Words are powerful. They take justmoments to speak, but they can echofor lifetimes. How many times have youheard someone say, “What does heknow, he’s just a staff sergeant” or“what can I do – I am only an airman?”I am here to tell you there is no suchthing as “just” a staff sergeant or “only”an airman.

While speaking to an AirmanLeadership School class, I was asked toname the most influential leader in mycareer. I know many generals, evenmore chiefs, and all the living chiefmaster sergeants of the Air Force.Despite this, I chose Staff Sgt. MarkDavila.

I was a master sergeant, working in aspecial duty unit. My career was on thefast track, and I was riding high. Oneafternoon, Sergeant Davila knocked onmy door and asked if we could speakprivately. I assumed he had a problemand was happy that he trusted meenough to ask for help.

Stepping in he said, “SergeantTappana, you have high standards and Ienforce them with our people. I can’t dothat anymore unless you start living bythem again. Are you okay?”

My heart stopped and I asked himwhat he meant. Gently, he pointed atthe mirror on the back of the door andasked me if I’d be happy if one of ourAirmen came in looking like me.

An honest lookbrought an honestanswer, “no.”

My hair was toolong, my uniformand shoes lookedbad, and I lookedworse. What only afew people knewwas that my daugh-ter had been brutal-ly attacked and wasin the middle of asix-month hospitalization. I thought Iwas handling it well, but in reality, Iwas fraying badly around the edges.Determined to make a change, I wenthome, cleaned up, made a mentalhealth appointment and started to getmyself back together.

I might not have thought about itagain, but six months later my chiefasked me for bullets for my enlistedperformance report. When I droppedthem off, he said, “These are great. Thiswill be easy to write. I was worried fora while.”

When I asked what he meant, he out-lined all of the same shortcomingsSergeant Davila previously pointed out.

He was aware but had taken no action.Neither had any of the other peoplesenior to me in the unit. They werewatching and judging, but onlySergeant Davila was leading.

Every good thing that happened inmy career since then has roots in

Sergeant Davila’s actions. My promo-tions to senior master sergeant andchief would not have happened if hehadn’t taken the lead.

Every Airman I have led or helpedsince then is part of his legacy. Let’s notforget the most powerful part of his cri-tique – his last sentence, “Are you OK?”He did not assume I failed because I’dsuddenly become a bad person or was

fatally flawed, heknew there had to bea reason. What abeautiful leadershipmove. He taught mevolumes about howto be a wingman andhow to lead up thechain.

There is no suchthing as “just” or“only” when it comesto our Air Force

team. Don’t discount or devalue thepeople around you with words that limitthem to less than their full potential.More importantly, don’t discount ordevalue yourself. There is no one morepowerful than the person who is doingthe right thing at the right time.

Three Randolph Air Force Base logis-ticians were honored with awards lastweek by the Air Education and TrainingCommand for the outstanding supportthey provided during 2009.

James Williams, 902nd LogisticsReadiness Squadron director, won theGeorge F. Ruestow Logistics ReadinessSenior Civilian Manager of the YearAward; Alfredo Sanchez, 902nd LRSsupervisor-supply management special-ist, won the Air Force MaterielManagement Civilian Supervisor of theYear and Stacy Bell, 902nd LRS trans-

portation assistant, won the Air ForceCivilian Technician of the Year Award.

Ms. Bell was cited for being a premiercounselor in the field of shipping homeand household goods. During last year,she counseled and briefed more than800 Airmen and scheduled over 700moves with no misconsigned or delayedshipments.

“The quality and quantity of her workis always above and beyond reproach,”said Mr. Williams.

Ms. Bell partnered with theRandolph AFB Airman and FamilyReadiness Center, creating a newcom-er’s brief where customers receivedcritical transportation claims informa-tion. She was also recognized forworking with the customer servicesection, helping more than 4,000walk-in customers to be put at easeand given good customer service citedas key to having a smooth move.

Much planning and a team effortfrom the 435th Fighter TrainingSquadron’s Airmen, civilian workersand contractors made the squadron’srecent move from temporary trailerhousing to new quarters in RandolphAir Force Base’s Hangar 6 go smooth-ly, squadron leaders said.

