The Blue Yonder is a five-piece homespun indie folk rock band from North East Victoria, whose soaring originals & tasty harmonies evoke panoramic images of the Australian landscape. One thing’s for sure - they’re guaranteed to feed an empty dance floor!

Bohemian Nights The exuberant Ernie Gruner (violin, mandolin, vocals) & Phil Carroll (vocals, accordion, kaval) play European, Gypsy & Klezmer music, ranging from soulful to wild. They’ve hit festivals around Australia & New Zealand, & have seven New Zealand tours under their belts!

Bruce Watson Songwriter & performer Bruce Watson is an icon of the folk scene, with a swag of awards & songs covered by performers including Eric Bogle. His songs are joyful, thought provoking & totally engaging, reflecting life, ordinary

people & the big issues, often with a quirky sense of humour.

Candice McLeod Endearing folk songbird, Candice McLeod, has lived a full-time touring life on the road for the past four years. From the red dirt of Alice Springs, salty seas of the east, & the rolling hills in between, Candice has taken her music across the country, including to the 2016 & 2017 Yackandandah Folk Festivals & Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival.

changoTRee In the past year changoTRee has traversed the globe, recording, writing & performing at shows & festivals from New Orleans to London, Ireland to France. changoTRee melds magical roots, blues-cruise & funky-folk with soaring harmonies, & swampy grooves with a splash of surf reggae chang.

Chris While & Julie Matthews Chris While & Julie Matthews’ musical partnership began in 1993 when they were key members of the legendary folk super-group The Albion Band. In 1997 they shifted focus to their work as a duo, which

has taken them around the world & seen their songs covered by artists including Mary Black, Barbara Dickson, Christine Collister & Fairport Convention.

The Coconut Kids Infectiously fun, the genre-defying Coconut Kids are friends from Adelaide who create French-influenced folk using ukulele, brass, mandolin, violin, rhythm & cheeky power vocals. These coco-nuts went from jamming around kitchen tables & campfires, to playing as an eight-piece at interstate festivals, to showcasing their work in Texas within 18 months.

Corin Raymond This Canadian songwriter’s love of words began in the car with his father, who would tell him Greek myths to pass the time while driving the jack-pined distances of Northern Ontario. Thus Corin was set on the path to becoming a songwriter. Corin’s latest album, Juno-nominated Hobo Jungle Fever Dreams, is his finest collection yet.

David Ross MacdonaldSon of an ex-jazz trumpeter dentist, David ditched geology to fail at jazz college, took up washboard to join The Waifs over a Port Fairy Guinness, fell in love with a 1935 Gibson guitar while touring the USA with Bob Dylan, & has been writing songs & riffing stories to anyone who cared to listen ever since.

Faith I Branko Faith & Branko Ristic form the core of their high-energy live performance, combining the accordion, violin, effects pedal & tabor pipe to take the audience on a journey from melancholy Roma violin laments to explorations into jazz improvisation, swing, Gypsy Rumba & Turkish influenced violin solos.

Forgotten Land David & Gem King can usually be found playing music at sessions & venues around this region. In 2017 their musical careers entered a new phase, with a win in the open category of the Yackandandah Folk Festival busking competition.

Darcy Johan is a rising talent in the region having won the Yackoustica competition in The Shed in 2017.

Elephant Sessions Hailing from the Scottish highlands, Elephant Sessions burst onto the indie folk scene last year, releasing an award-winning album in June, & performing at some of Europe’s most notable festivals shortly afterwards. Audiences crowd-surfed their way through the summer, & marquee floors broke under the weight of bouncing fans!

Gina Williams & Guy GhouseGina Williams & Guy Ghouse will capture your hearts through songs & storytelling in rare Noongar (Aboriginal) language. Combining guitar brilliance & incandescent vocals, it’s an extraordinary musical journey.

Georgia & Garry Rose Featuring Golden Fiddle winner 21-year-old Georgia, & father Garry, this duo plays a scintillating range of Celtic & European tunes from mesmerising airs & waltzes to breathtaking jigs & reels. Georgia & Garry’s captivating & diverse songs will have you singing & dancing along.


