Right, before you try out this little number, stick on some safetyequipment, it's quite a hairy trick. Ride into it like a Decade (you mustbe able to do these already), and as your front wheel reaches the topof the ramp pull up on thebars and do the decade, the same way asyou would on the ground. Then put your left foot on the frame, by theseat post, the other on the pedal and simply ride out. ln case you'rewondering why there's no number 4, THAT'S on page 9.

lHead Protecti onFACE FACTS: lf you ride and push your riding by learningand improving, lometime you're going to Grash. lt could be

out on a traik, on a jump. or halfpipe or quarter pipe'

Some crashes are simple, and you may only land on your

hands or knees, which can be easily protected by gloves orpads. But some crashes are biggies, MAJOR slams' Take

itre guy riding on the Halfords Team at the Poole UKBFA

National in 1986. He overcooked an air, tensed up, rose toabout ten feet out and dropped like a stone onto his head'

But his only injuries were that he knocked the wind out ofhimself, traâ tré not been wearing a Bell Moto 3 his injuriescould have been far, far worse. A simple concussion can

lead to complications. Racing also has a history of crashes,

in which thà rider has been uninjured due to wearing a

helmet. Crashes may not always be the riders fault how-ever, bike components can fail too. One time in Holland'Carlo Griggs' fiigtrt crank spindle broke mid air. Needless

to say, hé was suitaUly protected' So, risk takers need pro-

tection, and crashes can happen at any time. But don't be

put off buying a helmet by saying. 'Man, €50 for a

lrelmet! tto-wày, that's far too expensive", if you crash

and land on your head, you can always buy a new helmet,

but you can îever buy a new head. A helmet is probably Çç. =,*the best investment you (an make and this Product Test is 'V

One of the best full face helmetsavailable. Made by Bell, with a builtin peak and goggle recess. Helmets ofthis quality feature air venting, fullfibreglass construction, washableliner, and great ergonomic design.Another full face to look out for is

the Bell Moto 4, just check out anY ofthe Skyway or Haro ramp teams andyou'll see a Moto 4. Both the Bell andthe JT come in a range of colours andsizes. Full face helmets offer the bestprotection, but may restrict yourview. They weigh slightly more thanopen faces. Prices for this standard ofhelmet are in the t100 range, notcheap, but these are the besthelmets. Other full face helmets comefrom Dyno and Gt, as well as AGVand Yes Racing. Full face lids are thebest for ramps and BMX racing.

This is just a basic Auide, it's best whenbuying a helmet to visit the store andtry a few out. They should fit snug, and should never be loose. The shopassistant will most probably be helpfulland offer guidance in buying the right

bike shop that sells helmets, then anymotorbike shop will supply you withwhat you need, especially motorcross

BELL PRO PIUSOpen face helmets offer the best visibilty, buthave no protection for the face. This is not such

a problem for flatland, but for BMX considerusing either a face mask or a mouthtrap, buteven then, the protection won't be as high as afull face. Bell's open face helmet here is the ProPlus, with adjustable peak, lightweight shell, comfortable liner and padded chin strap. The JT

Seen on this classic pieceof footage is a beeeaaauuuutifultrack (take note U.K. track people),dead fast racing and many foreigners.U.K. presence is evident, especiallycheck the John Johns interview.Other interviews rank somewhere be-tween boring to completely hilarious.Racing is as ever brilliant, and there iseven a freestyle demo from Rich

Sigur etc. A great tape. The othervideo is the lrvine World Cup OfBMX, which is a bit of a joke sincethere were only U.5. riders racing. Abig Pro purse attracted big names, racing on the biggest set of doubles I

have ever seen. The racing is O.K.,the track is long, but the freesÇle isquite good, includes a short bit onthe T.O.L. at Wiz Pubs. Another inter-esting bit is the crashes, all fun andnothing serious. About E2O each.Marks on ten? Orlando, 9. lrvine, 6.(Hot Wheels)

IBHaro bikes have long since repre-sented The Freestyle Bike. The Mas-ter was the first ever freestyle framemade, designed by Bob Haro, whoused two top tubes for a platform,an old Torker influence. And thiswas years before the sport of free-style had any organisation, beforesplit groups, before 2 Hip contests, before freestyle was in the mag-azines. Noq almost a decade later, freestyle has come a loooong way,but has Haro also advanced andkept up with the times?

