CEO CORNER

Well the big dry continues around the district with minimal rainfall so far. Hopefully there might be a drop ortwo to end the week, but like most I’m not overly optimistic about a significant drenching this week. With atough start to the season it has really shown how resilient the community is to continue to deal withwhatever challenges are thrown at them. I see farmers still working feverishly with their cropping program, albeit at a slower than normal pace, let’s hope all your hard work begins to pay off. I did hear someone saylast week that a bonus of minimal rain so far is that any rain that does fall from now on should at least bein the growing season. The lack of rain certainly hasn’t inhibited the local winter sports teams hitting the park in the early stages ofthe season. It is great that this community continues to fill all teams on a regular basis without forfeits. Thisis testament to the community spirit and overall resilience of the community groups and is one that shouldbe commended. This doesn’t happen just from a once off, it takes years to develop strong communitygroups and sporting clubs so that clubs can handle the tough times. Throwing dollars at external playersand making excuses in pursuit of short term glory is an easy fix as a nearby town is harshly starting to findout. From a Council perspective we are feverishly preparing next year’s budget. If any community members orgroups have any suggestions / wish lists / bright ideas for budget consideration, please send them throughto myself or any other Shire officer or even your favourite Councillor. Whilst not all submissions will beguaranteed inclusion, all suggestions will be considered, evaluated and discussed and a responseendeavoured to be provided. Camp Kulin continues to be a busy hub with 2 camps over the April holidays and the Ladies Camp comingup at the end of May, plus numerous school camps. This week we welcomed Cathy Howard as CampKulin Program Assistant. Cathy has a wealth of knowledge and experience through Department of ChildProtection and will no doubt provide another experienced staff member within our team. Last week Tanyaand I were fortunate to visit His Excellency The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of WesternAustralia at Government House to showcase the wonderful contribution Camp Kulin provides to the Shireof Kulin and the wider Western Australian community. His Excellency was very impressed with programand is hoping to visit Kulin sometime later in the year. I have been fortunate to continue to work closely with Wheatbelt Secondary Freight Network WorkingGroup, which has recently received $85M in funding for 42 local governments across the Wheatbelt toupgrade key freight routes within each Shire. The next phase of that process is to identify priority projectsfor on-ground works commencing 2019/20. Obviously the Federal election this weekend poses a significant amount of uncertainty and anxiety acrossthe community. Whatever the result Council and staff will continue to work closely with our local memberand whoever forms government to ensure this community and the region as a whole is fiercelyrepresented. A big thankyou to all the volunteers who will be helping out within the community on ElectionDay. We await the result with baited breath. Until next time safe travels.

Recently a man named Don Maskew came through the area visiting cemeteries as part of the BillionGravesproject.

BillionGraves is the world's largest resource for searchable GPS cemetery data, and is growing bigger and

better every day.

Volunteers help by collecting headstone images from local and other cemeteries, and then by transcribingthe personal information found on the images, this is what Don did at the Kulin, Pingaring and Dudinin

Cemeteries. His trip through the South East resulted in visiting 22 cemeteries and taking 3,965 photos.

If you are interested check out the links to the cemeteries in the Shire of Kulin:

Celia Violet Carruthers was born on the 15th August 1924. She is the youngest of nine children, born to Celia and JackTruslove. Celia was born in Midland Junction and she lived in Buckingham Road, Greenmount, opposite the BlackboyHill Training Camp, which was then occupied by trainee soldiers during World War One. Celia spent her primary school years at Greenmount Primary School and then went on to Midland school, for Years 7and 8, walking half a mile to catch a bus. She would often buy frozen oranges for a penny each from the tuck shop onthe way. Celia said she remembered the pepper corn trees outside the toilets and how the kids would rub it on thembefore they got the whip, so that it wouldn’t hurt as much. One of Celia’s favourite childhood memories was her twelfth birthday party. It rained all day, and when her brother Raygot home from work, he took over and entertained everyone and it was such a wonderful day. Not long after her twelfthbirthday, Celia had her tonsils out at Princess Margaret Hospital. There was a queue waiting to have them out, and shecame home on the same day. Celia said she must have looked pretty sick, as the guardsman on the train put her mumand her in the first class carriage so she could lie down. Her dad was waiting for them at the Midland Station. Celia’s dadowned a bike shop, Gordonson Bikes in Midland, and owned one of the first cars in Midland, a Studebaker. The family would go on holidays to Canning Bridge with family and friends. They sewed together hessian bags to makea huge tent, which had four rooms. Celia always enjoyed the games and fun with everyone. As a family they had regularpicnics at Rocky Pool. Celia’s mum made most of her clothes, she wore a blue flannel dress with boxer pleats to school and for Sunday school, and she wore a purple dress with white cuffs and collar. Her mum once brought her a floral dress for two and six, 25cents. It was her best dress, and she loved it with its little sleeves and high neck with a little collar. On some nights when the family was home, Celia’s mum played the organ and the family used to stand around it andsing. They didn’t have a lounge room just a dining room and sitting room. The organ was in the sitting room, with a hugetable covered with a red velvet cloth and eight padded chairs. There were such happy days. In the sitting room therewas an open fireplace, which backed onto Celia’s room. She used to put her feet up against the wall when in her bed tokeep warm. After leaving school, Celia used to help her mum and dad collect eggs on their poultry farm, for her dad to take to themarkets. Celia used to pick grapes; they were then dipped in a copper of water and caustic soda, and then put on racksto dry, turning them brown for sultanas and raisins. They had to be very careful taking them out of the copper. When Celia was sixteen she went to work in a dress shop, named Corots, in Hay Street Perth. It was a one-way streetwhere the trams ran down the Centre. The Second World War started and she saw her cousin Stan off where he waskilled in New Guinea on the Kokoda Trail; she never forgot waving him off. Celia’s two brothers Jack and Allan were bothin the army. Celia left Corots and went to work in a Munitions Factory in Midland, making 25 pound artillery shells. Shewould catch the train to Bellevue, cycling to and from the station. During this time, Celia and her friends went to thedances in the Embassy Ballroom in Perth and local dances at Swan View Hall. It was at these dances where Celia met her husband John William Carruthers, Jock. He and his brother Jim and theirfriends would come by bus from Bassendean. Jock would often walk Celia home and then run to catch the last bus toMidland, walking home to Bassendean. The war ended in 1945, and Victory Day was on Celia’s 21st birthday. Jock, Celia and friends celebrated by going toPerth, with the streets being crowded. They travelled across the river, on the Ferry, with everyone on the ferry singingher happy birthday. At this time, Celia left the munitions factory and went to work in Boans Department Store, in thecountry order department. She finished work there when Celia and Jock married on the 16th March 1946. Her mum hadbrought a small house in Guildford and they went to live with her.

