THE PROJECT MAPS AND KEY

• 8” x 11” NATURAL ISLAND MAP (placed on display board for presentation

• 3 ft. x 4 ft DEVELOPED ISLAND MAP (separate from display board; will be laminated.

• ONE MAP KEY with all symbols and colors for both maps – can be placed on display board or included in developed island map if there is room

NATURAL ISLAND MAP RUBRIC

65 total points may be earned. Everyone in group receives same grade for map.Number in parenthesis is the multiplier, i.e. contour lines total possible pts is 5 x 3 = 15

SUPERIOR = 5; GOOD = 4; AVERAGE = 3; BELOW AVERAGE = 4; POOR = 1 MISSING = 0

CONTOUR INTERVALThe contour interval you choose is based on the relief or topography of your selected island or island group. The chart below gives suggestions for contour interval. Consult with me if necessary before making a choice. Contour interval should be displayed below the scale in the lower central portion of the map. MAP RELIEF - CONTOUR INTERVALMostly low lying island with elevations no greater than one hundred feet 1-5 feetMostly low lying island with elevations no greater than two hundred feet 5-10 feetEqual low and medium to high elevations not exceeding five hundred feet 10-50 feetMountainous island; very little low-lying area; elevations exceed 1000 feet >50 feet

OCEAN SURROUNDING ISLAND

• depths of the ocean completely surrounding your island within 1-2 miles • shades of blue or bluish-green pencil to show ocean depths (lighter colors for shallower water) • Show direction of ocean current or long shore current by neatly drawing arrows using a blue extra-fine tipped marker.

MAP SYMBOLS AND COLORSColors, textures and symbols you use on your map to represent natural features and conditions should all be recorded in your map key, which will also include colors, textures and symbols used on your developed island map (next phase).

It is strongly recommended that you keep an on-going map key that is a work-in-progress. You may design your final map key as you do the finishing touches on your developed island map.

CONTOUR LINES

• neatly drawn with pencil• show the details of the landscape and represent the relief or topography of the island• every fifth contour line is darker than the others and its elevation is neatly printed on or directly above the line in several places• when crossing streams, lines should “V” pointing upstream. • Proximity of lines represents steepness• never should contour lines cross one another.

DEVELOPED ISLAND ATTRIBUTES POPULATION This is one of your most important decisions. How many people can your island support? Determine the “Year round” or permanent population of your island. This may be a threshold population based on the conditions of your island. Also determine a maximum number for visitors or tourists at one time. Justify your decision on population IN YOUR OWN WORDS and submit by printing out your write-up or by emailing it to me. Length of write-up: at least 200 words.

PRESERVATION AREAS

Decide what areas of your island should be preserved (not developed). In your write-up for this attribute, describe the areas you have chosen to preserve and give good reasons why the island and its community will be better off.

MUNICIPAL PLANNING

This category includes placement or layout of residential and business districts, and placement of parks, recreation areas and greenways, layout of public transportation systems and roads, airports and docks (for water transportation). Municipal planning also includes the placement of various infrastructure components such as waste and recycling, water treatment and electricity generators and distribution network. Before writing this one up, devise and submit a CONCEPT MAP or outline. Decide what would work best given the conditions of your island

TRANSPORTATION

A practical, efficient and innovative transportation system is an essential part of a sustainable community. Describe in detail all types of transportation on your island. How do the various components interconnect making transportation easy, efficient with the lowest carbon footprint possible? You described the layout of the transportation system in the last section. Now describe in detail how each component of the transportation system works.

ENERGYDevise a practical renewable energy program and system for your island. It must make sense given the conditions of your island. What are the readily available renewable resources? How can these resources be put to use in generating electricity or providing heat? Distinguish between generation and distribution of electricity over a grid vs. plans for single structures. What measures will be taken to prevent energy loss

WASTE AND RECYCLINGYour island will have a practical and sustainable waste and recycling program. Review and adopt the Cradle to Cradle Philosophy. In your write-up, describe your waste disposal and recycling program. What aspects of it conform to the Cradle to Cradle Philosophy? What else can be done to reduce waste on your island?

WATERThe most important resource on your island is potable or drinking water. What are the main and secondary sources of drinking water on your island? How is water treated so it is safe to drink? What are other important uses of water on your island? How is water conserved? What is your plan for storm water? How will you limit storm water runoff and increase infiltration? Consider using the water chapter in the text UNDERSTANDING EARTH for information.

RECREATION

Your developed island will have outdoor and indoor recreational facilities. Consider climate and other factors when deciding on recreational pursuits. Be realistic with what you build -for example. a stadium or arena is not practical, nor is it sustainable, on a small, remote island.

FIVE FEATURED SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS

Your island must have at least FIVE “projects” that are the epitome of “green” design. While it is required to have an overall development plan that is sustainable, FIVE projects should stand out as worthy of coverage in a journal such as Architectural Digest. Three of your projects should be buildings and two should involve land use. In your own words, describe each project in detail. What makes it sustainable?

Ideas for sustainable or “green” projects include: hotel and conference center, office building, stadium or arena, school, museum, aquarium, business district, marina and waterfront, greenway, public transportation system, golf course, power plant and solid waste and recycling facility. You’ve already come up with ideas for many of these projects in your previous assignments. Now get specific. Begin by coming up with a name for the project you are writing about and describe it. Since you need to write about five projects, you may submit one write-up at a time.

ISLAND CHALLENGE 2010 – week by week summarythis is what I put on the bulletin board and as a heading to my web site

JANUARYweek 18-22 Introduction to Island Challenge. Review of materials (project notebook and online). Selection of island or island group.

Week 25-29Thoroughly examine the island or island group from which your island is based. Research natural attributes and take notes. Research geologic history and take notes. Create a diagram showing a geologic timeline.Original name for your created island is due on Friday.

FEBRUARYWeek 1-5Work on natural island attribute essays and account of geologic history. Continue work on natural island map and key. Submit natural island attribute essays on Friday for editing. Submit account of geologic history on Friday for editing.

Week 8-12Once returned to you, do final edits for natural attributes essays and resubmit within a week. Do same with account of geologic history. Final version of natural island map and key is due this Friday. If you are caught up, begin work on developed island particularly account of human history

Week 15-19All groups should be working on developed island by now. This includes map, developed island attributes and account of human history, which is due on Friday.

Week 22-26Work on map and developed island attributes. Think about three “projects” on your island, which you would like to highlight and innovate! The developed island attribute essays are due this Friday. Resubmit human history essay within a week of getting it returned.

MARCH - Week 1-5Work on developed island map, incorporating your designs and ideas for transportation, energy, recreation, preservation of land and natural resources, etc. Follow map guidelines and ask questions. Essays for each of three sustainable projects are due Friday.

Week 8-12Continue work on developed island map. Resubmit essays for sustainable projects within a week after getting them returned. Begin the detailed design of one of your chosen projects. Use Google Sketch-up or other tools for this sustainable project. Before you build this project (whether out of basswood or other materials) please show me your design and plans. At the very least, your project should be chosen by Friday