Maj. Mike Pelletier, 435th FTSexecutive officer, gave a lot of creditfor the successful transfer of equip-ment, furniture, electronics and per-sonnel to the squadron’s office man-ager, Katrina Scott.

“Kat was the focal point,” the majorsaid. “She had the most corporate knowledgeof where everything needed to be. When all wassaid and done, because of her efforts, the furniturearrived on time and people were able to plug theirphones and computers in at our new location andeverything worked right.”

The bulk of the move occurred March 12, MajorPelletier explained. He said Ms. Scott saw to it thatessential equipment, such as computers, phones,

radios, the operations area, deskand associated equipment, thesquadron’s command suite and keypersonnel were in place in Hangar 6by that time, when, as he said, “awhole bunch of jets were launched”on cross-country flights without los-ing any flying time.

Major Pelletier also gave creditto his assistant deputy of opera-tions, Maj. Bryan France, forassembling a group of nine stu-dent pilots to have them assist inmoving squadron equipment andmaterials to their new location.

“Starting at 6 a.m. that day, theyworked their rear-ends off with

smiles on their faces, doing tasks likehanging pictures on the walls after put-

ting up strings to make sure pictures were linedup right,” Major France commented.

Majors France and Pelletier also recognized thesquadron’s aircrew flight equipment supervisor, MarioRios, and his three technicians, for setting up the shop’sspaces and equipment – flight helmets, survival gear,testing equipment, lockers and shelving and desks, pluselectronics and computers – after putting in a lot of

plumbing themselves – over the weekend following theMarch 12 move.

Mr. Rios gave credit to his three technicians forhis shop’s successful move. “These guys are awe-some,” he said.

Nick Alino, Air Force Center for Engineering andEnvironment construction project manager, said theentire move to and construction of the squadron’s newquarters cost about $4 million from the full designphase to finish.

“The design phase started in early 2008 and the con-struction contract was awarded in February of 2009,”Mr. Alino added. “About 100 contractors and subcon-tractors participated altogether from the design phasethrough the move.”

He added the squadron’s new quarters in Hangar6 were about 80 years old and needed a lot of work.The roof of the lean-to portion at the new hangarquarters had to be replaced and contractors had toreinforce that portion of the building with a lot ofsteel backing.

“The renovated areas are pretty solid,” Mr. Alinosaid. “If a plane hits them, it’s not going to win.”

“The entire infrastructure is basically new and thebuilding is very well-insulated,” he added.“Everything’s very convenient here. The airplanes wefly are now straight out of the building’s back door.”

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE – The Air Force will beimplementing changes in March to services availablefor use on all Air Force-issued BlackBerry handhelddevices to bolster the security of the devices. TheseDepartment of Defense-directed changes will be over-seen by the 24th Air Force, the operational warfightingorganization responsible for defending Air Force net-work operations.

“Just as physical security measures at forward andstateside bases are constantly being improved to meetcurrent threats, so also are cyber protection measurestaken to protect DoD information,” said Maj. Gen.Richard Webber, 24th Air Force commander.

The Air Force mission depends on the availability,integrity and confidentiality of information systemsinterconnected through cyberspace. Adversaries areconstantly seeking to find and exploit potential vulnera-bilities of these vital information systems. All Air Forcepersonnel are responsible for safeguarding these sys-tems, and improvements in network security proce-dures help them to do so.

The following configuration changes will be imple-mented within the month of March:

• Users will no longer have the capability to send orreceive text messages with attached photos or videos.Text-only messaging will remain enabled.• If a device is being synched and its software is out-of-date, a “Force Load” message will appear. The userwill only have one opportunity to decline updating thesoftware. Any subsequent syncing attempts will renderthe device inoperative until the software is updated.• Users will not be able to download additionalapplications to their devices over the Internet.• Most Bluetooth functionality will be disabled. Theonly Bluetooth feature that will continue to functionwill be linking the device to the smart card reader cra-dle.• Users will no longer be able to connect their smartcard reader cradle to their computers.

Air Force members who have questions about thesechanges can contact their local client support admin-istrators. Personnel who notice abnormal operationsof any communications devices or equipment areencouraged to contact their local information assur-ance officer or CSA.

“Mission assurance is the goal for which all changesare enacted to our network and the services providedwith it – to protect the Air Force, its people, and itscapabilities,” said General Webber.

