Hello Roehampton Graduates, Welcome to this graduation edition of Fresh. You are currently holding in your hands the last Fresh magazine of the year and, perhaps, the last one you will ever read.

As you leave the comforting campuses of Roehampton and fly away into the big bad world of exciting possibilities (and...well... job hunting), please spare a fond thought for us and your uni. We are sad to see you go but we hope that your experience of Roehampton has been a good one and we wish you all the best.

Thank you to all graduates who have contributed to FRESH MAGAZINE in some way over the years of your Roey experience, and thank you to all of you who have read it. And so, there is now only one thing left to say: So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen and goodbye.

YOUR SABBS

WADE TOMLINSONSU PRESIDENT

A GOODBYE FROM

Congratulations! You have made it to the end of what can be compared to the

excitement of conquering Takeshi’s Castle. Years of deadlines, making memories and shaping your future have come down to this one fine day… GRADUATION!

Be sure to smile for plenty of photos, walk with pride and if you’re wearing outrageous heels, good luck! We hope you have enjoyed your experience being a student here at Roehampton and are leaving not only with a fantastic degree, but some new friends and memories you’ll have for the rest of your life.

We’ve had a great summer here at the SU and would like to thank all who have put in time to engage with us through the huge range of events, the College Cup, volunteering activities and societies. Remember to take advantage of the great services Roehampton provide in helping you reach your desired career and keep in contact with the University through the Alumni team.

There will be plenty of opportunities to visit the campus, where you can meet fellow Roehamptonians for a lovely reunion. On top of everything else,

you have won at Higher Education during a very difficult time; you should be extremely proud of yourselves. We’ve seen a lot of change that doesn’t favour today’s students but I’m sure if you look around, you’ll see that this hasn’t had an impact on the Roehampton student body. Your fellow classmates will be present in full graduate force. Please do keep following us on your social networks and stay up to date with all goings-on here. On behalf of the Students’ Union I’d like to wish you all the best of luck for the future and hope you succeed in whatever your next step may be. Have an awesome day and once again, a massive congratulations! You did it!!! Wade.

PAUL DABELLVP CAMPAIGNS

RACHAEL BLANEYVP WELFARE

Molly Vingoe will be the incoming VP Campaigns, as Paul will be waving us goodbye this year.

Rachael will be continuing on as our VP Welfare this year, but Wade is moving on, and Siobhan Kelly will be taking the reins as President of the SU.

I am sure that over the past three years you’ve made friends for life, may have woken up with

one or two hangovers, made some of the best mistakes of your life and

well, spent countless hours reading and revising. I’m sure you’re all glad to have finally now reached the goal of getting that degree! One of my favourite sayings is “If you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived” and every one of you has not only tried, but succeeded in getting your degree and you can now count yourselves as being a step closer to living whatever dream you set out to achieve. You are the first Roehampton graduates to be graduating in the Royal Festival Hall and I hope the setting and day is everything you hoped it would be when you first started at Roehampton and saw yourself throwing that hat in the air in your mind’s eye.

Graduation marks the end of your journey through Roehampton (that is unless you are doing a Master’s or

PGCE in which case good luck!) and I hope that you’ve all had a blast along the way. Remember the most powerful words in the English language are “I can” and after three years you’ve proved you can so go out there and live out that saying – self-belief can take you a long way! Good luck for the future, wherever it may take you across the world! Paul DaBell

Hello Class of 2014! Who would have thought, after all the late nights, early

mornings, afternoon naps, 24 hour library sessions and of course the parties, you would be here?!

This is it! You are about to graduate and temporarily close the door on your time at Roehampton. University is a platform for growth, development and independence. The person who arrived three years ago with bags a-plenty, excitement and fear is certainly not the person who will be graduating and leaving Roehampton today. Whether you are continuing your education, travelling the world, moving home or getting your dream job, I wish you all the best. I sincerely hope that you have made the best of your time at Roehampton and that you leave with memories and friends you will keep forever and of course, a fulfilled academic experience. You are now officially Roehampton Alumni and your return to Roey will always be welcomed, be it to see old friends, lecturers or to attend a cheeky Bop or two!

