SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS

What is Solving Word Problems Using Multiple Strategies?

Solving Word Problems Using Multiple Strategies is an interactive, NO-PREP math resource for primary-aged students to solve addition and subtraction word problems with answers within 10. Students can solve word problems by using a ten-frame, drawing a picture, using a number or their own strategy.

What are the standards covered?Standard Description

CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.1

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.2

Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.OA.A.3

Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).

How does it work?

There are 4 types of word problems students can solve. These are add to (result unknown), take from (result unknown), put together/take apart (apart/total unknown) and put together/take apart (both addends unknown).

How do I teach students to solve word problems?

First, let students solve word problems by acting it out so they can “see” the word problem. Start with classroom objects like pencils, glue or books. Include their names in the word problems too!

Second, focus on vocabulary. Students should have a strong foundation in understanding vocabulary words like adding, more, take away, difference, sum, combining and separating. Knowing the vocabulary will allow students to explain their thinking and visualize and act out the word problems.

Third, avoid teaching students how to find “key words” in a word problem. Focus on having students explain what the word problem is asking them to solve and using a strategy to explain it.

Fourth, explain and show students that there is more than 1 way to solve a math word problem. There are multiple ways to solve a math problem and we can all get the same correct answer. Always give students the opportunity to share their thinking with you, their partner and with the class. Math becomes less stressful when students are empowered to make choices about how they choose to solve a problem. You can do this by celebrating students that come up with new ways to solve word problems.

This resource comes with an additional page that reads, ”My Idea for Solving Word Problem.” If a student has another idea on how to solve a problem, use this page and allow students to write or draw how they solved it.