Yes.Basically, if you want a bike that

represents freestyle in the late '80s,then get a Haro bike. lt's as simpleas that. A Haro is designed from thetyres (Haro multisurface, 20x1,75)up. Wheels? Your choice of eitherAraya 48 spoke rims laced into alloyhigh flange hubs, or a pair of provenSkyway Tuff 2's. Next up, the dropouts. The rear platforms are unique;the drop outs are bent at 90 de-grees, strengthened, gnurled andlittle traction studs, similar to DXpedals, are welded on, making avery tunctional rear platform. Rearpegs will increase this standing areafor flatland, but the whole platformis out of the way if you're intoramps. The lorks are cromo, taperedand feature flip up pegs halfway up.More of a fork platform than a forkpeg. At the headtube a wrap aroundgusset looks clean and functional, strong. On the Master, the top tubesare the famous two tube variety, yetthe tubes bend closer together nearthe headtube. The Sport has a twointo one top tube pioneered by Haro,a single tube is met by the two ex-tended seat stays about six inchesfrom the seat clamp. The stays taperdown to the rear drop out. On thechain stays, bosses for AD990brakes are on the upper side of thetubes. This means the cable goesthrough the seat tube, with an adju-ster for dialling in. Cable guides onthe down tube direct the cable to theGyro, a prime spinning device. Justabove the Gyro, a Haro stem, withcromo shaft clamps the bars; Haro

the AD990 at the rear, and the DiaCompe Nippon on the front. Safestopping, that's to be sure. To makethings go, Anlun cromo cranks, aHaro Unidirectional chainwheel, KMCchain and Suntour freewheel comeon both Master and Sport. Sittingdown, a Viscount Dominator seat, with a virtually unbendable Haro flu-ted post, and Peregrine seat clampkeep things tight.

And that's it. Riding a Haro iscake. The Master performs onground, with it's sharper steeringand quicker all round handling. Thetop tubes provide an excellent plat-form, though here paint may fadefrom shoe contact, a problem solvedby grip tape application. The Sportis more of a ramp bike, it's a littleslow on ground, but U.K. Haro riderDavid Frame seems to have no pro-blem. The longer wheelbase bestsuits vert, and the result is a smoothand clean ramp bike. The forks havea good rake to them, and the forkpegs fold down to give a perfectplatform here. All round, the Harowillplease.

So, who can give proof to theHaro's capabilities? How about theHaro Freestyle Team: ln the U.S.,Brian Blyther (Sport) is leading the 2Hip Vert series at the moment, RonWilkerson is organising contestsand ripping on a Sport also, RickMoliterno (Master) is winning AFAcontests on both flat and overall,Joe Gruttola (Master) is one of thetop am flatlanders in the AFA,Dennis McCoy (Master) and JoeJohnson (Sport) still ride Haros des-pite being unsponsored by Haro,Dave Nourie (Master) is a seriouslyunder-rated Pro flatlander, and MattHoffman (Sport), well what more canbe said? At Arizona (one week afterbeing out of his cast), he opened hisAFA run with a Step Thru at an ho-nest 12 foot. Sick. In the U.K., JasonDavies (Master) is taking home themoney in Masterclass, David Frame(Sport; is dominating his age groupon both flat and ramp, and StevenGeall (Spod) is winning ramps atNationals after only six months com-peting in freestyle.

So, there you have it, the Haroteam packs a hefty punch. And allriding Haro bikes. lf proof is neededabout the quality of Haro Bicycles, just look at the Haro Team.

This is Jason Davies, and this iswhat he has to say on a sunny dayin June about himself, freestyle, trends, and the Haro Master.

MARK: OK, this is the Jason Daviestape, Haro 88.5 test. Speak up.JASON: HELLOOO!!!MARK: Good. Have you lived inBristol all your life?JASON: Yep, well, I moved toAustralia when I was about Imonths old, for about 8 months, then moved back, and that's it.MARK: Age?JASON:18.MARK: Habits?JASON: Eating, sleeping.MARK: Fears?JASON: None at all.MABK: So, what's your job?JASON: Panel beating. Body workon cars and stuff. I fix'em up.MARK: Who do you ride with inBristol?JASON: The Sewards once a week,Paul Brown most days, Larry Bullcomes here once a week. At theweekends, Tucker, Howard, Dale.MARK: Where do you ride inBristol?JASON: Car parks, precincts, Lock-leaze, and when we get the rampout. Wherevet.MARK: How long have you beenriding?JASON: Freestyle, lour years. Likethe summer of '84, I thought "This iscool". But I got a bike at the end of'83 and iust messed about, I neverraced.MARK: How long have you been onHaro?JASON: Since last November. I wason Skyway, but I was buggin' Pete(Hawkins) to get us on Haro. Sowhen we went to the Haro factorywe had a talk with them, and arran-ged to run a team.MARK: Name the fastest tricks youcan do.JASON: Just combinations andstuff. Chuck it around.MARK: Are your tricks pretty con-sistent?JASON: Yeah. There's a wholebunch of stuff I'm trying to learn. lt