Four women, hair tinged in silver, are playingbridge in the Air Force Village lobby and enjoying alively conversation. The women could be sisters, sosimilar in dress and personality and so connected toeach other in discernible friendship.

All have served their country as wives of Air Forceofficers – relocating when required and raising chil-dren alone when their husbands were deployed.Today, they live at Air Force Village, home to morethan 1,200 retired, honorably separated military offi-cers, their spouses, widows, widowers and eligibledependents.

Though three of the women have the financialresources to afford this comfortable, safe and secureretirement lifestyle, the other, Alice, needs financialassistance. “Those who give to AFAF are making a difference.These widows who have run out of resources throughno fault of their own can live dignified, comfortablelives. They live in beautiful surroundings, in a lifestylethey have earned, and they have access to health careshould they need it,” said retired Maj. Gen. GaryAlkire, AFV president and CEO.

Finally,his excellent money management skillshelped him run a $375,000 repair parts

account that was brought in on-time andwithin budgetary guidelines.

Mr. Sanchez said his award was anhonor which reflected well on the peoplewho work under him.

He wasalso praised for his overall accomplish-ments – leading 180 logisticians in deliv-ering full-spectrum support to fourheadquarters and more than 30 DefenseDepartment-associated units.

Mr. Williams, who said he was hum-bled to receive the award, gave credit tothose who work for him.

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE – The Air Force will beimplementing changes in March to services availablefor use on all Air Force-issued BlackBerry handhelddevices to bolster the security of the devices. TheseDepartment of Defense-directed changes will be over-seen by the 24th Air Force, the operational warfightingorganization responsible for defending Air Force net-work operations.

“Just as physical security measures at forward andstateside bases are constantly being improved to meetcurrent threats, so also are cyber protection measurestaken to protect DoD information,” said Maj. Gen.Richard Webber, 24th Air Force commander.

The Air Force mission depends on the availability,integrity and confidentiality of information systemsinterconnected through cyberspace. Adversaries areconstantly seeking to find and exploit potential vulnera-bilities of these vital information systems. All Air Forcepersonnel are responsible for safeguarding these sys-tems, and improvements in network security proce-dures help them to do so.

The following configuration changes will be imple-mented within the month of March:

• Users will no longer have the capability to send orreceive text messages with attached photos or videos.Text-only messaging will remain enabled.• If a device is being synched and its software is out-of-date, a “Force Load” message will appear. The userwill only have one opportunity to decline updating thesoftware. Any subsequent syncing attempts will renderthe device inoperative until the software is updated.• Users will not be able to download additionalapplications to their devices over the Internet.• Most Bluetooth functionality will be disabled. Theonly Bluetooth feature that will continue to functionwill be linking the device to the smart card reader cra-dle.• Users will no longer be able to connect their smartcard reader cradle to their computers.

Air Force members who have questions about thesechanges can contact their local client support admin-istrators. Personnel who notice abnormal operationsof any communications devices or equipment areencouraged to contact their local information assur-ance officer or CSA.

“Mission assurance is the goal for which all changesare enacted to our network and the services providedwith it – to protect the Air Force, its people, and itscapabilities,” said General Webber.

Four women, hair tinged in silver, are playingbridge in the Air Force Village lobby and enjoying alively conversation. The women could be sisters, sosimilar in dress and personality and so connected toeach other in discernible friendship.

All have served their country as wives of Air Forceofficers – relocating when required and raising chil-dren alone when their husbands were deployed.Today, they live at Air Force Village, home to morethan 1,200 retired, honorably separated military offi-cers, their spouses, widows, widowers and eligibledependents.

Though three of the women have the financialresources to afford this comfortable, safe and secureretirement lifestyle, the other, Alice, needs financialassistance. The welfare of children is an everyday concern ofRandolph’s Family Advocacy Program, but itsefforts to help safeguard society’s youngest mem-bers will especially be evident in April.

Personnel involved in the program will partici-pate in activities at Randolph and in the communityto call attention to their mission during Child AbuseAwareness Month and Month of the Military Child.

