CELEBRATING SUMMER As we brave the hardest drought in many years and hope for much needed rain there are many who have de-lighted in enjoying a quintes-sential Central Otago summer. BRINGING BRONZE The New Zealand Curling Association hosted the 2015 Pacific Asia Junior Curling Championships in Naseby in January. Teams travelled from China, Korea, Japan and Australia to play against our NZ Junior teams.

Positively Maniototo joined the spectators (above), score keepers and organisers in the viewing lounge on the first day of competition. It’s quiet, there’s a certain expectation that there will be no sudden outbursts by the crowd (no matter how hard that was on some of the parents). However, on the ice a couple of the competitors make themselves known quickly with their loud method of urging their teammates to SWEEEEEEEEEP or yelling at the stone right up until it is dead still (hopefully on the pot lid after all that!).

A huge amount of effort goes into hosting an international event such as this. The ice masters are integral, time keep-ers, hog line officials and the volunteers a must. Overall everyone reported a successful week of international level curling at its best.

The young men's team consisted of all Maniototo locals—Simon Neilson (skip), Luke Steele, Matthew Neilson, Josh Fogo and Josh Whyte (alternate).

The girls team (below) was made up of our own Holly Thompson (centre) and Jessica Smith (far right) as well as Eleanor Adviento, Eloise Pointon and Waverlyanne Taylor. The young ladies managed to secure bronze medals in a hard fought competition. Congratulations!

PAKEKE LIONS ANNUAL TOURNAMENT Friday January 9th saw another successful Maniototo Pakeke Lions Club Annual Bowling Tournament held at the Ranfurly Bowling Club.

There were 18 teams competing which meant that there were 72 players trying to endure the intense heat of the af-ternoon.

The Club was extremely grateful for the wonderful sponsor-ship by local businesss and individuals. Overall they were able to raise in excess of $800 which, when added to the potato project money, will be used to purchase something special for the Chalet

HAPPY NEW YEAR The pipes were out again as Jock Scott, Ewan Mason, friend Lee, Bailey Dowling and Mark Smith toured various Mani-ototo establishments on New Years Eve to raise money for the food bank scheme in Ranfurly. Bailey and Mark are stu-dents of Ewan and it was their first public appearance and they did very well!. They raised $920 from the public and they’d like to thank you all for your support.

TIME FOR TENNIS

A successful and fun doubles tennis tournament was held at Patearoa on 30 December. In perfect conditions for ten-nis a full field of sixteen played entertaining and fiercely competitively timed matches for the inaugural Patearoa Classic title. The players included local and Dunedin people along with an English visitor.

Winners of the pools were Peter Dick and Neil Sutherland and Tom and Gayle Elliott, with the final being won by Richard Bourne and Derek King. A barbecue along with a prize giving followed the event which is expected to be-come an annual fixture with players already securing their places to play in, and promising much practise before, the 2015 event.

Grateful thanks to the sponsors Jim and Sue Hore, Greg and Kelly Kirkwood, AMP Insurance and Hunter Stevenson OFS Insurance Brokers.

PATEAROA PLAYGROUP Mary Heaney from REAP will be taking playgroup at Pat-earoa on the 3rd Monday of each month 10am - 12 midday.

WHEN THE SIREN SOUNDS We never want to hear it go off but when the siren in Ranfurly goes eve-ryone stops for a moment and si-lently we worry. Our stomachs turn. Wonder what’s hap-pened? More often than not, given we are a small commu-nity, we will know who an emergency has affected.

Seconds after the siren sounds Sam Millar bolts from PGG, the Baddock father and son team are close by so they’re in, Kieran Mulholland whizzes past the Challenge garage so he’s on board, the Pioneer Generation van means Ewan is available, Dave Millar never has far to go coming from Great Southern, Fred comes from Farmlands … it’s all on.

The truck sirens start, they must all be in. Both fire trucks have gone out, water tanker too, plus back up vehicle. It’s definitely another fire. From the moment the siren has gone off to the trucks leaving the station is literally well under 5 minutes. It’s incredible and an absolutel credit to our community to be able to maintain such a service.

The Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade is calling all mums, dads and grandparents. There are six positions available to be filled. So, if you are keen to join a trusted community based organisation there are support and fire fighting roles available.

It would be an advantage to be Ranfurly based during the day. For details contact RVFB Chief Fire Officer - James Hazlett on 027 2740088 or 03 4449 857

BURN729AM UPDATE Denise Baddock

The team is back to business here at Burn for the 2015 year, we hope everybody had a great Christmas and New Year. Plenty has been happening in and around the Maniototo over the last two months, beautiful weather, visitors by the score and activities galore.