I leave you with a quote from Will Rogers: “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there” Use your degree, your skills and your experience and go make some change in the world! Best wishes and lots of love!

A WORD FROM YOUR A FINAL AND WARM FAREWELL FROM THE FIGUREHEADS OF YOUR FAVOURITE COLLEGES

MOLLY VINGOE

SIOBHAN KELLY

SOUTHLANDS COLLEGE

WHITELANDS COLLEGE

Well, this is it. It is officially the end of my time as Southlands College president. And what an amazing time I have had. I have been a proud Southlands shark for three years, and in those three years I have; had fifteen flatmates, in three different flats; been a flat rep for two years; met my best friends; eaten many a piece of fried chicken; yelled about how I love Southlands on Fez and Grand buses; covered my entire body in blue paint in the name of Bop; played croquet with Dave; flown the remote controlled

shark and seen Charlie Briggs balance on beams and jump off bins. This year we, as a college, achieved an admirable (and close) second place in the college cup and raised over £1,200 for the RAG charities (Caudwell Children, Missing People and Regenerate). Being part of Southlands means not just being part of a community but of a family (excuse the cheesiness), and I hope that it has been as special for you as it has for me. I have been inspired and motivated by everyone I have met on Southlands over the past three years and saying goodbye to them

will be extremely difficult. So to all the third years who are graduating; congratulations, good luck and thank you – try to remember that you are a shark, so never feel like a little fish in that big bad pond that is the real world.

Shark love (as always),Molly

P.S – The next chapter in my life has just begun as your new, elected VP Campaigns up in the RSU towers (thanks for voting me in). To all those of you who are reading this but not leaving just yet, do come and say hello to this soppy shark.

So all good things must come to an end, and what a privilege it has been to be your college president for the last year down at Whitelands! Reflecting back over the past year, I feel a sense of pride and triumph at our achievements, not only as a college, but as a team who have represented and supported each other throughout the year. I have worked with our social secretary; the mighty Mr George Cole, in delivering a stream of events throughout the year. We raised the bar at College Cup Events, re-established our very

own college bar; Barcode, as well as winning Shitelands for the third year in a row!

So this brings me round to saying a massive THANK YOU to each and every one of you, for creating the most incredible memories together (some sober, some not so sober) and for making the most amazing friendships! I would personally like to thank everyone who helped me become Whitelands college president 2013/14, as well as everyone who helped me win Students’ Union president for the year 2014/15! Without you, I would

not be where I am today, so thank you.

So this isn’t a goodbye, it’s a see you soon! I wish each and every one of you the best of luck for the future; I know you will all do amazingly in whatever path you pursue, because remember, you are best!

Good luck and take care,Siobhan

(P.S. If you are ever about near Roehampton, come up for a cuppa and a catch-up! My door is always open)

COLLEGE PRESIDENTS

MIKEY JAMES

MIKE BENSON

FROEBEL COLLEGE

DIGBY STUART COLLEGE

WE DID IT! Congratulations! All the best! Good luck! All that stuff! But then, of course, Goodbye! Farewell!

It’s a kind of double edged sword; glad we’ve done it but sad it’s come to an end! Think back to the first day you arrived, unpacked, met your flat mates or your first lecture or dirty pint! Now, in some sort of weird, movie montage (to the soundtrack of your choice) flash through all the cool stuff you did, memories you’ve made and

the people that have helped to make them. These are people and experiences that have and will shape your life forevermore.

And they’re a cool bunch too right? Somehow, and it’s not deliberate, Froebel seems to attract the kind of people that are willing to get out there and make their own, and others, experience as kick ass as possible and that has been reflected in the things you’ve achieved this year. Being a part of the Froebel family has surpassed all of those achievements. Yes,

of course winning everything available to us as a college was...AMAZING! But it was the support and commitment of the Froebel Fam that I’ll be telling people about for years to come, literally “Froebel ‘til I die”.

To those starting next year, you’re in for a treat! To those returning next year, continue to make your college the best and thank you!

And to those, like myself, that are finishing up; WAHOOOO! Thank you, thank you, thank you and all the best.

It’s been an absolute pleasure,

Peace amigos, Mikey James

It’s harder than you might think to write a goodbye message to all this year’s graduates. I know so many of you so well, but I still feel that I only know half of you half as well as you deserve.