In addition to providing information at theRandolph Medical Clinic and the base library, theFamily Advocacy Program will conduct a host ofclasses – from Bundles for Babies and a car-seatclinic at the Airman and Family Readiness Centerto stress management and time management atthe Health and Wellness Center. FAP personnelwill also participate in events such as theRandolph Youth Programs’ annual Fam-A-Ganzaand the San Antonio community’s KidsDay in thePark at San Pedro Springs Park, both set for April10, and the Child Development Center’s SpringFling April 16.

“Being involved in the community as a whole ispart of the family advocacy mission,” said FamilyAdvocacy Intervention Specialist Mitzi Wood.

Ms. Wood is serving again as volunteer chairfor KidsDay in the Park, a free event for parentsand children 10 and under that features food,entertainment and information booths.Activities at the event, where some 5,000 fami-lies are expected, are related to early childhoodeducation and development.

active role at KidsDay, said Ms. Wood. Her dutiesinclude finding volunteers to set up, tear downand man all the booths at the event and to over-see them throughout the day.

The month’s theme, “Keeping the Promise:Partnering to Protect Our Communities’Children,” is consistent with the Family AdvocacyProgram’s community involvement and its com-mitment to prevent child abuse in the communityas well as in the home.

Ms. Wood said parents need to know there ispotential for child abuse outside the home, wherev-er their children go.

“We want to make parents aware they can’t treattheir children the way we were brought up,” shesaid. “Parents should be present in their children’slives and know what’s going on in their heads.”

Ms. Wood said parents should also be aware oftheir children’s online activities, another areawhere the dangers of abuse and exploitation arereal.

One of the keys to preventing abuse is to startdialogue with children at an early age, she said.

“Know your kids,” Ms. Wood said. “If their per-sonality changes, it indicates something is going onin their lives.”

She said parents should educate their children onwhat is acceptable behavior, both for them and forothers in their lives, and establish appropriateboundaries for them.

“We should also be careful about the messageswe send kids,” Ms. Wood said.

Young Airmen and family members came to theRandolph Air Force Base library March 20-21 toshoot, throw grenades, kick and karate chop eachother – electronically – and more often than not, leftwith books in their hands to read.

The electronic combat happened during the baselibrary’s first-ever weekend video game tournamentswhere contestants played against each other over theweekend.

One librarian explained the reason for the tourna-ment.

“The purpose of having the video games is toimprove and update the Department of Defense’sMorale, Welfare and Recreation library programand to focus on military families by providing thema fun environment,” said Catherine Nishimuta,902nd Force Support Squadron Randolph AFBlibrary supervisory librarian.

Ms. Nishimuta said the Randolph library beganreceiving video games and associated equipmentaround December.

“These are materials the DoD is giving to their jointbase libraries around the country to re-vitalize pro-grams libraries have to offer – and to offer Airmenand family members some activities they can dotogether. In this ‘Year of the Air Force Family,’ itseems appropriate,” Ms. Nishimuta said.

She credited two of her library aides from the902nd Force Support Squadron – Jason Kreinhopand Zach Pollard – with spearheading the video-gaming effort. The duo set up a storage room full ofvideo games and associated equipment and a gam-ing room with wirelesschairs and flat screens forgamers to play in.

Mr. Pollard said heand Mr. Kreinhop con-ceived the idea of theweekend video gametournament to featurethe games and generateword-of-mouth advertis-ing throughout the base.It took the duo abouttwo weeks to set it up.

“First, there was famil-iarizing ourselves with thegames and gettingapproval from our bosses,and then advertising it. The best thing about this tour-nament is that it brings kids into the library,” Mr.Pollard said.

Several of those young family members, plus the

occasional Airman, said they enjoyed competing inthe weekend tournaments.

“It’s a way to get people to meet up together and it’sjust a good time,” saidSenior Airman ChristopherCase, 359th Medical Groupmedical administrator, whobrought his wife, Jolie, andtheir daughters Jessica andKayleigh along to watchand to play games.

“Plus, anybody can dowell at it if they put theirminds to it and work hardat it,” said the avid gamer.“Each character in thegame has strengths andweaknesses. It’s not justpushing buttons and mak-ing moves; it’s about know-

ing a strategy to beat your opponent.”Airman Case said Kayleigh and Jessica enjoy

visiting the library and suggested the libraryhold more tournaments for youngsters and their

parents to participate in.His wife agreed and said, “We come and check out

books and movies and we’ll probably come more ifthey have more video game tournaments.”