Thank you to all the families and listeners that supported our ‘12 Days of Christmas’ pro-motion. Congratulations to Sylvia Carson the overall win-ner of the Christmas promo. Santa’s Grotto (Laura and Grace Paterson pictured left with Santa) and the Burn 729am Pool Party (below) were an awesome effort.

Also ongoing donations received from individuals and community events over recent weeks are very much ap-preciated, thank you.

A huge thank you to all the people who supported the ‘Combined Support Network Food Bank Drive’, another successful collection. The hampers were very well re-ceived and appreciated by the recipients.

We are now into our ‘Summer Promotion’ here at the station, with our orange jandal placed strategically in and around the Maniototo. This will run until Sunday 22nd of February, with the

overall winner announced on Monday 23rd. Listen to Burn for details and be in to win.

Have a business that you would like to advertise? Don’t forget we have very competitive rates and a price sched-ule available for your convenience.

It’s time to revamp and update all the community group happenings and events for 2015 in ‘Positively Maniototo’ Burn Budget, and the community notices here on Burn729am. For a gold coin donation we are happy to update this information for your community group, or your advertising requirements, contact Amie 03 444 9993 or myself on 03 444 9729, or email your informa-tion or enquiries to burn729am @scorch.co.nz

TRAIL ‘BEST IN NEW ZEALAND’ Paul Taylor from the William Angliss Institute in Melbourne is currently studying towards his PHD by spending a month on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Paul (below) is conducting a comparative study focusing on long distance cycle ways and what drives their success.

With a tourism and hospitality background Paul has been a tour guide, a diving instructor and has worked for Intrepid Travel. He says, ‘The move across to education has been very interesting. The study will run through until completion at the end of 2016. I am interviewing as many people as possible including Rail Trail Operators. The role of commu-nity in driving the trail is very prevalent. The model of the Otago Central Rail Trail is different to ours in Victoria. Here it’s more of a bottom up approach whereas back home is very much top down as they are owned mainly by Councils. I chose to study your trail is because it really is the best in New Zealand and compares closely to trails in Victoria in-cluding Murray to Mountains Rail Trail (below) and the Katy Trail in the USA.’

Paul notes that trail surface is always an issue in Australia too as funding is always a big topic. Of interest too is that the Great Victorian Trail, given its length, also crosses multi-ple regional councils and this has lead to its own challenges.

The study will be applied which is important to Paul. ‘The National Rail Trail Association in Australia will take on the document. It will need to be published within the academic community five times which can be a long process as uptake can be difficult but it’s all part of the PHD process.’

Paul will do the Otago Central Rail Trail a total of three times within the month.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS FOR HOSPICE An overnight cycling challenge will take place on Waitangi Day, Friday 6th February where a group from Dunedin will ride from Middlemarch to Alexandra in a bid to raise $40,000 for Otago Community Hospice.

The cycling challenge begins around 5pm in Middlemarch and will continue through the night to Alexandra.

There will be support crews with bike trail-ers, water, hot drinks and food along the entire Rail trail to keep an eye on all challengers.

A 30 minutes rest stop is scheduled for around 9pm in Ran-furly and they have a planned meal stop at Lauder where there will be an evening meal supplied and a chance for eve-ryone to meet up, relax and refuel.

When they finish the challenge there will be a breakfast sup-plied in Alexandra and a bus to take everyone back to Dune-din.

The aim of the challenge is to raise funds for the Otago Com-munity Hospice while enjoying a fun and rewarding mental and physical challenge.

So keep an eye out for bikes riding the Rail Trail through the night and give them a cheer for a great cause!

RUNINNG FOR PEACE Adventure Runner Katsuhiko ‘KAY’ Takashige of Japan started running for PEACE in 2012 when he ran across Ja-pan. He then ran across America in a personal challenge to run 40,000km (25,000 miles) Around The World through five continents. Kay has now run across Australia and is running through Auckland to Invercargill via Ranfurly (and the Otago Central Rail Trail)!

In January Suzy and Bill at The Old Post Office Backpackers enjoyed meeting Kay and hearing his pledge for PEACE as well as his many stories of his adventures. Good luck to him!

ART ON THE RAIL TRAIL

Dates: Friday, 6 February - Tueesday, 7 April 2015 10am - 4pm.

