Hosted by Dover District Council, Up on the Downs is working with local communities, groups and organisations to conserve and celebrate the landscape and heritage of the Dover and Folkestone area. BOOKING
Not required unless stated otherwise. Please call 01304 872 785 to book your place. For a few events, you will needtocalladifferentnumberand this will be given in the event information.
CLOTHING
We have ordered the weather for a Great British summer. If the sun does shine, please come prepared with water, sun cream and a hat. If the weather isn’t so good, then please bring waterproofs.
Many of our events will be enjoyed more in strong, comfortable footwear. Some of the terrain may be rough, steep and muddy.
WEATHER
Whatever the weather, an event leader will be at the meeting place and will decide whether to proceed or not.
CHARGES
Most events are free. However, some of our partners ask for a small donation towards the
cost of the event.
DOGS
Dogs are welcome if they are kept under control and on a lead, except at events which state that no dogs are allowed.

HISTORY
These events will leave you fascinated by our local heritage. Watch a play about Dover during WW1, follow in the footsteps of our Bronze Age ancestors, marvel at Roman life and learn more about the area’s impressive military history.
ARTS
Get creative at an arts event! With the help of local artists, try your hand at street art or paint the stunning cloudscapes from Samphire Hoe. Test out your photography skills at the Western Heights or make your own fossil in Folkestone!
WILDLIFE
From crabs and crickets to flowersandfossils,morethana dozen events will give you the chance to learn about the wonderful animals and plants that live alongside us. Brush up youridentificationskills,learnabout their lifestyles and meet them for yourself!

One of the big events of the fortnight, this will be a fun-packed family day! There’ll be a local farmer and her sheep, a travelling theatre performing a play about shepherding, a dog show with a livestock friendly theme and lots of Forest School activities to get stuck into. There will also be tree trails, arts and craft stands, tractors, model boating, sports, local produce stalls and many other activities. This remote and lonely landscape was once home to the fighting Knights of Jerusalem, and one of the largest Minnisses in Kent. A minnis was common land used as pasture, but now only a fraction of it remains. This Victorian lighthouse is a landmark of the
White Cliffs and the first in the world to use
electric light. Marconi used the lighthouse

Samphire Hoe was created from the spoil
left by the creation of the Channel Tunnel.

These livestock have to be checked every day to make sure
that they are not injured and haven’t escaped. If you can spare

provides opportunities for all to enjoy the landscape and work
with horses. There are a range of opportunities from working in
the community therapeutic garden, regular mowing of lawns

If you have a passion for history and love talking to people,
there are a number of volunteering opportunities available at
Dover Castle. Help to bring the medieval history of the Great
Tower alive for visitors, inspire people with the role that the
castle played during the First World War, and take part in a
gun drill re-enactment to fire a genuine WW1 anti-aircraft gun.

The Land Trust is always looking for enthusiastic and
committed people who want to make a difference in their
community. Opportunities cover research, conservation,
maintenance and events. If you have a particular skill or area
of knowledge, you may want to lead or help with activities and
workshops.
Get involved with the work of the Bay Trust helping at the
Pines Garden. We are seeking hands-on volunteers for
general gardening and food growing, practising permaculture
principles. There is also an intern programme for people who
wish to gain experience in sustainable construction.