Sunday’s tournament featuring current videogames, saw young family members Sam Nielsenand Brandon Le Doux blasting away at each otheron separate screens as they sat next to each other.

Brandon’s mother, Kwai Le Doux, an Army wifefrom nearby Fort Sam Houston, said the library’stournament met her needs for fun things for her sonand his friend to do.

“You know, a lot of these kids like to play videogames on line. I think doing that here, against eachother, is a safe environment and it promotes interac-tion among kids. Besides, it’s all for fun.”

An audit performed last year showedRandolph complies with the Air Force’sstandards of managing hazardouswaste.

Meeting those standards is a taskthat involves organizations throughoutthe base, but the buck really stops atBldg. 37 on the southwest side ofRandolph, where two contractorsreceive and store waste ranging fromaircraft sealant to paint and batterieson a daily basis.

“We take care of the whole base,”said Erik Christianson, hazardouswaste manager. “We’re also responsiblefor the waste that comes out of theRandolph Recreation Park at CanyonLake.”

Randolph is considered a small-quan-tity generator of hazardous waste, lessthan 2,000 pounds per month, primari-ly because paint and related materialsas well as batteries and fluorescent

bulbs are identified as universal wastein Texas, he said.

Mr. Christianson, who works forNative Energy and Technology Inc.,said about 95 percent of hazardouswaste generated at Randolph is sealantremoved from aircraft during regulartear-down and maintenance. It’sbrought to the hazardous waste facility

each morning for eventual disposal.However, universal waste accounts

for most of the materials collected atthe facility, especially the 700 poundsper month of paint-related waste suchas paper, thinners, rags and filters, hesaid.

“Paint-related waste goes to the land-fill or is incinerated,” Mr. Christiansonsaid. “We have a trap for the paintitself. Oil-based paint has to be recap-tured.”

Fluorescent bulbs and batteries,along with pesticides and aerosol cans,are also part of the collection stream atthe hazardous waste facility.

Fluorescent bulbs, even the moreenvironmentally friendly green-tipbulbs, are recycled for glass and mer-cury. Nickel cadmium, lead-acid andlithium batteries are considered univer-sal waste and alkaline batteries arenonhazardous waste, but all are recy-clable.

All materials brought to the facilityare placed in containers in a stagingarea in an open-air warehouse, wherethey are stored until they are picked upfor recycling, incineration or landfilldisposal.

Locked containers near the frontdoor of the facility are used for tempo-

rary storage of oil, antifreeze and off-specification fuel. The facility also fea-tures receptacles for recycling card-board, plastic bottles, aluminum cansand paper.

Mr. Christianson said he and haz-ardous waste technician HarminAguilera wear personal protectiveequipment such as gloves, aprons andface shields when they handle wastematerials.

“That is driven by OSHA require-ments,” he said, referring toOccupational Safety and HealthAdministration guidelines.

Mr. Christianson said running thefacility is “all compliance-driven.”

“We follow federal, state and AirForce regulations,” he said.

Specifically the hazardous wastefacility adheres to the guidelines of thefederal Resource Conservation andRecovery Act, or RCRA, the TexasCommission on Environmental Qualityand Air Force Instruction.

Most offices on base generate univer-sal waste such as paint, batteries andfluorescent bulbs, Mr. Christiansonsaid. Their building custodians areresponsible for disposal of those items.

However, the major waste generatorson base are the aircraft paint barn andmaintenance shops and hangars, andpersonnel at those sites are aware ofthe proper disposal of hazardous anduniversal waste. Selected representa-tives receive training each March onthe proper procedures and regulationsconcerning waste disposal.

The hazardous waste facility issuescontainers with labels to these organi-zations and track them, Mr.Christianson said.

“Everything brought in is logged,” hesaid. “We’ve worked with the sameguys for seven years, so it allows us torun the type of program we have.We’re all on the same page.”

Mr. Christianson said the facility onlyaccepts waste generated on base, butpeople who work at Randolph and livein Bexar County can request pickup ofhousehold hazardous waste materialsfrom paint and batteries to used oil andspray cans by calling 800-449-7587.The city of San Antonio offers a house-hold hazardous waste program at 7030Culebra Ave., and other communitiesprovide similar services.

