RegentScholarsRequirementsSouth Dakota high school graduates completing thefollowinghighschoolcourseswithnofinalgradebelowa"C"(2.0ona4.0scale)andanaveragegradeof"B"(3.0ona4.0 scale) shallbedesignatedasRegentsScholarsandshallbeeligibletoreceiveaRegentsScholarDiplomaupon request by a high school administrator to theDepartment of Education. High school graduatesdesignated as Regents Scholars automatically areadmittedtoallsixpublicuniversities.

• 4 units of English, with emphasis on grammar,composition,orliteraryanalysis;oneyearofdebatemaybeincludedtomeetthisrequirement.

• 4unitsofalgebra,geometry,trigonometry,orotheradvanced mathematics, including accelerated orhonorsmathematics(algebra)atthe8thgradelevel.

• 4 units of science, including 3 units of biology,chemistry, or physics in which at least one regularlaboratory period is scheduled each week;acceleratedorhonorsscience(biology,chemistry,orphysics)providedin8thgradeisacceptable.

• 3 units of social studies in history, economics,sociology,geographyorgovernment.

• 2unitsofamodernorclassical language;AmericanSignLanguageisconsideredamodernlanguage.

S.D.OpportunityScholarshipRequirements

To be considered for the scholarship you must be aresidentofSouthDakotaatthetimeofgraduation,haveanACTcompositescoreof24orhigher(oracombinedverbal and mathematics SAT score of at least 1070),attend a university, college, or technical schoolaccreditedby theNorthCentralAssociation (NCA) thatprovides instruction from a S.D. campus, enter into aprogramwithin5yearsofhighschoolgraduation,or1yearofreleasefromactivedutymilitaryservice(within5years of graduation), and complete the high schoolcourse requirements listed below, with no final gradebelowaC(C-isnotaccepted)andacumulativeGPAof3.0ona4.0scale:

• 4unitsofEnglish.

• 4unitsofalgebraorhighermathematics.

• 4 units of science, including 3 units of approvedlaboratoryscience.

• 3unitsofsocialstudies.

• 2unitsofeitherofthefollowingoracombinationofthetwo:

SCHEDULECHANGESSince initial course requests require aparent signature, all schedule changeswill require a signed form fromaparentrequestingthechangeandspecifyingthereason(s)forthechange.Schedulechangesneedtoberequestedinthespecifiedtime-frametoaccommodatestaffingandschedulingneeds.Parentsneedtobeawareofschedulechangeimplications.Formsareavailableviathecounselors’website.

DROPPINGACLASSStudentsmaydropaclassinthefirstweekofthesemesterandpickupareplacementclass,providedthereisroominthereplacementclass.Acompletedschedulechangeformsignedbyaparentisrequiredforthisoranyotherchange.Studentswillbeexpectedtomakeupallworkmissedthefirstweekofthesemesterintheirnewcourse.Studentswishingtomakeachangeinayear-longclassafterthefirstsemestermustdosopriortosecondsemester.

STUDENTSWHODROPACLASSAFTERTHEFIRSTWEEKOFTHESEMESTERWILLRECEIVEAN“F”FORTHESEMESTER.ARequesttoDropaClassformisrequiredandavailablethroughthecounselor.

MANDATORYLENGTHOFENROLLMENT/MID-YEARGRADUATIONWhen registering during their junior year, studentsmay request formid-year graduation their senior year. Mid-yeargraduationmeans the student fulfills all remaining graduation requirements in the fall semester of their senior year.Therefore,thestudentdoesnotattendclassesinthespringsemester.Studentsmustmeetwiththeircounselorandthehighschoolprincipalinthespringpriortothesemestertheywishtograduate.Amid-yearcommencementceremonywillbe held as long as there are enough confirmed graduates. Studentsmay only participate in the graduation exerciseimmediatelyfollowingtheirlastsemester.

PARTIALRELEASE(EARLYRELEASE/LATEARRIVAL) Providingastudenthasenoughcreditstobeclassifiedasaseniorduringthelastyearofattendance,studentsmayapply forpartialrelease.Thesestudentsmustbeenrolledin2.5creditseachsemester.RECOMMENDEDVS.REQUIREDAsastudentregistersitisimportanttoconsidertherecommendationsofacourse.Teacherswithinthedepartmentsetrecommendationsinthebestinterestofthestudent.Theyrecognizethedifficultylevelofeachcourseandsetstandardstobetterensuretheacademicsuccessofthestudent. Thefoundationofthecourseshouldbemastered inapreviouscourse.Ontheotherhand,somecourseshaverequirementswhichmustbemetbeforeenrollinginthecourse.

REPEATINGCOURSESStudents who fail a course are advised to repeat it for credit. The transcript will show all grades.Studentsmaychoosetorepeatacoursealreadypassed.Onlythemostrecentgradewillbecalculatedintothestudent’scumulativegradepointaverage.

CREDITRECOVERYStudentsthatretakeclassestoreplaceafailinggradeortoimproveagrademusttakeitinthesamecircumstanceastheoriginalclassforthe“F”orothergradetoberemovedfromtheirgradepointaverage(example:English10semester2needstobetakeninaBVHSclassroomwhereallofthestudentsaretakingEnglish10andasemestertestwouldberequiredsincethisisasophomorelevelcourse).Allclassestakenoffcampusorthroughtheinternetmustbepreapprovedbythehighschooladministration.Theseclasses,whethertakenduringtheschoolyearorthesummermaymeetgraduationrequirementsbutpreviousgradeswillremainasapartofastudent’sgradepointaverage.

DUALENROLLMENTAnystudentingrades11and12mayenrollincoursesinfallorspringsemesterwhichareofferedataninstitutionofhighereducationorpost-secondaryvocationaleducationinstitution.Thestudentshallobtaintheschooldistrict'sapprovalofthepost-secondarycoursepriortoenrollinginthecourse.Ifapproved,thestudentshallreceivefullcredittowardhighschoolgraduationaswellaspost-secondarycreditforthepost-secondarycourse.Theschooldistrictisnotresponsibleforanycostsinvolvedwithattendanceatthepost-secondaryinstitution.Ifastudentdropsafterthecollegedropdate,theywillreceivean“F”onbothtranscripts.Ifastudentdropsthecollegeclassbeforethedropdate,theywillreceivea“W”onbothtranscripts.Effective2014,theSDBORhasimplementedatuitionreductionfordualenrollmentforjuniorsandseniors.