Welcome to Art on the Rail Trail! The Central Otago District Arts Trust and the Otago Central Rail Trail Trust have worked together to showcase the art of our talented Cen-tral Otago artists all along the Rail Trail. Cafes, hotels and galleries between Clyde and Middlemarch each feature mini solo art exhibitions by our artists as part of this eight week long group event. Art on the Rail Trail opens on Friday 6th of February, Waitangi weekend 2015 and ends after Easter in April 2015.

This is peak season for the Rail Trail operators so it is antici-pated Art on the Rail Trail will be a wonderful experience for Rail Trail riders and the art loving public. The event of-fers an opportunity for participating artists to raise their profile and the chance to showcase their art to a much wider audience (and hopefully sell their work).

The Otago Central Rail Trail enjoys a large volume of visitors participating in this classic ride. The Rail Trail is well known as being high on visitors ‘must do’ list. This event takes art to where tourists already are rather than them having to go off trail to find the artists.

We hope Art on the Rail Trail is enjoyed by all and becomes an annual happening on our cultural calendar. Katsuhiko Takashige at The Old Post Office Backpackers during his 40,000km

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Positively Maniototo caught up with Geoff Morrow while he was staying with Mum Francie over Christmas.

What is your link to Maniototo? I grew up in the Maniototo, attended school at Wedderburn, St Johns then right through at the Maniototo Area school.

What did you do when here? Started off work on the irrigation scheme at Paerau, then onto the building of the tunnel at Paerau. I spent a bit of time in the shearing sheds and working on my Uncle’s farms at Gimmerburn before working away with Doug Hood Earth Movers at Huntly and Granity. Weekends were spent fishing, hunting, playing rugby and cricket in Maniototo and Central Otago. The good times ...

Where are you now? Currently living in Perth, Western Australia, working a FiFo (fly in fly out) job in the mining industry as a Mill Foreman with a small mining company. I enjoy the challenges of the day to day running of the processing of gold and then look forward to spending time with my family on rostered days off.

What do you miss the most about the Maniototo? I miss the fishing and hunting (especially the duck shooting) and spending time at the Dougherty farm. I always look for-ward to catching up with cousins and friends and mates that I grew up with and travelled overseas with over a cold Speight's or two when I'm back here.

Maniototo will always be home for me.

Geoff with his daughters Hannah 3rys and Kayli 5yrs.

STEADY AS YOU GO Falls are the most common cause of injury to our senior citizens. One third of people over the age of 65 fall each year; half of people over 80. Falls in older people are often associated with weak leg muscles and poor balance.

Falls are not a natural part of ageing. Falls are preventable. Save yourself from a fall by attending SAYGo classes to im-prove your strength and balance. The classes are designed for men and women and have been shown to provide con-tinuous improvements in strength and balance over time.

Ranfurly classes start Thursday 19th February at 10.30am in the St John Ambulance Rooms. It’s only $2 per session. Contact the Hospital receptionist on 444 9420.

CHEQUE? CHECK! At a relaxed meeting (below) the Patearoa Golf Club re-ceived a very exciting Christmas gift. A cheque for $68,000 was presented to President Shane O’Neill by Barclay Hall (Trustee for the late Alan Wilson).

The Patearoa Bowling Club, Chalet and Hospital also re-ceived donations.

If you’ve never entered the show before we encourage you to pick up a schedule (right) and give it a go. Whether it’s a favour-ite photograph or that well kept jam recipe handed down through the generations - give it a go!

The show is a chance for the community to gather together for a day out.

There is also a Facebook page you can join to be kept up with what’s happening on the day. Just search Maniototo A & P As-sociation.

A reminder that the local schools are given half a day off to come on down to the show grounds and enjoy the day.

GIFT LAMB COMPETITION The Maniototo Gift Lamb Competition will again be held in conjunction with the A&P Show on the 18th of February. The competition comprises three classes - fine wool, strong wool and terminal. Entry is three lambs and the value of the three lambs combined is collated. The money raised goes to health services in the Maniototo. In the past few years the money has gone to help computerise the X-Ray machine, bought a hoist and sanitiser for the hospital/chalet and, last year, a high spec clinical defibrillator for the hospital. This project is for a very good cause and worthy of your support.