From Southbridge, Mass., to Seoul, South Korea, the61 members of the 2010 Department of DefenseExecutive Leadership Development Program have beenglobetrotting to gain hands-on field experience gearedtoward sculpting their joint leadership skills.

By exposing the participants to the various militarycomponents and allied forces around the world, pro-gram managers hope to encourage problem-solvingskills that incorporate enterprise-wide solutions.

“Because we live and operate in a joint environ-ment, it’s important that we give our future leadersthe chance to experience joint and coalition teamsworking together toward a common goal. Then theycan take those broader lessons learned and applythem when making decisions that can impact the suc-cess or failure of a mission,” said Dr. Todd Fore, AirForce Personnel Center executive director.

For the past 25 years, ELDP has served as a career-enhancing, competitive program for qualifying DoD uni-formed and civilian employees in pay grades GS-12/13 orequivalent and for majors and major-selects.

“Civilian participants are selected based on theirpotential to become effective leaders at the seniorexecutive level,” said Joan Gudinas from AFPC’s

Directorate of Civilian Integration. “When careerdevelopment teams vector an individual into ELDP,they are looking for initiative, professional excellence,community involvement, integrity and a commitmentto public service.”

The 10-month program is filled with extensive traveland challenging schedules. Between the historical toursof the North and South Korea demilitarized zone andpaying homage in Hawaii during the anniversary of thePearl Harbor attack, participants join in field trainingexercises, tackle obstacle courses and complete intensivestudies all over the world.

An audit performed last year showedRandolph complies with the Air Force’sstandards of managing hazardouswaste.

Meeting those standards is a taskthat involves organizations throughoutthe base, but the buck really stops atBldg. 37 on the southwest side ofRandolph, where two contractorsreceive and store waste ranging fromaircraft sealant to paint and batterieson a daily basis.

“We take care of the whole base,”said Erik Christianson, hazardouswaste manager. “We’re also responsiblefor the waste that comes out of theRandolph Recreation Park at CanyonLake.”

Randolph is considered a small-quan-tity generator of hazardous waste, lessthan 2,000 pounds per month, primari-ly because paint and related materialsas well as batteries and fluorescent

bulbs are identified as universal wastein Texas, he said.

Mr. Christianson, who works forNative Energy and Technology Inc.,said about 95 percent of hazardouswaste generated at Randolph is sealantremoved from aircraft during regulartear-down and maintenance. It’sbrought to the hazardous waste facility

each morning for eventual disposal.However, universal waste accounts

for most of the materials collected atthe facility, especially the 700 poundsper month of paint-related waste suchas paper, thinners, rags and filters, hesaid.

“Paint-related waste goes to the land-fill or is incinerated,” Mr. Christiansonsaid. “We have a trap for the paintitself. Oil-based paint has to be recap-tured.”

Fluorescent bulbs and batteries,along with pesticides and aerosol cans,are also part of the collection stream atthe hazardous waste facility.

Fluorescent bulbs, even the moreenvironmentally friendly green-tipbulbs, are recycled for glass and mer-cury. Nickel cadmium, lead-acid andlithium batteries are considered univer-sal waste and alkaline batteries arenonhazardous waste, but all are recy-clable.

All materials brought to the facilityare placed in containers in a stagingarea in an open-air warehouse, wherethey are stored until they are picked upfor recycling, incineration or landfilldisposal.

Locked containers near the frontdoor of the facility are used for tempo-

rary storage of oil, antifreeze and off-specification fuel. The facility also fea-tures receptacles for recycling card-board, plastic bottles, aluminum cansand paper.

Mr. Christianson said he and haz-ardous waste technician HarminAguilera wear personal protectiveequipment such as gloves, aprons andface shields when they handle wastematerials.

“That is driven by OSHA require-ments,” he said, referring toOccupational Safety and HealthAdministration guidelines.

Mr. Christianson said running thefacility is “all compliance-driven.”

“We follow federal, state and AirForce regulations,” he said.

Specifically the hazardous wastefacility adheres to the guidelines of thefederal Resource Conservation andRecovery Act, or RCRA, the TexasCommission on Environmental Qualityand Air Force Instruction.

Most offices on base generate univer-sal waste such as paint, batteries andfluorescent bulbs, Mr. Christiansonsaid. Their building custodians areresponsible for disposal of those items.