It’s been an incredible experience over the past three years and I wish everyone the best of luck in the future, wherever you might end up. I guess all I can do is tell everyone to never give up, and to work as hard as I see them party.

To those travelling abroad, I hope you have amazing adventures. To those who are teaching in September, enjoy the rest of your Summer holiday. To everyone starting out in new jobs, I wish you all the best.

And for all of us still looking for work, it’ll all work out. Just you wait.

I’ll see you all at the After Party,Mike Benson

Roehampton today, Roehampton tomorrowCongratulations on your

success and welcome to the global Roehampton

alumni association – a network of some 65,000 former students of Roehampton and its four colleges.

Now you’ve completed your studies you are automatically part of our global alumni (former students) network, which allows you to easily maintain close contact with the university and your fellow graduates for life. We are always keen to hear of our graduates’ progress so would encourage you to register your up to date details at www.roehampton.ac.uk/alumni-register and join the conversation on the alumni LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook pages.

Graduation is a happy, celebratory occasion but once the dust settles you

may realise there’s a lot to get used to – maybe you’re moving back home, you’re not sure about when your loan repayments start, and the big one – what happens next – job, travel, further study? Here are our top tips to help you in the next few weeks…

The wonderful Money Doctors offer alumni support for the first year after graduation to help with tax queries and advice on finance related issues such as pensions, private medical/dental insurance and other work place money issues. Make use of the free advice

and support offered by the Employability team. From CV writing to internships to interview preparation, this is good advice which, as Roehampton alumni, you can use for life. See the website for details.

Your Roehampton email account will expire three months after you leave – so this means students leaving in June will have access to their Roehampton emails and all other IT and Library resources up to the end of September. Make sure you make a copy of any files saved and consider putting a forward on your Roehampton email account to your personal email account or input your personal email address to www.roehampton.ac.uk/alumni-register.

Wish you had the inside knowledge about an organisation, career, or job search but don’t have anyone

to ask? Sign up to our Graduate Mentoring Scheme and you can be paired with a Roehampton graduate who

can tell you what you need to know. Mentoring can be face to face or online and what’s more it’s free! Find out more from www.roehampton.ac.uk/employability/mentoring.

Don’t worry – it’s normal! You’re ending one chapter of your life and beginning a new one which can be daunting. New beginnings are usually a bit stressful but try to focus on what you’ve achieved and think about new goals and how to

reach them – there’s nothing like a new challenge!Last but not least give yourself a well-earned pat on the back. It’s been hard work but you got there so make sure you celebrate!

There are many opportunities for you to get back involved with the University

and its current or prospective students by being a voice for Roehampton, attending a UCAS or school fair or giving guest lectures or workshops. Further down the line you may want to organise your own class reunion! If you have had a great time studying at Roehampton, why not tell your story? To find out more information about helping the next generation of Roehampton students, email [email protected].

There are additional services and benefits that alumni can take advantage of, one of which is a reduction in fees if you choose to continue with your studies at Roehampton. Graduates moving onto a

We asked Roehampton alumnus and college student life officer, Jon Carter, about his personal take on life post-graduation:

“No more essays or all-nighters in the library!”

“If you can get a job in the industry you want to work in then take it (even if the pay isn’t great) it’ll help you get your foot in the door...

Don’t lose touch with the friends you made at University – they understand a side of you that no one else will and they will be one of the best networks you can have for socialising, finding out about jobs and getting through life as a Roehampton graduate.”

“It was really sad knowing that I was no longer a student and going to be living and studying at Roehampton but at the same time it was also really exciting knowing that a new chapter was about to begin and I didn’t know what it would hold.”

Our oldest known alumna is a former Whitelands student who gained her teaching certificate (shown below) in 1930 and is now aged a fantastic 104!

Did you know?

Alumni is the term for graduates or former students of a specific school, college, or university. Latin in origin, alumnus is the male term,

alumna the female term, and alumni

the plural.

Did you know?

September 2015 will see the largest reunion of Roehampton and college alumni ever at our Big Reunion Weekend. Be sure you don’t miss out!

