Please remember to bring supporting evidence: • Aged 19 and over and resident in the UK/EEA (European Economic Area) or dependants

Please contact HALS Reception on 0208 489 2596/2523. Please note: Telephone enrolments are only available between 4.00pm–7.00pm for the following courses: MS Office Skills Workshops.
Each subject assessment takes approximately 45 minutes therefore if you are taking two assessments and completing the writing sample this could take up to 2 hours.

ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages Who are our ESOL courses for? If you are a citizen of the UK or a country within the European Economic Area or have lived in either of these for at least the last three years then you should be eligible for UK government funding for your ESOL course. Those with certain types of immigration status such as refugee status, discretionary, exceptional or indefinite leave to enter/remain are also usually eligible. ESOL courses are designed for people whose first language is not English. We offer courses from complete beginners (Pre-Entry) to Level 1. Each course will help you study at a level that is appropriate for you and aims to:
• Help you with everyday life in the UK from shopping to going to the doctors or dealing with schools and services;
• Develop your English skills to get a job or improve your work prospects; • Provide you with a qualification in English; • Enable you to progress to an academic or vocational course.
What do we offer? Our provision caters for a range of skills and abilities through a comprehensive range of accredited and non-accredited courses from Basic Beginners Pre-Entry to Upper Intermediate Level 1.
We offer: • English classes on site, in schools and in the community • Parenting and Wellbeing classes for ESOL; • Class sizes of no more than 16 people; • Morning, afternoon or evening classes are available; • The opportunity to develop your speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation,
computing and study skills; • Citizenship, British Values, employability, and safeguarding are embedded in all of our ESOL courses; • A Skills for Life qualification at the end of the course covering reading, writing, listening and speaking,
accredited through Ascentis. Are the courses free? Yes, if you are studying on an accredited course and you are receiving Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) – Work Related Activity Group

How much do courses cost?
Fully funded £0
Co-Funded with Concessions (£1.50ph) + exam fee where applicable
Co-funded /No Conc (£3.15ph) + exam fee where app
• Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - Work - Related Activity Group • Income Support • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) with ESA • Universal Credit and earning less than 16 times national minimum wage per week. • Other state benefits (usually income support) and earning less than 16 times national minimum wage per week. *currently £7.50 for 24s and over but subject to change Learners need to show evidence and tick that they are “unemployed/working under 16 hours and looking for a job” on the enrolment form.
Household income under £19,000 For example, this would include: People who are employed on low income
• People on Universal Credit and not covered in column 1.
• People on pension credits/state pension/other benefits with an annual household income under £19,000
• Working Tax Credit
Asylum seekers cannot get free courses but HALS may be able to help ESOL learners apply for a grant to cover the concessionary fee.
Learners self-declare by ticking the household income box.

All learners must pay for exams unless on in receipt of JSA, ESA, Universal Credit.
Crèche Fees We offer crèche facilities at Northumberland Park School. Crèche fees are not available at the time of printing, further information will be provided by staff when you enrol for a course.
Progression Each level is divided into three stages over the academic year, although students may join a class at the beginning of any term. Most students remain at a level for a year before progressing to the next. Non accredited courses act as a stepping stones to enable learners to gain the necessary skills to achieve an exam. We also offer a range of additional skills and grammar workshops to support your success and achievement. Once you have reached Level 1, there are opportunities to progress on to other HALS courses, further education, volunteering or employment.
How can I enrol?
How do I start? All students must take undertake an initial assessment before joining a class to enrol them on the most appropriate course. ESOL enrolment days are held at Wood Green Library at various times throughout the year.
We run ESOL Initial assessments sessions at the beginning of each term at the times and dates advertised below then every Friday at 10 am until half term. Please arrive promptly at the start of your chosen session. We operate a first come, first served basis. However, attending an initial assessment does not guarantee a place on a course. Whilst we will try and place you on the course, you may be placed on waiting list for the next available course at your level.

Family Learning
Family Learning Free classes
Family Learning classes are aimed at parents and carers who wish to develop their own skills as well as learn strategies on how to best support their child’s education to reach full potential. Family Learning classes are free and take place in selected children’s centres and schools in Haringey.
• Opportunity for parents/carers and children to learn together; • Support your child to learn through play and develop learning resources; • Learn strategies to support the development of your child’s reading skills and improve your
understanding of the school curriculum and expectations; • Learn fun ways to support your child with learning maths; • Share ideas with other parents and develop your own skills and much more;
To find out the details of HALS Family Learning courses and venues, please ask for details at HALS reception or call on 020 8489 2596 /2523. You may also wish to contact your child’s school to find out what classes are on offer.
Parents Toolkit A series of workshops that offer positive ways of parenting for the present day challenges. You will learn how to build strong and secure families and support your children as a team as well as on their own. All workshops are based on the coaching model and take place at various schools and children centres.
Help your child develop self-esteem and confidence; How to deal with your child’s worries and fears; How to deal with your child’s anger; How to help your child to deal with changes; Help your child to deal with disturbed sleep patterns; How to deal with your child’s challenging behaviour; Building strong and secure families;
Children’s Centres Learning Hubs Children’s Centres Learning Hubs provide information and coordinate adult learning offer in in each area. There are four hubs across Haringey covering the five Children’s Centres planning areas: Welbourne, Rowland Hill, Woodside and Downhills Site. Children’s Centres offer parents and carers looking after children under 5 the opportunity to join a range of classes to support child’s development. Local School Family Learning Hub The Learning Centre at Risley Avenue Primary School is open to parents from other local schools to join HALS Family Learning courses designed to help you support children from Reception to Year 2. You will learn about the school curriculum and develop your own English communication at the same time. For up to date details please call HALS reception on 020 8489 2596 /2523.
Progression from Family Learning You will be supported by Family Learning tutors to continue on your learning journey. You will be encouraged to progress and enrol on an accredited ESOL, Functional English, Maths or ICT course to

develop your skills further and work towards a nationally recognised qualification at Wood Green Library or at Northumberland Park Community School (N17).