bugs because for the next comp I

won't have too much, it's going totake some time, depending onwhether the tricks come quick ornot. But most of the tricks I do arepretty consistent, because I practicethem allnight.MARK: What do you think are thetrends in freestyle at the moment?JASON: lt's all rolling, any wheel, any direction. Just rolling.MABK: Do you think that willchange?JASON: Yeah. ln America there'squite a few routines that are justlame to watch because it's all rol-ling, where the oustanding peoplehave some type of hopping tricks, some good rolling tricks, a load ofconnections and links, and they'refast and smooth, it's like total vari-ation, instead of just rolling around.Like some people will roll a trick, ride back up, roll, back up, and justkeep doing that. Moliterno, he rollsall the hardest combinations pos-sible, links, he's fast and smpoth, he

does everything. At the moment it'siust do as many rolling tricks hard, but it's affecting people's actualroutines that they put together. Butit will change round to a bit ofeverything.MARK: How do you prepare lor acontest?JASON: Just practice the tricks I'mdoing at the moment, that I like, andthen see which tricks link good, andthen get a little link group and then I

sit down and think, "Do this here, soI come out oi ihai so I can go intothis", and link them all up.MARK: Do you get nervous?JASON: Sort of. I do, but then I'mnot. I think "Man I gotta ride good",but then I think "l can pull it all off"and just go out and do it. Somet-imes you can panic a trick, and youkeep doing it faster and faster, andscrewing it up, because you're rush-ing.MARK: Who do you respect in yourage group?JASON: Larry, because he's got

tons of original stuff. Scott Mac-Donald. Who else is there?MARK: Gary Neale?JASON: He's good, but I don't dighim. Allyn Withington is cool.MARK: What about on ramps?JASON: Greg (Guillotte), (Jason)Ellis, that's about it.MARK: Who would be tough to rideagainst if there were no age groups?JASON: For overall, Carlo and Can-ning. So nent year when l'm goingPro; there's Canning, and Carlo willstay in Master. Anybody else? Notso much on overall, which I ratemore, but individually, on flatland;there's tons of good people, likeFergus (Heron), Oliver Matthews inpractise.ilARK: Why do you rate getting theoverall more than getting an indi-vidual group?JASON: Because it's harder. You'rea better rider if you can ride rampsto a certain standard and flat to acertain standard, instead of just flator ramps. Like, if I had to ride one ofthe two I'd just ride ramps. Flat-land's cool but you can get into astate of just doing the same tricks, but ramps is just a doss.MARK: Do you rate contests?JASON: Yeah, they're cool. They'refun.MARK: What about demos andtours and stuff?JASON: Demos are rad, but gettingto them takes forever. Comps areO.K. lor getting to, but you like wantto get back as soon as you can, be-cause you're miles away.IIARK: Had any bad slams?JASON: I've bruised my kidney acouple of times, but that's mainlyfrom mucking about. I've neverbroken a bone or anything. ScottFreeman's road is lethal. lt's realgravely I've got millions of scars onmy legs and hands.MARK: What about America, con-tests and stuff, are they any good?JASOil: Yep. You get way nervous, because everyone around you islike, god, because they're American, and their standard is so muchhigher. lt's not that bad, because ifyou go over there, and just do agood variety of tricks, and don'ttouch, and you're not sketchy, youplace real good. You don't have todo all the new tricks, you can have abit of old, whatever. You just ride toyour potential.MARK: How often do you work onyour bike?JASON: Never. Paul Brown's mymechanic.ÙIARK: Do you invent tricks?JASON: I've invented some, littletricks. I've thought up some tricksthat have been invented, like the Un-lookback, never did it but I just im-agined it. Someone should do aMiami Hopper Fakie.IIARK: \,Vhat about plans in thefuture?JASON: Just keep going the same.Ride.MARK: Are you going to get a car?JASON: Yeah, when I pass my test.As long as it's fast enough, I'll getanything, so long as the bikes fit in.

