Real Estate Brokers of Missouri. 660-827-0900 Did You Know? Some people keep hedgehogs as pets to get rid of insects and other house pests. Larry King's SABER sharpens more than just job skills for low-income residents Larry King believes in a hand up, not a handout. The Sedalia resident is help- ing local low-income residents acquire knowledge and skills that will help them become self-suffi- cient and good providers for their families through a program he has created, launched and teaches at the Salvation Army. SABER — Salvation Army Battling Economic Recession — is a free vocational training pro- gram that has already seen suc- cess. Six people participating in the pipe fitting/ plumbing pro- gram have been placed in jobs, even though they haven’t com- pleted the 12-week course. “The way I developed the program, I want to do six weeks of in-class training and six weeks of in-shop, hands-on training,” King said. He created the course based on his professional experience working in the field, “and by buying books and educating my- self.” When King launched the in- augural program a few weeks ago, 22 people signed up. He now has 10 left. “I don’t pull any punches, I don’t lie to them and tell them it’s easy work because it’s not,” he said. “It’s hard work, it’s dan- gerous work, but it pays ex- tremely well.” But King teaches his students more than pipe fitting and weld- ing. He also educates them on job skills such as interviewing and appearance, “things that give them a little better chance of get- ting hired,” he said. Salvation Army Major Mark Haslett had wanted to launch a vocational training program but never could find anyone who would volunteer their time to do it. King rang bells for the Salva- tion Army at Christmas and got to know Major Sue Haslett, who told King he needed to talk with her husband about his idea. “Without Salvation Army, it just wouldn’t have happened,” King said. “Salvation Army is the best program I have worked with because they care about people and try to help as many people as they can.” For every hour of classroom instruction he provides, King re- quires his students to do an hour of community service. It’s part of his “give back” mindset. He also teaches them to be financially re- sponsible, “because a lot of con- struction workers live paycheck to paycheck. In construction, often it is either feast or famine. I am teaching them that when they are making good money, they need to set some back.” King said he grew up quite poor, but was able to graduate from Moberly Area Community College with an associate of arts degree. He took economics and accounting classes. “I already knew construction, so I wanted to learn the business end of it,” he said. Upon graduation, he earned a scholarship that would have paid for his next year of college, “but I ran out of money, so I had to ei- ther go back to work or let the family starve,” he said. So he moved to Texas, where it took him three weeks to get a job, then five weeks to get the first paycheck. He said he lost 40 pounds in the process, “but I sur- vived and it made me stronger.” King’s curriculum has a strong safety focus because of a workplace injury that requires him to use a cane to this day. “You have to be (safe), be- cause it only takes a moment of carelessness to cause a lifetime of grief,” he said. “The majority of people who get hurt on the job, they don’t hurt themselves, somebody else ends up hurting them.” Which is what happened to him. King had flagged off an area to keep anybody from walk- ing through the zone where scaf- fold boards were to be lowered. “Instead of lowering it into the flagged-off area, (a worker) lowered it directly over me,” King said. The worker hadn’t tied the boards down, and one slid off and hit King, who suf- fered compression fractures, rup- tured discs and bulging discs, as well as permanent nerve damage in his left leg. While the SABER course’s classroom work can be done at the Salvation Army facility at 1200 E. Broadway Blvd., shop space and equipment are needed for the balance of the program. Students are using King’s per- sonal tools, so everyone must take turns, which slows down the learning. Mark Haslett believes there is a job market for plumbers, elec- tricians, woodworkers and car- penters. “I believe in America. A lot of the things that skilled tradesmen do has been shipped to other countries. I believe charity be- gins at home,” he said. “Every- body is crying about the high unemployment rate, but look at how many jobs have gone over- seas because somebody wants to maximize their profits at some- body else’s expense.” King, who said pipe fitting is simple “once you get the basics down,” hopes to train 150 to 200 people each year, including those who have been incarcer- ated. “People who have been re- leased from institutions already have two strikes against them,” he said. “A lot of companies won’t hire them. In construction, they don’t care, as long as they can do the work. All a lot of them need is a little education and an opportunity.” Haslett said his goal is for the SABER program to provide the best possible outcome. “Somebody can come here as a client needing assistance, they go through a training program, they get a job, and they go from client to self-sufficiency to donor,” he said. “This is brand new, and for some people it might seem like a foreign experience, but it is going to get results,” Haslett said. “It is already getting re- sults.” By Bob Satnan Bob Satnan/Democrat Larry King has translated his professional experience and knowlege into a free vocational training program for low-income residents available through the Salvation Army.

Poison-Related FatalitiesOn The Rise

(NAPS)—Poisoning is now the leading cause of injury death, surpassingeven motor vehicle accident fatalities, according to the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention. This increase is due mostly to a surge in drug-relat-ed poisonings, with drugs causing nine out of 10 poisonings.

Unintentional Poisonings Can Happen to AnyonePoisonings can happen to anyone, from children to seniors and everyone

in between. Many people think that the Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222,which connects callers to their local poison center, is only for emergenciesinvolving kids, but that isn’t true. Poison centers not only provide treatmentadvice, they also answer ques-tions about plants, mushrooms, bites and stings from insects, spi-ders, reptiles and marine life, herbal and dietary supplements, food poisoning and substances ofabuse.

Dangers at HomeTake a look around your

home. You may be surprised tolearn that the leading substancesinvolved in poisonings reportedto poison centers are right in frontof you. Potential poisons includeover-the-counter medicines, cosmetics, household cleaning products andprescription medications. But don’t worry, there are simple ways to betterpoisonproof your home.

Simple Steps to Prevent TragedyThere are steps you can take to protect you and your family:•Follow child-resistant packaging instructions and lock medicines up,

away and out of sight.•Read medicine labels and follow their instructions.•Talk to your doctor and pharmacist if you have any questions about

safe medicine dosage and usage.•Do not share prescriptions.•Never mix household or chemical products together.•When in doubt, call the Poison Help line, 1-800-222-1222, which con-

nects you to your local poison center. You do not have to have an emergencyto call. Post the number by your home phone and program it into your cellphone for easy access.

A Valuable ResourceWhen you call the Poison Help line, about 70 percent of poisonings can

be taken care of over the phone, saving unnecessary trips to the hospital ordoctor’s office. Poison centers are staffed by nurses, pharmacists, doctorsand other specially trained poison experts, 24 hours a day, seven days aweek, 365 days a year. Calls are free and confidential. Help is available inover 160 languages. Services are also available for the hearing impaired. Tolearn more, visit www.PoisonHelp.hrsa.gov, which is available in Englishand Spanish.
