The Maritime Museum is the home to the winning America’s Cup yacht, Australia II, an Oberon class submarine- HAMS Ovens, Jon Sanders’ Parry Endeavour and many other iconic vessels from WA’s maritime history.

Maritime Museum

The new WA Maritime Museum is a world-class museum telling the story of a Western Australia’s Maritime history. It is perfectly located, where Fremantle and the ocean meet. It was constructed by Cox and Bailey Woodland, and was opened to the public in 2002.

Maritime Museum

Perched on the Indian’s Ocean’s shore, the Western Australian Museum-Maritime is symbolic of Fremantle’s past, present and future as a coastal city and port.

The museum houses several unique galleries that Explore WA’s relationship with the sea. From leisure boats to commercial pearl luggers, the Museum inspires visitors to discover WA’s affinity with the ocean.

Many historic buildings were restored for the America’s Cup, which Fremantle hosted in 1987. The Challenger Harbour was developed for the event and has remained a fine addition to the city.

Round House Round House

The Fremantle Round House is the oldest building still standing in Western Australia. It is located at Arthur Head in Fremantle.

The Round House is the first permanent building to be built in the Swan River Colony and was completed in 1830.

The Fremantle Round House was intended to be used as a prison. It had eight cells and it also had a jailer’s residence. All cells opened out into a central courtyard.

The Fremantle Round House structure is based on a Panopticon design. The Panopticon is a type of prison designed by philosopher Jeremy Bentham.

Private labours were employed to complete the construction, which took six months.

The Round House was the first building to be built in the Swan River Colony. However, soon after this time other buildings and structures were constructed.

The Fremantle Whaling Company constructed a jetty on Bathers Beach, directly in front of the Round House, in 1837. Soon afterwards, in 1838, a tunnel was excavated under the Round House to allow whalers to unload products onto transportation.