MANIOTOTO IRRIGATION SCHEME 30 YEAR CELEBRATIONS On October 27th 1976 the Otago Daily Times reported: “Eighty years of dreams, schemes and abortive plans for a Maniototo irrigation scheme finally took shape on a windswept paddock near the Gimmerburn Hall yesterday afternoon, as the Minister of Works and Development, the Hon W. L. Young cut a swathe of topsoil with a huge motor-scraper. It was a gala occasion for the district, with about 600 people braving the icy wind and the odd flurry of snow to march in procession from the hall, across the sports ground to see the first sod turned on the $6 million scheme. The chairman of the Maniototo Irrigation Committee, Mr G. K. Paterson said the day was a great one for the district, because the scheme would bring progress and prosperity to a large area. However, he made it clear to the Minister that his committee would want to see a flow of Government money, on a regular basis, to make the flow of water through the irrigation races a reality.”

Eight years later water was flowing through the large race system of the west side of the Scheme, supplying about 4000 hec-tares of previously dry land. It had been the largest, most expensive and most controversial public works project ever under-taken in the area.

While there had been some celebration at the earlier official opening of the scheme, attended by the Prime Minister of the day, David Lange, it was muted by disappointment that only 40% of the project had been completed, leaving the east side and the Waipiata sections dry. The original cost estimates of $6.2 million had blown out to actual costs of around $26 million with a further $13 million estimated to complete the scheme. Not surprisingly, the government had abandoned further work on the project in 1983, leaving farmers on the dry areas to lodge claims for compensation, and those in the irrigated areas to fight to limit the high water charges resulting from the cost over runs.

The scheme is certainly cause for Maniototo to celebrate, but its development has been a saga of many stages, making it diffi-cult to pinpoint a single red letter day. The commissioning of the west side was “perhaps the end of the beginning”. Over the next decade, the farmers in the original section would form an Incorporated Society and contract to operate and maintain the scheme themselves with massive cost savings. Within a couple of years, the success of this model was noted by Treasury who then recommended that all community schemes be sold to the farmer clients. The Maniototo Irrigation Com-pany (MIC) was formed in 1989 and the scheme was purchased for $1.00. Around the same time east side and Waipiata com-panies were formed and private contracts were let for the completion of the race system for about 10% of the 1983 esti-mates. In 2001 MIC was restructured and the West Side Company was formed to allow shared ownership of the head works by three distribution companies. In 2014 the Loganburn Dam was raised by a further 800mm bringing total storage capacity to near 100 million cubic metres.

Today the scheme is a key component of local primary production adding value to Maniototo assets in excess of $100 million. The Loganburn Dam is an important recreational and aesthetic feature which allows the scheme to maintain a higher than natural low flow in the Taieri River. It is a magnificent community asset and The Maniototo Irrigation Company will be host-ing a Picnic and Gala Day on Sunday the 1st of March for the Maniototo Community to celebrate this milestone

TIME OF MY LIFE Colleen Hollows Late last year I was privileged enough to attend Outward Bound. I can honestly say it was the funniest, hardest, happi-est and saddest 21 days of my life. I was forced to face many fears including: heights, claustrophobia, the dark and open ocean. I could count on my fellow Kupe watch mates being there for me and encouraging me every step of the way!

Everything was go go go right from the start! Within the first 20 minutes of getting to know each other we were lying in mud and rubbing it on each others faces. There were 3.2km runs at 6:30am, breakfast at 7:30am and assembly at 8:20am. Our mornings were full on and made me realise how much time I waste by sleeping in till 10:30am most mornings. The activities we did over the 21 days included tramping, kayaking, sailing, rock climbing, navigation and how could I forget the 21.2km run on day 20. Never could I picture myself finishing half a marathon!

Outward Bound was the BEST 21 DAYS OF MY LIFE!!! I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

OUT AND ABOUT RSA NEWS We would like to thank everyone who took the time to come in November and see the Exhibition dedicated to the young men who left the Maniototo to serve their country in the first world war. A big thank you also to those that pur-chased hand made poppies and commemoration badges to help with our fundraising. There will be another fundraising evening on Friday 13th March at the Ranfurly Hotel raffle night. We are appealing to the public to help us by offering raffle prizes and/or coming along on the night. Money raised is to go towards the refurbishment of the Ranfurly cenotaph and dedication plaque.

Anzac Day this year will be a commemoration of our New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on Gallipoli Peninsu-lar on 25th April 100 years ago. The dawn service, dedication at the cenotaph, and the family service will all be held in Ranfurly this year, followed by a morning tea. The Mani-ototo RSA are asking for expressions of assistance from Ran-furly residents to help provide the morning tea. This can come from individuals, groups, or organisations. Please con-tact Bonnie Smith on 444 9932 to register your willingness to help or to provide a raffle prize.

