Saturday Morning Classes6:00-6:30 am—Meditation ................................................................................. Mike Chen

With Clean Food Comes Clear Thinking: After waking early and tuning in to our favorite wake-up song, we sit down to meditate. Our Ohsawa-style camp experience indicates that time speeds up for us during these few days. Hardly surprising—we notice the difference right away in our metabolism. Meditation serves as an excellent counterpoint to this increased speed. Voilà, yin and yang! No previous experience required. Open to all styles. With clear thinking comes clean food!

6:45-8:00 am—Qigong ..................................................................................... Shirley TungQigong is Chinese Traditional exercises for cure and prevention. The daily focus is to clear blockages ( that inhibit full health) in our meridians. The exercises facilitate openness to energy with what is called the “Basic Eight.” We will further enhance energy with “Rejuvenation” ex-ercises as taught by Grand Master Hong Liu.

6:45-8:00 am—Pilates Mat Class ............................................................... Saci McDonaldCome and enjoy a well-rounded workout. You will gain strength, flexibility and focus, the per-fect combo to set you up for a fabulous day at Camp Sylvester. Bring a yoga mat, wear comfort-able clothing and dress in layers.

9:15-9:45 am—Workshop: Cornellia’s Chanting ............................................ Mike Chen Cornellia Aihara taught traditional Japanese chanting under the canopy of the trees and sky for many years at French Meadows. Our summer camp experience filled with hopefulness. Evoking this during the day—and forever—comes in the form of the Buddhist Heart Sutra, chanted in Japanese. In humility, we ask the Universe for enlightenment—that is, the overcoming of ignorance of all sentient beings. With Shinto chants, we ask for blessings —we include campers, staff, the local residents, even the ants! As primitive as it gets, we express our thanks out loud for the universal gifts. And using kototama chants, we harmonize ourselves and each other. Come, get your blessings!

10:00-11:30 am—Health and Joy Yoga ..................................................... Patricia BeckerClasses will focus on proper alignment to bring your body back into balance. We will practice and playfully create greater strength, flexibility and stamina that helps us feel better in and out. Each class will have a new sequence of poses to open up and lovingly explore different areas of our body! Deep breathing practices and short meditations will often be included. We will occasionally utilize partner poses to assist each other, to help build body awareness and have fun. Patricia will happily give students individual assistance upon need or request.

10:00-11:30 am— Workshop: Seven Laws & Twelve Theorems .................... Mike ChenA workshop designed for participants to teach Ohsawa’s 19 statements of Oriental yin-yang theory (1963). Ohsawa cautions students that a physical practice such as a macrobiotics can be dangerous without an instructional philosophy. Note that the Ohsawan formulations and the subsequent interpretations of Michio, Herman, and others are not at all the same. Famously, Ohsawa gives parameters of thinking instead of getting into a lot of description. Questions and answers. No strenuous exercise.

Saturday Afternoon Classes2:00-3:30 pm—Six Most Powerful Acupressure Power Points .............. Michael Rossoff

Qi is the engine of life. All body/mind problems are rooted in some degree of qi energy imbalance or “stuckness.” This class will explain the basic nature of body energies based on ancient Chinese medicine’s meridian system. You will learn 6 acu-points that are on the arms and legs, and how to properly massage them. Most importantly you will learn the effects of these points on physical and emotional well-being, along with when and how to use them in daily self-care. This can stimulate greater self-healing throughout our body-mind-spirit realms. You will learn where these points are located, how to properly massage them and why they are so special.

2:00-3:30 pm—Cooking Demo: Quick Menus for Busy Times ................ Sheri DeMarisFood shopping, cooking, and cleaning your kitchen can be very time consuming especially if you have other responsibilities like family, work, or other activities. This session will focus on energy, immune function, and digestion. Please arrive with clean hands and feet. Note: Kerry’s classes are inspired by Macrobiotic Barefoot Shiatsu as developed by Shizuko Yamamoto. All classes feature working with partners in applying Shiatsu with our hands and our feet. Classes will also include how to access and massage different areas of our own bodies through stretching and direct pressure. We will discuss certain dietary tips that can help free up the blocked energy in our bodies that can cause tightness and pain. All of the classes are non-sequential, allowing you to drop in on any of them without prior experience or knowledge.