LIFE’S A BEACHTravelling with your money after graduation

WITH NICKY REIDRoehampton’s money doctor

Gap years are a rite of passage – whether you’re planning to work, volunteer,

or just relax for a few months (or more) there’s every chance it’ll be a trip you’ll never forget.

Organising such a trip can, however, be a very daunting prospect – this is why it’s sensible to book most of your trip at once through a travel agent who specialises in gap year travel. Through them you can book flights, accommodation, adventure trips, volunteering - the whole lot.

Looking after your finances is critical so here are a few handy tips to help you on your way! People often prefer to use cards while they’re away because they’re convenient and they’re accepted around the world.

If you choose the right cards, this can be the cheapest way to pay for

things while you’re away and (with certain cards) to get cash from ATMs if you need it.

Cards can be the cheapest way to pay for things and get cash from machines abroad but only if you use the right one. Your usual card might have hefty overseas fees, so you could save a lot by getting a special ‘travel-friendly’ credit, debit or prepaid card before you go.

Your bank can hit you with four main types of fee when you go abroad.

When you spend money abroad by card, at the end of the day the amount you have spent is converted from the local currency

to pounds using the day’s exchange rate. Most standard credit

or debit cards make this slightly worse for you by adding a ‘load’ of up to 3% (so £100 overseas would cost you £103). Imagine using a credit card to take out £100 at the cash machine. With the worst kind of card you might pay: • £3 extra for the exchange rate

load• £3 for the cash withdrawal fee• £1 interest before you pay off

your bill• £2 in flat fees just for using the

cardA total of £9 in fees, just for getting out a little cash.

And remember, you get hit with these charges every time you use your card.

“Never change money at the airport - rates are hideous”

USING DEBIT, CREDIT AND PRE-PAID CARDS ABROAD

OVERSEAS CARD FEES AND CHARGES – WHAT YOU MIGHT PAY

FRESH MAGAZINE12

Page 13: Fresh Magazine Graduation 2014

There are hosts of cards to choose from, but there’s no need to trawl through the details – that’s all been done for you. Several of the comparison sites cover cards for use overseas, and you can get expert recommendations from both Which? and MoneySavingExpert.com.

Use a top credit card for the cheapest spending abroadMost cards add a 3% cost to the exchange rates banks themselves get. You can avoid this by packing a

specialist card that doesn’t add this ‘load’, meaning you’ll get perfect exchange rates which beat even the best bureaux de change. Only use one just for spending overseas; though always repay in full to avoid interest. If you don’t have a decent credit score, you can also investigate the cheapest prepaid cards. These can be a

very good option and you can get people at home to load money on for you if you run out.

Never change money at the airport - rates are hideousYou’re a captive customer at an airport or ferry terminal, so you’ll probably be lumbered with the worst rates. If you must get it from the airport, order ahead for pick-up to get a better rate (usually possible until four hours beforehand). Better still, use TravelMoneyMax.com travel money comparison site to find the best possible deal, including all fees and any commission.

Debit cards can be the worst way to spendSpecialist credit cards give good rates, but most don’t. While any card which charges you interest is a bad deal, some debit cards (bank account cards) actually have the very worst fees – as they add up to £1.50 every time you spend.

If they ask ‘want to pay in pounds or euros?’ say ‘euros’Many overseas banks or shops ask this, especially in tourist resorts. If you choose pounds then the retailer does the currency conversion – rates can often be poor compared to letting your card do it (choosing euros). If you have a top overseas card,

always say the local currency as your card does the exchange and it’s unbeatable. If not, it’s touch and go. Sometimes it’ll show you the ‘load’. If this is under 2.5%, go with pounds. If it’s over, go local.

Beware how you pay for foreign cashWhile online comparison sites will find you the cheapest rates, but there’s another possible hidden

charge at bureaux de change. All credit cards charge a cash withdrawal fee (which means you can also pay interest).

Therefore, if you’re buying currency, use a debit card, which isn’t allowed to charge this fee. Alternatively, withdraw cash and pay with that instead.

And finally, don’t let bureaux hold your cash – they’re not protected.

Before you leave Only take cards you plan to use. Leave the others in a safe place at home.