Times for the Anzac Day services will be advertised in the March edition of Positively Maniototo.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Advertorial

Jan and Grant Bean (right) bought the Old Doctor’s Residence in Naseby nine years ago and built it into a prof-itable business that compliments a unique Maniototo lifestyle. Amie Pont caught up with them both as they move on to their next adventure ….

Like many, you made a choice to move to the Maniototo. What brought you here?

“After cycling the Rail Trail and selling our businesses in Auckland nearly ten years ago we decided it was time to explore the South Island. The Rail Trail, the Pinot Noir and the stunning landscapes attracted us espe-cially to Central Otago. We planned to play golf, ride our bikes, pick fruit, work on a vineyard and explore from a base in Naseby. That didn’t quite happen … instead with the urg-ings of Tourism Central Otago we transformed the Doctor’s Residence in Naseby into luxury bed and breakfast accom-modation, the first in Central.

It was difficult at the start as the existing Rail Trail Operators did not appreciate that there were tourists and Rail Trailers looking for accommodation where they would be ‘pampered’ and would not have to share toilets and facilities with other guests. We decided to provide the best beds and best breakfasts in Central.” In 2010 they were awarded the Central Otago Tourism Award and in 2013 became the first Qualmark 4 star plus Boutique and Lodge accommodation in Central Otago.

What is the history of The Old Doctors Residence?

“The house was originally a gold miner’s cottage constructed of timber in the early 1870s. Later that decade it became the doctor’s residence. In the 1880s, a mud brick section was added and then in the early 1900s came the timbered villa section. It is held seamlessly together by the three hall-ways which are used as a gallery to display the works of Cen-tral Otago artists. At present the boutique accommodation wing contains the Parker’s Suite, the Dansey’s Room and a guest lounge all of which are importantly separate from our kitchen, bedroom and lounge area.”

So you’ve both decided to move on (but not far) - what next?

“Yes, we’re onto our latest project of building in Alexandra. We couldn’t leave Central Otago.”

This is the opportunity then for someone to purchase The Old Doctor’s Residence.

“Certainly is. With the advent of new Rail Trail operators and the establishment of two beautifully restored heritage accommodations - Oliver’s in Clyde and Pitches Store in Ophir, business at The Old Doctor’s Residence has begun to flourish. So much so that it now needs some new owners to capitalise on the potential that we have created.

We have always run the residence as a lifestyle business taking a limited number of guests each month and only operating for four to six months of the year. Now there is a demand to be open for most of the year and to take more guests. We’re ready to retire for good and would love to see someone take it over. However, if there’s someone out there who would like it just as a home then we’re open to that too.”

Property/Business details

There are two superior rooms with private bathrooms available for guests, who also share a separate guest lounge with library, television, music, wireless internet, and tea and coffee making facilities. The owner’s accommoda-tion provides two bedrooms with a bathroom and lounge, allowing privacy for both operators and guests.

Initially 80% of business came from the Rail Trail, however this is now changing so that now at least 50% of their guests are independent, national and international clients who are demanding luxury accommodation.

A new owner will have the option to either continue this business plan and enjoy a similar lifestyle or to take up the challenge to grow the business by operating all year round; by supplying evening meals and accepting walk-in clientele. Registered GST buyers would have the option to claim back the GST portion if they so wished.

To purchase this beautiful slice of Maniototo history for $595,000 including buildings and business and chattels please call Sarah Smith at Southern Wide Real Estate on 027 662 6209.

RANFURLY CLINIC HAPPENINGS As many of you will already know there are some staffing changes that have taken place within the Ranfurly clinic in January.

But for those of you who saw the advertisement in the De-cember edition of the Positively Maniototo for a receptionist and are wondering what is happening, here is a run-down. Rachel Andrews who has (in general) been the first face to greet you as you entered the Ranfurly clinic for the past 10 years has gained an internal promotion and is now the Clinic Coordinator for the Ranfurly, Alexandra and Cromwell clin-ics.

Rachel has been a member of the VetEnt (formerly Central Vets) team for in excess of 21 years after securing a nursing role in the Ranfurly clinic in 1991. After just under 5 years in that role she moved to the Alexandra branch to further de-velop her skills and while in that clinic held various positions from Receptionist through to Clinic Manager. In 2001 Ra-chel moved to Invercargill to take on other challenges in the industry and worked for Landbase/Greenfields in both Inver-cargill and Timaru, before moving to Dunedin to run the “Bulk Barn” for Wrightson. She returned to the Central Vets Alexandra clinic in 2004 and then returned to Ranfurly clinic in 2005.