However, the major waste generatorson base are the aircraft paint barn andmaintenance shops and hangars, andpersonnel at those sites are aware ofthe proper disposal of hazardous anduniversal waste. Selected representa-tives receive training each March onthe proper procedures and regulationsconcerning waste disposal.

The hazardous waste facility issuescontainers with labels to these organi-zations and track them, Mr.Christianson said.

“Everything brought in is logged,” hesaid. “We’ve worked with the sameguys for seven years, so it allows us torun the type of program we have.We’re all on the same page.”

Mr. Christianson said the facility onlyaccepts waste generated on base, butpeople who work at Randolph and livein Bexar County can request pickup ofhousehold hazardous waste materialsfrom paint and batteries to used oil andspray cans by calling 800-449-7587.The city of San Antonio offers a house-hold hazardous waste program at 7030Culebra Ave., and other communitiesprovide similar services.

From Southbridge, Mass., to Seoul, South Korea, the61 members of the 2010 Department of DefenseExecutive Leadership Development Program have beenglobetrotting to gain hands-on field experience gearedtoward sculpting their joint leadership skills.

By exposing the participants to the various militarycomponents and allied forces around the world, pro-gram managers hope to encourage problem-solvingskills that incorporate enterprise-wide solutions.

“Because we live and operate in a joint environ-ment, it’s important that we give our future leadersthe chance to experience joint and coalition teamsworking together toward a common goal. Then theycan take those broader lessons learned and applythem when making decisions that can impact the suc-cess or failure of a mission,” said Dr. Todd Fore, AirForce Personnel Center executive director.

For the past 25 years, ELDP has served as a career-enhancing, competitive program for qualifying DoD uni-formed and civilian employees in pay grades GS-12/13 orequivalent and for majors and major-selects.

“Civilian participants are selected based on theirpotential to become effective leaders at the seniorexecutive level,” said Joan Gudinas from AFPC’s

Directorate of Civilian Integration. “When careerdevelopment teams vector an individual into ELDP,they are looking for initiative, professional excellence,community involvement, integrity and a commitmentto public service.”

The 10-month program is filled with extensive traveland challenging schedules. Between the historical toursof the North and South Korea demilitarized zone andpaying homage in Hawaii during the anniversary of thePearl Harbor attack, participants join in field trainingexercises, tackle obstacle courses and complete intensivestudies all over the world.

I am by no means an expert at run-

ning. I have no professional advice to

provide and I don’t see myself setting

any speed records in my life. But I do

enjoy running. It’s a great way to take

your mind off things that have been

bothering you, and I enjoy the health

benefits and the sense of accomplish-

ment felt after completing a long run.

Last year I read an article in a pop-

ular running magazine on the topic of

greeting other runners while run-

ning. The article described the vari-

ous kinds of greetings, everything

from the physical greetings of a

wave, head nod or smile, or the ver-

bal greetings of a “hi,” “hello,” “how’s

it goin’,” or any other kind of audible

device that, while ultimately may

describe the displeasure or sheer

exhaustion a person is experiencing,

is still a greeting nonetheless.

I thought the article was entertain-

ing and touched on an issue that run-

ners may or may not give much

thought to, but the article soon after

made it to the back of my mind, for-

gotten – that is until a few weeks ago.

As spring has started to provide some

sunny, warm afternoons, I’ve taken to

leaving the treadmill or the indoor

track for outdoor running and last

week the topic of runner greetings

again entered my mind.I decided to conduct an experiment.

One day I ventured on the running

path that winds around the golf

course toward Eberle Park and I

made it a point to wave, smile or say

hello to every person I passed on the

path. I was surprised that a majority

of the people paid little attention,

maintaining their gaze down the path

or turning their heads in the other

direction as we passed within a foot

of one another.At first, I was a little annoyed and

after being ignored time and time again

I started getting angry. I always wave

back when someone greets me. It’s

common courtesy, isn’t it? Is it really too

much of an inconvenience to give a

head nod or let out a grunt of acknowl-

edgement when a fellow runner, a

Wingman, passes?As part of the military, the customs

and courtesies we are responsible for

following are in place to show respect to

others. We salute officers, stand when

talking to superiors, address people

with sir or ma’am and display a com-

mon courtesy expected of those in mili-

tary service. It’s part of our military her-

itage. Do you hold the door open for

other people when walking into a build-

ing or say “good morning” to a neighbor

when you go to check your mail?

