of scales weigh from 0-6kg inincrements of 2g and from 6-15kg inincrements of 5g. The legal minimumweight is reduced from 100g to 40g.
This benefits the retailer by minimisingthe number of errors in calculations ata lower weight than those producedby a single interval scale - reducingthe risk of losing profits whenweighing small loose items.

UC VCO GPoSThis solution is a general purpose graphics basedproduct for use with METTLER TOLEDO UC touchscreens and EPoS Touch Screen Hardware.
Each screen is fully user configurable to includegraphic images instead of or as well as descriptions. In addition, the individual product buttons are infinitely variable in size. This graphical systemreduces the training time for operators and makes it virtually language independent.
GPoS can be set up for many differenttrades and has many powerful features fortoday’s competitive retail environment.
The safety and quality of food isunder increasing scrutiny. Whatpart can weighing systems play inthe drive to increase consumerconfidence?
There has been a technology shift inweighing systems and the ‘scale’ weoffer today is actually a point of servicesystem with weighing functionality. It isnot only one of the few interactivepoints of service in the store (beforecheckout) but also one of the mosteffective information channels facingthe shopper.
In the food safety area, METTLERTOLEDO provides solutions that supportlegal regulations such as food trace-ability, country of origin, declaration ofingredients, etc. We also provide cen-tral packing systems that have thecapability to detect foreign materials(glass, metal, etc) during the packingprocess. We are not only a weighingcompany, but a major player in thearea of precision instruments and highaccuracy solutions. Our ability to lever-age the different competencies that wehave in our hands (retail, industry, packing, lab, analytics, process), on aglobal basis, gives us the bandwidthrequired to provide innovative solutionsaddressing food safety needs.

Fresh food counters are oftenseen as loss leaders providingcompetitive differentiation. Cancounter service scales help toturnaround the profitability ofthese critical areas?
Fresh food departments are one of themost critical in-store battlefields for com-petitive differentiation and advantage.
However, when managed correctly, fresh departments can be among themost profitable areas of the store. Ofcourse, we believe our solutions enableretailers with the right strategy to gener-ate good profits in fresh departmentsand differentiate themselves from theircompetitors.
Fresh goods have a positive marginjust before the store closes and gener-ate a loss seconds after that, so themain question to answer is ‘how do Imake sure I can sell the last fresh itemto the last customer requiring it?’Complicating the problem is the fact
have their justification; the mainaspects are related to technology costsversus personnel costs and availability, consumer behaviour and of course theretailer’s strategy. Nevertheless, the cur-rent self-service and labelling devices arenot only weighing systems, they areinformation portals that increase the leveland quality of services a customer gets.
Today’s self-service scale offers easynavigation and selection of items, enhanced item information, online promotion data, cooking recipes, eveninformation about allergies, perish-ability, storage, consumption, etc.Currently every retailer is looking for ameans of increasing the customer basket, getting more wallet share andgranting benefits not only throughreduced prices, but benefits for futurepurchases. Self-service scales providea very efficient device for supportingthese processes. Each event at a scalecan generate additional advertising, promotion and information deployment possibilities.
that fresh goods are not easy to sell. They require trained people and a lot ofinformation: ingredients, fat percentage, calories, cooking instructions, expira-tion dates, storage, consumption, country and place of origin, etc.
Our solutions are already helping retail-ers improve the profitability of their freshfood business in four main ways:through better service levels and lowertraining costs; improved overall assort-ment performance; additional businessand new growth sources; plusincreased value for the retailer.
With the trend in retail towardsgreater customer centricity, howhave self-service scales andlabelling devices taken off?
We see an interesting phenomenon inthe fresh food marketplace. Some retail-ers focus on pre-labelling productsand/or using checkout scales whileother retailers embrace self-servicescale technologies. Both processes

Vision WeighPoint is another productfrom the Vision BeanStore familydesigned to offer an easy to use, cus-tomer facing self-service weigh scalefor retailers, particularly those in thefood and convenience sector.
PCMS is working with METTLERTOLEDO to integrate the WeighPointapplication into METTLER TOLEDO’sself weigh unit - offering retailers asimple solution for weighing and pricing loose products.
Self service and counter scale solution
The WeighPoint software is essentiallyanother configuration of the BeanStorePoS solution. As the software and thedata sources are the same this meansthe addition of new products or alter-ations to product prices for exampleare sent from the centre usingBeanStore’s Central Managementcomponent and the changes areapplied in-store to both the PoSdevice and the weighing device.
This offers a significant operationalcost saving as only one data set isrequired to be changed at the centreand the Central Management soft-ware ensures that the new changesare applied to all devices in storewhether they are a PoS, kiosk or inthis case a weigh scale. This solution can also be implementedin other weighing areas such asdelicatessen, fresh fish or butcheryservice areas.
Integrated PoS scale solution
The METTLER TOLEDO weigh scalecan also have additional peripheralsattached to it such as a cash drawer, scanner and printer for example. This solution offers convenienceretailers a PoS and weigh scalesolution that’s totally integrated -saving space on the counter andreducing the amount of computerequipment needed in-store.

promotions necessitated the moveto the advanced features of a PoS system.
The solutionAt first the retailer attempted to puttogether a PoS system and acheckout scale – a good solutionfrom a functionality point of view, but not optimal from a design, sizeand footprint perspective because oflimited space in the checkout area. With the UC scale solution fromMETTLER TOLEDO, the retailer wasable to run the same IBM PoS soft-ware as the rest of the store whileenjoying the benefits of an attractiveand compact hardware platform. Inessence, the open platform of theUC enabled a best-of-breed solutionfor Migros.
The resultsIn less than six months the retailerhas received a complete solutionthat satisfies all of its currentrequirements and can adapt tochanges that may come in thefuture. Now the retailer’s gourmetcustomers can enjoy the same level of service in the gourmetdepartment that they experience in the rest of the store.

The problemThe retailer has a gourmet depart-ment that does business outside ofthe normal checkout area. In thepast the retailer was able to use asimple cash register/scale combi-nation. However advances in thestores’ customer loyalty programand requirements for handling store