Rachel’s new role will involve a lot of travel between the clinics and therefore requires a full time receptionist in the Ranfurly clinic.

This position has now been filled, and we are excited to wel-come Sara Reveley to the team. Sara hails originally from a sheep and beef farm near Mt Somers in Mid-Canterbury, but has lived in the Maniototo for the past 3 years. During her time here she has embraced the community and many of you will already know Sara from Young Farmers, or from the various farm positions she has held in the area. Sara has worked within the Sheep & Beef sector and the Dairy sector in recent years, most recently as an Artificial Breeding Assis-tant with LIC.

We are sure that you will all join us in welcoming Sara to the VetEnt team.

Jane Falconer presents her CLACHANBURN COMMENT January has been like a good old Central Otago summer like we used to experience in the 60’s and 70’s, hot dry sunny days, sometimes with wind but no rain. It is lovely for holi-day makers and school children but certainly not good for farmers and gardeners.

Let us cut to the chase and note what we can do in these conditions to help protect our plants.

Try to water in the early morning or evening when there will be less evaporation.

When you do need to mow the lawns lift the height of the mower up a few notches.

Select what is most important to you, and if you have young plants they will require regular watering, as will plants in pots.

A hand held hose will go further than sprinklers.

Cut back perennials to take some stress off them, and when it rains they will come back again, as long as in the meantime you can give them a little water.

Mulch if you can as this will help to keep any moisture in the ground.

We have had water problems here too, and on days when the farm pump shed has not been working, I am reminded that the garden is not the top priority, so I have resorted to using the bath water to water the courtyard plants. We have identified certain shrubberies in the shade which will cope with less water, and some lawns in the outer areas have to cope with less water too.

Avoid using any machinery which is not absolutely neces-sary, to ensure no grass fire starts up.

I have been enjoying and admiring the achievements ac-complished in a new garden being developed in Patearoa. What a season to have been planting new trees, shrubs and smaller plants. However by first of all selecting plants which will grow in the Maniototo, being vigilant with regu-lar watering by hand, and heavily mulching, and staking to prevent wind damage great results are being made.

A recent visit with a friend to Janet Blair’s garden near Ar-rowtown, reminded me that in the heat of summer, flower borders of white and blue with grey leaves surrounded by green shrubs and hopefully lawn, works particularly well and has a cooling effect. In some areas a few, not many, old fashioned dark pink/red roses were included which just lifted it all beautifully.

Every day it does not rain is one day closer until it does – hang in there!

Hopefully by the time you read this we have all had a good rain.

Good luck. Jane

MANIOTOTO MUSEUM TREASURES Hazel Harrison On display in the museum is a black brooch with silver inlay which belonged to Mrs Margaret Armstrong, wife of head shepherd John, 1859 – ’73, to Captain Hamilton, Waipiata.

Mrs Armstrong was born Margaret McLauchlin, 1816, in Scotland. She immigrated to New Zealand with her husband and eleven children [two others remaining in Scotland] arriv-ing at Lyttelton 12th April 1859. They walked over the Bridle Track to Christchurch where Mr Armstrong met Captain Hamilton who was signing up staff for his Run. Once sheep were purchased the group headed south by bullock wagon, driving the stock at the same time, until they reached the Waipiata district in the middle of June 1860. It was bitterly cold with snow lying and no dwellings as yet constructed, not a welcoming place for a family.

Mrs Armstrong was undaunted and not only did she care for her own family but was ‘mother’ to all other staff, winning their respect very quickly. Captain Hamilton had every confi-dence in her for successfully nursing sick men, without the benefit of a doctor or present day medications. Mid-1863 a shepherd, Kenneth Mackay, fell ill with a fever and despite all Mrs Armstrong’s best efforts died. He was quickly buried on the Run as they feared he may have had the plague. Un-fortunately Mrs Armstrong also contacted the condition and died 12th October 1863. She was buried beside Kenneth Mackay. The fourth daughter, Margaret, aged fourteen years, took over the care of the family and Mr Armstrong remained working for Captain Hamilton until circa 1873 when he moved to Timaru to be with Margaret who was now married to Robert Kennedy.

Mrs Margaret Armstrong was a true Maniototo pioneer whom we can be very proud of.