The Good Girl Song Project In this theatre-based song cycle, seven of Australia’s leading folk musicians recount a voyage taken by young women to Australia in the 1830s. A must-see new work that combines old-fashioned storytelling & new Celtic-flavoured songs. The group will be launching its new CD at the festival.

Gordie MacKeeman & His Rhythm Boys An ace fiddle player nicknamed “crazy legs” for his frenetic loose-limbed step-dancing, Gordie MacKeeman just loves to perform. Combine that exuberance & onstage dynamism with the stellar musicianship of his multi-instrumentalist comrades His Rhythm Boys, & you have an unstoppable roots music force.

Gordon Mullen is a Yackandandah identity & singer, songwriter & keyboardist, who will take to the stage this festival to perform a mixture of live performance & pre-recorded material.

Guyy & The Fox Guitar meets violin in this mesmerising & captivating duo. Award-winning musician Guy Lilleyman & Amelia Gibson join forces to offer an eclectic performance ranging from folk ballads to soaring instrumentals & everything in between!

Imogen Pemberton Singer-songwriter Imogen Pemberton mesmerises with lush vocals, soaring melodies & sophisticated guitar playing. Her debut EP Spine (2016) captured her own unique vision with folk ballads that are haunting, heartfelt & raw. Together with cellist Oliver Downes, Imogen conjures soundscapes to break the heart & nourish the soul.

John Flanagan Trio John’s engaging lyricism, uplifting melodies & warm vocal timbre have seen him compared to James Taylor & Paul Kelly & described as a “songwriting force of a new generation”. Festival favourite Liz Frencham (double bass) & bluegrass virtuoso Dan Watkins (mandolin/guitar) add dynamic arrangements & stirring, warm vocal harmonies.

The Knott Family Band’s brand of bluegrass features four-part harmonies & lyricism reflecting traditional & lived storytelling on top of their string-band arrangement. With members from Melbourne & across rural Victoria, they play bluegrass-infused songs that reflect traditional & contemporary influences from Bill Monroe to The Punch Brothers.

Lady Valiant is a blues/folk act with attitude. Formed in the United States & based in Far North Queensland, this duo bases its sound around lead singer Glenna Lynes’ raw, soulful & bluesy voice. Mix this with some driving stomp box & well-placed dirty slide guitar, & you have the Lady Valiant recipe.

Laura Hill Thousands of purling whispers have revealed one of Australia’s most beautiful secrets - Laura Hill. A singer-songwriter in the great traditions of the craft: fearless, inventive, evocative & honest. Laura’s is a voice that has to be heard to be believed.

Lindsay LouAs a vocalist, Lindsay Lou falls into an elite category. Along with her band of equally accomplished musicians, Lindsay Lou brings to the stage her own brand of Americana, an act that is not to be missed.

Mariah McCarthy Originating from Heathcote, folk singer songwriter Mariah McCarthy made the move to Melbourne four years ago & quickly gained recognition in the folk scene with her duo Deer Prudence. Mariah now focuses on her work as a solo musician, producing intimate, thought-provoking songs, which tell stories of love & loss.

Marisa Quigley is an award-winning Australian blues & roots singer songwriter, solo artist & cabaret performer. With her charismatic stage presence & powerhouse delivery, the husky-voiced chanteuse has drawn comparisons with Janis Joplin & Bonnie Raitt.

New Flamenco Project Fierce footwork, bone-rattling castanets & shawl flourishes make palpable the passion of New Flamenco Project’s guitar & vocal accompaniment, in a performance sure to set hearts racing.

The Northern Folk is a collective of 11 musical ambitionists spreading their unique brand of folk, pop & rock into the roots of small towns

& big cities alike. Led by two vocalists & filled out by a roaring horn section, the band’s big sound is continuing to earn it a following wherever it travels.