MARK: Anything you'd tike to sayabout the Haro?JASON: lt's bitchen. I'd stiil rideone if I ever left the team or gotsacked or something. I've alwaysridden one. There's just somethingabout them, you just can't beat aHaro.MARK: When you clip your toenailsdo you put the bits in the bin or let'em fly around the room?JASON: Fly around the room, thenpick them up. hahaha!

Steven Geall is the new man on theHaro U.K. Team. He's not a nameyou may have heard of much, buthe's come from riding in local con-tests to winning the National Tiile inless than six months in his agegroup, 17 Plus Ramps. He rides aSport.MARK: OK. Steven Geall.STEVE: Hello.IIAFK: Where do you live?STEVE: ln the sticks. Hordle, inHampshire.MABK: Age?STEVE:18IIARK: Habits?STEVE: Null and void. Not saying.haha!iIARK: Who do you ride with loc-ally?STEVE: No-one.MARK: So you don't practice?STEVE: This is true. There's noramps around, and no-one rides.MARK: Where DO you ride?STEVE: Southsea. Lees at Romseysometimes. Crawley sometimes, when I can get there.ilIARK: How long have you beenriding, what is your history?STEVE: About eight years riding, about two years in freestyle. I star-ted racing, I thought that was bor-ing, so I started freestyle.MARK: How many sponsors haveyou had?STEVE: About three.IIARK: Who?STEVE: Haha! I was sponsored byBrian Curtis at first, I was withCurtis for a while. And then, Rick-man, and now by Haro.MABK: Didn't your dad buitdframes?STEVE: Yep, he used to makeCurtis frames and PR frames.MARK: lf you don't practice, wheredo you learn tricks?STEVE: I see it in the books, watching people riding ramps, think"That looks good", then I try it atthe next competition.IUIARK: So really comps are theonly time when you get to ride ser-ious ramps?STEVE: Yep.IUIARK: So what is everybody doingat the moment?STEVE: Big airs. Good flatland.MABK: You don't do flatlandthough?STEVE: No, I want to, but I justcan't do it, I keep hurting myself inthe wrong places.MARK: You do bunnyhops?STEVE: Yeah, rad bunnyhops.MARK: How high?STEVE: Don't knoq I can't tell. I

don't get off and measure them, haha!MARK: Who do you respect in yourage group?STEVE: That nipper on the bluesport, he's pretty good. Sean(Smith), he's good, I rate him. There's that other guy with thestupid peak, David Childs, he's get-ting better on ramps. Everyone'sgetting better.IIARK: What about in the other agegroups?STEVE: There's quite a few. Hoff-man, haha! Griggs, Canning, Ellis. He's good, a lot of styles. Scott Car-roll, Karl Denton's rad as well.MARK: Do you rate demos?STEVE: Yeah, they're rad. Everyonerides for the fun of it, like in com-petitions it's mainly serious. You gofor it more in demos.MARK: How often do you work onyour bike?STEVE: Never.MARK: Do you invent tricks?STEVE: That Un-X-Up thing. youcross your bars round backwardson top of the ramp, because I can'tdo Bar Spin Airs, because myname's not Bob 'Sketchit' Kohl, youjust ride towards the other ramp asfast as you can, get loads of air andcross up the bars, so it looks likeyou're doing a normal air.MARK: How long did it take to learnthat?STEVE: About five minutes.ùIARK: Do you drive?STEVE: I try haha!IIARK: What about music?STEVE: Stuff like Megadeth, An-thrax, Metallica, Bad News, 'causethey're the raddest. Warlock, Walk-ing Rugs, Vicious Rumours, WASBVan Halen.MARK: How do you rate the HaroSport?STEVE: lt's the best bike I've rid-den on ramps for ages. lt's reallycool, the length is just right. Thebars are rad, the low cross bar forCandy Bars. The back end is a bitlong at first, but you get used to it.MARK: ls it good for bunnyhops?STEVE: Yeah, it's cool for bunny-hops.ltlARK: Anything else you'd like tosay?

