Explore Arles'medieval streets and city walls and be sure to look outacross the surrounding countryside to what van Goghfound so enchanting. It's off to La Camargue, France's"wild west," where cowboys tend to herds of bulls destinedfor bullfighting rings in Spain. Although they stayed for less than a century, theykept busy during those years... as you’ll see on yourvisit to the impressive Palais des Papes that they builtfor themselves during this morning’s sightseeing in thiskey medieval city. During your time on a walking tourhere this morning, look for the theatre and temple theyleft behind, as well as other sights straight out of history.You'll also travel to Mont Pipet for extensive views of thesurrounding countryside. Day 8 Mâcon & Cluny Horses, an abbey & moreYour riverboat arrives in Mâcon on the Saône River thismorning, for exploration in Cluny. During the reign ofCharlemagne (742 - 814), monastic influences inspired agreat revival in art, education and culture; today you'llvisit one of the great monasteries of the period when youtour the great Benedictine Abbey of Cluny. Founded in910, it was at the center of this major monastic reformmovement and was also the largest Christian building inthe world until the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica inRome. You'll also visit Haras National de Cluny (France'snational equestrian center), which dates back to the 19thcentury, to learn about its high-quality thoroughbredstallions. Although its history dates back to thetime of Charlemagne, it has another significant claim tofame – this is considered the birthplace of photography.So you have local inventor Nicéphore Niépce, whostarted it all with several photographic firsts right here inthe 1820s, to thank for the great photos of the town’sRomanesque churches and other monuments you’ll takeduring a walking tour – and you'll savor local culinaryofferings on a guided tasting tour of some of Chalon-SurSaône’s noted food shops, from an artisan chocolateboutique to a mustard shop. Day 10 - Tournus & a day in beautiful BurgundyAfter cruising the Saône overnight, ms Emerald calls onTournus this morning, from which you'll head out toexplore the beautiful wine producing region of southernBurgundy, where history lies around every corner (thiswas a major crossroads during Roman times), andvineyards are everywhere. Picture in your mind what atypical French vineyard looks like... and then view themost amazing landscape that surrounds you for miles andmiles. Vineyards, gently rolling hills, orchards, red-tiledfarmhouses, medieval cathedrals, the occasional villageto stop in... and historic country estates like the17thcentury Château de Cormatin, which you'll exploreon a visit today.
