Students kick off a brand new school year; Football season kicks off; And I kick off my annual NAMI Walk fundraising cam- paign. Anyone who knows me knows I get more than a lile compeve about this! I do it with good reason. The NAMI Walk raises money and awareness for an organiza- on and a cause that I’m passionate about. NAMI (Naonal Alliance on Mental Illness) Central Texas is commied to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, educaon, and advocacy. They truly do just that. TCSO enjoys a partnership with NAMI Central Texas that benefits many. They offer training classes at our academy for our depues, teaching them from personal experience how to beer understand the dynamics of mental health crises. They offer classes for the friends and family of our inmates suffering from mental illness. This educaon helps families idenfy signs of crisis and gives them solid soluons and resources that can keep their loved one from escalang to a point where law enforcement involvement is necessary. They fight to end the sgma associated with mental illness and offer hope to those who struggle. On September 28 th , Team TCSO Cares will walk to support this worthy cause and it’s our goal to be the biggest fund raiser. MALE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Earlier this month, TCSO Explorer Post #1099 parc- ipated in the 6 th Annual John Sartain Law Enforcement Explorer Compeon in Corpus Chris, TX. Teams from across the state competed in mulple law enforcement scenarios such as Disturbances, DWI events, Traffic Stops, Felony Traffic Stops and Traffic Collisions. Congratulaons to our Explorers who placed 2 nd in Crisis Negoaons and 3 rd in Domesc Disturbances. We are so proud to have you represent TCSO! TCSO Lieutenant Dale Walls and Sergeant Alan Howard parcipated in the Texas Educaon Consorum for Male Students of Color’s Annual Leadership Summit at the Uni- versity of Texas at Ausn. The consorum is a state-wide collaboraon program focused on increasing individual success and post-secondary compleon for male stu- dents of color. Students, mentors and teachers aended sessions about social jusce and the law enforcement system, male mentoring research and best pracces, and health and wellness. BIKE RODEO SUNSHINE KIDS NAMI Central Texas is commied to addressing how the community talks about and addresses mental health, especially in the area of jail diversion for individuals living with mental illness. We understand that commitment is a community effort and are incredibly grateful for the part - nership that has blossomed with the Travis County Sher- iff’s Office (TCSO) under leadership of Sheriff Hernandez. It’s the mission of the Sunshine Kids Foundaon to “add quality of life to children with cancer by providing them with excing, posive group acvies, so they may once again do what kids are meant to do...Have fun and cele- brate life!” On August 1 st , TCSO had the pleasure to help make that happen at the their annual Lake Escape. TCSO Specialized Units offered demonstraons and stac displays - everyone had a blast! The Capital of Texas Police Motorcycle Chute Out Board of Directors also pre- sented a donaon check in the amount of $15,000. We always appreciate being invited to parcipate in community events! On August 19 th , TCSO partnered with Bella Beauty College and Keefe Group to host Fresh Start: New Year, New You, a back to school event that provided a free haircut and hygiene bag to school-aged kids. Our depues, parents and kids had so much fun talking about the new school year...Nothing like a lile pampering to get ready! TCSO Deputy Dusn Rade assisted with mock traffic stops as part of Driving By Laws’ Collision Avoidance Class. Deputy Rade is part of our DWI Unit and has parcipated in this event the past three years. He’s dedicated to edu- cang young drivers in an effort to protect them and keep our roadways as safe as possible. On August 24 th , TCSO joined Travis County ESD Staon 2 at a Bike Rodeo to teach Cub Scout Troop #685 all about bike safety. The Cub Scouts did a great job and were a very engaged and enthusiasc group! We look forward to benefing from your efforts to get involved and make a posive difference in our community! RIDE TO HEAL We were deeply honored to sign a Texas flag that will be delivered to El Paso, TX. TCSO Deputy Marn Lawrence aended the Ride to Heal Our Brothers and Sisters event and signed on behalf of TCSO. We hope this gesture offers comfort and support to the city and its first responders. We stand with you. JUNIOR DEPUTY SUMMER CAMP GROOMING POLICY UPDATE As you encounter our depues and correcons officers, you might noce men with beards or women wearing their hair in a ponytail. This is because our grooming policy has been modified. Watch the video above to learn more about the new policy and how it came to be. Earlier this month, we held our Second Session of Junior Deputy Summer Camp for 8-10 year-olds. Campers braved the heat and we had a great me learning and laughing together. We’ll announce registraon via Facebook and Twier several weeks ahead of next year’s camps.

EXPLORERS COMPETITION U.T. MALE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

This year’s Austin Pride Parade drew a large crowd and was an excellent opportunity to meet and greet members of the Travis County community. We always appreciate being invited to participate in community events!

On August 19th, TCSO partnered with Bella Beauty College and Keefe Group to host Fresh Start: New Year, New You, a back to school event that provided a free haircut and hygiene bag to school-aged kids. Our deputies, parents and kids had so much fun talking about the new school year...Nothing like a little pampering to get ready!