GEOMETRY AND HANDLING:The Master is renowned for being aflatland bike, which it does an excel-lent job on, but anyone who hasseen Dennis McCoy ride ramps onone can NOT say it's a stranger tovert. lt RIPS on both. MARK: O.K., so the deal wasthis; a Ramp Jam / King OfYert / Halfoipe Contest (call itwhat you like) was happeningat Chingford on Saturday 25thJune. Methinks "That's twodays before deadline, we'regonna have to work our bunsoff to get it in for August." Sohere we are, typing up sometext while the photos arebeing done.KRIS: Hmmm. We awakenedaa the early hour of six tocatch the train at seven. Those new trains are sooooocool. After am few under-ground / train changes wearrived a la Silver St station atl0 where we were supposedto meet Andy Brown at ll, sosome stylers on the trainshowed us to the ramp, a twomile walk, uuuuh. Not manypeople were there at thisstage butJason Ellis was tidi.gthe ramp. Mark's turn to think.MARK: After that incred-ibly knackering walk,Chingford was abundant inLondon locals and a fewvisitors kicking back and re-laxing out. El was graduallyripping more and more as he

related to a new ramp. A bitabout Chingford; it's about 40ft wide in total, with % of itbeing mor€ vertical with 9fttrans and about a foot and abit of vert. The other ,1, iscut down to about 7ft makingan undervert fun section.Quite a vert ramp. Someriders were having probs withthis factor, notably the smallerguys. Practice saw some inter-esting bits combined withsome uninteresting bits.KRIS: 36ft wide. Well notmuch notable happened untilTim Ruck (the organiser)tqned up in his van and pro-vided some music. Other- or-ganiser Greg Guillotte arrivedlate and rode without ahelmet (naughty naughty) get-ting maybe six foot beforelong. El and Greg were theonly ones getting over twofoot out on the large sectionof the ramp. Andy Brown wasthere but didn't ride much dueto a knee rnjury. No-one elsegood turned up either. Someguy who rode the un-vert sec-tion of the ramp got a fewfeet out, every time he rode,

A LOT later thecompstarted...Mark?MARK: Dave Castledine didget over two foot out, as didGT's Mark Atkins, who hadsome impressive Pop Out RollIn manoovs. As well as f80Abubacas to Drop In. A badcrash due to intense snakingin the warrn up period musthave de-tuned him slightly. Iwas slightly disappointed inthe turn out, there are a hellof a lot more vert riders outthere. The comp started withC Group. Not much going onhere, but no doubt the ridersinvolved had a fun time.KRIS: I can't remember anyth-ing about the B group. MarkAtkins, yeah. Well, maybe dueto his bail, he didn't pull hisAbubaca so film was wasteddoing sequences .. . maybe\ile can use em. David Cas-tledine rode well, OK, so heDID get more than 2 foot out,I don't care. And Uprocks,Cancans, & more styleythings too. Some Ching localrode without a helmet andtwisted a foot out on the vertbit after try.ing them about5000 times on the no-vert bit.He also got some Inverts doneon the non vert part. I thinkhis name was Zak, or someth-ing like that. Oh, I see, Markhas fixed it so HE does the Agroup: slime.MARK: Yes, hahaha. AndyBrown dropped out earlier. Hewas cheesed, especially whensome grem told him he was'lame' for not riding. If you'reinjured you don't ride, andyou're not lame. So, entrantsleft were Jason Ellis, GrahamMar[Ieet and Greg Guillotte.Marfleet did some well nicethings on the fun section, mainly Ruff Hop Drops andother lippy stuff. Airs too onthis part, but some peoplecommented that he has riddenbetter. Chingford is Greg's

Hey, this is a test. No stories aboutgoing off to school on your newwonderful scoot and all yo' mateshaving a fun time on it, then afterschool impressing the best piece oftoast with endos so she goes to theend of year party with you, no. So,we tested the Ninja Screamer andthis is what we thought of it. Well, the scoot was collected from Ninjaalong with the other five boxed onesfor the competish. The scooter wehad to test was already fully built upso I didn't have to build it up foronce. Perhaps it would have beenbetter if it had come in a box be-cause seeing it all in one go, fullyglowing in it's clashing colours wassickening. Well, at least you'd getnoticed riding the thing. After re-covering from the initial shock andmy eyes adjusting to the dayglopink/green paint job, it becameapparent that the Ninja people haddone their homework on theScreamer.