10:00-11:30 am—The Healthy Heart: Perspectives ................................ Michael RossoffSummer is the season for Heart in Chinese medicine, when Heart receives its greatest renewal for the year. However, summer is also the time when Heart is most vulnerable to injuries, especially due to excessive heat and excessive emotions. From the physiology of our four-chambered heart to our emotional associations with it, the heart is pivotal to our health. According to Oriental medicine, your heart not only pumps blood but also regulates and carries all emotions, governs consciousness and helps sleep. A healthy heart is essential for true happiness, from spiritual calm to emotional enthusiasm. Topics will include cholesterol, statin drugs, blood pressure, and foods and exercises to help strengthen the heart.

Numerology is especially useful in understanding relationships and compatibility, money issues, and the opportunities and trends in your life. 2:00-3:30 pm—Cooking Demo: Eating While It’s Hot .................................... Julia FerréSummers are sizzling and recipes need to be adjusted. Days or weeks of heat can exhaust anyone’s interest in preparing real meals. 4:00-5:30 pm—Your Physiology Doesn’t Lie .................................................... Bob LigonSymptoms, from a minor ache/pain to a serious pathology are the physiological manifestation of a deeper energetic disharmony. We can suppress those symptoms with medications and interventions and be deceived into thinking we are “cured.” However, if the underlying disharmony remains, another symptom will arise. Our physiology cannot be fooled. The truth conveyed by one’s physiology can be used to understand one’s underlying condition and utilized to find a true cure.

4:00-5:30 pm—Stepping on People .................................................................. Kerry LoebIn this class we will learn how to use our feet to apply shiatsu massage to others. This will include work on the shoulders, back and legs, feet and arms, along with various stretching techniques. NOTE: Come with clean feet if you want to experience the massage.

Message from Kerry Loeb: These Shiatsu classes are designed for people who have never practiced Shiatsu or for those wanting to re-tune their skills. It is my hope and intention that after each class, the person will know enough to help a friend/loved one feel better by the use of their newly-acquired skill.

8:00-10:00 pm—Keynote: Why Women Live Longer than Men ........... Michael RossoffOn average, women in the U.S. live five to eight years longer than men do. Do you ever wonder why? What factors influence this difference? Scientists credit genetics, others say women are less aggressive and less coflict-prone, and some claim women take better care of themselves. Women’s longevity has deeper meaning than these reasons. This lecture will use an Oriental medicine perspective to explore the energetic differences between men and women and offer practical suggestions to help men narrow the longevity gap, including valuable self-care practices for any age.

2:00-3:30 pm—Heaven and Nirvana: Duality and Nonduality .................... Alex PappasAlex’s book Heaven and Nirvana is an exciting new way to view religion and spiritual paths: comparing the duality of Salvation to the nonduality of Liberation. He will present the following questions plus those you bring to the discussion: What is duality and nonduality? Why are most religions and spiritual paths dualistic journeys of salvation or nondualistic ones of liberation? Why is the spiritual path and philosophy of George Ohsawa considered nondual? What is the difference between salvation and liberation? What are the roles of karma and reincarnation? Attend to learn more about this interesting subject and join in as you wish..

2:00-3:20 pm—Cooking Demo: Best Dishes for Potlucks ........................ Jeanne GrossetA potluck is a great way to meet people and connect with your local community. Nowadays many social or themed potlucks are available in cities large and small, but to be a macrobian (person who lives and eats the macrobiotic way) we need to be aware of what vegetarian and vegan people add to the mix, and what are the best dishes all can enjoy. Sanae will give examples of what to prepare to impress your friends and make extra for yourself…a win-win!

4:00-5:30 pm—One Thing at a Time .................................................................. Bob LigonMulti-tasking has become the norm. My belief is that multi-tasking disperses, dilutes, and thus weakens one’s Qi—a risky condition. We are vulnerable to illness and injury when Qi is weakened. The modern world pulls us in many directions at the same time. This session will be an exercise in offsetting that pull. Guiding consciousness to a single task, focusing the Qi, can be a form of protection. I’ll present my thoughts on this matter and I invite everyone to share your ideas.