Note down the emergency phone number for your cards – it’ll be on the back of the card. Keep the numbers separate from your cards, in case they get lost or stolen. It’s better to write down the +44 number than an 08** number, as the second type may not work

from abroad. Tell your card provider or bank where you’re going and give them your contact details (including a mobile number), or they might think your overseas purchases are fraudulent and cancel your card. It may be worth taking another card from a different bank, if you have one, so you’re not stuck for cash if your main card is blocked.

If your cards are registered with a card protection agency ensure you have their phone number and your policy number with you.

Once you’re abroad Keep your eyes on your card. Never let it out of your sight when you pay, especially in bars and restaurants.

Never give your PIN to anyone else

– even if they claim to be from the police or your bank.

Always shield your PIN when using a keypad or cash machine, just as you would at home.

Avoid extra charges Only use your debit card if it has low international usage fees. If your card charges a fee each time you use it abroad, use cash or your credit card or prepaid card instead.

Take out enough for several days, carry what you need and leave the rest securely where you’re staying. If you do it in dribs and drabs you’ll have to pay lots of fees instead of just one (unless you have a card with no transaction fee for cash withdrawals abroad).

Choose to pay in the local currency if you’re given the option of that or pounds. It’ll probably cost you less, since most retailers won’t give you a great exchange rate.

When you get home Check your statements. If you find any transactions you don’t recognise, let your card provider

know right away.Pay off your credit card bills in full on the repayment date – don’t bring debts back from holiday.

If you would like anymore help or advice about travelling abroad please do contact [email protected] or phone 020 8392 3199.

Have fun and send us a postcard!

“FRESH TV has given me an amazing opportunity to gain experience within production and presenting and I would like to say a very big thank you to Hollie Abbott, who has been an incredible support all the way through, ever since I joined FRESH TV in September 2013.

The experience I have gained is exceptional and the pleasure I felt

when working on different shows such as Lawn Life, Roehampton Round Up and even creating my own entertainment news show, News Buzz, has been fantastic. All of this would not have been possible without Hollie’s support.

FROEBEL

Dear Froebelians

It’s that time of year again where another fantastic year group will be etched into the Froebel College memory book.

How fortunate that you have graduated in one of Froebel’s most successful years, what with retaining the College Cup and winning Frigby. Memories that I am sure you will keep with you forever.I want to take this opportunity to

reiterate congratulations to our College award winners – Jade Amy Palmer, Sara Mohammed, Daisy May, James Phillips and Alberto Sari. Particular thanks should also be given to Adam Thurgood and the Zeebras for bringing the Frigby trophy home, an absolutely monumental achievement!

I also want to thank our incredible outgoing College team Mikey James, Joe Kozak and Jonathan ‘Farmer Jon’ Carter. A high calibre of individuals setting the bench mark for years to come.

To all Froebel College graduates, I want to wish you the very best with whatever your future endeavours shall hold. Remember, you may not be at university forever, but the memories and friends you make will be yours for a lifetime. You will be solely missed but I hope you will visit us again soon.

All the best,

SOUTHLANDSHello Sharks

The academic year is over and you’re all grown up and graduating! I can’t believe how quickly 2014 has flown by and didn’t we have a great year?

It seems like only yesterday we were decorating the Christmas tree

I just want to say many, many congratulations to all of you who are graduating this year. It has been a pleasure getting to know

WHITELANDS

Dear Whitelands Graduates

It’s the final rite of passage here at University, the day you graduate alongside your peers, receive that degree you’ve been working for all this time, and take those photos with family and friends that will end up on the mantel piece.

It’s been a brilliant year for us here at Whitelands: With more events taking place than ever before, securing another convincing win over Southlands at the annual Shitelands match and with the help of you all, raising another several thousand pounds for our charity, Help for Heroes!

This year would not have been

possible if not for the efforts of your elected college officers, I’m sure you will all join us in thanking George Cole, Sara Mara-Phillips and Siobhan Kelly.

They have truly led the Whitelands charge this year in the College Cup while providing Whitelands with a calendar of events that involved so many students, raising the benchmark for future college officers high indeed. Thank you!

Truly savour this day, the memories will last a lifetime, alongside the friendships made during your studies. And remember you will always be welcome at Whitelands, so don’t be a stranger.