They brought a block of land in Bassendean and each weekend they made cement bricks, making 6000 bricksaltogether. Jock and some friends built a lovely home on the block, and they had only been in it for a few months whenJock was offered a share farming job at Laganas in Yealering, near his parent’s farm. So off they went in an old truckwith all their worldly goods, with their four year old son John, born March 1947 and baby Kath, born January 1951, onlysix weeks old. Celia said she cried when she saw the funny little house where they would live. It had no lining, an awful black woodstove and the bathroom was on the front verandah. They had bought a Bedford truck while at Laganas, and Celia tookher licence in that. She would drive this every Friday into Yealering to do the shopping. They grew to love country lifeand made many good friends. Jock worked hard, and after selling the house in Bassendean they were able to buy their own land between Yealeringand Kulin. He cleared most of the land himself, by dragging a chain behind a tractor. They built a big shed on the farmand lived in a caravan in the shed for two years, while Jock and a builder friend built a house on the farm. Vicki was born April 1954. They had two more daughters, Joanne born August 1961 and Robyn, August 1963. Thechildren all went to Kulin School. John arrived home from Narrogin Agricultural College in 1965, and Celia and Jockbegan share farming for Phil and Kath Freebairn. They share farmed the property for ten years. John was called up tothe army, when he was twenty and spent his 21st birthday in Vietnam. Celia and Jock thanked God, he was broughthome safely. It was a hard time on the farm without John, so they moved to Kulin and Jock got a job on the Kulin Shire. After twenty years on the farm, it was sold, and they built a house in Kulin. When they moved to Kulin, they joined the bowling club in 1974; it was home away from home. Celia loved the bowlsand the friends she made. She won the singles championship six times over the years, and had been playing for 43years when she won the League Singles in 2003. Celia also won the pairs, threes and fours on many occasions, and anumber of wonderful wins with the Pennant Girls. A proud moment was becoming a Life Member in March 29, 2009.Bowls was played most weekends during the summer, including travelling to Gala and invitation days, sometimeswinning but always having a great time. It would be fair to say, it was a great love. Celia and Jock’s other love was travel. In 1987, they travelled around Australia with Jock’s brothers Jim and Harold andtheir wives, June and Edith. They camped along the way, using two way radios to keep in touch, free camping alongthe way, sharing the evening around the fire or playing cards. They had the most wonderful time. Celia and Jock got the travel bug after this, so for twenty seven years they travelled up North to Broome and PortSmith, to get away from the cold. The regulars that arrived each winter became their friends and they looked forward tocatching up each year. In summer, they travelled to Hopetoun, meeting up with many friends and family. Here they enjoyed the fishing, theregular bowls events and loved nothing more than sitting by the fire bucket at night, sharing stories. In between thesetrips they travelled to Tamworth for the Country Music Festival, and enjoyed many trips to Sydney and Tahmoor visitingVicki, John and family. Being idle wasn’t in Celia’s nature, so over the years she became a Girl Guide leader in Kulin, helping many girls obtaintheir badges. Then there was the love of decoupage, it was a family joke, that if you sat still too long gran woulddecoupage you! Then thirty years ago she became a senior Cit! A whole new world opened, with Celia and Jock joiningin with locals and they played indoor games, competing against other country clubs, travelling away each year todifferent towns. Spare days were filled up with card making, and playing Rummicub. Celia and her dear friend Ruth, played Rummicub any chance they could, enjoying many an afternoon together. Celia lead a quiet life, thankful for her friends and wonderful family. She loved her dear husband Jock, their family offive children, eleven grandchildren, and twenty four great gran children.