Working up . . . the tyres are thefamous 'snakebelly' type patternsand can take a lot of pressure. 55psi in a scooter tyre is a massiveadvantage when it comes to ridingthe thing. The wheels are normal 12% inch jobs. The frame is a lot likethe Pacer in that it had two tubesand square cross pieces, but it isslightly different. Different in the factthat this baby is TIG wetded, whichmeans that the joins are MUCHstronger and inevitably will last lon-ger. Other brands of scooter use aCO2 method which is cheaper inevery sense of the word. The des-igner, Anthony Brereton, wanted theframe to be engineered, not chuckedtogether by a robot. Mmmm. Theplatform is the besi t've seen on astock scooter, a lot wider thannormal ones. The brakes aren't any-thing special, but are drilled andcolour co-ordinated. The graphics allover are HOT. An ACS Rotor is thechosen detangter, but we havefound that they don't work very well.An ACS 55 Slanted stem holds theGT type bars in place. Longer free-style type levers operate the brakeswhile your hands hold Mushroomcopy grips. Oh, I forgot the screw infootstands front and rear.

One thing you'll find in the boxbut won't bolt onto the scoot is theguarantee. lt lasts a whole year andcovers the frame and components, and you won't find it on any otherscooter today. THAT'S how good theScreamer is.ffi# @##

Page 45: Freestyle BMX UK 08 1988 by Bobby

After Mark had taken a few shotsof the unused scooter we set aboutthrashing it. The HP tyres result inFAST scooting with no wash-out orspongyness. The screw in pegs re-sult in hurt ankles so removal tookplace. The head angle is just rightfor airs, plants, and flatland tricks, not too snappy and not too slow.Everyone easily adapted to it, and I

loved it. With all the extra com-ponents it was a touch heavy afterriding my Variflex without frontbrakes n' Rotor, but it's no worry. The front fork standers (when putback in) are just fine for groundmoves, but I prefer axle extenderson the back for easier backyardsetc. The Rotor didn't work too hotespecially when the bars are re-versed, so the grip on the tyrescame in handy for shuffling Backy-ards. lf

apply different grips (A'mes, JiveHandles etc) or perhaps somedonuts. The wide plafform is such agood idea, providing easy replace-ment of feet after no footer jumpsand boosty type stuff. lt could dowith reinforcing on the kicktail as anawkward landing by fat Markcracked it a bit, but it's nothing toworry over.

This is not just another scooter,it's the one I recommend as a stockmachine for this price range. With alittle dialling in this is a really nicepiece of chocolate; so go to yournearest store now and ask for one,and if they don't have one rewardthe nice shop assistant with a goodsound slap. Or, enter the comp inthis ish, or send for one. Don't thankme for recommending this greatscoot to you, just send me money.ha.

Kris remembers the one yearguarantee and simply executes aramp to ramp Manual Boll.

BBMXA NATIONATText N'Photos: Mark Noble

THE I-AST TIME I WAS IN WESTONwas for the first BFA National of1988, when during breaks in thecontest people were outside thesports hall riding round the track, jumping and going back to theirroots. The track was a little primitivethen, with ruts and bricks all overthe place. This time round the trackwas in prime condition for the BBNational. A very technical track, spiralling round in a big clockwiseturn over a bridge then under it, withvirtually no left hand turns. The hillled to a small tabletop, then a set ofdoubles to a big sweeper with alarge step down lump, then carry onround the sweeper, and over twomore speed jumps. Next, you crankhard up the bridge, over the bridge, sit down and coast down the back-side and around a bowled berm, over a steep speed jump, then aright hand berm, a tiny left leadsyou under the bridge, a small speedjump lays between you and the fin-ish line. A good track, but definitelynot built for the power-along-the-straight guys, more for the nippy, technical rider.

This write-up is not going to be anage by age report, no no. lt's what I

found to be interesting during theday.1: The BBMXA run B Finals. Thesegive people a chance to catch up on

points if they don't make the Main.Basically the people who come inthe last four in each semi gothrough to a B. The top four go lothe Main as usual. Competition is noless intense in the B's as it is in theMain, and there were some topnames in there riding B's.2: Gold Star plates. Another BB ex-clusive. The rider leading the pointsseries going into the race rides agold plate with a black star. Similarto the Yellow Jersey in road racing, lets the public know who's the mainman at the moment. British Cham-pions ride with gold plates with 01on them.

