CAMPAIGN GUIDE: FREEDOM TO MARRY AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AMENDMENT

The Freedom to Marry Ohio movement isdedicated to freedom and ending marriagediscrimination in Ohio as soon as November2014. In the last 10 years, we’ve seen supportfor marriage equality take a 36% swing in itsfavor, nationwide. This year alone saw acascade of state legislativevictories to turn marriage equalityinto law. But while other stateshave made advances, only twopathways exist to repeal the2004 Ohio Marriage Ban: yearsof uncertain court challenges or acitizen-initiated petition.

That’s where we come in. FreedomOhio isworking to give every person in every family thesame right to life, liberty and happiness. Ourpetition process is underway to allow Ohioansto repeal and replace the discriminatoryconstitutional Amendment banning thefreedom to marry and, by doing so, provide

necessary security for LGBT families.

With over 3,500 active volunteers in all 88counties across Ohio, FreedomOhio is well onthe way to collecting the 385,245 validsignatures needed to secure ballot placement

in 2014. After the Freedom toMarry Amendment is officially onthe ballot, we will run a cutting-edge campaign to successfullyadopt the Amendment statewide. With polls showing voter supportin Ohio reaching as high as 54%,the question for MarriageEquality isn’t “if” but “when.”

And along with the right data-driven research, messaging and sufficient fundraising to run apositive, inclusive, state-of-the-art strategiccampaign across Ohio, the “when” will beNovember 2014. But we need your help. Withyour support, we can win equality for allOhioans.

Ohioans are collecting signatures to askyour help in amending Ohio’s constitutionalban on same-sex marriage in order to allowtwo consenting adults the right to marrywhile still keeping freedom in the hands ofchurches and religious institutions so theyalways have the final say in who they marry.

The Freedom to Marry and ReligiousFreedom Amendment seeks to replaceArticle XV, Section 11 of the OhioConstitution to read: “In the State of Ohioand its political subdivisions, marriage shallbe a union of two consenting adults notnearer of kin than second cousins, and nothaving a husband or wife living, and noreligious institution shall be required toperform or recognize a marriage.”

The inclusion of the last 13 words of theamendment, which is known as the “Respectand Protect Religious Freedom Clause,”

provides greater opportunities to havingconversations with more Ohioans. USSenator Portman has often utilized thislanguage when discussing his support for theFreedom to Marry. It’s a win-win thatprotects freedom and supports equality.

CAMPAIGN GUIDE: FREEDOM TO MARRY AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AMENDMENT

In the last year alone, two public polls show amajority of Ohioans support marriage equality.

The Saperstein Poll commissioned by TheColumbus Dispatch and published in March2013 of 1,003 Ohio adults shows a solid 54%in support of Ohio’s Freedom to Marry andReligious Freedom Amend-ment and only 40%oppose the initiative. Such a high level ofsupport is influenced by the fact that theAmendment respects and protects religiousfreedom. And it is important to note that the Dispatch poll was conducted prior to U.S. Senator Rob Portman’sannouncement of support.Additionally, pollsters believethe Amend-ment’s support iseven higher, citing the fact thatregistered voters pay greaterattention to ballot issues.

Similarly, The Wash-ingtonPost poll of 1,101 Ohio voterspublished in October 2012indicates that 52% supportand 37% oppose allowingsame gender couples the

freedom to marry. Equally as encouraging isthe fact that 36% strongly support marriageequality while only 30% strongly oppose it.For the first time, the intensity of support isoutpacing that of opponents.

For the first time in history, Public PolicyPolling found in an August 19, 2013 surveythat a strong majority of voters favor same-sex marriage with 48% supporting 42%opposing and 10% undecided. Amongvoters 18 to 45, a resounding 65% supportedmarriage equality.

54

The June Supreme Court decisions strikingdown Proposition 8 in California and theDefense of Marriage Act (DOMA) show thatthe tide is turning in the fight for marriageequality on a national level. Now thatDOMA’s key provisions have beenoverturned, Ohio same-sex couples who arelegally married outside of the state areeligible to receive some federal benefitspreviously granted only to opposite gendermarried couples, making it increasinglydifficult to deny the freedom to marry tosame sex couples.

The Court’s decisions have energized andmobilized base marriage equality supporterswhich will lead to greater turnout in 2014.Additional Court actions have led to greaterdialogue of why marriage matters, and putinto greater focus the reasons why Ohioanscan and should repeal and replace Ohio’smarriage ban.
