There are now more opportunities than ever to swim for free in Brent, thanks to funding from Central Government until 2011.

If you are aged 16 and under, or are over 60 or disabled then details of how you can swim for free are shown on the next few pages. There is information about other new swimming sessions which are being offered for free or cheaply in the borough, so please read on.......

FREE PUBLIC SWIMMING TIMES AT VALE FARM AND WILLESDEN SPORTS CENTRES

Free swimming is now available for disabled people, over 60’s and 16’s & Under during all public swimming sessions. During the school holidays there are more day time public swimming sessions which are particularly well attended by young people.

The tables on the next two pages show the times of public swimming sessions at Vale Farm and Willesden sports centres. Over 60’s and 16’s & Under must have completed a free swimming registration form and present their free swimming card on each visit in order to swim for free. Disabled people must show their Brent Council Disabled Registration Card issued by Social Services (yellow certificate of registration card) at the centre’s reception to be able to swim for free.

Timetables may change during the school holidays and over the year. Please check details at the sports centre or online at www.brent.gov.uk/freeswimming

SWIMMING FOR THE OVER 60’s

These sessions are for men and women aged sixty and over. They will help you learn to swim or regain your swimming confidence so that you can make full use of the free public swimming sessions. Swimming costumes must be worn.

LEARN TO SWIM / RETURN TO SWIMMING FOR OVER 60’S

These courses are for over 60’s who are complete beginners or who have not swam for a while and would like some additional support.

Places are limited and need to be booked in advance so please contact the sports centres direct. These are structured courses which last for a school term with a break at half term.

‘DROP IN’ AQUA-AEROBICS FOR OVER 60’S

These sessions allow you to exercise in water in a fun and friendly environment. It is very low impact and you don’t need to be able to swim to take part but new participants should introduce themselves to the instructor on their first visit.These are ‘drop in’ sessions so you just turn up on the day and join in, however the number of places available each day is limited. The sessions do not run during school holidays. Swimming costumes must be worn.

‘DROP IN’ MINI WATER POLO - At Vale Farm Sports Centre Only

These instructor led sessions will teach the basics of this Olympic sport. You will learn passing, defending, shooting and scoring goals and may progress onto playing mini water polo matches. All water polo equipment is provided.These are ‘drop in’ sessions so you just turn up on the day and join in. It is not a structured course however the number of places available each day is limited.

Age: 8 to 16 years. Participants must have basic water confidence skills.Cost: Free. A 16’s & Under free swimming registration form must be completed.Dates & Time: The sessions run all year round on Saturdays from 10.30am until 11.30am.

‘DROP IN’ SNORKELLING - At Vale Farm Sports Centre Only

These instructor led sessions will teach the basics of snorkelling and lead to fun underwater games. Snorkels, flippers and masks are provided.These are ‘drop in’ sessions so you just turn up on the day and join in. It is not a structured course however the number of places available each day is limited.

Age: 8 to 16 years. Participants must have basic water confidence skills.Cost: Free. A 16’s & Under free swimming registration form must be completed.Dates & Time: The sessions run all year round on Saturdays from 11.30am until 12.30pm

NATIONAL POOL LIFEGUARD QUALIFICATION - At Vale Farm Sports Centre Only

Learn how to become a qualified lifeguard and open up opportunities for potential employment. This course is seven days long and you must be available for all ses-sions. It is an intensive course but an excellent opportunity as the course is being subsidised by 50%.You must be able to swim 100 metres without stopping in 4 minutes to be eligible for this course.Places are limited and must be booked in advance so please contact Vale Farm Sports Centre.

Age: 16 to 19 yearsCost : £100 per personDates & Time: Sunday 25 to Saturday 31 October 2009, each day from 8.30am to 5.00pm.

HOLIDAY CRASH COURSES

During the school holidays a number of short week-long courses are organised at both Vale Farm Sports Centre and Willesden Sports Centre. Activities could include swimming lessons for beginners and improvers, stroke master-classes and other water activities such as snorkelling, rookie lifeguards and parent and toddler sessions. These activities change each holiday so please contact the centres prior to the holidays for up to date information or check online at www.brent.gov.uk/freeswimming.

OTHER FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES

Willesden and Vale Farm Sports Centres hope to organise even more free or subsidised swimming sessions. Such activities may include indoor canoeing, mini diving (flip and fun), mini water polo, women only National Pool Lifeguard Course and other activities. SWIMMING FOR FAMILIES

PARENT AND TODDLER SESSIONSMums, Dad’s or carers go in the water with their child to help develop their child’s water confidence through fun games and singing. Basic swimming techniques are also taught. Sessions take place in the shallow end of the teaching pool. Swimming costumes are to be worn over swimming nappies. Swimming nappies can be purchased from most supermarkets and sports centre receptions.Parents / carers go in the water and must also wear swimming costumes but don’t have to be able to swim.

All courses MUST be booked in advance at the reception where the activity will take place i.e. at Vale Farm Sports Centre or Willesden Sports Centre. Places are limited on all courses and for drop in sessions.If a term has already started it may be possible for you to still join if only a few weeks of the course have taken place – please contact the centre to enquire.

PAYMENTCourses where a payment of £5 is required must be made at Vale Farm Sports Centre reception. At the end of the course, those who have attended the majority of course sessions will receive a voucher equivalent to £5 for use towards the cost of other activities at Vale Farm Sports Centre.

Cycle Routes:

• Cycle Route 86 (Watford Road – Sudbury Court Drive) links Vale Farm from the west via Bengeworth Road, Elms Lane and Homefield Road continuing into the Sports Centre via a signed link.

• Cycle Route 45 goes past North Wembley station and links the Sports Centre from the north via East Lane and Woodfield Avenue and through the playing fields.

• From Harrow Road to the south, a quieter route links the Sports Centre via Copland or Crawford Avenue, Harrowdene Road, Sylvester Road, Charterhouse Avenue and Eton Avenue.

Bus Services:

• Bus Routes 182 and 245 stop near the tube station and in front of the railway station and stop in Watford Road near the approach road to Vale Farm Sports Centre.

• Kensal Rise station is less than 1km from the Sports Centre. Bus routes 52, 302 and 187 stop in front of the station and provide a direct connection to and from the Sports Centre.

• Dollis Hill station is approximately 1.6km

away but can be directly accessed on the 226 bus route.

Free Swimming all year round for 16 years and under at Vale Farm and Willesden Sports CentreCentral Government is funding a two year initiative to encourage 16’s and under to develop a healthier lifestyle. They are doing this by providing free swimming at Vale Farm and Willesden Sports Centres during all public swimming sessions from April 2009. All 16’s and under are eligible - you just need to complete a registration form, get your parent/carer to sign it and provide proof of your age, so register now. Please complete this form and hand into reception to be able to swim for free.
