Dr. Aman Bhullar and Dr. Misty Henne graduated from Temple University and practiced for many years prior to opening their own practice in May 2007. Question: Can I correct my crowded front teeth with crowns or veneers instead of braces?

Answer: Great question, we are seeing more and more adult patients inquiring about options to correct misaligned teeth. It really depends on the extent of the problem. Minor discrepancies of crowding or spacing can be ‘masked’ well with veneers or crowns. I say ‘mask’ because the position of the roots is not being altered but the portion of the tooth above

the gums is being changed. In other words, the underlying orthodontic problem is still present.

There are advantages and disadvantages to consider with crowns or veneers. The greatest advantage of crowns/veneers is that the complete procedure is usually completed in 2-3 appointments over a few weeks. Another advantage is that the colour, shape and size of the teeth can be improved with crowns and veneers.

The major disadvantage is that the teeth will have to be trimmed or shaved down to allow the crowns or veneers to be placed. A veneer is less aggressive to your tooth structure and requires less reduction but a crown will last longer. It is important to remember that these procedures do not last forever and will need to be replaced in the future.

Orthodontic treatment is the alternative option to getting crowns or veneers. There are more aesthetic options other than metal braces to consider such as Invisalign clear aligners, porcelain brackets

and tongue side braces. With braces, the actual misalignment is being corrected and importantly healthy tooth structure doesn’t need to be shaved off. With a well fi tting retainer the results can last a lifetime but takes several months to years to complete.

The choice is yours. Discuss the opinions with your dentist and see what meets your needs best. Remember that a straight smile is not just about aesthetics, but also will allow you to fl oss easier and improve gum health!