A heartfelt goodbye,

The Whitelands College team

DIGBY

Dear Digby Lions

We are so proud of each and every one of you. I am sure that it has been three incredible years that each of you have spent within the walls of Roehampton enjoying Bop, Digby Diner, Froebel lawn, Pub Grub and much more!

Rather than write up highlights of the years that you have been at Roehampton I am going to use this space to share a story with you that I think will help prepare you for life after University better than anything else I can say. So from me it is goodbye for now (I am hoping to see you all back for reunions in the future) and I leave you with the wise words of Robert Fulgrum…

All the best,

The Digby College team

Truly savour this day, the memories will last a lifetime, alongside the friendships made during your studies.

FRESH MAGAZINE28

A STORY BY ROBERT FULGRUMIt was the summer of 1959. At a resort inn in the Sierra Nevada of Northern California, I had a job that combined being the night desk clerk in the lodge and helping with the horse-wrangling at the stables.

The owner-manager was Swiss, with European notions about conditions of employment. He and I did not get along. I thought he was a fascist who wanted peasant employees who knew their place. I was 22, just out of college, and pretty free with my opinions.

One week the employees had been served the same thing for lunch every single day; two wieners, a mound of sauerkraut and stale rolls. To compound insult with injury, the cost of the meals were deducted from our paychecks.

I was outraged. On Friday night of that awful week, I was at my desk job around 11 p.m., and the night auditor had just come on duty. I went into the kitchen and saw a note to the chef to the effect that wieners and sauerkraut were on the employee menu for two more days.

That tore it. For lack of any better audience, I unloaded on the night auditor, Sigmund Wollman.

I declared that I had had it up to here, that I was going to get a plate of wieners and sauerkraut and wake up the owner and throw it at him.

Nobody was going to make me eat wieners and sauerkraut for a whole week and make me pay for it and this was un-American and I didn’t

like wieners and sauerkraut enough to eat them one day for God’s sake and the whole hotel stunk and I was packing my bags for Montana where they’d never even heard of wieners and sauerkraut and wouldn’t feed that stuff to pigs. Something like that.

I raved in this way for 20 minutes. My monologue was delivered at the top of my lungs, punctuated by blows on the front desk with a fly swatter, the kicking of chairs and much profanity.

As I pitched my fit, Sigmund Wollman sat quietly on his stool, watching me with sorrowful eyes. Put a bloodhound in a suit and tie and you have Sigmund Wollman. He had a good reason to look sorrowful. Survivor of Auschwitz. Three years. German Jew. Thin, coughed a lot. He liked being alone at the night job.

It gave him intellectual space, peace and quiet, and, even more, he could go into the kitchen and have a snack whenever he wanted to – all the wieners and sauerkraut he wished. To him, a feast.

More than that, there was nobody around to tell him what to do. In Auschwitz he had dreamed of such a time. The only person he saw at work was me, the nightly disturber of his dream. Our shifts overlapped an hour. And here I was, a one-man war party at full cry.

“Lissen, Fulchum. Lissen me, lissen me. You know what’s wrong with you? It’s not wieners and ‘kraut and it’s not the boss and it’s not the chef and it’s not the job.”

“So what’s wrong with me?”

“Fulchum, you think you know everything, but you don’t know the difference between inconvenience and a problem. If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire – then you got a problem. Everything else is

inconvenience. Life is inconvenient. Life is lumpy.

“Learn to seperate the inconveniences from the real problems. You will live longer. And will not annoy people like me so much. Good night.”

In a gesture combining dismissal and blessing, he waved me off to bed.

Seldom in my life have I been hit between the eyes so hard with truth. There in that late-night darkness of a Sierra Nevada inn, Sigmund Wollman simultaneously kicked my butt and opened a window in my mind.

For 30 years now, in times of stress and strain, when something has me backed against the wall and I’m ready to do something really stupid with my anger, a sorrowful face appears in my mind and asks, “Fulchum. Problem or inconvenience?”

I think of this as the Wollman Test of Reality. Life is lumpy. And a lump in the oatmeal, and lump in the throat, and a lump in the breast are not the same lump. One should learn the difference. Good night, Sig.

I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always tri-umphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.