O’Shea Ryan Irish DancersRecently returned from brilliant performances overseas at festivals in Portugal & Romania, where they were honoured by being invited as special guests, the O’Shea-Ryan Irish Dancers are once again looking forward to performing at the 2018 Yackandandah Folk Festival.

Pete Denahy released a comedy album in 2014 featuring songs about the over-use of mobile phones, selfies, food & flatulence. The songs have delighted & disgusted a wide range of people, which seems to suit Denahy. He’s also written songs about Yackandandah in the gold rush days & beyond, which feature on his latest bluegrass albums Wishbone Road & Singin’ Shoes.

Rachel Clark A self-taught singer songwriter, Rachel Clark delivers a heart-felt

& intimate combination of music & storytelling. With bare-all honesty, her soulful acoustic folk tunes tell stories of loss, love & the battles fought within ourselves.

Ten Strings & A Goat Skin Transforming tradition with vigour, curiosity, humour & spark, this trio from Prince Edward Island brandishes bodhran, acoustic guitar & violin to play seamless, barrel-drum-tight, rhythmically innovative & wildly entertaining music. Inspired by its Atlantic Canadian heritage, the band’s music ranges from traditional to original music, & is always infused with infectious rhythms.

Tom YatesTom is the man behind the festival’s Poet’s Breakfast, & this year he also takes to the stage to present a selection of his lyrical & moving songs, accompanied by laidback guitar.

Ukulele Death SquadThe World’s Most Dangerous Ukulele Show reinvents the uke by playing everything from folk to flamenco in frenetic & death-defying style. There’s a reason these nylon-stringed virtuosos are selling out shows across Australia & Europe. With stage-craft, mad, thumping rhythms & outrageous solos, the squad will quite literally blow your mind.

Tom Richardson Tom’s songwriting, storytelling & intricate guitar playing are a delicate balance of grace, truth & passion. Renowned as a maestro on the loop pedal, Tom creates soundscapes of four-part vocal harmonies, multiple guitar sections & complicated percussion grooves, all live on stage.

Vanessa Delaine is a Wodonga-based singer songwriter blessed with a voice that leaves audiences breathless. Vanessa will be accompanied by Osbornes Flat bass guitarist Michael Barnard, known for his howling blues riffs & wicked blues harp. This duo is making waves internationally, having won multiple awards for their albums Runaway & Wild & Free.

VIVOX is a wine-&-cheese-fuelled collaboration between a local builder, architect, postmaster, barista, consultant & scientist. Together, Dan Carberry, Doug Westland, Chris Horton, Chris McGorlick, Colin Thornton & Terry Hillman are Yackandandah’s favourite a cappella group, regularly delighting the community with their diverse vocal arrangements.

William Alexander or “The Kid From Bourke”, has a passion for old songs written in a time when life was tough & living was simple. William spends his time roaming the bush with his wife, archiving & performing forgotten ballads.

Yoga Loves Music They’re back! Yoga Loves Music is yoga practice blended with waves of vibrational soundscapes to invoke the highest connection to your true essence & awaken your mojo!

General inForMationTowards sustainabilityEach year, the festival generates about 80 wheelie bins of waste. Much of this can be recycled or reused in some way, however, & the festival is committed to ultimately reducing what goes to landfill to zero by 2022.

In 2017, the Green team sorted 54 bins of discarded material & recovered all for recycling, except four bins which went to landfill. Do your bit this year, & help ensure we recover as much discarded material for reuse or recycling as possible.

Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY) In 2018, Yackandandah Folk Festival is again delighted to support Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY), by committing 50% of this year’s surplus to the town’s exciting renewable energy transition. TRY is working to transform Yackandandah community’s power supply to be 100% renewable by 2022. Until then, TRY has launched a Perpetual Energy Fund - towards which our contribution will go - which will be used to underwrite the adoption of energy efficiency & solar projects around the area. Our aim is become a sustainable & carbon neutral event. In 2014, in partnership with Yackandandah’s cooperatively owned petrol station, YCDCo, 3kW solar panels were installed. These generate more power annually than is used in the main venues during our entire festival.
