The Birth of Local Radio

As Ohio State celebrated its 50th year of existence in 1920, the Electrical Engineering faculty was busy retooling their transmission capabilities. Prior to WWI, Ohio State was widely known for its experimentation with wireless telegraphy, the sending of Morse code through the air. In March 1920, faculty assisted an extraordinary freshman named Bob Higgy in assembling a transmitter to air phonographic records from the Robinson Lab wireless station.

The headline in the March 8th Ohio State Lantern nearly disguised the historic nature of the accomplishment in Columbus: “Latest New York Jazz Records Are Heard Over Frosh’s Wireless.” It would be the first known radio broadcast of music in Columbus.

Higgy even set a regular schedule for a while and played jazz records on Wednesday nights to the some 200 wireless listeners. The Lantern called Higgy “the first wireless telephone maker in Columbus.”

This is the first of a three-part series on the early years of WOSU by General Manager Tom Rieland.

A month later, Ohio State received a radio license for an experimental radio station called 8XI. It would be two years before local history was made on April 24, 1922, just five days before the first commercial station went on the air in Columbus. The Monday night broadcast opened with an address from OSU President William Oxley Thompson:

“We are starting tonight the first of a series of programs of entertainment and instruction for the citizens of central Ohio. These programs will be of the highest type including music, science and other subjects of popular interest. Happily, Columbus’ first radio program is being broadcasted from Ohio State University.”

This first broadcast included selections played on 78-rpm records courtesy of the Victor Talking Machine Company of Columbus: Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra with “Poet and Peasant,” “Honolulu Eyes,” and “Tytee.” It also included the first local radio newscast — a report of a fire at a downtown shirt factory. The station was still going by 8XI, but official call letters were coming soon.

On May 10, more than 200 families and children joined WOSU Public Media, Classical 101 and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra for “Youth & Family Day,” a free afternoon of performances and musical activities at WOSU@COSI. The day featured games, arts and crafts, music making with digital media, and a concert by ProMusica and local youth. Children of all ages had the chance to create their own conductor’s baton, play a musical memory game, make a shaker, listen to classical music and draw, learn the basics of opera, and explore digital media

and musical games through the PBS KIDS website in the Ross mediaLab. With all of the activities, children were able to interact with Classical 101 personalities Jennifer Hambrick, Christopher Purdy and John Rittmeyer.

ProMusica performed Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale, narrated by Classical 101 Host Boyce Lancaster, with special accompaniment by students from Columbus International High School as well as homeschool students. The afternoon of musical merriment ended with an instrument petting zoo, where children (and adults) were able to see if they were destined to be prodigies by trying their hand at playing the violin, with instruments provided by the Loft Violin Shop.

Beginning June 2, the lineup of PBS KIDS® programs on WOSU TV will change. WOSU TV has always made summer adjustments to the PBS KIDS lineup: kids are out of school for the summer and the research has shown this is the ideal time of the year to make changes. This summer, WOSU TV will give kids more of the programs they like more often, making it “Double the Fun.”

Many of our top-rated PBS KIDS programs will now air back-to-back throughout the day. This means kids will see more Curious George, Wild Kratts, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Arthur every weekday.

We know that more kids ages 4 to 8 join our PBS KIDS audience every summer. This new

schedule reflects the change we see in our kid’s audience and allows us to entertain the big kids as well as our preschoolers. If you’re missing one of your favorites, you can always watch PBS KIDS programs online anytime for free at www.pbskids.org/video.

Our PBS KIDS schedule will change again in the fall when school is back in session and we introduce a brand new PBS KIDS program, Odd Squad.

Garden of Hope89.7 Morning Edition host Debbie Holmes told the story of a special community garden near OSU. This garden does more than produce fresh vegetables — it cultivates hope. The aptly named “Garden of Hope” is tended by patients at OSU’s James Cancer Hospital. Debbie introduced us to cancer patient Hana Mattan who gained strength from cultivating vegetables. “Healthy food is good, it gives me encouragement,” she said as she picked lettuce and onions.

From Baghdad to ColumbusMarilyn Smith, 89.7’s All Things Considered host, shared the story of Masin Al-Issa who moved his family to central Ohio not by choice, but out of necessity. He, his wife and three children fled

the strife in their homeland of Iraq and found stability in a welcoming community. But still Al-Issa longs for his Baghdad home: “I left my heart over there.”

Beulah Park Shuts DownFor nearly a century, racehorses thundered down the track at Beulah Park in Grove City. The appearance of a nearby casino forced Ohio’s first horse track to close. 89.7 Reporter Sam Hendren used his microphone and his skilled ear to capture the bittersweet memories of Beulah Park workers and race fans as they said goodbye. “I can remember Saturdays as a child; Broadway would just be packed with vehicles coming to the racetrack. And now it’s gone. And it’s sad,” said long-time Grove City resident Mary Molchan.

Central Ohio is filled with diverse people doing wonderful things. Hear their voices and listen to their stories every day on 89.7 NPR News and online at wosu.org.

New 89.7 NPR News Segment Focuses on Tech Trends

The Stories of Central Ohioans – They’re on 89.7 NPR NewsIn these days of disagreements over taxes, health care and foreign policy, stories about conflict can overwhelm. Incredible stories of average people doing great things and tales of Columbus’ past can get squeezed out of the daily news cycle.

At 89.7 NPR News and on wosu.org, we try hard not to let that happen.

Some call these stories “soft features,” but they are far from “fluff.” They are the stories of central Ohioans who have made a difference. They are stories of institutions from our past and present that have created wonderful memories. Over the past several months, 89.7 NPR News shared many of these stories with you.

It’s hard to keep up with rapidly changing technology news. It’s even harder to make sense of it all. A new segment on 89.7 NPR News helps you do both.

Marketplace Tech, hosted by Ben Johnson, is produced by the same folks who bring us Marketplace (weeknights, 6pm), Marketplace Morning Report (weekdays, 7:50am) and Marketplace Weekend (Saturdays, 7am).

Marketplace Tech airs each weekday morning at 8:55am. The show features newsmakers, visionaries and creators who keep pace with what’s happening in the world of technology and explain what it means in our daily lives.

Whether it’s changes in the cable television industry, Silicon Valley takeovers, driverless cars or the latest in smartphones, Marketplace Tech provides tech news “for the rest of us.”

Make Marketplace Tech part of your weekday morning routine.

Freedom Summer

During the summer of 1964, the nation’s eyes were riveted on Mississippi. Over 10 memorable weeks known as “Freedom Summer,” more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in an historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.NExT AIR 6/25/2014 2:00 AM

Pete Seeger: The Power of Song The Power of Song poetically documents Pete Seeger’s unique contributions to folk music and society, with everyone from Bob Dylan to the Dixie Chicks helping tell the story of the folk artist’s experiences. Seeger introduced America to its own folk heritage, got a whole generation passionate about picking the banjo and got them singing together — using music as a force for social change. Largely misunderstood by his critics, including the US government, Seeger went from the top of the hit parade to the top of the blacklist — banned from commercial television for more than 17 years.NExT AIR 6/21/2014 2:00 AM
