When local artist Ally Burguieres opened herFrench Quarter gallery three years ago, shecould not have anticipated becoming a staplein the new parent community. “I was shockedto realize how much my art resonated withyoung mothers and fathers,” the thirty-yearold artist says. “My work has always focusedon animals and nostalgia, and I think newparents get excited to share art that is meaningful and sentimental with their children.” Burguieres’s Notebook Series, a collection of large-scale paintings designed tolook like drawings on looseleaf paper, remindsart lovers of school days spent sketching anddoodling. Her newest venture — a line of onesies, toddler tees, and adult clothingcreated under the name Cocoally —transforms her sweet animals and sentimentalimages into wearable art. The name Cocoally is a combination of the artist’s first name,Ally, and the name of her rescue Chihuahua (and constant companion), Cocoa.

“The purity and innocence animals embody is one of my favorite inspirations,”Burguieres says. “To me, animals and children display the same curiosity, eagerness, andlove of life that translates beautifully into art.” Cocoally clothes feature many of theanimals and images her collectors have come to love, along with some new patternsexclusive to the Cocoally line. “I’m playing around with patterned scarves for the momsand dads,” Burguieres says. Many of these patterns complement the baby onesies andtoddlers tees, offering parents a chance to playfully coordinate with their children. “Beinga new parent is a such a fun time,” Burguieres adds. “It’s a time to enjoy life, sharemoments, and create family bonds.”

Cocoally is available in Gallery Burguieres at 736 RoyalStreet. Select styles can also be found at Ragdoll at 818Royal Street, Nola Potter at 240 Pelican Avenue onAlgiers Point, and top boutiques around New Orleans.