4:00-5:30 pm—Internal Organ Massage ......................................................... Kerry LoebIn this final class, we will continue working with our hands and doing internal organ massage. In this work, we will learn the location of several organs and experience how to improve their function through Shiatsu, diet and self-massage. Please arrive with clean hands and feet.

8:00-10:00 pm—Keynote: George and Michio Were Right ....................... Jessica PorterHow the yin and yang of gender is being revealed through current neuroscience.

10:00-11:30 am—Find Your Purpose ................................................................. Bob LigonOne of the primary karmic challenges is to discover one’s purpose for incarnation. If you know your purpose, everything you do will make sense. If you don’t, life can seem like an endless struggle to simply survive. We will discuss how to know your purpose in this life, what life with purpose looks and feels like and ways to cultivate that purpose in all areas of your life.

The first half of the class will be taught by Kerry who will demonstrate effective Shiatsu stretching techniques (as taught by Shizuko Yamamoto) to practice on each other. The class will then segue into partner Acro Yoga. Lucia will focus on the therapeutic side of Acro Yoga, also drawing upon partner yoga and Thai massage techniques. Friday Morning Classes6:00-6:30 am—Meditation .................................................................................

6:45-8:00 am—Qigong ..................................................................................... Shirley TungQigong is Chinese Traditional exercises for cure and prevention. The exercises facilitate openness to energy with what is called the “Basic Eight.” We will further enhance energy with “Rejuvenation” ex-ercises as taught by Grand Master Hong Liu.

9:15-9:45 am—Workshop: Cornellia’s Chanting ............................................ Mike Chen Cornellia Aihara taught traditional Japanese chanting under the canopy of the trees and sky for many years at French Meadows. Our summer camp experience filled with hopefulness.

10:00-11:30 am—How Healing Are You? .................................................... Jessica PorterThese days, we look on charts to determine our health—how is my weight, my cholesterol, my BMI? But some of these indicators were only discovered, or invented, in the last century. Can they really be the end-all and be-all of our health? What, exactly, is “health,” anyway? In this class, Jessica takes us through a Health Quiz that will help us to assess our health, not only physically, but emotionally and even spiritually. You are more than your cholesterol!

Friday Afternoon Classes

2:00-3:20 pm Lecture—Baseline: Food Analysis ............................................. Mike ChenOhsawan instruction encourages us to chew meditatively and to meditate thoroughly. Where does this put us? Evidently, a very Zen moment! But what to meditate on? Oh, of course...our condition! By keeping a list of each meal’s ingredients, we can identify our momentary likes and dislikes. Doing so, we can then consciously shift and adapt our food and environmental choices as we focus on the year ahead. We ask ourselves the essential yin-yang question: Where am I coming from? Where am I going to? The answers can help us change our condition and maintain our natural balance.

2:00-3:20 pm—Cooking Demo: Tips for Making Essential Foods ......... Jeanne GrossetMacrobiotic principles provide a vital foundation when we are learning something new about healthy eating and living. In this class, Sanae will provide practical tips for those on the path of healing. Perhaps you simply need an overhaul or review of the fundamentals. A return to the goodness of simple, basic foods and adapting them to our modern hectic lives might be just the trick to jumpstart your healthy lifestyle. Great for newbies and everyone else too!

4:00-5:30 pm—The 2016 Closing Panel ......................................... Bob Ligon, ModeratorEvery question answered! Here’s the chance to ask the one question you’ve been unable to answer. All available presenters will answer your questions about health, happiness, and so on. Come prepared with your questions and we’ll go through as many as possible. Most years this Q&A session turns into a lively not-to-be-missed discussion. Be there.

4:00-5:30 pm—Macro Acro Yoga ..................................................................... Lucia LoebAcro Yoga is a partner-based movement, incorporating the foundations of yoga and partner acrobatics. The Shiatsu/Macro Acro with Lucia and Kerry on Thursday focuses on the therapeutics of Acro Yoga. This class will touch on therapeutics as well while also incorporating more strengthening partner work. We will explore some of the basics of Acro Yoga while offering a challenge for the more advanced student. No experience necessary for this class. It will be accessible to all levels. Come in comfortable clothes, prepared to work with partners. Be ready to have fun!

8:00-10:00 pm—Closing Circle ....................................................................... All CampersOur final gathering! We will thank each other for another great camp and (briefly) voice what we learned and will take into the world to share.
