Surface: Canvas Banner 40130

Misc. Supplies: Gray Graphite paper 70141White Graphite paper 70139 Stylus 70125Fabric Medium 70084Jo Sonja Clear Glaze Medium 83106

Brushes: Papillon#1 Script Liner 20141#8 Shader 201291 inch Wash 20103#14 Flat Shader 20132

Preparation: Iron Canvas to remove wrinkles. To accommodate the Wire Hanger with Star, I turned under 2” at the top of the banner and stitched it down with my sewing machine (this could also be glued, or if you’re not using this hanger, this isn’t necessary).Transfer the design elements by slipping gray graphite paper under the traced line drawing and re-tracing the design with the stylus.

Painting Instructions:General Instructions: Basecoat each design element with the color listed using the #8 fl at brush un-less otherwise specifi ed. All fl oated shading & highlighting is done using the #14 Shader brush un-less otherwise specifi ed. When shading and high-lighting soak the area with clear water or fabric medium before side-loading and fl oating the shade color on. This will allow the paint to glide on smoothly and not drag or dry out. If necessary, you can also add more water to your brush than when you are painting on wood, the water will help the paint blend. (Anywhere that you see a mix

with the numbers in parenthesis (2:1) it is the mixing ratio - 2 parts of the fi rst color to one part of the second color.)

Paint the background around the design elements leaving them white. Use the 1inch wash brush and add water to the brush as you basecoat, making the paint move easier and absorb into the canvas. Basecoat with Yellow Green randomly picking up Hauser Light Green as you go. This will give you a background with a mottled or watercolor appearance, not opaque.

Basecoat each design element as follows:Crow: Soft BlackSign: Warm White + Driftwood (3:1)Flower Petals: Royal Purple + Warm White (4:1)Flower centers & Pole: Raw SiennaFlower Buds: Hauser Light GreenPumpkins: Tangelo OrangePumpkin Stems: Raw SiennaBucket: DriftwoodAcorns: Cap = Dark Chocolate/ Nut = Raw SiennaWood block: Top = Raw Sienna/ Bottom = Dark ChocolateLeaves: Orange leaves = Burnt Orange/ Red leaves = Cherry Red/ Yellow leaves = Antique Gold/ Green leaves = Hauser Light Green When completely dry, iron the canvas again by setting your iron on a light, NO STEAM setting and covering the banner with a piece of brown paper and ironing on top of the brown paper. The can-vas will seem softer after ironing and the paint will be bonded with the fabric.

Complete the elements as follows:

Crow: Use the #8 fl at and highlight with Royal Purple in the center of the head, the lower area of the belly, and along the tips of the wings & tail. Add a little Warm White to the Purple and brush the lighter mix into the center of the previous highlight. The eye is Warm White.Sign: With Soft Black, paint the two holes in the sign. Sideload in Driftwood and fl oat along the two outer edges, across the bottom, and under the holes. High-light the top of the sign with Warm White. Paint the Wire hanger with Driftwood, using the Script liner. Highlight using Warm White.

Flower Petals: Shade petals with Dark Purple + Soft Black (3:1) fl oats where they meet the fl ower centers. Also shade anywhere they go behind another petal. Highlight the outer ends with Royal Purple + Warm White (1:3). When dry use the liner brush and stroke a few thin short strokes from the highlighted end to the middle of the petal. Flower Centers: the sideways centers are shaded at the bottom (where they meet the petals) with Dark

Chocolate. On the full fl owers; fl oat around the outer edge. Also shade the recessed centers with Dark Chocolate. Use the Script liner brush and dab tiny dots of Antique Gold around the recessed centers. Add more dots with Antique Gold + Warm White (1:2). Add a few fi nal dots of Warm White.

Pole: Shade with Dark Chocolate under the sign and at the very bottom of the pole. Deepen with Soft Black if necessary. Highlight with Moon Yellow a few places in the center of the pole. Flower Buds: Shade along bottom edge of buds with Dark Chocolate. Paint the circle centers with Hauser Light Green + Warm White (1:3). Highlight the very tops with Warm White. Paint the tiny petals with Royal Purple + Warm White (3:1). Highlight the tops by adding more Warm White to the mix. Pumpkins: Shade along the tops, along the bottoms and where each of the bumps recess with Burnt Or-ange. Deepen with Burnt Sienna. Use the #8 fl at and highlight in the centers of each “bump” section with Pumpkin + Antique Gold (1:1). Brighten the highlight in a smaller area with Moon Yellow. Add a little Warm White to Moon Yellow and add a fi nal highlight glint to each section. Pumpkin Stems: Paint the top “cut” section with Dark Chocolate. Shade the grooves in the stems and across the bottom where it meets the pumpkin, with Dark Chocolate. Highlight with Raw Sienna + Warm White, along the tops and on the outside of the grooves.

Bucket: Shade the bucket along the two outside edges, along the bottom and the inside of the top. Also shade the handle fi xture (on the ground) using the Script liner brush. Highlight along the top edge and down the center of the bucket with Driftwood + Warm White (1:3). Highlight the handle fi xture too. Lighten all highlights with Warm White.

Acorns: Shade Acorn tops where they meet the bot-toms with Soft Black. Highlight across the top with Dark Chocolate + Warm White (1:1). Shade the acorn bottom down the two sides with Dark Chocolate. Highlight in the center with Raw Sienna + Warm White (1:2). Add more Warm White to mix and brighten a bit more.

Wood Block: On the top of the block shade Dark Chocolate following the guide lines on the pattern. Highlight Antique Gold, then again with Moon Yellow.3

Bottom of block is Shaded with Soft Black, down both sides and along the split lines in the bark. Highlight with Dark Chocolate + Warm White (1:1) down the op-posite side of the split lines in the bark.

Leaves: The leaves are shaded down the center veins, along the base into the stem, along some of the curves and where one leaf is underneath another. Use Dark Chocolate on all the leaves. They should be subdued, not bright.Highlight the leaves on the opposite side of the veins and where the leaves have tips or sharp edges. Or-ange leaves = use Pumpkin then again with Burnt Orange + Warm White. Red leaves = use Pumpkin then again with Cherry Red + a touch of Warm White.Yellow leaves = use Moon Yellow then again with Moon Yellow + Warm White. Green Leaf = use Hauser Green + Warm White, then again by adding more Warm White to mix.

Lettering: Paint the word “Greetings” using the Script liner brush and Hauser Light Green. It may take two coats to get it deep enough. Scrolling Vines & fl ower stems: Mix Hauser Light Green + Warm White (1:2), use the Script liner brush and paint the vines. Where the vine overlaps the sign board stroke over with Hauser Light Green. Anywhere the vines need more punch (brightness) add more Warm White to the mix and stroke over.

Background: Use Hauser Light Green and fl oat beside some of the elements; under the sign, to the left of the bottom pumpkin, to the bottom right of the top pump-kin and down the right side of the bucket, above the crow’s head and beside some of the scrolls. Wash some Dark Chocolate into the ground area for variation.

When completely dry, iron the canvas again by setting your iron on a light, NO STEAM setting and covering the banner with a piece of brown paper and ironing on top of the brown paper. If you did not use fabric medium during painting, apply one coat of Clear Glaze Medium for protection. The banner is intended for inside use only.
