200 fans attended the event and heard from BIG EAST Associate Commissioner Stu Jackson, PC Athletic Director Bob Driscoll, men’s basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley, men’s ice hockey Head Coach Nate Leaman, and women’s basketball student-athlete Evi Iiskola (Espoo, Finland). The event was developed as a way to show appreciation for each of the College’s season ticket holders. It also provided fans the opportunity to meet members of the coaching staff and members of the men’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, and women’s basketball teams in a casual setting.

COX SPORTS ATHLETICS DONOR OF THE YEARTom Palamara ’80 was honored as the 2015 Cox Sports Donor of the Year. His leadership and support of the women’s ice hockey program and the renovation to Schneider Arena has helped transform the landscape of Friar Athletics. Thank you, Tom!

BIG EAST FUNDRAISER AT PJ CLARKE’S Hosted by Providence College alumnus and Board of Trustees member Tom Boyan ’85, the event is held every year during the BIG EAST tournament. In 2015, it raised over $60,000 for Providence College Athletics.

DONOR TRIPS Friar supporters got a taste of what it feels like to be a member of the men’s basketball team while traveling to several away games this past season, including those at Creighton, DePaul, and Xavier. AUTISM AWARENESS Over the first weekend of February 2015, Providence College, along with over 80 other NCAA men’s college basketball teams, participated in Autism Awareness games across the country. The PC men’s basketball team dedicated their game to the local organization Autism Speaks, to help raise awareness for the autism community. Friars supported the puzzle piece symbol on the players’ warm-ups and coaches lapel pins.

6-3 • JUNIOR • GUARD • NEW LONDON CONNECTICUT Kris Dunn is back for another season in Friartown! Dunn had a breakout year in 2014-15. The sophomore point guard earned a number of All-America honors, including being named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, NBC Sports.com Second Team All-America and CBS Sports.Com Third Team All-America. Dunn, who recorded the second highest Friar single-season assist mark with 247 assists, earned a number of honors this season, including BIG EAST Player of the Year, BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, USBWA All-District 1 First Team and NABC District 5 First Team honors. Dunn became the first Friar ever to earn the BIG EAST Player of the Year honor and the first guard in the history of the BIG EAST to capture Player of the Year and also earn Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Dunn led the league in assists (7.5) and steals (2.7). He ranked third in nation in assists per game and fifth in the country in steals per game. Dunn also led the league in both of those categories in conference play and became the first player in the history of the BIG EAST to accomplish that in the same season. He also averaged 15.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Dunn ranked sixth in the league in scoring and 13th in rebounding. He tied for the team lead with seven double-doubles. On January 29, Dunn became the 14th player in BIG EAST history to register a triple-double in a league game with with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists versus DePaul. Dunn was the first Friar to record a triple-double since Geoff McDermott accomplished the feat versus Harvard on Dec. 22, 2006 with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Dunn’s triple-double was the ninth in Friar history and the first for the Friars in BIG EAST play.