Thank you everyone for all your support, love and kindness always.

Thank you

I am happy to report that Golf is ticking along nicely despite the very brown surrounds.Numbers on the course have been excellent with some impressive scores with golfers taking

advantage of the flat surface and run on of the balls.

The club is gearing up for our coaching clinics which will be offered over the next threemonths. These are for children and adults so keep a look out for dates!

We have sticks for the kids to use so encourage them to come along. It is also a great wayfor beginners to experience the game and get some guidance so that you are starting off on

the right foot.

We also are into planning for our annual “Nona Wilson Memorial Ladies Open Day” so graba partner and head along for a great day on Wednesday May 29th. We are having a nine

hole friendship day for the ladies followed by lunch. We hope you can join us.

A big thank you to all those keen gardeners who travelled from Dudinin, Holt Rock,Karlgarin, Kulin, Lake King and Varley to enjoy a day in the splendid gardens of Kulin’s greenfingered ladies who are progressive innovative gardeners. The day began the nightbefore Wednesday 31st April when those who could, met in Kulin Hotel for dinner to meet andgreet each other. It was a lovely friendly evening of getting to know each other with muchchatter. The boys must have talked themselves out the previous evening as none showed for thegarden trail. Thursday 1st May an enthusiastic crowd of keen gardeners met at the home of Mrs Ellen Marcheito enjoy her lovely garden and share their passionate interest, awe and delight at “Ellen’s Studio’’Then a sumptuous morning tea was shared in the warm sun on the verandah of her home. Thankyou Ellen, it was delicious and the Studio has been a strong topic of interest ever since guessingmany plans and ideas are forming in heads and on paper throughout the area. Wow Mrs Dunham what a great display of roses in your so neat garden the colours and perfumewere a delight. Yes that is where we all ambled to next like gypsy’s on the trail. Mrs Dunham‘sgarden is truly lovely you could not count all the varieties of roses and the colours so vibrant. Ohand yes those Docker Ducks proudly displayed at the front made many a heart sing. Thank youMrs Dunham for sharing your lovely garden. The girls then ambled down to Mrs Wendy Gangell’s delightful garden with its little garden rooms, and treasure plants, nooks and delightful get away path for the “grandies”. Thank you so muchWendy. To all who were able to attend and to those great garden tenders thank you so much for not onlysharing your gardens but time and friendship. The Varley CWA and Garden Club so appreciated your kindness and all those cuttings you wereso willing to share. You are Bloomin great Thank you

THANK YOU

A1Round 1 4th MayGala day in Hyden: played well, going to be a tough season but we’re up for the challenge , lost 50-34, thankyou to Sarah (Justine’s sister) for filling in for us A1Round 2 11th MayNarembeen in narem - went down 48:30 - the play got better as the game went on! Once the play settled theteam flowed really well! Well done to our attacking girls! They moved extremely well in the circle! ThanksCorrina for playing for us. A2Round 2 11th MayOur first game of the season against Corrigin was a hot and fast game. With quite a few new players andladies returning it took a while to settle into their positions. Our defenders put up a good fight but had theirhands full with Corrigins strong attack. Cassi showed her strength in the centre court and our attack tried hardall game. Well done ladies. Welcome to our new and returning players Ed, Kat, Teneille, Belle. Corrigin 40Kulin 11 4TH May 2019 – Kulin 3 VS Bruce RockThis year we have increased our numbers to 10! Our junior side consists of: Shayley Rennie, Alexah Jenks,Lucy Scadding, Montana Dunlop, Tasmyn Griffiths, Stella Mullan, Amber McAdam, Brandy Dunlop, KaileyJenks and Zari Duckworth. Our first game was at Hyden for the Gala Day and what an awesome start to theseason! There were a few nerves from the players but they soon settled in nicely to the game coming awaywith a strong win 24-0! A fabulous team effort! The girls were definitely improving last year and having thatconsistency of players this year, certainly showed. Well done to Brandy and Zari who played their first gameof junior netball – they did so well! Player of the day went to Amber McAdam. I am looking forward to a funseason with the girls and watching them grow into fine young netballers! Thank you to Gemma who umpiredand Mel who timed...who has now learnt how long netball quarters are!Coach Lauren. 11TH May 2019 – Kulin 3 VS Narem 6 We ventured out to Narembeen today. It was a tough day for the girls coming up against some very tallexperienced competition. Kulin girls didn’t give up though and managed to get a few goals on the board so Iwas happy with that. The end result was 30-4 in Narembeen’s favour. After a couple of games it’s becomingclearer what we need to focus on at training so I’m looking forward to working on that. Well done to Kaileywho played her first game of junior netball today! Congratulations to Tasmyn Griffiths for receiving player ofthe day award. Thanks to Owen who timed and Michelle for umpiring.Coach Lauren.