Shouldn’t common courtesies

translate to all aspects for life, to

include while running?Courtesies aside, running for some

people is nothing less than torture. Let’s

be honest; for some, running is some-

thing they have to do, not something

they want to do, and motivation can be

lacking or nonexistent. A friendly greet-

ing or encouragement, no matter how

brief, can be motivating. It could give a

person that extra boost needed to finish

that last mile without walking.

So why the lack of camaraderie? Is

it embarrassment? Perhaps it’s

exhaustion? After careful considera-

tion, I came to the conclusion that

perhaps runner greetings are lacking

because people are unfamiliar with

proper procedures.Military customs and courtesies are

dictated quite clearly through Air Force

regulations, but there is no AFI govern-

ing what to say when passing a runner,

or the proper wave to give. Perhaps

some people turn their backs on other

runners out of fear of violating some

sort of unknown law. So, in an effort to

improve overall morale and motivation

on the local running paths, I would like

to suggest some guidelines.

The greeting zoneThe time of interaction while passing

another runner is limited. If running in

opposite directions, time in speaking

distance can range between one and

five seconds, so it’s important to estab-

lish the correct range within which to

extend a greeting. When within 10-15

feet of another runner, you may extend

your greeting, which will allow enough

time for the other runner to return the

greeting before passing.

The visual greetingFor the quiet type, you don’t need to

say anything. A head nod, thumbs up,

double thumbs up, smile, peace sign,

hang loose, rock n’ roll, wave of the

hand or any combination of the afore-

mentioned are acceptable. If you want to get fancy and tackle a

verbal and visual greeting, clapping is

also acceptable as a sign of encourage-

ment to another runner.

The verbal greetingGood morning, good afternoon, hi,

hello, how are you, how’s it going, good

day, nice day isn’t it? Or nice shoes are

good examples. Feel free to be inven-

tive. Any greeting instilling friendliness

or motivation is excellent. If you are too

winded to properly execute a verbal

greeting, defer to the visual greeting.

Also, the earphone factor must be con-

sidered. If a runner is blasting

“Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, they aren’t

going to hear you. Defer to the visual

greeting – I’d go with the rock n’ roll

sign.

General do’s and don’tsIf running on a track, it is not neces-

sary to give a greeting to the same per-

son each time around the track. After

three or four “good mornings,” it’s

going to get old. One greeting will do.

Be quick about it. You don’t need to

introduce yourself. “Hello, my name is

…” requires too much of a time com-

mitment for the other runner to proper-

ly respond. A runner’s greeting is to be

quick and non-invasive. Handshakes

require too much time, and besides,

you’re sweaty. Don’t touch me.

Of course, these are just suggestions.

It’s not a requirement to greet other

runners. After all, the important thing is

that you get out there and exercise; not

just to improve your fitness test scores,

but to improve your overall health.

“Remember the ladies, and bemore generous and favorable tothem than your ancestors.”Abigail Adams, First Lady of theUnited States (1797-1801),wrote this in one of her manyletters to her husband, JohnAdams, second U.S. president.During his absences from home,working with the ContinentalCongress and as a diplomat inEurope, Abigail Adams man-aged the farm and familyfinances. Even then, the differ-ential treatment towardswomen was evident. Over time,women have progressed fromFirst Lady to running forPresident of the United States.

Before 1970, women’s histo-ry was rarely the subjectof serious study. Inthe early 1980’s, thetopic was limitedto collegecurricula.However,less than 3percent ofthe contentof teacher trainingtextbooks men-tioned the contribu-tions of women. Womenof color and women in fieldssuch as math, science, and artwere completely omitted. Today,when you search the internetwith the words ‘women’s + histo-

ry + month,’ you will find morethan 40,500,000 hits. That num-ber signifies the dedication andefforts of thousands of individu-als, organizations, and institu-tions that are working to write

women back into history. This year is the

30th anniversary ofthe National

Women’s HistoryProjectthat willbe cele-bratedthroughthe theme,

“Writing WomenBack into

History.” It willhighlight pivotal

themes from previousyears which recognize a differentaspect of women’s achievements,from ecology to art, and fromsports to politics.
