Freedom of designFreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams are engineered and manufactured by New Millennium to address the growing need for structural design freedom. The beam opens the way to create and utilize space in bold, new ways.

In addition, the beam is more space-efficient and cost-efficient than concrete, making it possible to design wider bays with refreshingly creative form and function at lower costs.

For parking garages, hospitals and most any project where space is at a premium, the beam offers a structurally lean and low profile with an open, airy, and aesthetic appeal.

•Enables exceptionally wide, column-free spans

• Neatly integrates MEP through openings for lower floor heights

•Exposed aesthetic appeal with enclosure cost elimination

•Made of 96% recycled steel from sources in the U.S.

Buildings enhanced by FreeSpan™ beams feature wide-open bay designs and clean access for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) runs. FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams also minimize the need for space-robbing columns.

Camber: FreeSpan™ beams are inherently easy to manufacture with camber for concrete floor applications, whereby a cambered beam can precisely offset the dead load deflection of the concrete slab.

Comparative Costs: FreeSpan™ beams can save up to 10% compared to traditional concrete construction for parking garage applications.

Fireproofed: FreeSpan™ beams can be painted or fireproofed by other trade professionals on-site. Their open and accessible design also allows for the easy integration of HVAC, electrical and plumbing runs.

Freedom of choiceThe versatility of the FreeSpan™ beam is demonstrated by its use across an extremely wide spectrum of building types, sizes and specialized functions.

In addition to the aesthetic appeal, the strength of the beam can be precisely matched to the load for greater cost efficiency. The beams are readily available with either hexagonal or round openings, and their varying lengths can be erected to create arches, columns, and other artful yet structural elements.

Asymmetic: FreeSpan™ beams can be engineered to combine a lighter upper half with a heavier lower half to increase load capacity while minimizing beam weight. The design is ideal for composite deck applications, as a subfloor steel beam supporting a concrete floor. In addition, studs can be welded to the top flange of the castellated beam to solidly anchor the concrete to the beam.

Architects, engineers, erectors, installing trades and owners all benefit from the many performance and cost advantages of FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams.

Freedom for allArchitects now have the means to create better-designed spaces. Structural engineers now have the means to reduce or eliminate traditionally accepted project costs. Erectors find that FreeSpan™ beams erect faster than concrete and more easily. And there are far fewer impediments to the trade professionals who integrate the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression systems.

Most of all, project owners benefit from buildings that perform with greater space efficiency, unfettered by cost and performance limitations imposed by other construction methods.

•Fewer obstructed sightlines

• Often less cost per square foot than concrete

•Lighter framing reduces size of columns and footings

•Contributes to more efficient space illumination

•Lower floor-to-floor height with integrated MEP runs

•Beams erect faster due to fewer columns

•Low floor vibration is characteristic of the beam

•Open access for future owner maintenance

AISC certified manufacturing New Millennium manufactures FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams right here in the USA at our production facility in Continental, Ohio.

During the castellated beam production process, a solid steel beam forged from recycled steel is cut in half lengthways, using automated plasma torch cutting. The split halves are then offset and welded back together to create a beam that is the same weight, but is now deeper, stronger, and ideally suited for long span applications.

Our highly efficient manufacturing facilities can produce 90-foot castellated beam sections. Customized beams are engineered to address unique project needs, including welded infill sections for special connection points.

The FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beam is produced by cutting a beam lengthwise following a hexagonal or circular pattern. The top and bottom halves are then staggered and welded together to create a deeper, stronger beam.

•50% deeper with depths up to 66 inches

• Up to 40% stronger moment capacity

• MEP passes through beam openings

• Longer and stronger beam with no added steel

•Spans up to 90 feet

•Furnished straight or cambered

•Vibration analysis available

•Galvanized options

•Easily fireproofed on jobsite by others
