he mountains of Western North Carolina have many stories to tell. Countless yarns have been spun about this rugged landscape. Some give voice to the streams and rivers that once

marked time and offered passage through the Appalachian Mountains, while others follow the fascinating journeys of the people who settled this region.

At first, these stories were passed on by the crackling light of a fire. But as more people were drawn to the hills, a rich tradition of storytelling through music and the written word was born. Soon the echo of the river rushing through the valley was accompanied by the sounds of guitars and fiddles, with bluegrass taking hold as the soundtrack of the mountains.

Today, the land is more inspiring than ever, due in large part to the stories that have accumulated over the years to impart a deeper richness to the soil. The stately oak and pine are taller than ever, guarding the countryside that remains largely unspoiled. Through it all, the river remains the common thread that unites the past with the present.

This is the story of French Broad Crossing, a mountain community that takes its name from the legendary tributary that flows through the property, winding its way north and west and providing the inspiration for newcomers to this celebrated countryside. A deep respect for the land – its beauty, its history and its value, all preserved for future generations – is the central theme of this exciting new story.

rench Broad Crossing is a 750-acre community that has been carefully planned to have minimal impact on the environment, with all homesites blended into

the existing terrain. Guidelines ensure all home designs are mindful of the natural setting, creating a themed community as timeless as its surroundings.

In addition, nearly 230 acres of French Broad Crossing are protected by a conservation easement. This prevents any future development of the ridges surrounding the community, ensuring the views and legends are preserved not only for generations to come, but for an eternity.

Preserving nature now and forever

“Here are plants and shrubs of blazing beauty: the woods azalea that burns orange and yellow and crimson along the green hills, that has been called one of the purest examples ‘of the plant life of another age left in the world today.’”

- Wilma Dykeman, The French Broad

“Rivers run through our history and folklore, and link us as a people. They nourish and refresh us and provide a home for dazzling varieties of fish and wildlife and trees and plants of every sort.”

- Charles Kuralt, The Magic Rivers

he French Broad is the longest river in Western North Carolina and one of the oldest in the world. Its waters –

which vary from calm to brisk as they wind into Tennessee – have born witness to much of the folklore that comprises the rich history of the Southern Highlands.

The banks of the French Broad were first settled by the Cherokee Indians and later visited by Hernando de Soto. The English who followed named the river for the French settlers along its Tennessee banks. More than 200 years later, the nation’s first government granted the surrounding land to veterans of the Revolutionary War. Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland also made their homes here because the beautiful countryside reminded them of their homeland.

Each of these peoples has left its mark on the area that is now known as Madison County. Thanks to them, every hill and every stream has a tale to tell, and French Broad Crossing’s dedication to preserving this land will ensure that the stories are shared for generations to come.