Pros race BB. This is paulGray, U.K. Boss srgn up, on hisway to a fourth overall.

At Weston, David Maw wasenrolled înto the BBIIIXÂ llallOl Fame, a very teteoccutence. He,s got so menytitles (National, Euro andWoild) it rcads mote like aFactory Team,s toster, not asingle rider. Dave taw wins, but was wiped out hete atWeston after a blown gate.3: Clubs. BBMXA is very club ori-entated, with banners and loudcheering sections coming from allover the country. A competition forthe loudest cheering club wonHoffy's hat, signed by allthe pros.4: Jumping contest. Just to fill in abreak between the motos and semis,a jumping contest, which turned outto be more of a demo, took placeover the big step down. lnterestingpoint here was Steven Geall, 17 PlusNational Ramp Champion enteredhere with some blistering Candy Barjumps. A couple of Superclassriders tried to get the distance re-cord. More people rode, with anyoneriding this contest getting a freeFREESTYLE Magazine. Major rushtime when this was announced.5: Friendship. BMX is all about hav-ing a good time with friends. Herefriends and family were shoutingand screaming for everybody else, noise level was at a max. Good stuff.6: Pros. BBMXA is the only raceassociation to run Pro racing in theU.K. On this d"y, Tony Fleming(V.H.R) was Mr. Consistent, takingtwo 2nds in the first two Mains, andfirst in the 3rd to win over DamionParkinson (Thruster GT) who hadtwo good firsts, but then placedsixth in the last which knocked himdown to second overall. Overall, thethree Main system works well, itshows who is really in form on theday. Anyone who has had bad luckin the first can make up for it in thenext two races.7: Overall, the Weston BBMXA Nat-ional was a good one. The sun wasout, the racing was HOI and thecrowd was LOUD. On the 'zine front;Zenit{r is a new one. lt features aRob Roskopp interview (!!!), musicreviews, zine review, pictorial, JesseMartinez mini-view, and some otherstuff. lt's good, and the layout isnovel, and it's 70 percent skate, 30percent bikes. CONTEST ROUND UP

Bennett with startling

Central And Wales Regional.Saturday 4th June.

Rhydycar Sport Centre,Merthyr Tydfil.

Over 40 riders took part and withplenty of local support this musthave been one of the noisiestregionals for a long time.

Under 13's produced only onerider, that being Simon pearsonwho for his age pulled someexcellent ground tricks,Squeakersons and Funky Chickensbeing his best.

13 Plus saw Rick Coombes tryingto dislodge Mark Atkins andalthough Mark prefers morecompetition it did not prevent himfrom coming out on top onceagarn.

14 Plus; Simon Bennet, AnthonyDaley and Gareth Swan battledout the places here, and Simon

the general opinion. In first placecame Karl Denton with thesmooth ride and performance on anew bike and new sponsor.

ln the 16 Plus several newnames to the fore, Tonv Brewerand Andrew Lawrence in joint 3rdplace, 2nd place went to DavidCastledine, not at his best, andLiam Ward with some FreakSquaks, Hang 5's and Marble Bagscame in first by 2 points.

17 Plus saw John yull with ahost of original tricks, FrontsideUnboomerangs, Roparonies andWhiplashes takes first place fromJason Hewitt. Jason came secondand should be eligible fornationals, and if he keeps his mindon his riding and not waving tothe crowd will surprise somé ofthe more well known riders veryshortly.

Masterclass gave us 2 1/, minutesof .Gary Neale's routine. Some sayhe's the tops, others disagree, bulhe's always there giving-his besteven when there are no otherMasterclass riders, are they afraidof something?

Ramps . . .

No Under 13 riders, and only MarkAtkins in the 13 Plus section, thismust be difficult to motivateoneself when you know there areno other competitors. However,Mark made full use of the ramparea, although the ramps werenot as good as normal forcanyoning etc. to give acomprehensive account of StepThrus, Canyons, 5ft airs withplenty of style.

14 Plus saw a much improvedAnthony Daley with good air andramp work take first place 5 pointsahead of Gareth Swan whosè localsupport couldn't improve his score.Simon Bennett and SimonRathbone were joint third.

ln the 15 Plus all eyes were onKarl Denton who together withhis supporters gave the crowd athrilling couple of minutes with 7ftairs, Lookbacks, 1 Footers and avery smooth 540 all too good forthe others in his group. AshleyWheatley was 2nà ana DaviâCovedge third.

ln the 16's, David Castledine andBrian Willis were equal 2nd. Davidwith 5ft airs and various lip tricksincluding a Backside Boneless,Brian however crashed doing aone footer, his front wheel bonedoff the side of the ramp andwould certainly have won thissection but for that mistake. His7ft airs, No Handers and onefooters were very good. Howevertake nothing away from thewinner Glynn Green who rodesmoothly to beat the two secondplace riders by one point.

17 Plus went to Chilly (David)Childs from Kettering. His 7ft airs(one foot), 5ft canyons, high TurnDowns and Ruff Hops were toogood for the rest of the class. PhilBevan - body armour and all,was third and Jason Hewitt pullinginto second place to give him thèoverall Nol spot. Masterclassramps saw Gary Neale give a fineperformance with 3ft airs andFakies about 1ft out.

The Overall trophies went to:Mark Atkins, 13 Plus. AnthonyDaley, 14 Plus. Karl Denton, 15Plus. David Castledine, 16 plus.Jason Hewitt, 17 Plus. Gary Neale,Masterclass.

resemblance to Gary Neale pulledoff his first win of the season.

ln the 15 Plus section tan Coywith Forward Elbow Glides andFrontside Decades (ame third.Sebastian Lester with HyperspasticLocomotives, Backwards RubberRides and other tricks camesecond, a little undermarked was

Simon Pearcon took FunkyChickens and suchlike to agood first on Under 13 Flat.

27th August, Ripley Leisure Centre.Write: Andy Lawrence, 5 Wilton Road,

Hansworth, Birmingham 820 3RX.Enclose an S.A.E. for info.

Chairman's NoteI write this brief note (time is not on my side)a few days from the Tizer World Cup, andthe lasl of the Nationals at Preston. Nextmonth you will be able to read, and see all

about the events in the magazrne. The past few days have been hectic, with

a visit to Edinburgh for the third National, followed the following day by a visit withMark to the BBMXA National at Weston-Super-lYare. The Weston visit was verygood, despite the drivel A few friendshipswere struck on the day, and hopefully theimaginary (although to some reall)differences between the UKBFA, BBf'lXA,and UKBI'4X were seen to be tiny ratherthan large. All down to personalities really. Both my counterparts rn BBMXA. andUKBI1X (Bill Baggs, and Paul Spurr) aretotally dedicated to their sport, and bothbelieve that they are doing their best for thespor-t. Both run events, and in really quitedifferent ways, but both effectively, and forthe benefit of the riders. I am absolutelycerlain that both could amalgamate into onebody for the general benefit of the sport ofBMX racing. What is stopping them fromwhere I sit (or stand at racing meetings) is

that neither want to be seen to give way tothe other, and both feel that they run thingsin a way that is best for the sport as they seeit. And they do!

How does this impasse resolve itself,r lt.rust be resolved if the sport is to progressto a truly nationally recognised sport, withsponsorship able to carry it into the nextlevel of competence, When this happens, then the newcomers to the sport mustincrease in numbers rapidly, and the clubs, tracks, and national body must be ready todevelop the ground level input to the sporl,By this means, and I would guess only thismeans, will the sport develop to the level ofa recognised sport to the general public.Freestyle magazine can onl;,do so much, itonly reaches a tiny proportion of the youthof the country as yet, and the media(especially TV) see the sport as a kiddiespastime (and that goes for Freestyle BMX as

well!). Whenever I am with the mediapeople (who have this vision of BYX as littlechildren on little bikes) I take great delight inpresenting them with whole families whoride (and some freestylers are married menas well). Shock, horror crosses their faces asthey realise (too late to help us) that theyhave ludged it wrong.

You will notice that I have sneakedFreestyle back into racing discussionsl Well, I

have done so deliberately, because in thepublic mind (small though it is, and with a

very limited vision) they are the same thing. So, why not bring all three together underone umbrella in a way that does not removethe indivrduality of any of them as a firstmove? We could plan calendars together toavoid clashes. We could look at sponscrshipstogether. We might even work together toconsolidate on what now exrsts, anddevelop for the future.

ls that too difficult a vision for all to seewhat could be downstream for us all?

I pose the question to everyone whosincerely believes in the development of thesport (as I know the other organisationsalready do), and ask, why not?
